As it turns out, Patricia Highsmith was another one of those common birds, a midcentury writer of the antisemite variety, whose advanced-level bigotries really don’t come come up in the same breath as the praises heaped upon her, and they should. She was shitty. But THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY is a fantastic novel, colored by Highsmith's own hatreds, and her ultimate goals.

SUMMARY
Amanda is a struggling single mother to two children in their 20s– Tom, who works at a shoe factory, and Laura, who is self conscious about a slight physical deformity. Amanda pressures Tom to bring a "gentleman caller" around for Laura, to get her daughter married, but Jim is a disappointment to the whole family.

As it turns out, Patricia Highsmith was another one of those common birds, a midcentury writer of the antisemite variety, whose advanced-level bigotries really don’t come come up in the same breath as the praises heaped upon her, and they should. TED HUGHES was an English poet, translator, playwright, and children's author, best known, possibly, as being the husband of Sylvia Plath at the time of her death. Often writing with deep natural symbolism, Hughes's life was inextricably linked with Plath's legacy for the 30+ years he lived on after her. His career was managed by his sister, Olwyn Hughes, and he maintained primary control over Plath's estate, publishing rights, and legacy. Hughes was named Poet Laureate of Britain in 1984 and held the office until his death in 1998.

Mostly that’s so the onus of reading or rereading fresh for the recording session is on me; people normally choose books they love or have recently finished in order to not have to read 400 pages of Victorian Sadness again and again. Jack Worthing, under the assumed name of Ernest, is in town to propose to Gwendolen Fairfax, the cousin of his friend Algernon Moncrieff. Gwendolen accepts but her mother, Lady Bracknell, refuses to let her marry as Jack/Ernest doesn't have the correct lineage. Algernon learns that his friend Ernest is actually named Jack, and Jack's country life secrets away a hot, young, female ward, whom Algernon decides to seduce on one of his "Bunbury" weekends– "Bunbury" being the name he gives a fictional friend whom he must visit whenever he needs to get out of town. Algernon takes on the guise of Ernest, who in the country is Jack's fictional brother that lives in town, to visit the family home. Jack's ward, Cecily, immediately decides she must marry him, this fictional Ernest whom she has heard so much about. Both men, taking on the name and disguise of Ernest, must convince their chosen spouses to marry them despite the fact that they are not the man they say they are.

Jake and Brett are seemingly in love, but cannot consummate their feelings for Jake was left with a war injury that renders him unable to have sex. Mike seems not to care that Brett is having an emotional affair with Jake and a physical affair with both Cohn and a young bullfighter. Everyone is drunk all the time, and despicable. Based on Ernest Hemingway's real vacation.

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is known more now as the source material for Andrew Lloyd Webber's coke-fueled nightmare of a stage show CATS and its subsequent and somehow scarier film released to cinemas in late 2019 starring an awful lot of people who should've known better. Its author, T.S. Eliot, was one of the most famous poets to emerge from the era of modernism, and carries with him many of the hallmarks of the literary movement, including but not limited to: virulent antisemitism, a fascist leaning, and really effed up relationships to women.

SUMMARY
In ancient Athens, two men and two women are in a battle of love. Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father, Egeus, wants her to marry Demetrius. Demetrius was partnered with Hermia's best friend, Helena, until Egeus offered him a different deal. Local leader Theseus, on the eve of his own wedding to the Amazon warrior Hippolyta, declares Hermia to do as her father wishes, so Hermia and Lysander escape to the woods, to travel to his grandmother's house to get married. Meanwhile, faerie king Oberon wants to play a trick on his wife, Titania, so he orders his minion Puck to drug her to make her fall in love with the first thing she sees– hopefully the monstrous Bottom, a weaver who has been turned into a donkey. In addition to drugging Titania, Puck messes up and drugs Lysander and Demetrius in succession, making them both fall in love with Helena, leaving Hermia alone and confused. The play resolves in typical Shakespearean comedy fashion– with weddings. But who will be wedded to whom?

After the tournament, Rowena, a comatose Ivanhoe, Isaac, and Rebecca are kidnapped by a pack of Templars– Bois-Guilbert and deBracy, who hope to make the women their wives or concubines. King Richard, Ivanhoe, and Robin Hood (!!!) band together to save the hostages and, eventually, Rebecca from being burned at the stake for being a witch. It's chaos.

Ross Poldark, son of the second son of a noble family, returns home from fighting for the British in the American Revolutionary War, to find his father deceased and his childhood love, Elizabeth, engaged to marry his good-for-nothing cousin, Francis Poldark. Ross, left with little money and a dilapidated farm and dried-up copper mine, is left to make his fortune with his own know-how. While taking out loans to furnish and fit his farm for productivity, he runs across an abused urchin girl named Demelza, whom he rescues to become his kitchen maid. Ross quickly becomes the talk of the town for his unusual habits, and his friendliness with his tenants. As the book spans several years, Demelza ages and dynamics of the Poldark family change, as Francis's land-owning father dies, Elizabeth bears the Poldark family a son, and Francis uses his family money to gamble and live a life of luxury he can't seem to afford, tempted by the wealthy, "new money" scion, George Warleggen. Demelza, upon turning 17, covinces Ross to marry her. The book ends with Demelza announcing her first pregnancy.

He proves himself worthy to the men, and they take him on as a fourth confidant, in their schemes to protect the King and Queen against the conniving Cardinal Richelieu. Sam Spade and his partner, Miles Archer, are approached by a beautiful woman named Miss Wonderley, who claims her sister has been taken by a no-goodnik gangster named Floyd Thursby. Archer takes the first night of surveillance, and is mysteriously shot-- as is the prime suspect of Thursby. Thrown onto the case, Spade quickly uncovers many secrets-- that Miss Wonderley is actually a treasure-hunter named Brigid O'Shaughnessy, and that she's in bed with another court of criminals to abscond with a bird figurine made on the island of Malta by the Knights Templar that is worth millions of dollars. Spade, who was sleeping with Archer's wife and begins hooking up with O'Shaugnessy almost immediately, is being followed by the police as the lead suspect in both murders. Two other men after the falcon-- Joel Cairo and Caspar Gutman-- continually make attempts on Spade's life, as Spade tracks down the falcon and uncovers the figurine's secret, and the identity of his partner's murderer.

If you've been feeling the stress of being cooped up and also the suffocating pressure of America's systemic racism, Gilman's high-school-reading-list classic is the choice for you.
Summary of THE YELLOW WALLPAPER (from wikipedia)
The story describes a young woman and her husband, who imposes as a rest cure on her when she suffers "temporary nervous depression" after the birth of their baby. They spend the summer at a colonial mansion, where the narrator is largely confined to an upstairs nursery. The story makes striking use of an unreliable narrator in order to gradually reveal the degree to which her husband has imprisoned her: she describes torn wallpaper, barred windows, metal rings in the walls, a floor "scratched and gouged and splintered," a bed bolted to the floor, and a gate at the top of the stairs, but blames all these on children who must have resided there.
The narrator devotes many journal entries to describing the wallpaper in the room – its "sickly" color, its "yellow" smell, its bizarre and disturbing pattern like "an interminable string of toadstools, budding and sprouting in endless convolutions," its missing patches, and the way it leaves yellow smears on the skin and clothing of anyone who touches it. She describes how the longer one stays in the bedroom, the more the wallpaper appears to mutate, especially in the moonlight. With no stimulus other than the wallpaper, the pattern and designs become increasingly intriguing to the narrator. She soon begins to see a figure in the design and eventually comes to believe that a woman is creeping on all fours behind the pattern. Believing she must free the woman in the wallpaper, the woman begins to strip the remaining paper off the wall.
When her husband arrives home, the narrator refuses to unlock her door. When he returns with the key, he finds her creeping around the room, rubbing against the wallpaper, and exclaiming "I've got out at last... in spite of you." He faints, but she continues to circle the room, creeping over his inert body each time she passes it, believing herself to have become the woman trapped behind the yellow wallpaper.

Summary of CAT'S CRADLE
John, the narrator, is looking to write a book about the history of the Atomic bomb and becomes obsessed with the children of a (fictional) scientist named Felix Hoenekker, who was instrumental in the breakthrough of nuclear weapons. John follows the children– Frank, the eldest son; Nate, the youngest son who is also a little person; and daughter Angela– to the poverty-stricken island nation of San Lorenzo, where John discovers that the most beautiful woman in the world, Mona, is engaged to Frank despite that John has decided he must have her. On San Lorenzo, John is also introduced to the fake religion Bokononism, which has been worshipped and vilified by the government, in order to control the populace. While on San Lorenzo, John discovers that the mythical ice-nine, a chemical that can turn all of the water it touches into solid ice, was indeed invented by Felix Hoenekker, and that each of his children have a grain. Thanks to the nation of San Lorenzo's careless war-games, the grains of ice-nine hit the ocean and cause an cataclysmic event. John and Mona survive, and emerge to the earth's surface to find most of humanity dead.

Playwright and author Claire Willett (@ClaireWillett) joins host Emily Edwards (@MsEmilyEdwards) to discuss one of the English language's most popular books– Daphne du Maurier's REBECCA. Since its first publication in 1938, REBECCA has never gone out of print, proving Maxim de Winter, the Second Mrs. de Winter, Mrs. Danvers, and almost every other character in the entire novel to be some of literature's most enduring fuckbois. We take on the text as the emblematic novel of the push-pull of heteronormative patriarchy, discuss the essential factors or race and class, and also ruminate on REBECCA as a queer text, thanks to some new details neither reader knew before recording! This is Fuckbois of Literature.
Summary of REBECCA
A nameless lady's maid meets the debonaire Maxim de Winter while working in Monaco. The recently widowed Maxim, who is many years her senior, is taken with her innocence and marries her, and brings her back to his manor home, Manderley, where he immediately expects her to become lady of the house. The Second Mrs. de Winter is overshadowed constantly by the community's memory for Maxim's first wife, Rebecca, and is ostracized by Manderley's lead housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. As the Second Mrs. de Winter becomes more unhinged, she discovers Maxim murdered Rebecca for having an affair and falling pregnant, and Mrs. Danvers is undone by Maxim avoiding murder charges, so she burns down Manderley.

Catherine Morland is an upper-middle-class single woman from the sticks. Without anyone to properly introduce her into monied society, Catherine attends the summer at Bath with her weird older neighbors. While there, she is befriended by the two young Thorpe siblings– fancy and false Isabella, and gruff and stupid John. Catherine is sidelined by the Thorpes, but catches the eye of the desireable Henry Tilney, and befriends his younger sister, Eleanor. Isabella visits the Tilney family home, Northanger Abbey, and is quickly convinced that Henry's father, the General, murdered his first wife; she is caught snooping through the house while John Thorpe is also sabotaging her prospects with Henry by lying to the General about Catherine's wealth. The General kicks Catherine to the curb, but Henry determines the truth and proposes.

She tells her siblings about it, and they do not believe her; but one day Edmund– the bitterest, shittiest sibling– finds the doorway and enters Narnia himself, pre-emptively befriending the evil White Witch who is trying to take over the entire country. Peter, Susan, and Lucy all enter Narnia in an attempt to save Edmund, with the help of Jesus, I mean, Aslan. After they win and Edmund apologizes, the four siblings become the royalty of Narnia, and grow to adulthood before exiting the wardrobe, only to find themselves children again in England.

Elio immediately falls in love with Oliver, despite their age difference and Oliver's seeming ambivalence to Elio's crush. Eventually, they consummate their relationship before Oliver disappears from Elio's life in Italy.

Summary of HIS DARK MATERIALS
Lyra Belacqua is a child without parents in a parallel version of Oxford, England. In this parallel universe, a human's soul takes animal form outside of their body; and Lyra's is Pantalaimon. As Lyra has not hit puberty yet, Pan has not taken a constant form. Her uncle, Lord Asriel, is a scientist at Oxford who is secretly researching a phenomenon called "Dust," much to the anger of the Roman Catholic Church. Lyra learns of dust at the same time she is given a mysterious Golden Compass that she can read like tarot cards when she asks it a question. She is then kidnapped by an evil woman of the church named Mrs. Coulter, who brings her to the North Pole to separate Lyra's soul from her. Using her Golden Compass and friends she made along the way, Lyra escapes, but not before she finds her uncle (who is actually her parent, along with Mrs. Coulter) performing an experiment with the Northern Lights, during which he sacrifices Lyra and opens a rift to a parallel universe (ours), through which Lyra escapes. In subsequent books, Lyra meets a boy from our universe named Will, and together they become the new Adam and Eve and kill God. It's complicated.

Summary of JANE EYRE
After a protracted childhood of darkness and horror, abused and neglected orphan, Jane, finds work as a governess to the adopted daughter of a mysterious and dickish, new money, country squire named Edward Rochester. She quickly falls in love with him despite his coldness and abuse, and he offers her marriage. Before their wedding, she learns he is already married, to a woman he keeps in his attic. His first wife burns down the estate, and Jane flees, and eventually finds a preacher named St. John Rivers, and his two sisters. St. John offers Jane the opportunity to be his wife and travel to India to proselytize, but Jane declines. Without tether, Jane soon learns that she has inherited a mysterious uncle's fortune upon his passing, and that the Rivers family is also her cousins. Jane gives her fortune to St. John for his church, and then returns to Rochester's destroyed home, where he is living in a small cottage, blind and maimed. They marry, and have a child.
