In today’s episode, I am interviewing two great businesswomen Ashley and Brittany Silfies, the co-owners and creators of Pink Picasso and Modern Monet. Both companies are owned and run by a woman-owned team with a goal of providing a beautiful, quality product. Ashley and Brittany started the company in the middle of a personal crisis, and so many things were crumbling around them. However, neither allowed the chaos to take over what they knew their purpose was. At the time, Brittany worked hard to provide for their new family. On the other hand, Ashley was very aware she would not cut it. She was taking care of their youngest daughter and two other little children. Ashley would sit in that apartment looking at a white wall, and it was in looking at that white wall that she got the inspiration for her business.

If you are looking forward to starting a business, or you are in a business that you are already questioning why you started it since it is not yet paying off, it is a beautiful reminder that things that are most rewarding are also the most challenging. As a business owner for 13 years, Ashley and Brittany resonate with me so deeply at that level. Not even considering the personal aspects the two of them were trying to overcome this time. Listen up as they share some advice to a business owner, someone starting a business, or even a life change.

With a bunch of shared stories and experiences, we can connect with one another and move forward with life. What things can you avoid and learn quickly that I didn’t?

I first looked for ADHD after a recommendation from my cardiologist, who referred me to a psychiatrist. I actually went to talk about the need for better focus. I was struggling with the ability to stay focused and stay present. Since our first baby was born, I was always diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I struggled with both until a few months ago when I visited a psychiatrist to discuss the focus issue. In doing so, I only imagined a new antidepressant or probably a different dosage. I didn’t have high hopes for anything major changing.

Truthfully, being a mom of three and running a business, I am always trying to find ways to be efficient. The focus issues that I experienced and had always experienced were tied to being an overachiever, someone who had a million things going on and had a hard time saying no. It turns out that the inability to plan and understand time well, the anxiety, depression, and so many things were connected to ADHD diagnosis.

So in this episode, I get to talk about very specific time management tips; if you have ADHD or suspect you have it, that will be beneficial. Over the years, I have sought out so many professionals for help to manage my time better effectively and be the best I could be. Tune in and learn how you can get better at it!

Timestamps:

[07:20] Why do we lack the ability to plan?

[10:15] Planning backward

[13:36] Scheduling tasks

[15:14] Putting everything on a timer

[17:04] Creating rewards for finishing tasks

[20:25] Running project narratives

[23:40] External versus Internal ability

[26:10] Change your self-talk and keep a time management win list.

[30:19] Doubling or tripling the amount of time you think a task can take

[32:31] Having a planner or planning app.

On today’s episode I’m focusing on being hyper focused. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and I’ve had a real learning journey since the diagnosis to try to manage my condition and to understand how my brain works. I want to encourage you to get to know yourself too, so that you can function better in your relationships and in your business and find out how to work from your magic. Once you get rid of limiting beliefs about yourself and your abilities, you can start to achieve the things you want from life.

Did you know that up until 2002, women weren’t included in generalized studies of ADHD? Presentations of ADHD in women are quite different, and it can often go undiagnosed because little girls don’t tend to cause problems in the classroom, so they rarely get specialist referrals. They can often ‘pass’ as neurotypical, and it’s not until later in life when their ADHD really starts to cause a problem, when they’re juggling work, family, relationships, and other responsibilities. This was exactly my story, as I thought that my ADHD was anxiety, and that my anxiety was preventing me from focusing on my children and relaxing with my family. Since my diagnosis, I’ve turned my ADHD around and used my hyperfocus to succeed in my business, and to learn more about my condition.

In this episode, I walk you through my mental process since the diagnosis. I also share three behavioral tendencies that are part of an ADHD diagnosis. I want you to think about whether any of these tendencies are present in your life, as if so, they could be worth talking to a medical professional about, so that you can start to get the help you may need.

Shaun Austin Gordon is the founder of Kiss Books, a photography album business for photographers based in the Midwest. He started out as a photographer himself and at one stage he was photographing more than 60 weddings a year, all while raising a family. He has had to work a lot on himself to get to where he is now, including attending counseling with his wife of 20 years, and is happy to share his advice and perspective with others. When he’s not working, he loves to play tennis and travel.

On today’s show, I was so happy to spend some time with Shaun Gordon, the CEO of Kiss Books. Shaun has been on a journey of self-discovery, and he walked me through some of the milestones he met along the road. This journey began with a text from his wife, who said that she wanted to divorce him because she couldn’t cope with continuing in the marriage as it was. They went to marriage counselling and Shaun was able to open up to his wife about his history of sexual abuse. He’d never been able to talk about this dark and difficult experience, and in his teens he turned to hard drugs as a way to cope and subsequently became an addict. This revelation at marriage counseling not only reshaped his relationship with his wife, but also with his parents, which Shaun and I explored in detail in the episode. I’ve had my own experiences of difficult relationships with my parents, and Shaun and I talked through the pain of acknowledging that our parents did the best they could with what they had. Although it can be hard to cope with the feeling that our parents let us down, we can still try to salvage the good parts of those relationships, and we can use our stories as a stepping stone to try to make things better for ourselves and for our own children. We’re not perfect people, but we can try to move forward and make each generation a little more healed from trauma.

Shaun and I also discussed how we can start to move forward from these difficult traumas, such as including a ‘To Be’ list next to your ‘To Do’ list. Shaun gives this advice to everyone, especially entrepreneurs, as it helps us to move towards the person we want to become. Listen in to find out how to write out your ‘To Be’ list, how to include gratitude in your life, and how this will fill you with a new sense of achievement and purpose.

Today’s episode is the second part of my interview with Sarah Selecky of the Sarah Selecky Writing School. Sarah and I dive in by discussing the process of giving feedback in the writing school, which places a heavy emphasis on primarily giving positive feedback. All students highlight what’s really working in each other’s stories, to hone their minds on what they do well so that they can continue to develop their skills. Any criticisms of someone else’s work are delivered only with the writer’s permission and are couched in terms of constructive criticism.

At the end of the episode, Sarah drops an exciting hint regarding a TV show project that she’s working on, so stay tuned for forthcoming news on that front!

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Davis, an Author, Writing Teacher, and Workshop Leader. She is also the founder of The Writer's Journey. She has written 7 books and has sold 2 million copies and has had them translated into 11 different languages.

To say I was thrilled when one of my favorite authors agreed to allow me to interview her is an understatement. Her most recent book, The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story, is a memoir that touched my heart and has helped me view my story for what it can do to help not only me but those that have lived through the same experiences.

This interview really dives deep into Laura’s writing process and the story behind the memoir. We will also talk about surviving sexual abuse, raising children, and inspiring others to heal from childhood traumas . It was a beautiful interview and I know you are going to enjoy it, just as much as I did.

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Dennis Gillan. Dennis is the Executive Director at Half A Sorrow Foundation, as well as an advocate for mental health and a speaker. We will be discussing a very tough subject today, suicide. But this topic needs to be addressed so that we can reach more people and help stop the cycle of pain that leads to suicide, and show people how important it is to take care of your mental health.

Dennis is not only an advocate, but he has also lived through the pain of losing family to suicide. By hearing his story and how determined he is to help those around him work through their issues and learn to handle life’s hard times without resorting to suicide, further justified to me how important mental health really is. It was a very eye-opening conversation, and all I can say is that we are blessed to have someone like Dennis to help guide all of us on how to support our mental health, as well as the people around us.

Main topics we discuss:

Risk factors

Warning signs

Positive Coping Skills

Mental Health Awareness

Today, I had the pleasure of interviewing Marlayna Glynn, a Memoirist and Publisher. She is an award-winning storyteller on page, film, and photography and she is the creator of Birthright Books, LLC, a writing and publishing house dedicated to the art of creating memoirs.

Marlayna was so interesting to talk to, not only do I admire her work, but I admire the way she approaches her writing. Her love and determination to put her stories and the stories of her clients out into the world was fascinating. It was very interesting to me how she can interconnect memories into stories, to reflect the true authentic life story of the people that she writes for as a ghostwriter.

Additional topics we will discuss in this episode:

  • The process to getting your ideas in a format that is best for a book.

Today I am sharing part 2 of my interview with Morgan Johnston. Morgan is a local artist in the Birmingham, Alabama area and she is also the co-owner of Club Duquette. Club Duquette is an experiential retail brand where they design and manufacture in house, as well as feature other interesting companies with unique items. Morgan is an amazing artist, and her artwork is currently being featured and sold on Serena and Lily.

During this second half of our interview, we really dive deep into our past, childhood trauma, and how we are still working to maintain our healthy mental state through therapy. Talking to Morgan made me again realize that I am not the only person that has had trauma during childhood, and I love to hear what other people are doing to find healing and peace within themselves.

It was a beautiful and eye opening second half of the interview. Mental health is something that is not seen by the human eye but felt within us. We must continue to let others know that it is okay to go to therapy to find the inner peace and healing that you have been looking for.

There are so many national celebration days, from National Hugging Day to National Coffee Day. But today we are going to talk about The Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves day. The day was created by Dr. Martha J. Ross-Rodgers, a motivational speaker and author. This particular celebration really got me thinking about how many times we think of things that we could have had, or we think we should have had.

Does this type of thinking really help move us forward in our life and business? I have worked very hard to overcome many of the things that happen to me in childhood, and I am a recovering people pleaser, so this national day really touched me.

If there have been days, months, or even years where you have said to yourself “I could have” done something or “I should have” done something differently, this is the episode for you.

It’s time that we begin to appreciate all of our struggles and not regret the things that we haven’t or should have done, but to rejoice in our paths and see ourselves for who we have become, because of the choices that we made or that were made for us.

Quotes, People, and links mentioned in this episode:

Welcome back to part 2 of my interview with Tom Gentry. We are going to be diving a little deeper today into the expectations of young men. We will talk about how young men are expected to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives at the early age of 18. We will discuss that the focus needs to be on who they want to become not on what they want to become. Why its important to make sure that they are following their own dreams and not their parents, in order to live fulfilled and happy lives. But we will also talk about how we can guide, not pressure, our children to find their own paths.

This was such a hard subject to cover, because there is not a cookie cutter formula to raising children. Each child is different, and they all have their own dreams and paths. It was a pleasure to get Tom’s amazing insight into what can cause addiction and how we can help our children, and the children around us to find their purpose and their personal love for life.

I would like to welcome back Tom Gentry, the host of The Path to Authenticity podcast, to the show. He is an amazing podcaster, mentor, and all around great person. He has used his experience with overcoming addiction to mentor young men on the path to their recoveries.

Today, we will talk about something a little different. We will be discussing “Modern Day Manhood.” What does modern day manhood really mean? Have men really changed over the years? Why it’s hard for men to show their feelings and why men tend to not have as many men friends to socialize with.

We will also discuss what toxic masculinity is and why it is unhealthy to not only the men, but to everyone around them.

I am completely thrilled to introduce to you Beth Kephart today. She is an amazing writer and an award-winning author of more than 30 books. She is also a creative writing teacher at the University of Pennsylvania and a co-founder of Juncture Writing Workshops.

Two years ago, she and her husband decided that in order to continue to make their lives meaningful for themselves and for the people around them, they would begin to teach a community of writers and show them the techniques on how to write their own memoirs and essays. They began by having live in person workshops, but when COVID hit, they had to change directions and they started doing online workshops to support their group. They designed 11 workshops that would teach different aspects of the writing process.

It was such a pleasure to be able to interview Beth. I have personally taken one of her workshops and I will be using the techniques that I have learned to help me write my book.

I know trauma is never easy to talk about, but I also know how important it is to talk about trauma or get help to healing from the things of our past and childhood. In this episode, I get as real and as vulnerable as I can get sharing some of my experiences from my childhood and how those things affected me, even today. But I am happy to share that I have worked a lot on healing and giving myself grace, as well as grace to those in my past. Of course there are moments where some of those memories or emotions are triggered, but overall, I am very blessed to be where I am and have the family that I have today. I hope through sharing my experiences that it gives you hope in healing and also to help you take those steps necessary to work through those hard things in your life. Let’s go into 2021 with a new perspective and a willingness to look into ourselves and to heal.

Are you wanting to start a business and a family and can’t figure out the right time? Or are you a business owner and struggle with the work and family balance? Oh my goodness, I understand you! This episode is especially for you.

In this episode, I wanted to give you some tips about starting and growing businesses while trying to start and grow a family. I give you all the fun details of how I have gone through different seasons of my motherhood in business in the last 11 years. I’ve had to shift and try new things, but I have learned many things and one of those is that it’s not a moment that defines our character, but a combination of a pattern of little things we do over and over. Be kind to yourself because running a business and having kids is not easy! You will need just as much love for yourself as you do your kiddos during the process. It’s not going to be easy or perfect, but I promise you it will be worth it!

Define your version of success! Do what works best for you and your family. Take a listen to hear some ways to balance it all and how I’ve managed over the years.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Did you know …..

“Studies currently estimate female job loss rates due to COVID-19 are about 1.8 times higher than male job loss rates globally? Working mothers have always worked a “double shift”—a full day of work, followed by hours spent caring for children and doing household labor. Now the supports that made this possible—including school and childcare—have been upended. “

In this episode of Imperfectly Polished, Elizabeth Davis of Elizabeth Austin Photography joins me in an open, raw discussion about these struggles. Have you ever overheard a man being asked when he was going to stop working to raise his children? No. I highly doubt it. These aren’t just social constructs or imagined pressures either. And In this current season, female entrepreneurs (especially women of color) are at increased risk of losing this already delicate balancing act.
