ENROL TODAY: http://courses.thehumanenterprise.com.au/--------------------This is a very sensitive topic.Feedback may be the breakfast of champions but how do we serve it without being accused of bullying? In this episode, I tackle a sensitive yet critical question relating to accusations of bullying:"There is so much written on psychological safety lately. What have you found that works? I even had a partner say the other day to me, he'd love to give someone some "harsh" feedback (his words not mine) to one of his associate directors but probably won't as he would be accused of bullying. Now that really worried me. What should I tell him?"With legislation and workplace expectations shifting, leaders often feel caught between providing essential guidance and avoiding potential backlash. One way to address this is by using these three key principles for giving feedback that helps people grow without crossing the line. The goal is always to help others shine, not to avoid the tough conversations. What’s your approach to balancing psychological safety with honest communication? Sales are still good, and the new Sales Director is a good operator, but I find myself spending much more time in the function, more than I should. I don’t want our standards to slip but there is so much work to be done elsewhere as a relatively new General Manager. Any suggestions?"Many of the ways we behave as leaders are 'masking' unresolved feelings of uncertainty and a lack of clarity about our leadership responsibilities and what it is that we should be doing as leaders.Unable to cope with this, we project it (or judge) onto others to ease our internal tension. I have considered changing to N.F.P. work but still need a certain income to pay for an ever increasing mortgage and day-to-day expenses. Apart from being respectful and developing trust, how do you create “ safe spaces” for athletes to pushback on coaches' decisions at times”It is no overnight solution but if you want to address social friction or the fear of speaking up in your team or organisation, then knowing these four stages of psychological safety is a great place to start. In this episode, I outline 3 simple strategies you can action when someone on your team, just won't change.
Putting them on a performance improvement plan should be your very last step and hopefully one of the strategies in this video will mean it won't get to that.
Here's the question:
I'm having trouble with one of my direct reports. They are a very keen team player yet make commitments and rarely follow through. Particularly, if they think their actions may piss somebody off. I appreciate their sensitivity but at times they need to make a call. Yet, even though I've pointed this out several times, their behaviour continues. Before putting them on a performance improvement plan, do you have any ideas?
I’d love you to reflect on the 3 simple strategies outlined and consider which one you need to better employ.
I hope it helps.

In this episode, I outline a technique for managing your energy. How to make sure you're focusing on what really counts and keeping your MOJO alive (We see MOJO as the combination of MOmentum and JOy).
Here's the question we received:
"I love my job. I love the people I work with. Yet more and more I'm involved with presentations and activities, that although others see as important, hold little interest for me. In fact, at times, I know I'm coming across as bored. Have you worked with other leaders that feel the same? How do they handle this dilemma?"
It's so easy as a leader to get caught up in other people's agendas.
Don't do it. You'll regret it.
Sure there are some activities you must do from time to time, but if there are too many of them and you're spending too much time doing them, you'll lose your spark.

“I have a question not an answer. How do you address a leaderless organisation that has people nominated as leaders by position.“

Part of that is initially accepting what you can’t change with “cheerful fatalism” and then using your energy to look at what can change.
Starting with yourself.

In these 'crazy' times it's easy to get bogged down in your personal bunker, your workload, your priorities, your family, your challenges, your "stuff".
And yet, more than ever, it's during these times that your leadership abilities need to be focused on how you can support others, help them grow and help them stay connected to community. In the words of Bryan Ferry "Let's Stick Together".
Here's this week's question:
"Can you provide an overview of servant leadership and how it can be applied in a leadership role within a public-serving organisation?"
In this episode, I outline what "servant" leadership is all about, who you need to care about and provide a couple of tips on how to apply servant leadership in your life.
Enjoy.

In this episode of Mentoring with Mitch, I offer some ideas on how to deal with one of the most difficult situations you'll encounter in your career - the inappropriate behaviour of your boss.
Here's the question: "When your organisation indicates there is an important inclusion and diversity initiative but a senior leader that is great at 'managing up' is not supporting this with their insensitive style, in fact from the ground up is the cause of a larger than expected staff turnover, is there anything you can do to effect change?"
So if you're not interested in "Waiting on the World to Change", I overview 3 options of dealing with it: -Escalating -Escaping -Embracing
We'll then go through 3 tried and tested steps on how to deal with the issue with the understanding that by not "moving towards the tension" things can only get worse.
Enjoy.

In this episode, I share some ideas on what to do if you feel stuck in your career. You know that feeling which is so beautifully expressed by Queen in their song "I want to break free!".
Here's the question:
"As a leader, it is important to grow those around you. However with little ability to move up for me personally and having giving opportunities to those under you to grow and develop and they are now well beyond you in terms of influence and almost status what would you suggest I do to continue my own development?"
The way I see it there are three options. That of IN, OUT and UP.
I'm sure this weeks episode will get you thinking about your own career and how the grass may not always be greener on the other side.
"We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time." -T.S. Eliot -

What a great question we have this week. In essence, it's "Is a human enterprise possible?".
Here's the question:
"My aspiration is to build a team and organisational culture that is kind and compassionate, that is high performing and results-driven. Often I am told that it is not possible for these qualities to co-exist. Do you think it is possible, and have you come across any successful (and unsuccessful) examples?"
In this episode, I passionately reinforce the idea that you can have a kind and compassionate organisation AND still provide outstanding results.
And it starts with servant leadership, a strong connection to a service-based mission and loving the people you work with. Or as Stephen Stills taught us: "Love the One You're With!"
I hope you enjoy a couple of key ideas to help you build 'the human enterprise' in your workplace. Enjoy.

In this episode, we explore when to "cut your people loose", "let them go", or the best I've ever heard is "free up their career".
Here's the question:
Whilst acknowledging the process and legal requirements of Fair Work Australia and the cost of recruitment & retraining; what are the triggers that should determine when a manager should continue to persist with an underperforming employee using a Performance Management Plan (or other techniques) to the possible detriment of the rest of the team, or decide to "cut them loose"?
If you're truly committed to creating a human enterprise, no matter how underperforming the player, I believe there should always be a part of you that never feels too good about such decisions.
How do you lessen that feeling? What do you need to consider before you make such a call?
I give you B.A.S.K. - A simple tool from the human enterprise, which you can use to analyse performance gaps. It will also help you feel more certain you are making the "right" decision.
The 'right' decision in regards to regulations, the 'right' decision for the individual and the 'right' decision for your team and the organisation.

In this first episode of Mentoring with Mitch, I draw on the brilliant work of Barry Oshry to answer the following question:
"Working in a large organisation, there are lots of times where upper management requirements and staff needs conflict. Working in middle management can feel like being the meat in the sandwich. Do you have any advice on how to work best with these conflicting needs?"
If you sometimes feel like the meat in the sandwich (and believe me, even the most senior leaders experience this) then where you put your energy is essential. In this video, I give you advice on how to manage energy in these situations and also share 3 strategies for speaking with "tops".

One of your roles as a leader is to develop the other leaders around you. This should be your legacy. And one of the main ways of doing this is through coaching.
In this video, I outline the main outcomes to aim for as a coach, either internally or externally.
And remember when asking about "the problem", make sure you ask what the "REAL" problem is because so often we are presented with the gap or the symptoms, not the real cause.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention in the video another good question...
"How is the problem being managed?"
This beautifully leads to the last question regarding ownership.
Have fun. Be proactive. Be an unreasonable friend in your questioning.
Enjoy the video.

One of the things I see great leaders constantly do is work on controlling their egos and hubris.
As an old "rocker", I believe wholeheartedly in what the Aussie Group Skyhooks sang:
"Ego is not a dirty word don't believe what you've seen or what you've heard" Skyhooks
It's a part of who you are. It's your ego that got you to where you are now. However, unless you control it, it may also be the very thing that will get you stuck. It may be your undoing.
That's why I absolutely love Hamish Thomson's new book It's Not Always Right to Be Right.
The title says it all.
"But wait there's more!"
In the book, Hamish, a seasoned global leadership executive, not only shares invaluable lessons from his 30-year career, but he has also partnered with industry authorities and thought leaders to comment on the lessons within. Like all good leaders, he realised that his opinion is not the only one on the block so he backs this up by asking for others' input.
Now that's humility!
This episode of Leaders for Life Radio is jam-packed full of Hamish's wisdom on life, business and why it's "not always right to be right". While it's titled CEO Leadership Lessons, there's something in there for leaders from all walks of life and at every level.
As you listen, please reflect on where you've been insisting that you're right and perhaps it isn't getting you what you want. Because some people would rather be right than happy.
You can learn more about Hamish and his book by visiting his website at www.hamishrthomson.com
Alternatively, you contact him via hamish@hamishrthomson.com
His book is now available in all good book stores and online.
Happy listening.

One of the key responsibilities you have as a leader is to unlock the potential of those around you. And that often starts with getting them to believe in themselves.
There's nothing as powerful as a leader who looks you in the eye and says "I believe in you".
But even the best of us can experience a drop in confidence at times. Our self-doubt increases, our negative self-talk increases and our overall results and joy decrease.
In this episode, I share four keys to developing your confidence and the confidence of those around you.
Enjoy and please share it with any leaders you know who want or need a confidence boost.

In crazy, turbulent times, then again in ANY times, we are constantly seeking clarity.
As a leader, your job is to provide it.
In fact, without it, you could be unknowingly causing psychological stress to your team members.
In this video, I overview four words or questions, that if answered, will give you and others the clarity they desire. This will allow them to maximise their contribution to both your team and business and maximise the meaning, satisfaction and joy they get from their work.

Don't let what's happening in the world right now determine who you are.
Many of us might be blaming these turbulent times for preventing us from reaching our outcomes. That's certainly a normal response. While, yes, so much is clearly out of our control, it's more helpful for you, your organisation and your family to focus on what you CAN control. Here's a way of approaching your goals that might help you shake off that funk.
In this video, I challenge the well-known maxim of starting with the end in mind. I parallel the floating of a company through an IPO with floating new parts of your identity using IPO (it's a different mnemonic) to achieve your goals.
It's only when we change our identity that true transformation has any chance of succeeding.

We are all a bit distracted lately.
Working from home, iso, COVID restrictions, layoffs... they all take a toll on your culture. But keeping culture alive during these times is more important than ever.
We may all understand the importance of continually marketing during a downturn, yet many forget to emphasise their "internal marketing" during tough times.
Having your "external brand" (Customer Value Proposition) match your "internal brand" (Employee Value Proposition) is what walking the talk is all about.
In this video, I overview three key elements of a great culture and the four key levers you need to build a "culture to be proud of".

In this video, I share one of my favourite tools for having a magnificent life. Setting goals you don't know how you will achieve.
Sure S.M.A.R.T. goals may work in the corporate world and for some individual goals.
Without some personal "DUM" goals, however, you'll never ever BE who you could BE.
Enjoy the video.
P.S. Sorry team, I got carried away with setting DUM goals. When I mention S.M.A.R.T. goals I say “reach” instead of "realistic". Guess that's never been where I play.

In this video, I explore the idea of EVERYDAY COURAGE (or everyday heart).

My father-in-law taught Deborah, my wife, a great business and personal lesson. He would often say:
"Never drop your standards".
Now, I don't think that any of us deliberately go out of our way to drop our standards.
It just happens.
But, if we aren't vigilant and conscious of our game, before you know it, we find ourselves playing at a much lower level than what we are capable of. We start accepting it as the "new norm".
Don't let it happen!

Have you seen the movie The Castle?
You need to! You have to!
It’s a story about how an Aussie family have their lives disrupted by an unwanted, “unprecedented” crisis.
The repossession of their family home and how they responded says so much about OUR GREAT AUSSIE SPIRIT in such times (like COVID-19).
Sit back and listen to Kevin Leighton who has held several General Management roles and is now responsible for technology sales nationally of a global workplace technology services company.
Together we unpack the incredible number of leadership and personal lessons for all of us on how to be strong in the face of such adversity.
You’ll love it.
One of the most endearing things about Daryl Kerrigan, the film's protagonist, is the way he embraces everyone and welcomes different cultures into his world.
Your work family could learn a lot from his strong family.
You see, harnessing the huge array of differences you have in your organisation is what will make you strong as well.
It’s the key to building one of the most powerful forces for results in any organisation.
CULTURE.
Contact us about our experiential workshop Come Together: When Cultures Meet, based on the work or Dr Barry Oshry from Power and Systems.
Together we will overview the power of difference and inclusivity to build cultures where everybody can contribute. A culture where everybody has the opportunity to have their full potential realised.
In fact, the potential of your organisation is only limited by the potential growth of your people.
Let’s chat about whether our half-day virtual version or full-day face-to-face full immersive workshop is best for your needs.
Make inclusion “the vibe of the thing” in your organisation now.
Call us on 61 2 9905 5535 or email us at soul@thehumanenterprise.com.au
Until next time...
Find the Passion. Develop the Skills. Make the Numbers. Make a Difference.
If a recent merger or acquisition has disrupted the status quo in your organisation, this programme can help. Come Together is a unique Leadership Development experience that gives recently merged organisations or teams a system for bridging any interpersonal gaps between each culture allowing you to fully maximise the synergies of the merge. You may be focusing on the negative consequences of COVID-19.
You may not.
You may have come to grips with the pandemic and are constantly looking for the gold, the possibilities.
In this lesson, I'm going to encourage you to do both. Not just during the pandemic, but as a maxim of great leadership.
It's based around a survivor of a POW camp during the Vietnam War, James Stockdale, a naval officer who went on to be a Vice Presidential Candidate in the USA.
I hope you enjoy this brief overview of The Stockdale Paradox, and that it gets you thinking about your own frame of mind.

In this lesson, I share some ideas to get your thinking about how COVID-19 could have meaning for you.
How you could look back on this period in your life and link it to something meaningful.
My wish for you is that the 3 ideas I mention will be a springboard for you to seek out that meaning.

Yet for some, maybe even you, it can be extremely traumatic.
Not necessarily the virus itself, but the emotions the virus surfaces within you, from past unresolved experiences.
In this video, I talk about several "repressed" emotions that you or someone you know may be experiencing.
I also encourage you to be even more gentle and compassionate with yourself and others.

As you know, we create videos every fortnight to help you lead in all areas of your life. COVID-19 has now taken us in a new direction.
THIS TIME IT'S DIFFERENT
This is the first in a series of 5 lessons I'll be releasing to help you, your team and your family come to grips with some of the emotions you may be experiencing through this period of unsettling uncertainty.
In this first lesson, I talk about two types of grief, the stages of grief, and what we all crave for in these "unprecedented" times.
I'd love you to watch these with your family, or whoever you're living with at the moment and just talk. Share it with your team (virtually) and just talk. And be with each other.
Pain shared, is pain divided. Because just accepting where you're at, and where others are at, creates even more of a sense of connection and community. And that's what we all need to pull us through.
In subsequential lessons, I'll be sharing other insights and strategies that I hope you also find helpful, inspiring yet realistic.

The story at the moment is not good.
We certainly can't "distort reality" and make things better. That would be ludicrous, dangerous and irresponsible.
And yet, we can become, even in these torrid times, much more aware of the stories we tell ourselves.
I initially hesitated to send this fortnightly lesson out with all that's going on around us.
At the same time, it's probably important to stop and reflect on your leadership and your headspace more than ever at the moment.
I might be proved terribly wrong but at the moment the story I've decided to tell myself goes a little bit like this:
"It's going to get tough, really tough".
"It's about time we did more virtual training anyway".
"How can we use the space (no face-to-face workshops) to provide something special to our clients, that we would never have had the time to do so".
"When we do come out the other side, our business, our team, and our partnerships with people will be stronger than ever".
Is that true?
I don't know.
But it's my story and I'm sticking to it.
In this lesson, I unpack the typical way we tell ourselves stories, the behaviours that follow and the results that ensue.
The message is simple:
CHANGE YOUR STORY. CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
Want to take yourself, your business, your team, your family, your community to new heights? It starts with reflecting on the current stories you're telling yourself AND THEN mustering up the courage you'll need to change them.
Here's a simple technique you can apply.

I've worked with some good leaders and some great ones.
The great ones do it differently and yet they all have very similar traits and behaviours.
What about you? How do you shape up?
I define great in 3 ways: - Great Results - Great Customer Relationships (Call in Brand, Net Promotor Scores, Value-Adding etc) - And of course Incredible Management of People (Engagement, Talent Development, Joy, Meaning)
Success leaves clues and patterns. In this video, I outline 5 of those patterns I've noticed in great leaders I've worked with over the years.
As you listen, I'd love you to reflect on the degree of focus you give to each trait, score yourself on a scale of 1-10 and then choose one trait or behaviour you're going to focus on in the next week.
Enjoy.

Yes, 360s are a powerful tool when used correctly like the title of this video suggests. However, they also have the power to distract from transparent relationships where authentic face-to-face feedback is vital.
Endeavouring to boost overall performance, 360° Feedback is no doubt a billion-dollar industry.
But like any vitamin, we should be asking: 1. Is it necessary? 2. Does it work?
In this video, I challenge the blatant use of 360° instruments as a development tool. I'll get you to ponder on some of the inherent complications with 360s and provide 4 strategies, that are vital for providing development feedback and nurturing mutual trust and respect (with or without 360s).

John’s particular expertise is in strategy, where he works with CEOs, boards, senior executive teams and across organisations. John facilitates and engages leaders to stretch their views of the world, imagine possible business futures and design strategic responses.
In this interview John reveals some absolute leadership pearls through his philosophies on leadership, business and organisational culture. He discusses the power of collaboration and co-design, the dangers of entitlement, the balance we walk between humility and nobility, that great people need to be treated as volunteers not just employees, and many more leadership gems. The 2011 interview with Louise Baxter, CEO for Starlight Children's Foundation Australia is now available for streaming on Soundcloud.
In this interview you will hear Louise talk about: - Why leaders are the “guardians of the Vision” - Connecting (and reconnecting) everyone in the organisation to the Vision - The challenges of keeping the passion alive when faced with the realities of childhood illness - How you can help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families.
For seriously ill children and their families The Starlight Children’s Foundation is an absolute blessing. Over the past 20 years this incredible organisation has delivered a range of programmes designed to brighten the lives of sick kids, distracting them from the pain, loneliness and isolation that can come with illness and hospitalisation. With over 600,000 child admissions made to hospitals across Australia each year, Louise Baxter and her team have the challenging Vision of reaching each and every one of them to help brighten their lives – if only for a while (currently Starlight is only able to reach one in three children). Talk about an inspiring Vision!
