We are often very good at encouraging others and noticing things to admire in the artwork of those around us, but it can be more challenging to offer those same gentle words to ourselves. This week, we will practice finding things to love about our own creations and speaking to ourselves with kindness and generosity.
I noticed this when I was sketching with my son. It was easy to find things to love about the work of the other person, but difficult to say these things about our own work. Do you have the same feeling? I would love to know how you respond to this and how you offer gentle encouragement to yourself.

This month I am going to be using a prompt list to encourage myself to keep a regular garden journal again. This has been inspired by Inktober which is an art challenge where participants sketch something in ink, every day for the month of October. There is an official list, but I have created my own. I am calling this challenge Inktober in the Garden. Each prompt is just one word related to gardens and gardening and is aimed to get us thinking in different ways about the beauty of our cultivated space.
Here is the list:
If you would like to join me, you can use each prompt or just dip into the ones that inspire you the most. I would love to see your pages! If you are on social media you can use the hashtag #inktoberinthegarden or you can email me your pages at bethan@journalingwithnature.com.
If you don’t have a garden, you can use the prompts to get inspired by your local park or green space.
I have created a blog post with this information. You can find it here: Inktober in the Garden.
I am also excited to share the news that I have opened my online store! You can find it over on the Journaling With Nature website.

Through this process you will be able to watch your own progress as you develop your skills of drawing birds. You can control the variables by using the same time limit for your sketch, as well as using the same reference photo, materials and paper size. Give it a go if it sounds like a fun challenge to you!

Today we are exploring the corners of our environment, the neglected places that we do not normally visit. There are nature stories here too. Take some time to nature journal the things that you notice in a place that might have been overlooked for a while.
While I was playing with my son in the garden, I came across a corner that we never usually visit. It made me think that there are neglected parts of our environment that also have stories to tell. This week I will be nature journaling in a corner of my space, and I invite you to do the same. If you do not have a garden, seek out a corner of your local park, or even a corner of your home. What do you find there? What nature stories are playing out in these neglected spaces?
I would love to see what you find in your local environment. Leave a comment below this post on the Journaling With Nature website.

Hello and welcome!
I am so happy to be back after taking February off the podcast. While I took a break from releasing episodes, I didn't stop recording them. So, I have many wonderful new interviews to share with you in the coming weeks.
This episode is in response to a question from a podcast listener called Dan. Dan asked me if I had any tips to avoid overwhelm when starting out with nature journaling. There are so many resources, blog posts, videos and workshops on nature journaling these days and it is hard to know where to start. I have felt this same overwhelm myself! In answer to Dan's question, I have created a list of '10 Things to Help Avoid Nature Journal Overwhelm'.
Here are some resources that I mention during the podcast:

Hello!
Today I don’t have an episode for you but this is just a quick check-in to let you know that I’m taking February off the podcast.
I’ve had a lot of complications and turmoil here lately and finding the time to invest in researching, interviewing, editing and publishing an episode every week has been a real challenge.
I want to take this month to re-centre and find way that I can make this project sustainable in the long term. I absolutely LOVE creating this podcast. It has brought me deep joy and connection with guests and listeners from all over the world and I am not going anywhere! I just need to take a short pause to recalibrate and to figure out ways to make this sustainable in terms of the time investment required to create an episode each week and also financial investment, because there are quite a lot of costs involved too.
So I will be taking February off, but I am honestly missing the process already and February has only just started! So that’s a good sign, it means that I love what we are creating together here and I am determined to find ways to make it sustainable.
I have a lot of exciting things coming up in March. New guests, new formats…I am bursting to tell you all about it but I am going to keep it all as a surprise for march!
So, Monday March 1st I’ll be back here and ready to go and I hope you’ll be there too…there is so much coming up I really can’t wait!
Thanks so much for your support.
See you on March 1st!

Patricia Larenas is an artist and gardener with a passion for nature, and especially for trees. Her tree portraits capture the iconic trees around her in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also investigates alternative art materials through creating her own natural inks and hand-made journals.
When choosing art materials, Patricia’s concern for nature is always in her mind. She prefers to use recycled paper wherever she can, uses high quality 100% cotton paper for finished pieces, and explores alternatives like xuan paper (rice paper) and bamboo.
Patricia loves gardening, seed saving and how seeds can be the ‘carriers of culture’, connecting people to their cultural roots and to each other.
