This is where I invite my friends to talk about my favorite books. I realized that I enjoyed talking about books that I love with my friends whenever I get the chance . When I had these conversations I gleaned so much wisdom and laughter through it. So it gave me the idea to share some of those conversations with my very own blog readers. So join me as I interview some of my friends as we talk about some of my favorite books and how it has changed the way that I view the world. I hope you learn, are challenged, can relate, and see Christ in a deeper way to these interviews. đ
Had to sit on the topic of speaking up for yourself after this podcast. My guest Alberto joins me as he speaks about his experience on the topic and how he speaks to his kids about it as well.
Alberto was born in the USA to immigrant parents (Brazil and Egypt) and began to travel as young as 6 months old. His dad was a corporate nomad, so every 2 years, they'd pack up their home and move to a different country. He is a dad of two sons and moved them to Mexico when they were in elementary school. That was a lot more difficult than he thought it was since he thought all kids are "resilient." Alberto a teacher and work at a private international school.-------------------------------

To be seen and heard is a struggle most TCKs go through thinking their existence can be overshadowed by what their parents do. In this conversation we talk about what it means to feel heard and how our experiences molded us to be who we are today.
Michael is an American by passport. He grew up as an MK from Chiang Mai, Thailand and served the US Navy for 12 years. He have a wonderful wife and 4 kids and they are home based in Cebu, Philippines. He is currently an aspiring author and TCK podcaster working as a goodwill ambassador for the US Department of State in Isparta, Turkiye at SĂŒleyman Demirel University as an English instructor.

Ever wanted to travel with your pets, but didn't know where to begin? In today's episode our guest Emily Wilson will be joining us as she talks about how she hops around the globe with her furry friends.
Emily is a TCK who went back and forth between California and South Africa, she and her family treated our jack russell like family. He came with them on their travels. So, when she got my first dog as an adult , it made complete sense to bring her from Kenya back to California and a few years later she went with them to Ecuador before returning to California. "We love traveling and we love our dogs. Itâs not always easy to combine the two especially when that means getting on flights or crossing borders. Anna, a fellow TCK, now mom of TCKs shares her personal experience of what it's like to raise a family overseas and what she discovered working with families who are on similar journeys.
Anna Danforth grew up in Cameroon as a third culture kid where she developed a passion to help global families thrive overseas. She married her high school sweetheart from DR Congo and they raised their two kids in Lesotho and on a farm in South Africa. Anna drew on her experiences as a third culture kid, missionary, and teacher at the Africa Orientation Course to write Raising a Family Overseas. She also provides training on Ethical Image Sharing as a Global Citizen. Tanya Crossman is the Director of Research and International Education at TCK Training, a leading provider of preventive care for TCKs worldwide. Tanya has over 18 years' experience in the field of cross-cultural family care (largely in China and Cambodia), including 10 years' research experience. The term "Third Culture Kids" used to be focused on a certain group of kids with backgrounds like diplomacy, missionary, and military, but over the years as mobility has become more accessible the term TCK change over time. The whole month of July is Relationship Month, where weâll cover topics surrounding different kinds of relationships through the eyes of TCK friends. This week weâre joined by a very special friend, a listener of Talks with a Third Culture Kid Friend, Carmel Valencia Indrawan. Carmel has lived in 5 different cities throughout her life; she moved to Singapore with her family when she was younger and lived there for six years. She then moved back to Manila to finish high school and college, and her first few years as a young professional. Then she spent some time in Shanghai and Paris for work. After getting married in the Philippines, she moved to Jakarta with her husband where she resides now.
Sheâs joined the podcast today to talk about her experiences as a TCK and her married life, like how she got together with her husband and some of the things they have in common like cultural curiosity and understanding. She shares some advice about her relationship and how she took her time growing as an individual before her marriage.
We take some time to discuss some common questions about marriage life, like âhow did you know when you were readyâ or âhow to handle long distance relationships.â We talk about Carmelâs individual pursuits and passions and her thoughts on her marriage and how her relationship has grown over the years. We also discuss the importance of communication and how it plays a huge role in being able to identify your wants and needs as someone in a relationship or seeking one.
Itâs important to know yourself and that might mean taking time to learn about yourself as an individual, to know your attachment styles and tendencies so that you can work on them and grow to become more whole before you commit yourself to another person. Balancing your independent spirit and intentionally making time and space for growth is part of your journey too.
Join us as we talk about relationships, being an individual and being together in a partnership and some tips and tricks for TCKs who might be looking for partners in the future.

The whole month of July is Relationship Month, where weâll cover topics surrounding different kinds of relationships through the eyes of TCK friends. This episode, we are joined by an old friend of mine (who i've never met in person!), Falyn Matsudaira. She was born in the US and moved to Russia due to her parentâs job as missionaries.
After some time, her family moved to Poland during her middle school and high school years, then she moved back to the US to attend college and where still lives now. We take some time to catch up and talk about her perspective on relationships, as a person who married another TCK.
Falyn shares some of her thoughts about being married to a fellow TCK and while they share some similarities in their journeys, their experiences are ultimately completely different and she talks about how these comparisons have added layers to their relationships as they grew closer in their partnership.
As we discuss, we talk about how some TCKs may not want to have a partner who is also a TCK because we understand the complex emotions that come with moving around so frequently. However, Falyn talks about how these similarities have contributed to their initial connection as they began to date. She also touches on some of the different personality traits she and her husband have and how these things complement their relationship.
Itâs impossible to predict the what kind of people we will meet around the world and who we will connect with, but itâs important to learn about yourself and the way that you communicate with other people to establish those strong bonds. Donât forget to work on yourself and give yourself some grace and kindness as you grow in your individual journey.
Tune into this episode where we talk about marriage relationships, and reconnect and reflect on topics from our teenage years, with the perspectives shaped by our experiences as adults.

This episode kicks off the whole month of July, which will cover topics around all kinds of relationships. Joining us today is Chris Constantino, a fellow TCK and staff member of the company (check out his previous episode here!) Heâs returned to the podcast to talk about relationships and we take a deep dive into our experiences with friendships as TCK.
As both children of foreign service families, we are familiar with saying goodbye to the friends that we made as we grew up, moving from country to country and having these passing relationships has affected how we view relationships even as adults now. Through this episode we talk about how friendships are tested through time, distance, and how friendships can survive those periods of strain or difficulty. We share our experiences with different kinds of friends and our thoughts on how communication may differ from person to person. We also share how we handle our own friendships and our perspective on friendship dynamics.
As TCKs, we meet so many people but at the same time, we often have to leave those great people and the grief that follows is never easy, but this has helped us learn to appreciate our friendships even more.
At the end of the day, people take care of their relationships in many different ways, some people may talk every day, while others share their heart when you meet up in person, and still, others show how they care through their actions. Relationships are built on the choices you make to nurture them and having confidence in the friendships that you make will help them grow even stronger.
Even the best of friends will go through periods where life gets busy, and communication may not look the same as it used to, but maybe all they need is a message (or meme) from a friend to cheer them up.

Todayâs episode features fellow podcaster Calvin Karuniawan Widjaja, the host of Global CKtizens.
Calvin is a cross-cultural kid from birth as he is from an Indonesian Chinese family, with a truly mixed bag of cultures spread across his family. He shares his TCK story, about how he grew up in Indonesia and moved to Singapore to further his education and has lived there for more than twenty years.
Calvin joins the podcast to talk about cultural identity and the roles that TCKs can adapt into the globalized world. As an advocate for intercultural and multicultural identity, Calvin offers insight about how TCKs are catalysts that can lead to a more unified world. Calvin also shares the meaning behind the name â@globalcktizensâ and how he decided to pursue the idea of creating platform for the next generation to become pseudo TCKs through exposure in media content about cultures outside of their own.
In this sincere discussion we touch different topics, we take the time to share some of the grief that weâve experienced in our personal lives as well and how these life events have impacted our emotional health in our TCK journey as well. We hope that this podcast sheds some light on how we navigated these periods in our lives and that no matter what youâre going through, you arenât alone in your struggles.

This week weâre joined by Julie, a friend of mine from my college days. Her TCK journey began when she moved to Indonesia with her family for business and then went back to her home country, Korea where she stayed for ten years; she currently lives in California. We discuss our understanding and experiences with reverse culture shock ( when a person living abroad returns to their home country: it feels unfamiliar, aka can be shocking), where you experience your âhomeâ culture from an outside perspective. Julie shares some of her experiences as a TCK who returned to her home country without fully speaking the language, and the expectations and reactions from the people around her. This added a layer of difficulty to that transition, as there are many cultural and social cues associated with the understanding of a language. A TCKâs journey is always a little different but the emotions we experience and the desires we have, to build a community and create bonds with others is something that brings us closer together.

Inga Aksamit is an an award winning author, a world traveler and a seasoned TCK. She was born in California and has lived in places such as Lahore, Pakistan, Peru, Bangladesh and Indonesia with brief stints in the USA as well. She wears her TCK badge of honor with pride and shares her travel experiences along with stunning pictures of her adventures on her blog. Ingaâs TCK journey began when her father's job as an irrigation engineer took them around the world. Join us as we have an insightful conversation about being a cultural chameleon and share personal stories about cultural differences and how we understand them. We also talk about how the ability to adapt can be a double edged sword, and how itâs important to define your own values system as someone who is constantly exposed to new perspectives and experiences. We also talk about how to balance different aspects of being a TCK and how to cultivate deeper friendships.
Being able to adjust to a new space or situation requires some degree of understanding of your personal values and moral stances, as you meet new people and find your place in the world. It might not be easy to make sense of everything but being a good listener and asking questions can allow others to meet you where you are.

Culminating the staff month series, we have a special episode that was recorded a few months ago, back when the company first began to lay its foundation.
In this special episode, we have the Staff of Talks with a TCK Friend in one room and we talk about what it was like meeting each other for the first time and how we could be our authentic selves without fear of being misunderstood and celebrating who we are together and as individuals. Through this talk, we all express that we have this sense of longing for a place where we belong, uninhibited by our insecurities, our differences, and our hurts. We managed to come together as a community of people with shared experiences and who want to support and be part of each otherâs lives.
We talk about the TCK scene in the Philippines and how it feels necessary to have a safe space like this for true friendships, growth, and healing. We also talk about a privilege that we have as TCKs is that by experiencing different cultures, weâve become more adaptable, empathetic, and understanding as we grew older. We hope that you enjoy this open and honest episode where we share our hopes and joys about having a community thatâs filled with love, support, and understanding. If we were able to find a community like this, yours is out there too. Donât give up hope in finding your people; if you feel safe, thatâs when you know youâve made it to the right place.

The whole month of May is dedicated to my company staff/fellow TCKs! Every week in the month of May you will get to know my staff a little bit as they share topics close to their heart./ This week, we are joined by Belle, the marketing and social media mastermind of the company. Belle is from a Filipino-Chinese family, born and raised in Metro Manila; eventually, she moved to an underdeveloped island which is now a destination tourist spot in The Philippines./ Our main topic in this episode is grief. We take some time to be vulnerable with one another and share some of the grief that weâve experienced in our lives. Losing a loved one comes with many emotions that surge like waves and can be difficult to navigate. We also share some of the ways that we have been able to process our emotions and the importance of being able to release those feelings. Grief is a universal experience and is not a sign of weakness. God allows us to come as we are with these heavy feelings and helps us make sense of what we donât understand. The month of May is dedicated to my fellow TCK friends/ Staff! Today we are joined by Gene who's band helped shape the music scene in the Philippines in the early 2010s to encourage more openness for different bands to put out their work. We chat about what it's like being a TCK what he went through as he immersed himself in the local scene connecting with other locals (in this case fellow Filipinos) after moving around so often.
Gene is a researcher by day and a musician by night. At hiscurrent job, his research is focused on climate change, cultural diplomacy, andSoutheast Asia. As a son of a Filipino Diplomat, he lived in 7 differentcountries growing up, amassing a multitude of experiences and cultivating anappreciation from the complexities of human beings. He is also a musician andhas been active in the Manila underground scene since 2015. He obtained hisHumanities degree from the University of Asia & the Pacific in 2017 and isconstantly looking for ways to help out his local community.

Today we are joined by Chris, my business manager, who's different experiences from America, Europe, and the Philippines gave him a unique perspective of understanding different cultures in the workplace. We also chat about how we are able see different perspectives in the workplace and what we bring to the table just as we are. We even give a glimpse of our company culture and what a company that is run by TCKs look like. Hope you can relate to some of the topics we talk about and know your value as TCK in the workplace. Christopher Constantino, born to a foreign service family and has been bouncing around 10 times spanning 6 countries and 3 continents bringing with him a variety of cultures. While his journey as a TCK hasn't always been smooth sailing, he has learned to enjoy the journey. Along with the ride came many stories and experiences - from a freelance event photographer, to an office assistant, a tutor, and exhibit greeter. Having studied and having worked globally, he has learned to adjust to the different work ethics and practices of different cultures. TCKs have special qualities that make them an asset in the workforce, something I personally didn't even notice since this is what I considered "normal" my whole life. Our special guest Karin has been in the workforce for over 20 years and in her years of experience has come up with a list of skills TCKs naturally posses because of our up bringing. Join us as we discuss some of the unique characteristics of TCKs and how just being us can impact the workforce. Karin Avila is a Third Culture Kid (TCK) originally from California in the UnitedStates. She moved to Saudi Arabia with her parents when she was 14, and sheattended boarding school in Austria until she was 18. She spent time studyingat a university in Heidelberg, Germany, and she eventually obtained herbachelor's degree in International Relations at San Francisco State University.She received her masterâs degree in Environmental Management at the Universityof San Francisco where she completed an internship and studied near Budapest,Hungary. Karin built her career in clinical research and has held multipleadministrative leadership roles in the healthcare field. She is currentlyresiding in Spain and pursuing various personal projects related to travel andlife as an adult TCK.

This week we will be tackling what it's like growing as a part immigrant part TCK with my friend Josh Lee. Bringing up new concepts (for me at least) of being more Korean or more America as someone who grew up later in his life in America. Mikayla Stover is a mom of three children who recently moved from the USA to Costa Rica making their children third culture kids. Mikayla spent a year in Brazil at the age of 18 but has otherwise lived in the US until now! Currently Mikayla supports her entrepreneur spouse and their children in this transition navigating new relationships, culture, language, school, and everything in between.

After a career of more than 20 years in the communications and marketing industry at the intersection of branding and digital, Rachelle Houde Simard is a social strategist specialized in community building. She works with brands and organizations seeking to build better relationships with their communities whether they be composed of their clients, users, employees, audiences, donors or even neighbours, both online and in person. In 2018, Rachelle founded an online community for Québec-based digital communications professionals which today hosts more than 12,000 members. As well as being a speaker and a consultant, she is currently writing Sociable, a French-language business book about community management as a strategic advantage in a hybrid world, slated for release in Fall 2023.
