From “being in domestic violence” to a well-noted scholar in healthy relationships, ACC ICF coach, licensed therapist, and TBRI trauma-informed practitioner; laser-focused on building a world-wide Crisis to Courage trauma men’s movement starting with combat vets, who have pre-military trauma for an in-person group/online program; being a torch to millions of hurting fellas.(Karen designed a revolutionary wildly successful program called Crisis to Courage Counseling/Coaching TBRI Trauma-Informed Program for Men, tailored specifically for them, with guy-friendly language/instruction, and interactive/fun exercises, they fully enjoyed, respected, and could easily relate to with practical application in their lives).

Karen Bontrager boldly shared her own crisis to courage story regarding the negative trends involved in this anti-male society, which is heading towards an all-out genocide of men. She discussed the importance of guys being strong, instead of cowering, or turning to anger, isolation, and any number of numbing solutions, in an unlikely encounter with two amazing young guys, who needed to hear a different narrative. Additionally, it was communicated that many ‘so-called’ men leaders are traumatized themselves with being effective at helping themselves, much less others. She encouraged any man listening to demonstrate courage by resisting passivity, staying accountable, doing the right thing despite anything to the contrary, and choosing to live expectantly.

From “being in domestic violence” to a well-noted scholar in healthy relationships, ACC ICF coach, licensed therapist, and TBRI trauma-informed practitioner; laser-focused on building a world-wide Crisis to Courage trauma men’s movement starting with combat vets, who have pre-military trauma for an in-person group/online program; being a torch to millions of hurting fellas.

Karen Bontrager boldly shared her own crisis to courage story regarding the plight of men, which began as a researcher/undergraduate at George Mason University in a quest to understand healthy relationships. She, as a relationship coach, experienced a significant imbalance between platforms for male/female expression. It was discussed having a revelation regarding men implementing this incredible guy-honoring movement and society’s increasingly anti-masculine trajectory. This led to a licensure in therapy, becoming a trauma-informed, TBRI, Trust-Based Relationship Intervention Practitioner with a spiritual focus, which worked powerfully during a heated/serious situation.

She stressed a genocide of men coming, which has culminated over much time. Therefore, it is essential for good ones to rise up because hating fellas world-wide is the standard. It was suggested this inevitable evil can only be countered by courageous fellas, who have repented, surrendered to God, and will/do tell their stories.

(Karen designed a revolutionary wildly successful program called Crisis to Courage Counseling/Coaching TBRI Trauma-Informed Program for Men, tailored specifically for them, with guy-friendly language/instruction, and interactive/fun exercises, they fully enjoyed, respected, and could easily relate to with practical application in their lives).

From being raised in a “heavy-handed home” with a strict religious upbringing to becoming a God-loving Husband/Father, Retired Police Officer, Director of Operations at Chase the Vase, Keynote Speaker, Creator of the Fight Like David Challenge, Drug and Alcohol Recovery Expert/Coach, and Host of the Chase the Vase Podcast, whose aim collectively is to heal traumatized men/women from a life of pornography, substance abuse, and PTSD by understanding their identity in Christ

Brock Bevell boldly shared his own crisis to courage story regarding the lack of male involvement in recovery. He said guys often communicate superficially, which prevents them from truly healing. (This forward moving story telling has become a significant aspect of his coaching work). After getting run over by a car, it led to a medical layoff, too much free time, and a destructive opiate addiction.

Brock indicated a man’s ego prevents him from hearing the voice of God, even though He is continually speaking. Despite his own obedience at times, he did hear Father clearly during a lengthy police chase with a dangerous intoxicated assailant, who was putting a whole community in harm’s way. This now, even wiser man said masculine men need to be more vulnerable, which requires them having a strong relationship with Christ. He suggested a daily schedule with positive activities helped him/clients resist pornography and other addictive behaviors. All of this, led to becoming a fierce advocate/addiction coach encouraging folks to pursue a similar higher calling; bringing great deliverance to their lives.

Brock Bevell boldly shared his own crisis to courage story regarding being in “active addiction/active recovery,” which began when introduced to the world of pornography at 8; continuing into a full-blown addiction until age 42. He shared his father was very physically abusive to the older siblings, but he/his brother received less severe “spankings.”

This now, pornography expert indicated how that addiction rewired his brain and others; preventing intimacy in adulthood. Brock concluded the negative past finally resulted in a surrendering to God. Having strengthened faith brought about a new self-awareness leading to exponential growth as an entrepreneur/fellow brother empathetic to others who have also been broken. He asserted telling one’s story with a forward view grounded in a strong faith gives men incredible hope for having a new life.

From being raised in a neglected home to becoming a God-honoring mother of an amazing 14-year-old gentleman, much-respected sister/ “auntie”/confidant in her Arkansas community, 4-year Army combat veteran serving in Iraq, culinary-trained home chef, who serves with love, talented artist, soon-to-be devoted wife, writer, and blossoming men’s advocate/leader/speaker/coach on Clubhouse/LI, whose aim is to heal traumatized men with a mother’s touch

In Part I, Sharhonda boldly shared her own crisis to courage story regarding being a single mom, who experienced losing her mother at an early age; leaving the kids with a “rolling stone,” often absentee father. His absence brought sexual abuse into her life at age 8 from a close relative and led to similar traumas. Therefore, she stressed the importance of men being protectors and strong male role models to teach the next generation, like her son/others. This brave woman discussed not learning how to express emotion due to feeling unwanted, which caused Sharhonda to become promiscuous in wanting to have a baby, who would unconditionally love her.

Throughout an incredible faith journey, she has learned to fully rely on God which has helped immensely in raising her son, which has included inviting good men, like a younger brother to help mentor Zechariah. She expressed having him in their lives has provided great relief because of no longer playing the role of both mom and father. It was communicated having these great examples of masculinity are needed to help him and other young men manage their emotions, even if dad is not in the picture. Sharhonda encouraged single mothers to have hope, despite negative beginnings by remaining faithful, understanding their true identity in Christ, being honest with the children, and encouraging them to make better decisions.

She explained that even with great trauma: losing a mother at five, having a promiscuous father, and seeing the loneliness by granddad’s absence, she still recognized the importance of family; with father supporting his household and mother modeling love.

Sharhonda discussed having a standard despite the way she was raised, which caused her to be emotionally bankrupt from ever expressing love, or so she thought when raising Zechariah. (The real shift occurred when wisdom kicked in). This now, wise woman realized he needed to understand about adequately processing his emotions to one day lead his own home, instead of being angry or absent. Having this keen awareness began when she discovered her own worth as a single mother. She said great emphasis was put on preparing him to be a responsible young man through love and discipline. Throughout this growing and everchanging faith journey, Sharhonda has encouraged her beloved son to make better choices by focusing on his relationship with God, catering to a woman’s unique emotional needs by practicing with “mom,” enjoying life, and spending quality time with loved ones.

From being raised in a long line of combat veterans to serving 4 tours of duty in the United States Air Force from 1983-2005 as the “Senior NCO Doc” to becoming a loving Husband/Father, World-Renowned Speaker/Thought Leader/Suicide Advocate for Military Personnel, an Agricultural Farmer, who stressed the importance of transitioning veterans reaching out for supportScott Shore boldly shared his own crisis to courage story regarding the value of children understanding their fathers’ life experiences, even though there was/is natural resistance in all young men. He explained the important role of fatherhood in providing children with good skills to navigate life successfully. This gentleman learned good modeling from watching his parents/close relatives interact, who knew what was important: “God and family.”

The 4-time combat veteran and senior NCO officer expressed his confusion about other fella comrades under his command not having the same unstoppable resolve, which has contributed to suicide/unresolvable questions. Scott discussed the generational military code of silence regarding active duty, that may not be beneficial long term; especially for those with a history of complex trauma; completely relevant to his own military career/retirement.

Scott Shore boldly shared his own crisis to courage story regarding the importance of men taking more responsibility and making better life choices, which he saw decline while serving as a top leader in the military. He observed his young recruits had come from fatherless homes, so they gravitated to him for guidance never received in childhood. Scott recounted that one of his closest mentees died via suicide; traumatizing him. He admitted to being perplexed, along with the VA mental health system because other veterans from previous generations were much more resilient, and encouraged those suicidal to seek help, despite their egos.

From being raised in a tough part of “LA” to becoming a loving Husband/Father, Navy Veteran, World-renowned Speaker/Thought Leader, American Author, Ordained Minister, Youth/Men’s Advocate, Leadership Strategist, Management Tactician, and Fitness Expert, who stresses the importance of good parenting as a cure for societal ills
In Part II, Coach Brooks encouraged godly men “to share the love” by mentoring young guys in their sphere of influence. However, he stressed “men mentorship” is even lacking in religious leaders, like pastors and male group facilitators, who are too traumatized to help themselves, much less anyone else because of unresolved shame. It was suggested raw unfiltered stories are the vehicles to really heal hurting guys, like he and others.

William learned these painful, but important lessons while being imprisoned wrongly for ‘supposedly’ kidnapping his son, whom he had not seen in 3.5 years, but whose case was later dismissed after 6 months. (Note: this man paid all child support, without ever seeing him, and never had any mark on his spotless record prior to the event, as an honorable ROTC member and upstanding veteran of the Navy). He said forgiveness was pivotal in healing from that injustice, which prevented him from fathering his one son. Therefore, he encouraged dads listening to be present in their child’s life at whatever capacity available.

Later, the discussion turned to discussing a degradation of masculinity wrecking our military’s mission of defending American citizens. It was suggested this anti-masculine society has reached into all spheres, but returning to “one nation under God” is the only solution to restoring truth, and being a good male role model with younger guys, who are greatly confused about their identity.

From being raised in a tough part of “LA” to becoming a faith-inspired Man, Husband/Father, Navy Veteran, World-renowned Speaker/Thought Leader, American Author, Ordained Minister, Youth/Men’s Advocate, Leadership Strategist, Management Tactician, and Fitness Expert, who stresses the importance of good parenting as a cure for societal ills

Coach William Brooks boldly shares his own crisis to courage story as he speaks openly about ways men have “been feminized.” The mixed messages young guys receive without any positive male role models, are sending them into mass chaos. He discussed how these fatherless hurting males, whom he encountered in the military/prison, cannot balance their masculinity: provide/protect/emotionally competent side, along with its deleterious consequences.

He emphasized the importance of children seeing positive examples, which started in the Brooks family, and has continued in parenting with his lovely wife. It was stressed that absent or ill-informed fathers/mothers are not equipped to handle new/strange narratives, which are hurting children. Understanding this gap, he has focused great energy on developing successful youth mentoring programs. Coach William Brooks is now, working to give young men hope for a better future, despite their previous choices; even if it included criminal activity.

He stressed the need to face fears, instead of hiding from them, which comes through understanding your true value/worth. In Part II, he talked about the journey of telling his own faith story, which has been recounted in “The Miles and Markers.” Gene indicated if it was needed to protect the family, he could/would turn on that protector/strength mode of masculinity, which is appropriate under certain circumstances. Philosopher, Published Author of The Miles and the Markers, Director of Learning and Development at Traver Companies, Producer/Director Fixed Ops Roundtable Virtual Events, Podcast Host Extraordinaire: The Gene Pool, with a global platform

Gene Girdley boldly shared his own crisis to courage story as he speaks openly about the childhood traumas associated with caring for a verbally/physically abusive father, who would “lose control” during diabetic attacks, and providing for a stepfather with Lou Gehrig's disease, while his mother worked long hours as a traveling country singer. He was paralyzed emotionally by those experiences, which he covered up perfectionism with humor, until his identity completely transformed by coming to Christ.

Once greatly stifled in his creativity, but always a story teller at heart, he discussed the importance of learning from great mentors, which has led to countless achievements with the latest development in publishing a book. Gene expressed becoming more productive in his 60’s than ever before, and encouraged men to reflectively journal for self-awareness. He has now, taken these practical/spiritual insights from the road, and as a family man onto a world-wide social media stage, where he gets to tell his own story, while still giving to others.

He encouraged men to not suppress emotions, which eventually manifests itself negatively, but to get comfortable with crying, which is a significant aspect of a guy’s masculine “DNA.” (This is now, material for his dynamic public speaking presentations with audiences world-wide). Daniel admonished men to courageously walk in their gifting, instead of playing a losing comparison game, that involves celebrating even the smallest accomplishments via gratitude. In this same vein, he emphasized the seriousness of allowing his own son to do likewise, as opposed to forcing his will, which is especially important for all the other competitive dads listening. Daniel Gomez boldly shares his own crisis to courage story as he speaks openly about how his life was transformed when his beloved wife was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. He has a powerful message that “men matter,” when before he did not understand his own worth from childhood, which was generationally passed down from his dad, who suppressed emotions by covering up his pain of loss by drinking, multiple moves, and “machismo” violent anger.

After losing yet another girlfriend by admittedly his own similar choices, it led to a brutal suicidal attempt via shooting; leaving him with a visible scar, which at first, was a source of incredible shame, but became a place of loving grace. His powerful message of forgiveness towards self/others has transformed millions of lives world-wide. Through his divine calling, Daniel encourages believing men to continue now with the important awareness work even after being saved by sharing vulnerably and being spirit-led; using their masculinity God’s way.

Special Edition: Men under Fire Part II

From being raised in a “small town” to becoming a loving boyfriend, successful financial advisor, rising young trailblazer, and deeply aware thought leader online, who understands masculinity as being a balance of both toughness when warranted and compassion during other times, and who is not afraid to speak his mind

Michael A. Rivera boldly shares his own crisis to courage story as he speaks openly about how it is to be a man in this “cancel culture,” which is silencing men world-wide. He discusses pushing past this societal “narrative;” ever increasing in strength by using his own voice in conducting intelligent research, drawing conclusions about truth by ignoring the 24/7 rhetoric, and engaging in respectful disagreement. Here he encourages others to do likewise, despite any backlash to the contrary during a time where masculinity is under fire.

In Part II, Michael discussed how the “main stream narrative” is suppressing men’s voices to such a great extent they are fearful to even speak out anymore. He explained different scenarios in his own life regarding the socialist trends he sees which are disturbing to him in America. He invites guys to have “open conversations,” instead of “allowing fear to hold you back” in an effort to maintain freedom, so that his and other generations can continue to engage in honest dialog which although at times may conflict, it ultimately becomes a tremendous source of growth for all involved.

Reggie Waterman shares his own crisis to courage story, as he unexpectantly became a young father, who desperately wanted to “make the situation work” with an overly reliant and bitter girlfriend, that had a radically different upbringing, which has made co-parenting difficult to say the least.

He talked about needing to share his own story, and to avoid being a “statistic,” through awareness, but not “externally motivated” by all the chaos related to COVID, and the other pressing demands on guys. Additionally, Reggie admitted that parents in his generation haven’t prepared boys for life because they are over-sheltered, which involves the truth of displaying real masculinity.

This very successful fella discussed the pain associated with his two children not really knowing him as a man. In response, all his efforts in the virtual space have been on creating a “time capsule” of legacy for them to capture the Waterman name by impacting others through acts of service. He challenged the audience to think bigger, by impacting more than one, which is what he has done by putting his faith into action, which has and is opening entrepreneurial opportunities to carry his phenomenal “Discover Your Other Self” message globally to college-aged young people in Africa, and throughout the world.

From being raised in a “broken home” without a dad to becoming an influential man of faith, loving husband/father, United States Military Corps Veteran of 26 years, Department of the Navy federal employee, an organizational leadership coach/mentor/consultant, and LI video influencer/producer

Charles Wells shares his own crisis to courage story as he pushes past being a “selfish” new husband/father to a successful military leader guiding teams of 1000s of young marines to now, an emerging organizational speaker helping transitioning veterans succeed throughout the world

In this episode, he discusses the role shame plays when an individual regrets a decision, but should in no way be used towards innocent people, who were victimized. He encourages these fellas to understand if you were a victim, it “was not your fault,” and to share the trauma with someone, who is safe.

He also talked about how his dad leaving required a mental toughness on his mother’s part, which was passed down to him pragmatically. Charlie soon realized even at ten how “selfish” this was, but has used these negative experiences, along with a strong prayer life, to be the best family man, and encourages other men in similar situations to do likewise, even though his own relationship between father/son has been reconciled.

Charles Wellsshares his own crisis to courage story as he pushes past being a “selfish” new husband/father to a successful military leader guiding teams of 1000s of young marines to now, an emerging organizational speaker helping transitioning veterans succeed throughout the world

While serving in the infantry, he saw that young men “tamp” down their trauma, or cope with it via unhealthy behaviors as with drugs, alcohol, or sex. He explained they often are considered to not be emotionally intelligent, or appear seemingly “bullet proof,” which causes guys to suppress their true feelings further.

Charles talked about the earlier days of questioning his angst as a father, which may have been retriggered by traumas from his own dad leaving the family when he was ten. During this discussion, he explained how the loving relationships, with both his mother/wife: strong Christian women, taught him empathy, and encouraged him to express his emotions appropriately. He also explained that seeking out strong male mentors, reading great marriage and parental books, and prayer helped him navigate his masculinity during troubling times, when the world had different advice for men.

Charlie gave practical advice to help you guys open up and talk about past traumas, which he learned while serving as a squad leader in Afghanistan and Iraq: warzones, and as a dedicated family man. Finally, he concluded with the way society has shaped masculinity into this twisted concept; far from protecting and providing for those around you.

From being raised in a “small town” to becoming an influential young man of faith, leader, serial entrepreneur: successful podcast host, owner of a podcast agency/ACN, speaker, and freshman in college

Will Holdren shares his own crisis to courage story as he pushes past the societal “pressures” of attending college just because “to positively impact a billion people” to make a profound difference in the world

As a young entrepreneur, he discussed the importance of having purpose, which took tremendous courage despite any fear to the contrary. Will talked about going down “an untraditional path,” of leaving a legacy for future generations, even with those who judged negatively, by having discipline to “take daily action” because “his why was bigger than his fear.” This young man encouraged other men to write down gratitude affirmations, which involves taking a mental inventory of life in general, considering others less fortunate, and praying. He discussed his own surrender of faith, that ultimately gave him confidence to live a God-designed life, when other 16-24-year-old guys got derailed by numerous distractions, due to not valuing the gift of time.

Michael Maher shares his own crisis to courage story as a possibly 'mis-labeled' “rebellious” young man, attempts to find his voice among the “suffocating” controls of religion from parental guidance too strict in nature. This led to never feeling good enough, and later a car accident with debilitating chronic depression, which he later learned many of his family members suffer.

It was in these dark places he developed a growing relationship with God. The search for true healing took him on an exciting entrepreneurial self-discovery surrounded by a supportive “community,” that helped him make sense of life, along with his wonderful wife, who loved him unconditionally from Day 1. Now, he is on a path to be completely set free from a performance-based mindset, rooted firmly in religious addiction, a new term or idea, to live a life of unlimited possibilities.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode with Michael Maher, Part II in which he discusses more about his dynamic story, and how you too, can have the courage to do likewise. You will not want to miss it.
