Elevate Podcasting

Heidi Swapp, a wife, mom, entrepreneur and influencer of women, teams up with David Kozlowski, a licensed marriage and family therapist to create a podcast that brings light to tough topics related to personal and family relationships. This unlikely duo was brought together by the death of Heidi’s son Cory, who passed away from suicide in July of 2015. Heidi and David discuss information, tools and strategies that have helped her these past few years to learn, grow and understand the complexities of these relationships. Heidi is not a typical mom, and David is not a typical therapist. The unique combination of relatable info, sense of humor and honest expression through personal stories makes this show a ‘must listen’ for parents who are genuinely looking for help to connect with their kids, and improve the quality of their relationships.

In this episode, David and Heidi talk about the importance of understanding the difference between being emotionally dependent and emotionally independent.

Vote Light The Fight for the Family Is Awards online now at https://awards.family.is/family-is-awards-2020

Emotional Dependency (Subconscious)- When a person has excessive or extreme hope and desire to have things or people bring them emotional comfort and stability because they feel hopeless or unable to give themselves the type of comfort or stability wanted. Often the person believes or expects that other people or things have to act or behave in a manner that will reassure them that they are worth something because their true sense of SELF is not present or has not been trained to reassure themselves and recognize that they have significant self-worth.

Emotional Independence (Conscious)- When a person is free from feeling responsible to be the caretaker for other people's emotions and actions to maintain a relationship with others. Also, when a person is not relying upon others or things to rescue them from emotional distress to feel capable of handling difficult situations. Emotionally Independent people can allow others to explore and exercise their freedom without giving in to the excessive desire to rescue others from potentially harmful decisions or situations.

Welcome to the first episode of the “Light the Fight” podcast! In this first episode, David and Heidi introduce themselves and talk about how and why they met. Since that time, Heidi has been learning more about the mental and emotional challenges that we all face and how they influence our relationships. Heidi has experienced first hand, the worry and fear of having a teen struggling with these challenges, and not knowing how to help. The “Light the Fight” podcast will present topics that parents need to understand in order to “RESPOND” to their kids, instead of “REACT”, and then “INITIATE”. While most of these topics are basic to the understanding and improvement of relationships, we as parents are expected to know this stuff… but have never formally been taught!
We start here with an important TOOL for dealing with a child when something has gone wrong: “Be a first RESPONDER, not a first REACTOR”.
