Welcome to the Fitfreedom Menopause podcast hosted by Menopause exercise coach, Livia Francis.
Each month I invite a discussion on a chosen topic within menopause. Nickie Aiken and I cover the highs, the lows of the experiences of mid-life women in our modern-day society.
With 12 million women currently in their menopause in the UK, isn’t it about time that it is highlighted more at work and understood more within our population?
Today I have the pleasure of introducing Nickie Atkin, Conservative MP for London & Westminster, who is making waves by highlighting the importance of acknowledging menopause within our population, and our workforce. Nickie is extremely proactive in making her own lifestyle adjustments to cope with the symptoms.
I have been coaching Nickie in exercise and nutrition over the last few months with some very positive outcomes, which Nickie will tell you about today.

Today I have the pleasure of talking with Dr Olivia Hum, a specialist in menopause.
Dr Olivia Hum is a GP based in Sussex, who also runs a private clinic at the Nuffield Hospital in Haywards Heath. Olivia talks enthusiastically about how doctors in the UK are becoming more aware as to the needs of patients experiencing menopause. Olivia is currently educating other GPs as to the options open to women both in the NHS and privately. The medical world is changing and menopause is more openly discussed.
One of the most difficult subjects for a menopausal woman to talk about is sex. As our estrogen drops we can experience pain, lack of libido, and sensations of bladder infections after sex.
I experienced the burning sensation a few times after sex. Thinking it was bladder infection I took prescribed antibiotics.. But the diagnosis could have been different if I had spoken to a doctor who was aware of this symptom in relation to menopause. Namingly, the lack of estrogen is causing the pain the treatment would have been very different.
Olivia shares her top tips on how to 'cope' with the menopause. Interestingly, the most prominent was to reduce stress! Secondary to exercise and of course, eat well!
Thanks for listening and I hope that Olivia's advice helps you to think creatively about managing your menopause.

Menopause Lifestyle Solution interviews Dr Wendy Denning, who has been named 3 years in a row, in Tatler's top 150 private doctors and who co-presented the very successful TV series - 'The Diet Doctors, Inside and Out '- is a GP with over 25 years experience. She is passionate about and a strong advocate for the Integration of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, serving for 2 years on the GP Steering Group for the Prince of Wales Foundation for Integrated Health and currently serving on the Committee for an Integrated approach to Obstetrics and Gynaecology in this country.
Dr Denning's Philosophy She believes that good diagnosis is the cornerstone to good medicine and that this is best acheived by listening to the patient, helping them to interprete the body's signs and signals and to understand how the body functions as a whole. By changing just one thing one can often have a profound impact on many aspects of the body functioning.
Her strong foundation in traditional medicine and her extensive training in complementary medicine means that she brings many different strengths to the consultation process.

I had a health crash and my digestion crashed on me. It was then that I discovered what could help me to heal, when my doctor could not help me. I took matters into my own hands and started on my healing journey. I was prepared to do whatever it took to heal myself because it was that bad. I suddenly began to realise just how powerful food and herbs were to heal the body.
I saw my passion for health and nutrition and wanted to create my own business so I could get my message out to help others. I saw how your life changes when you are over the age of 40 and what specific diet, lifestyle, mindset and exercise changes need to be made for good health as you age.
I also identified what else can be going on in your body, even though you are eating healthily and doing all the right things, but you are still getting sicker.
There could be gut infections, heavy metals, overgrowth of candida, viruses or mineral imbalances that are stopping you from getting well.
How to decide to make the difference to your world as we launch into the latter half of our wonderful lives !!

Sally helps women going through peri menopause dissolve their childhood conditioning through a powerful method called RTT which is done under hypnosis. This means that they get to clear the mindset blocks that might be holding them back from health, vibrancy and abundance. Sally didn’t realise she was experiencing peri menopausal symptoms at age 37! Her stress levels were elevated , she couldn’t sleep, she gained weight, her periods were painful and she fluctuated between anxiety and depression. Realising the link, was a game changer. She is hugely passionate about innovative approaches to health and wellbeing which are rooted in neuro science and her first love is psychology. She spoke alongside world renowned nutritionist Marylin Glenville about how to change your weight by changing your thinking. She has also been featured in The Talented Ladies Club and Coach Magazine.

A podcast collaboration with myself and Sam Palmer ( who I met on instagram) who is the creator and founder of Midlife Makeover. Check out this fabulous vlog, insta TV and instagram on the handles below for more helpful tips and information on the menopause.
We are both from an exercise back ground and passionate about our message of how to 'MOVE THROUGH THE MENOPAUSE" What works in your 20s and 30s won't have the same results in your later years - our bodies react differently to exercise as our hormones become unsettled. BUT as Sam says we still need to MOVE!! :) It's also a lifestyle choice as your belly ' develops its own postcode' you can implement small changes to stop the weight gain. Most importantly you must enjoy the exercise that you undertake WITH support form a community of women all on similar paths.
Here's a little back ground from Sam: Sam’s career started in the NHS where she qualified as a nurse eventually working as a Sister in NeoNatal Intensive Care. Becoming a mother led her to look for work that didn’t involve night duty but did include her love of teaching so having qualified as a teacher Sam left the NHS to work in Further Education. A desire to do things ‘her way’ inspired Sam and a colleague to become their own boss and set up their own business where for 18 years they taught First Aid, both in the workplace and to private individuals.
Not content with one business, Sam turned her passion for running into something that would, unbeknown to her, go on to touch the lives of many thousands of women. She trained as a running coach and set up a fitness club, Sevenoaks Ladies Joggers, exclusively for women in Sevenoaks, Kent. In 2014 Sam was voted Coach of the year by UK Athletics for both the South East and the UK and has won many other local awards for her tireless work helping women.
Using her years of experience and medical background Sam has turned her attention to the issues that women over 40 struggle with during the perimenopause and menopause. Her newest ( and final she says!) business Midlife Makeover supports women to make simple proven lifestyle changes via an online platform and face to face support.
Sam is in the menopause, still running and often found out walking with her dog or cooking up a health brownie with chickpeas or beans - probably to go with her favourite drink of Champagne!
