Authenticity used to be my favorite word...
I used to absolutely LOVE the word "authentic". It meant something. Genuine and true blue.
I blame marketing but authenticity has lost a bit of its spark as it became a "strategy" and "tool" for business owners.
In this episode, my guest, Melissa Snow and I get into the word Authenticity and unpack what it really means. We also couple it with another scary one that goes hand-in-hand with being authentic, "networking". Don't let the internet buzz ruin these words for you!
In this episode:
Melissa helps make the intangible tangible as she offers practical action steps, and of course a little soul-searching to get you started!

Friendships can be challenging...
Regardless of who you are. No matter whether it's a friendship with a coworker, colleague, fellow business owner, or BFF from grade school. As my guest Danielle Bayard Jackson shares in this episode, female friendships are especially complex while being incredibly important!
Because I've had my fair share of complex and complicated female friendships throughout my life, I had many questions! I thought you might as well, so I decided to bring in an expert in the matter, Daniel Bayard Jackson, who believes that it's worth fighting for our friendships.
Danielle is a female friendship coach and educator who speaks about platonic women relationships and the science behind it. Her podcast, Friend Forward, is dedicated to teaching us how to create and maintain better female friendships.
We get into:
Danielle Bayard Jackson is a female friendship coach and educator who speaks nationally about the science of women’s platonic connections. Her coaching business, Friend Forward, is dedicated to teaching women how to create and maintain better female friendships.
Danielle’s expertise has been featured in The New York Times, NBC News, Psychology Today, Wall Street Journal, FORTUNE Magazine, and Oprah Magazine, various talk shows and a host of other media outlets.
A former high school teacher, Danielle now uses her teaching skills as an educator to coach women through common friendship conflicts. As a member of the American Sociological Association, she uses the latest research to create practical, tangible strategies to help women create more depth in their platonic relationships. Companies like TikTok, the NBA, NFL, and Etsy have all booked Danielle as a speaker to address the topic of connection psychology.
As the resident friendship expert for the global app Bumble For Friends, Danielle shares her insight weekly on The Friend Forward Podcast, has several viral videos on TikTok, and recently signed a book deal to bring her practical, research-based strategies to the masses in May 2024 (tentatively titled Fighting for our Friendships).

This past year, life's felt a little more cluttered and confusing to me than usual.
As I was starting to do some of my end-of-year reflections and planning forward, I asked myself some of my usual questions:
"What do I want in the coming year? What do I want to create? What do I want in my LIFE?"
And a lot of my answers weren't really satisfying or deeply fulfilling. They were based largely on what I wanted to do and accomplish, and didn't really get into who I wanted to be.
Looking for more depth and clarity in what was REALLY burning inside me to create, I discovered Bonnie Wan (today's guest), author of The Life Brief: A Playbook for No-Regrets Living.
Today's episode is my conversation with Bonnie as she shares her own story and gets into what a life brief is and what it can do in your life.
It's surprisingly simple and yet, lends itself to endless possibilities.
In our interview, Bonnie Wan shares:
Quote by Roger Housden (paraphrased) "Writing is like rearranging the furniture of your mind."

What would it look like to DO the damn thing you REALLY want to do in your life? Do you know where to start identifying what that thing is and how to make space for it?
To wrap up 2023, I wanted something new, fresh, and inspiring vs. just the normal old goal-setting and planning. I wanted to get super solid on WHAT I'm focusing on in the coming year and WHY. I want to go after my biggest dreams 150%!
In order to get clear on what that looked like, I needed to dump all the puzzle pieces of my life onto the table and see which ones fit and which ones didn't (some belonged to someone else's puzzle entirely, and I have no idea how they got in my bag!).
It was in Taking Inventory personally and professional and doing a little soul-searching that I met today's guest, Bevin Farrand, author of Your Damn Manifesto which is a guide to getting clear on your vision and putting it front and center at all times.
In this episode with Bevin:
About Bevin Farrand:
In 2019, after an unexpected loss just 5 days after she returned from a whirlwind trip to France with her husband, Bevin Farrand founded the Take the DAMN Chance movement and created the Do the DAMN Thing Method. Her DAMN framework has inspired thousands to connect with the people that they love, do the “crazy thing” that makes all the difference and, when given a choice, to take the damn chance. She is the author of Your DAMN Manifesto: Discover the Keys to Personal Transformation and Bringing Your Biggest Dreams to Life and a coach that supports women in achieving their goals, even after going through deeply challenging experiences.

The words we use shape our every day, our environment, the people around us, and our world.
Are we using words and phrases in a way that creates the world we want to live in? Are we using language in a way that allows us to intentionally connect, include, and bring people together?
In this episode, with special guest Emily Nichols, we look at the topic of the many things we say (and phrases we take for granted), and how they can actually work to alienate and separate, rather than unite and include.
In this episode:

Are you afraid of FEAR?
There's a lot of messaging out there about how we need to stare our fear in the face and crush it! "Do it scared"
Fear gets a bad rap! It's a "victim of some unfortunate PR". We’re told it’s a barrier to living our best life and if we give into our fears, we're most certainly doomed to crash and burn.
My guest today, Farnoosh Torabi, author, journalist, and host of the SO Money podcast has a different perspective of fear.
She believes that fear can be a teacher, an impetus, and a KEY to our success and happiness!
In this episode, we talk about the fears that hold us back, personally and professionally and how the wisdom they contain can lead us to live more meaningful lives.

I believe podcasts have the power to change lives.
Podcasts help people access information and education in an affordable (often free) way. They give voice to messages of hosts and guests who may not otherwise have a platform to share their impact. They can raise awareness around issues, people, concepts, and ideas. As a podcaster, you learn, grow, and evolve in the journey of podcasting. You never know who you will meet when you podcast. You can create powerful connections as a listener and a host, and a single episode can change a trajectory, perspective, or relationship.
The possibilities are endless.
In this week's episode, I sit down with Adam Adams, host of the Podcast on Podcasting and we get some of his unique perspectives on creating great content through the power of podcasting.
In this episode:
About Adam Adams:
Adam has a loyal following in the podcasting space. After selling his first podcast, he launched the Podcast on Podcasting which is ranked as a top show for podcasters. Adam is also the founder of GrowYourShow.com where they help you get your message out to the world. Grow Your Show is The Easy Button For Podcasters TM that want to have a top-rated show without all the hard work. Their clients are getting ranked in the top 1% on iTunes and other top charts which means they have more influence than the other 99%.

I recently announced the closing of the She Built This Facebook group which will be officially closing on August 11th, 2023.
After a little feeling of the ol' feelings... I wanted to share a little story about how much She Built This has meant to me and why I made the decision I did, and how we're evolving together.
I wasn't able to fully iterate a lot of feelings and emotions in my announcement video, and I created this mini-weekend episode as a little love note from my heart to yours.
With endless gratitude, thank you for being here and please keep spreading the sparks of community and making the impact that you're meant to make in this world as we move into this next season together.

Do you know your numbers enough to know how much money you need to pay yourself to keep the lights on and vehicles registered?
Do you know how much your business needs to cover its expenses?
Do you even know what your business expenses are?
We don’t always take time to pause and ask ourselves these questions or dive into the numbers enough to know what's really going on under the hood in our businesses.

BLOG: "What to Do When My Business is Slow"
Today’s podcast guest changed my life.
In addition to being my friend and changing my life that way, Alesia also changed it by showing me how to use metrics to inform strategy when it came to my podcast.
I hired Alesia Galati of Galati Media to do a podcast audit of the She Built This podcast back in early March 2023. We sat down and went through all the numbers, and Alesia dug in and asked me about my goals for the show.
It was in learning more about podcast performance metrics and having Alesia make sense of them for me that I was able to use the metrics to inform my strategy moving forward.
In this episode, Alesia and I get into the importance of tying things that you measure in your business (metrics you track) to your goals, and how doing so can help you make clear decisions and inform your strategy.
In this episode on how to use metrics to inform strategy, Alesia Galati and I cover:
About Alesia Galati of Galati Media:
Alesia Galati is the owner of Galati Media and has been listening to podcasts since 2015. As you can imagine, with all that time put in, she knows what goes into creating a standout podcast that captures your audience’s attention even before they press “play”.
Alesia’s helped coaches and thought leaders launch and maintain over 50 podcasts and has developed a signature, thorough system for launching and managing podcasts so you don’t have to stress about anything falling through the cracks!
Alesia lives in sunny North Carolina with her two kiddos and husband. When not helping her clients, Alesia can be found reading over 200 books a year, hiking, and exploring the zoo with her boys.
Favorite podcast: Alesia’s ears have been fine-tuned for high-quality audio and she can only tolerate impeccable podcasts.
She enjoys listening to heavily produced storytelling podcasts like “Greeking Out” by National Geographics Kids when she takes long road trips with her kids.

Today's episode is a result of my own curiosity to become a better speaker, presenter, and podcaster! I always want to learn as much as I can about how to clearly express my thoughts and ideas to others.
My desire is to speak in a clear and effective way so that I share information and exchange ideas with my listeners and participants.
The idea was sparked after reading an article written by Alan Alda on BigThink.com called "3 Rules to Express Your Thoughts so That Everyone Will Understand You" and it uses the power of three in three different ways for you to start applying in your own communication efforts.
If you want to learn for yourself how to clearly express your thoughts, this framework using the power of threes is a great place to start!

Content creation & artificial intelligence seem to go hand-in-hand for many entrepreneurs and small business owners as of late.
I spend a lot of time observing the many uses and applications of ai-generated content creation, listening to podcasts, and reading articles on how people are using it as a tool to ideate, improve writing, and more.
I still have some questions and a few concerns.
My curiosity this month is around the benefits, limitations, and cautions when it comes to content creation using artificial intelligence and I brought in fellow copywriter, Erin Ollila to talk about it with me!
Erin is an SEO copywriter who knows her stuff as it relates to using ai content creation tools like Chat GPT to generate ideas, save time, improve accuracy, and even use as a springboard for conversations with our clients.
In our conversation about Content Creation & Artificial Intelligence, Erin Ollila and I cover:
About my Guest, SEO Copywriter and Copywriting Coach Erin Ollila
Conversion copywriter. Copy Coach. Wing Woman. Word slinger. No matter what you call her, Erin Ollila believes in the power of words and how a message can inform—and even transform—its intended audience.
When she’s not working with big brands and small businesses to marry strategy, storytelling, and SEO, you can find her hosting the Talk Copy to Me podcast or exploring southeastern MA with her family and friends. Erin graduated from Fairfield University with an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and then co-founded Spry Literary Journal, which celebrates undiscovered and established writers' concise, experimental, hybrid, modern, vintage or just-plain-vulnerable writing.

You might want to buckle up your seatbelt for today’s episode and turn your podcast player off 1.5x speed if it’s set there because I’m fired up and full steam ahead in this one! I’ll be sharing some little secrets I’ve been keeping which were a result of some of the things I learned by repeating myself.
In this She Built This episode, I share why repetition is effective for your message and your business as I give you five lessons learned from my most loquacious (and most repetitive) month ever.
Do you ever get tired of talking about the same thing over and over again in your business? Do you feel like you’re repeating yourself?
In the month of April 2023, I repeated myself more than ever in my messaging as I approached the same topic from different angles. It helped me understand deeply why repetition is effective both for us the creators and those receiving the work on the other side.
For me, all that repeating ended up being my most prolific and loquacious month ever and the ideas just kept on coming! Repetition led to my next BIG idea which I’m sharing and announcing for the first time in this episode.

Have you ever wondered how personality types affect communication?
In this She Built This episode about the Enneagram in relationships, my guest Christina Granahan and I dive into the communication styles of each Enneagram type and talk about how our personality types impact our communication with others.
We discuss how learning about how communication styles differ from personality type to personality type, we can become more empathetic and understanding. We also cover how, for each of us, our greatest gifts and assets can also be our greatest liabilities in our personality types.
In this conversation about how personality types affect communication, we cover:
Connect with Christina Granahan:
Christina has been curious about people her entire life. In elementary school, she told her teacher she wanted to be a social worker so it was a surprise to no one when she graduated with her MSW at 22.
She has spent much of her career working with teens and adults living at the intersection of one or more marginalized identities including LGBTQ, BIPOC, people with AIDS, people with substance use disorder, and those who are undocumented, living in the US.
About 15 years ago she expanded her work to include coaching and consulting with staff groups, supervisors, and directors around clinical issues, leadership development, and team building.
Since then, Christina’s deeply focused in on the Enneagram in hopes of getting clarity on some important relationships in her life. Through the learning, she discovered that she was the problem. More accurately, she was a problem and the only one she could change.
Since that first course, Christina has been immersed in the Russ-Hudson tradition, attending the Enneagram Institute, participating in a 15-month course on the Enneagram and conscious living, and is currently completing a certification course in teaching the Enneagram to beginners as well as advanced learners.
Christina is an expert in personality development, developmental trauma, and the Enneagram and is committed to helping others live more consciously, make more informed decisions in their lives, and tell the truth.

You play a role in all aspects of your relationships, life, and business. You are responsible for taking responsibility and being accountable for what's yours to own.
AND it's not all your fault. There's also another side to every story, a lot of circumstances outside of our control, and a lot of chemical reactions we just can't take all the responsibility for when it doesn't go as planned.
This episode is all about taking responsibility for what's yours and leaving the rest, letting it go, and giving yourself a lot of grace along the way.
Join me, Emily Aborn, for a few real-life stories, and a simple process for looking at what's the cause of the friction in your life by getting really honest with what's really holding you back and how to move forward.

The phrase, "You’re the creator of your own reality" changed JJ Flizanes' life.
In this episode, my guest JJ and I talk about the law of attraction as it relates to business and manifesting and creating the life, dreams, and reality that you desire.

She gives us a clear path forward to matter where we are in relation to manifestation and gives tons of resources to start diving into right away.

What defines success? According to the dictionary, success is defined to mean, “The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.”
But today, we’re digging a little deeper into what defines success for YOU and being unapologetic in your pursuit of whatever that looks like.
"Marketing is the tool to help you succeed but if you don't know what success means to you, you'll be on the hamster wheel forever." - Amanda McKinney
My guest, Amanda McKinney breaks down the concept of defining success for yourself into two concise action/feeling steps and helps us redefine the buzzword, “success” in a way that’s meaningful to us.
We get into some of the entrepreneurial buzzwords and unpack their meaning including re-defining success, pivoting, and even the pressure of what to title or label yourself.
You’ll walk away from this conversation with two simple steps you can take TODAY to determine what defines success for YOU.
In this conversation with Amanda McKinney on how success is defined, we cover:
About Amanda McKinney, author, marketing coach, and host of the Unapologetic Entrepreneur Podcast:
Amanda McKinney is an author, podcast host, and coach. She navigated her own accidental entrepreneur journey and built a successful business by defining success on her terms.
Once experiencing this freedom, Amanda fell in love with helping other entrepreneurs follow their passion and build their successful businesses. She’s a natural-born encourager who shares stories of triumph and hardship because she never wants you to feel alone in this journey. Her mission is to help accidental entrepreneurs unapologetically chase their definition of success.

There’s no shortage of difficult people in the world. You can find difficult people in the workplace, groups and organizations, in your relationships, and who knows... maybe you even live with a difficult person!
Learning how to deal with difficult people is a tool we need in our toolbox because it helps us to navigate these situations with more ease each and every time they come up.
As we learn how to deal with difficult people, we create better habits and scripts so we can stress less, use less energy, and create stronger boundaries for ourselves.
Relationships are a wonderful part of life but can also be one of the most challenging when we find ourselves encountering difficult people.
In this episode, with Andrea Bonior, Ph.D, host of the Baggage Check podcast, we talk about how to deal with difficult people and be less of one yourself:

Affect vs Effect: Using Curiosity to Improve Your Writing with Mignon Fogarty
Calling all word nerds, grammar-lovers, and content creators who want to improve your writing! This episode with The Grammar Girl, Mignon Fogarty -queen of quick and dirty grammar tips that’ll elevate your writing and feed your curiosity about the English language.
In this episode, Mignon shares her own story of entrepreneurship and how she started The Grammar Girl podcast, some grammar tips in response to what I often struggle to remember when writing (and maybe you have too), as well how to improve your writing through curiosity.
We also discuss content creation and the practice of reviewing goals and direction regularly to ensure you’re on the right track, and so much more!
Highlights of this episode:
Want a quick and dirty grammar tip prior to listening to the episode?
If you're a fellow word nerd always looking to improve your writing, this one's for YOU.
When you stumble across a grammar rule or Grammarly suggestion you aren't sure of, ie. affect vs. effect, whom vs. who, and how long is TOO long for a sentence... stop and get CURIOUS about WHY. Why is it a rule? When does it apply?
Look it up and find out the reason behind the suggested change.
This two-minute research project helps to cement the principle and makes it more easily remembered the next time it comes up. With curiosity, you can improve your writing faster and more effectively!

Why Does Customer Experience Matter?
Investing time, energy, and money into considering what our clients are experiencing on the other end can be the difference between your brand being like everyone else's and being UNFORGETTABLE.
In this week's episode, with my dear friend and pro-business collaborator, Lindsay Taylor, we get into that and more!
Lindsay is one of my favorite people and bestest friends! Our friendship is such a great example of one of those connections I was talking about in last week’s episode. You truly have NO idea how the next person you meet will change your life. You never know where you'll meet them and spoiler alert: if you haven't listened to last week's episode yet, it doesn't need to be at a formal networking event!
Lindsay Taylor is a genuine true blue human being with a huge heart. She’s always checking in on me, supporting me through thick and thin, and cheering me on. We talk more about what it’s taken to sustain a business friendship in this episode and I think you’ll really appreciate the honesty and authenticity. We share that it hasn’t always been poppy fields and apple orchards. We’ve had to have really difficult conversations and work through stuff, and it's been entirely uncomfortable at times.
In addition to sharing the secrets of our friendship in this episode, we get into a few other great topics around CONNECTION and Customer Experience:
Oh, and of course… we’re sharing something that we’re cooking up together!! Visit UnforgettablyYou.net to learn more and be the FIRST to get in on it!
Unforgettably You is a one-day event in Candia, NH taking place on Wednesday, April 5th from 10am-4pm.
It's an entire day devoted to building your brand and crafting a memorable customer experience. We'll help you tap into what makes you UNFORGETTABLE, how to create more of a connection with your customers and soon-to-be clients, and clearly show your one-of-a-kind value so you can share it with the world.

We hear so much about making a personal connection with clients and customers, especially when it comes to the content we're creating. But how do you really do that? What even is connection, anyway?
There's so often stuff going on behind the scenes around here that I want to share with you and pull out little nuggets and takeaways from, and having just FOUR podcast publishing Wednesdays in February isn’t enough…
Especially when you bite off a topic that's just a little too big to chew like Connection (which turns out just gets my wheels spinning into idea overdrive).
In this episode, I share a personal story and the takeaways behind it about how to build a bridge between you and those interacting with your content so you can build a connection with your clients and customers in the way only YOU can.

My guest this week, Milton Stewart is the host of the "Do it for the Gram Podcast" I discovered his show on my own seemingly endless quest to determine and learn about my Enneagram type. What I learned when I began this journey, and what you'll learn in this episode is that a simple online Enneagram test isn't always the most accurate way to land on your type. You'll also find that simply learning your Enneagram type isn't the actual "work" - the work is using it as an awareness tool, a guide for GROWTH, and a way to deepen connections with others and yourself. Whether you're an Enneagram nerd like me, or if you're thinking, "Ennea-what!?" - I think you'll love this episode as we explore the motivations of each type, and what can change in our lives when we decide to unlock awareness and move past auto-pilot and reactivity to choice.
We cover:
About Milton Stewart:
Milton Stewart, MBA, the founder of Kaizen Careers, Coaching and Consulting LLC and loves facilitating the Enneagram in helping people feel seen, heard and safe. He is one of the very few African-American male Enneagram teachers in the world. Milton believes the Enneagram is more than just a personal tool but a map of how to truly honor the humanity of others. He uses the Enneagram in many ways but the most powerful way he uses it is in spaces of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Milton hosts “Do It For The Gram: An Enneagram Podcast”, which teaches the Enneagram from a very practical standpoint. Milton is the first African-American male International Enneagram Association Global Board Member.

I think often about my upcoming transition to the next decade. At the time of recording this, I'm three and some change years away and I've already put a lot of thought into what I want the big celebration to 4-0 to look like! I also have a little list of things (shocker, I know) started that I'd like to accomplish before I hit the milestone.
But until recently, I hadn't considered any sort of countdown ritual or project. My guest today, Stephanie McLaughlin, host of the Forty Drinks podcast and owner of Savoir Faire Marketing got me thinking up some ideas!
As you listen, think about how you could creatively adapt this to a project that would memorialize something meaningful for you. Maybe it’s a milestone, a transition point, or an entire YEAR of something.

Stephanie's Full Bio:
In 2022, Stephanie McLaughlin celebrates 15 years of small business ownership. Not one to rest on her laurels, she launched a podcast based on the passion project she’s worked on for 10 years.
Savoir Faire is a marketing agency based in New Hampshire that serves small- and medium-sized businesses. The rapid evolution of the web – and how people use it – has empowered consumers. But keeping up with the pace of change frustrates and overwhelms many business owners. That’s where Stephanie and Savoir Faire come in.
The Forty Drinks Project is something Stephanie did when she turned 40. She celebrated the big “four oh” having 40 drinks with 40 friends in 40 different places – and each drink had a thematic connection to the friend. What began as a wacky way to celebrate her birthday extended into a yearlong adventure and turned into something else entirely.
Stephanie had no idea this “just for fun” project would change her life – but it did!
Ever since, she’s been captivated by turning 40 and how other people handle the milestone. This year, the project came to life as The Forty Drinks Podcast, conversations with people about their life experience around turning 40. This birthday often comes wrapped in larger life changes, whether it’s a newfound search for meaning, accepting your mortality, or shedding all those things you did because some external authority said you “should.”
Stephanie lives in Manchester, NH, with her husband Patrick, and a rambunctious black cat named Quinn. Professionally, she’s confident and optimistic. Personally, she’s sassy and a little ridiculous.
Ever look forward to a break, holiday, or vacation SO MUCH only to have it let you down and not go as planned?
That's what happened to me this past holiday season and I decided to share the behind-the-scenes story about the entrepreneur who couldn't take a break. Or at least, not the one she'd planned for.
I hope you enjoy and get some side-splitting (not LITERAL side-splitting, leave that to me...) laughter out of this one, as well as glean some insights and takeaways.

Don't get scared by the word "system" in today's episode title! Systems always have to don't equate to platforms and tools. Complicated doesn't mean more valuable.
This episode will help you reframe your perception of systems and show you simple ways to be more present in the task at hand instead of struggling to figure out what's next.

In this episode, I'll get into the types of tasks we have as entrepreneurs and what four main buckets they tend to fall into. I'll share how I structure my days and weeks and how we might consider a yearly bird's-eye-view that fits in the ROCKS (the most important stuff first). As business owners and entrepreneurs, we have the unique opportunity to help break the cycle of consumerism and level the playing field.
We can choose NOT to engage in marketing scare tactics and psychological manipulation. We can empower, inform, and provide respect to our customers and clients by choosing a better path.
Meet Alice Karolina, Founder of The Ethical Move. Alice created The Ethical move because she believes we can break the cycle by changing the way we sell. It starts with educating ourselves and engaging in a different way.
Alice Karolina has studied manipulation in sales in all its forms throughout her life. She seeks to open the door for a transparent, thriving marketplace that works for everyone.

In short, visibility is getting your message out there and seen. We often associate it with showing up on social media, attending networking events, and gaining speaking engagements but it can take many different forms.
At the root of visibility is connection. Creating connection with your ideal clients, with your audience, with those you’re collaborating with, and creating connection by remaining consistent.
In this podcast, I'm sharing six lessons I've learned (so far) when it comes to visibility and showing up and how you can apply it for yourself:
Visibility is a buzzword in the entrepreneurial space and everyone wants to be visible, but not everyone wants to embrace all the unique gifts, challenges, and realities of deciding to show up.

The word "launch" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
There are all sorts of ways to launch, different sizes of launches, and you could be launching just about anything.
You and I have probably launched lots of things:
Your business
A new product or service in your business
An event
A workshop
A collaboration
A course
A podcast
A membership
The list goes on. I won’t.
Launching involves more than meets the eye AND comes with more challenges and unique experiences than you see on that finished sales page.
This is one of the many topics in the entrepreneurial space I want to start opening up the conversation around: Launching, scaling, moving from 1:1 to 1:many. What really happens?
Fortunately, I’ve found a launch PRO who's going to help us see some of the mindset shifts entrepreneurs need to make in order to have a successful launch, as well as what you need to consider long before launching in order to make it fly. We talk about scaling, pivoting to sink into your genius zone, and the reality of running multiple businesses.

I first heard Kendra's story at the She Built This Summer Gala in June, and I deeply connected with her stories, her why, her definition of success, and her true care and compassion driving her client interactions.
Kendra Kearney is a Financial Advisor at Rise Private Wealth Management who brings a strong sense of purpose to her work!
Growing up, Kendra witnessed as her grandfather, the breadwinner in the family, was the only one who had any interaction with their finances and wealth. He passed away when Kendra was just 17 years old, one year into his retirement. Kendra took her grandmother to her first-ever financial advising meeting and the advisor didn’t even know who Kendra’s grandmother was or what her needs were.
Kendra has made it her mission to help people feel empowered and secure by understanding and participating in their financial journey.
Kendra has worked in financial services since 2004. She loves the emphasis on the client experience at Rise. Kendra loves working with clients who share the same values she does and who have big goals and dreams which she’ll get into more in today’s episode!

What do you really want in your business?
You are in for a treat with today's guest, Kim Dawson, as she helps to guide us to answer the question beneath the questions:
It all comes back to, "What do you want your business to do for your life?"

Using her 20+ years of entrepreneurial experience along with a background in accounting, Kim helps small businesses optimize their pricing and procedures while navigating niche markets and building a team, without cutting into their profitability. After working with Kim, clients often double (and a few tripled) their revenue – all while hiring new team members, doing more of what they enjoy, and gaining their free time back

What we say matters.
How we say it matters, and sometimes… without meaning to, we cause harm to others with our communication.
We can attack others, cast judgment, and make demands, unintentionally.

"Thanks for your purchase! Can we get your feedback!?"
We are asked for our feedback left and right. We're also giving it unknowingly more often than we think.
When it comes to receiving it, why can it sometimes be so difficult? Of course, we all WANT feedback to do better, grow, and be the best humans we can be... but at the same time, wouldn't it be nice if someone could just pat us on the back and tell us, "All good!"?
Maybe if they just delivered it the bad news to us sandwiched between all the positive stuff (the Oreo cookie technique)?
Today's guest, Sheila Heen will share the unique difficulty around receiving feedback; why this conversation can be so difficult whether you're a giver of it or a receiver.

This week, I'm bringing you the journey of LaFortune Djabea, President and Owner of Mola Foods in Nashua, NH.
This is an inspiring success story of How She Built This, from when she first came to the U.S. in the year 2000 with just $200 in her pocket to now having her products in many retail locations through New Hampshire.
In this episode, Lafortune shares her story of entrepreneurship, and what NOURISH means to her. I hope this episode and conversation inspire you as much as me!

When you hear the word "sales" does it make you want to run for the hills and never return?
A lot of people associate selling with an "icky" feeling. They don't want to come across as pushy, shiesty, or gross to their buyer.
Just like there's no one magic formula to selling (despite what anyone on the internet tells you), there's no right or WRONG way to sell except for in a way that feels inauthentic and misaligned for YOU.
The experience can be a present, connected, aligned conversation rather than just a chance for CONVERSION.
When you come from the place that feels true to your style and natural tendencies, the outcome is a lot brighter (whether they buy from you or choose someone else)!

About Lisa Dadd
Lisa Dadd spent 15 years in the competitive industry of corporate healthcare, mastering strategic sales, marketing and management skills, from the world’s largest pharmaceutical company. In addition to the success, climbing the corporate ladder offered, was a deep sense her greatest potential was yet to be realized. It took years as an independent consultant, and an intense training in leadership development and social emotional learning, to uncover an innate way to access that potential.
Leveraging a diagnostic tool called Soul Language, Lisa now works with innovative leaders to integrate an awareness of who they are at their core, into the way they do business. The success of her process is particularly related to her unique approach to sales training. Soul Sales teaches the art of creating buy-in, through the enrolling language of one’s natural essence.
“I’ve done the thing, I’ve arrived... why do I feel so terrible?” This is the question my guest, Cait Donovan, spent almost seven years asking herself and working to get to the root of.
Why did she feel exhausted all the time? Resentful of people asking her to do things? And mad at people she loved?
She’d heard of burnout affecting hospital workers and corporate workers, but not someone who’d done their own thing and built their own business.
Cait made it her full-time job to heal from her burnout and figure out what to do with what she was feeling. In today’s episode, she shares what she did to start her journey towards feeling NOURISHED again and how she helps others do the same.

Everything I'd planned, started on, and brainstormed felt a little off-base and a little trite, as I was, like many of us, feeling a lot of what's happening in the world.

For my 100th episode, I thought it would be fun to hear from another She Built This original- my husband Jason Aborn as we close this first chapter of the podcast. Join us in a fun and lively husband-wife conversation.
We get into:
Jason’s been my number one listener - and is probably the only one that’s heard them all (plus episodes NOT aired), besides me!
He's my third ever male guest and is She Built This' and my biggest cheerleader.
I could not ask for a better person standing by my side.
I know it sounds harsh... but it's true. And it's been my #1 lesson during this month of June, which I dubbed the month of "RESET".
I was at my wit's end and decided it was necessary to pull back a bit and take a look at where I was, where I was going, and what the next steps looked like.
In this episode, I talk about the clarity and passion that was there all along and was brought back to life in the daily DOING.
I also share my three RESET activities (which you can do too!):
Life Audit
Time (and task enjoyment) Audit
Emotional Wellbeing Audit
And where the podcast is going next! Jason will be joining me for Episode #100 next week! And next month, July 2021, is all about brand Y-O-U!
The other night, I was falling asleep trying to put my finger on the difference between HELPING and people-pleasing.
I think I nailed it. For me, anyway. People-pleasing DRAINS me of energy and helping BOOSTS my energy and gives me life!
In this episode, I get into my confessions as a people-pleaser in recovery:
I’m about to hit episode 100 soon and I have such an action-packed docket of guests coming!
I’m also trying to convince my husband Jason to join me as a guest and share what we’ve learned since being in business together and then separately for 7 years. But we’ll see. I don’t want him to people-please us just cause we all want to hear from him, ya know. Email me HERE if you want him to be on the show.
This episode is a never-before-tried-by-me activity based on the question I heard in Oprah's Super Soul podcast (The Give), "What is the energy you choose to bring to the world?"
“Life can be measured in exchanges of energy - positive or negative, what is the energy you choose to bring to the world? Positive exchanges multiply and grow which is why giving feels so good.” - Oprah
The legacy I want to leave and the energy I want to bring is one of LOVE, lifting others up, showing them that they can do it!
This episode is one part me living that legacy out, and one part YOU thinking about yours.
Instructions after listening:
Ask your friends, family, and fans one question, “What three attributes make me unique?”
Use the hashtag #SBTCheerleadingChallenge, you can tell them this is part of the She Built This community so that it takes some of the heat off, you're not fishing for compliments or something
Head into She Built This group and check out the pinned post (I’ll have it pinned to the top until Saturday, June 12th) and share what people said. What blew you away, what gave you the chills, what gave you a revelation about yourself that made you feel seen and heard?
Did it resonate with you as the truth about who you are?
You can do this via email to select people, on your Facebook, your Instagram, etc.
And I invite you to consider the legacy and impact you’re making NOW in the lives of others when making your decisions this week.

This episode is a mishmash of things I've been thinking about and feeling lately. The world getting back to normal again... what that looks like from a time and attention standpoint.
Can you build a business without social media?
There are a certain number of businesses that don't NEED social media, but chances are, they can all benefit and grow with a good social media strategy in place.
Today, I'm going to be talking about whether or not you need it as a business, and my seven tips to make it suck less cause spoiler alert: you probably need it for your business and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
I talk about:
I can’t wait to hear which of these tips resonate and you might want to add in AND if your perspective changed at all if in fact, you're feeling a little over social media-ed.
I don't often share about my messy mucky stuff until I am on the other side of it... but the topic of anxiety is something that has been on my heart and mind for a long time to talk to you all about and I am unpacking it a little bit in this episode, how it comes up for me, and some of the why behind it as I do the work to unpack it.
I know it affects us all in different ways and today I am sharing my personal experience with it and what I found at the root of some of it. In this episode:

In this episode, I share a personal growth moment. Something that has been holding me back for awhile... in fact, ever since I started my business.

The buck finally stopped for me this month, and I lived to tell the tale. In this episode, I share my story about how I got out of my own damn way and decided to stop holding myself back.
I hope this episode will encourage and inspire you to do the same because:

The morning of July 4th, 2018 began like any other in Sadie Raymond's household. What Sadie and her family didn't know, however, was that by the end of the day the course of all of their lives, especially that of their teenage son, Corbin would change forever.
After receiving a phone call that chilled her to the bone, Sadie rushed to the scene of a car accident alongside a forested road in their home state of New Hampshire.
There, she discovered that her son had been a passenger in a car that had collided with a tree and was on his way to the hospital via ambulance.
For 121 days, Corbin fought an arduous battle for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children's Hospital and at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. New Englanders from across his home state and beyond declared themselves Corbin Strong. His family and friends found their strength and resilience in the face of adversity. And, through faith and love against all odds, Corbin won.
Meet NaughtyGood Bites Woman of the month, Sadie Raymond, who teaches us the power of being THANKFUL in all things and what that means to her.
Sadie Raymond is a single mother of four children: Corbin, Grace, Cohen, and Grayson. A lifelong resident of Boscawen, NH, Sadie is a graduate of Merrimack Valley High School and New Hampshire Technical Institute. Her greatest joy in life is being a mother.

Today’s episode is a short and sweet and a little anecdote about my niece Annabel and the lesson I took away from it.
I have shared with you my holiday tradition of making Macaroons for the family and then bringing them to Christmas. This year, because we didn’t go visit our family in person, I made macaroons for everyone and shipped them with their presents.
A couple of weeks ago, my niece, Annabel, told her mom she wanted to FaceTime with me and when she got me on the phone she said, “Auntie Emily, I really liked those chocolate biscuits. Can we have some more?”
What did this simple request teach me? What can it teach YOU about sharing your voice and stepping up to ask for what you want and need?

Last year, I was nominated as the December NaughtyGood Bite Woman of the month for the theme, "Be Selfless". So, today, I bring on the NaughtyGood Bite Commander in Chief, herself, Lindsay Taylor for a discussion on what being selfless means, and maybe how that definition has changed a tad since last year!
We talk about all the things including:
This episode is a whole lot of fun!
We've all likely been on the receiving end of those icky sales emails, ice cold LinkedIn messages, and mass Facebook Messenger sends. Today, we talk with Charlene DeCesare, of sales advisory firm, Firewalk Sales, about how to flip the script when it comes to your sales emails and language in general.

Join your host, Emily Aborn, in a collaboration with Lindsay Taylor of NaughtyGood Bites as we bring you the NaughtyGood face of November, Sheila Holmes. Sheila was chosen as the nominee for showing up and being her thankful, grateful, joyful self for the theme "Be Thankful". Sheila was nominated by Heather Heigis.
Each month, NaughtyGood Bites chooses a woman that was nominated by another in conjunction with a monthly theme. To nominate the NaughtyGood woman in your life, visit their website here.
Today we introduce you to Sheila, owner of Halos Hair Salon and Meraki Therapeutic Massage.
Sheila has been the successful owner of Halos since 1995, cutting and styling hair—making her clients feel confident and beautiful when they walk out her door. Sheila’s experience as a stylist and her genuine and giving spirit, continually turned first-time clients into long-time and loyal patrons.
In 2001, Shelia began exhibiting symptoms of Lyme disease, which went undiagnosed for quite some time before finally landing on a viable treatment.
In 2018, Sheila began having problems with her vision, ultimately being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that impaired her vision enough she could no longer drive and made daily tasks that much more difficult... including cutting hair.
This did not stop Sheila. Due to her impaired vision, she was forced to give up her love of cutting hair, but not her love of helping people feel their best. Sheila went back to school and brought massage therapy to her salon—where she can now rely on touch, and not sight—to bring beauty to her clients.
When asked what “be thankful” means to her, Sheila responded: “I am thankful for what I have learned about the human spirit and the strength, weakness and survival of my own. I am thankful for the ability to now FEEL a person's intentions—their compassion, understanding and judgments in any given situation. This is a gift. I am visually unable to see a smile, but I can sense it. I am literally forced to trust my instincts and feelings. I am now able to FEEL the kind-hearted humans that I am so blessed to have all around me.”
Sheila has made a career and life out of making people feel confident and beautiful. Her challenges have not defined her... they have inspired her and made her an example to us all—wake up every day and be thankful for what you do have... life is plentiful!
Here is your permission slip to rest, stop forcing, and give yourself a much-needed break... even before you get tired!
In this super duper short episode, I share about my new M.O. in how I am approaching rest and taking TIME. And how sometimes, it's OK to cross things right off that list when they do not need to be there in the first place.
I also share my top-secret wish-making formula, which thus far has not let me down!

Have you read Don Miguel Ruiz' book The Four Agreements?
It is a short read that talks about four important principles or "agreements" if you will about how to make our lives better by reducing self-limiting beliefs and thought patterns.
The Four Agreements Are:
Be Impeccable With Your Word
Don't Take Anything Personally
Don't Make Assumptions
Always Do Your Best
Here is my spin on how to apply them to your business, as well as how to ask yourself some of the deeper questions to improve your words and actions for a better life!
Here are the follow-up questions for you to journal on/work on after listening to the episode:
Be Impeccable With Your Word
Are you aware of the power of your word? What are some of the ways you’ve experienced the power of the word in your life?
Don’t Take Anything Personally
What are some of the ways you have taken things personally? Do you believe the opinions of others are more important than your own? Do you take it personally if someone disagrees with you?
Don’t Make Assumptions
Provide some examples of why making assumptions can cause so much suffering. Do you assume worst-case scenarios?
Always Do Your Best
What are some examples of how practicing this agreement would transform your life? Do you tend to push yourself too hard? Do you know when you’ve done your best?
Do you find it easy or difficult to practice these agreements? Has practicing one or more of the Four Agreements changed your life?

Many of those things had to be put on hold, so I have found myself experimenting in other aspects of my life and it's bringing me closer to who I really am!
This episode is about opportunities to welcome experimentation in your own life and challenging you to see where, if anywhere, you are able to try things in a new way, with a different approach or change in perspective.
What are you waiting for?

This one is straying a bit from the "norm" for my podcasts. I am not necessarily talking business, I am not necessarily talking about entrepreneurship, but I am telling a story that has forever changed my life and the way I have chosen to live. I hope that it will do so for you as well and that you spread your positive changes to others you meet as well.
I think that is all the intro text I am going to give you for now. I would love to hear from you and your thoughts if any of this hits home for you.
Join me in my conversation with Dave Swillum as he tells us the story of he and his wife Meagan and how they are working together to create a life in which they are both living their dreams. After getting burned out and not living his passion full-time and a tough conversation in which he learned his wife, Meagan, wasn’t pursuing her dreams yet either... the two decided to blow their lives apart in order to achieve their dreams of living full time doing what they both love. Today, Dave freelances audio out of a mentor's studio while he works to build his own space and maintain his now long-distance relationship with his wife Meagan who is pursuing her vet degree in TN.
Dave Swillum is the audio engineer behind NH based audio production business Crawlspace Audio, podcast host of The Waking Up From Work Podcast, and local indie artist. With an MBA in music business from the SNHU Berklee partner program and a background working live sound for national artists, interning at a record label and recording studios in New England, and touring with his personal bands around the country Dave has a formed a unique passion for both business and music supporting artists.

A little bit love story, a little bit mindset, a little of everything in this episode!

I also share with you about my upcoming She Built This June Challenge and how to get in on it!

So often in our lives, we are forced to take stock and perhaps put the magnifying glass on things that have been pillars of our existence... yet might not actually be serving us in the best way possible. This year, I am working on breaking down some of those beliefs for myself and removing that which does not actually help me or others, but instead is just a dusty old belief or outdated assumption about how life should be.
Those keystones, along with being intuitive in all aspects of life --including your business, is what Tammy Jordan and I talk about in this week's podcast.
You are going to love being a fly on the wall in this real, authentic, and thought-provoking conversation with me and Tammy. I have had several beautiful conversations with her and I am a HUGE fan! I think you will be too.
Tammy is an author, speaker, coach, and consultant in many things HR, Organization Development and personal development. As the founder and CEO of Leader Consulting Group, she works with business owners and executives in defining their unique culture, hiring and promoting the best talent, developing and training agile and authentic leaders and teams, and managing growth and change. Since 2011, lcg has been a unique consulting firm believing in hearts and minds working together and that connection and empowerment are paramount to business results and success.

In this episode, I welcome back Crystal Farley of CFar Beyond the Box and Women's Entrepreneurship Day NH.
Crystal was my co-host on the She Built This podcast and she has since gone from entrepreneur to entrepreneur AND employee! Come hear about her pivot and join us in a conversation about what's new in her world.
A little goody for you this week! Join me in my conversation with Julie Trieb as we talk about her number ONE piece of advice for female entrepreneurs and women. We talk about how she successfully started her online e-commerce business, "Designs by JuJu" sixteen years ago and scaled it to a multi-million dollar family business. And of course, her answer to the question, "What's next after THAT kind of success?!"
Designs by JuJu is a leading provider of adorable digital machine embroidery designs in the industry for the home embroiderer. Her passion for creating, marketing, maintaining authenticity, and nurturing her connection with her ideal customers has been responsible for steady growth since 2003. Owner and Founder, Julie Trieb believes being true to yourself and what you love is key to maintaining joy in your business and attracting your ideal customers. She has most recently learned how showing up real, vulnerable and even sometimes messy as your beautiful authentic self will spark joy again and restore burnout that so many entrepreneurs face. Listening to your intuition, discovering your "why", the importance of self-care and daily spiritual business rituals, authenticity, how customers crave real and resonate with imperfection are all topics that Julie is super passionate about.
Has anyone else been watching people get a-ha moments, epiphanies, and breakthroughs during this time and wondering when theirs is coming?
Here is my very short episode about WAITING and how utterly uncomfortable it can be. But, like you, I am trusting that there is something on the other side that is worth waiting for.
We talk a lot about putting the right things out on social media, connecting with your clients before trying to sell to them, and focus a lot on our brand's colors, website, etc. etc.
But how much of an emphasis do you place on the image you are actually portraying to your clients? How do they feel when they see your headshot? Does it attract the kind of client you want to work with.
Lisa Arnold and I, of Lisa Arnold Photography talk all about this; but we get into much more as right now... photographers are temporarily taking some time (along with the rest of us) to be home. Lisa shares openly about how her business is being affected right now and how she continues to show up with a mindset of service and helping others. This is a truly beautiful podcast episode!
Lisa's Bio: A self-taught photographer, Lisa started her career shooting weddings. While she loved working with brides at their weddings, she fell out of love the sameness of each event and fell in love with the personal connection of portraits. After about 15 years of weddings, she transitioned, nearly entirely to portraits. Lisa has shaped her business with the question, "How do you want to be seen?" and has a podcast by the same name. It’s pretty likely that most of us will be impacted by COVID-19 and the state of our country as it is right now. Maybe you have been encouraged to start working from home, conduct your meetings virtually, not network as much, or at all. Maybe your children are staying home from school for the foreseeable future. So, what can we do when it feels like everything is being forced to pause? Here are my thoughts on what we can do as business owners and professionals during this time to support ourselves and one another, as well as ways to stay connected and get involved in the coming weeks.
