First of all, an apology from those of us here at New Jersey 101.5. We're a bit belated in getting you this podcast edition of Jim Gearhart's Jan. 23 Facebook Live show.

We were a little short-handed, and had an awfully busy week.

But as they say, what's old is new again, with the unusually warm weather we've seen over the last few days getting pushed aside -- Dan Zarrow tells us we might even see a little wintry mix.

So perhaps it's fitting that Jim Gearhart's partner in his weekly show, Bob Williams (who, like Jim, has been part of the New Jersey 101.5 family for nearly 30 years), told us on Jan. 23 ... just how cold it was.

Jim Gearhart has a lot of sympathy for parents worried about mandatory vaccines.

Protesting parents managed to get the state Senate to punt on a bill that would have removed religious exemptions to vaccine requirements for public school students -- a get-out-of-shots card legislative leaders say was being abused by people with no real religious objections, at the potential peril of herd immunity that protects us all against dangerous diseases.

Medical exemptions, for students with known health complications that prevent them from safely getting vaccines, would not have been affected by the bill.

"There is something that goes against the grain with the government forcing anything on us," Jim says in this week's episode of his weekly Facebook Live show and podcast.

If you've been on the Internet this week -- heck, if you've listened to the radio, turned on the TV or even left the house this week -- you've heard a lot about vaccines.

Protesting parents scored a major victory this week, convincing enough state senators not to support a bill that would have eliminated a religious exemption to the state's requirement all public school students be vaccinated. While Senate leaders say it's a necessary public health measure, upset parents say they want control over what goes in their children's bodies.

Jim Gearhart sees a lot of sides of that debate, but he worries about something else we're putting in our bodies, much more often than vaccines -- processed foods.

What's wrong with the term "illegal alien?" Jim Gearhart asks.

Enter the immigration debate fray, and you'll run into all sorts of variations on the term, and all sorts of alternatives to it. Some sound clinical, others border on pejorative. Illegal immigrant. Unauthorized immigrant. Undocumented alien. Illegals.

Since at least 2013, the Associated Press Stylebook -- basically, the grammar Bible for most news writers -- has frowned on just about all of those, even though it used to be fine with "illegal immigrant."

Jim asks: Why?

It's a story that caught a lot of attention last month -- Cherry Hill schools are having trouble getting parents to pay the tab for their kids' lunches, so they're giving simple, plain-Jane, no-frills tuna sandwiches to kids whose families' accounts are past due.

Call it lunch shaming, if you're so inclined. Parents are worried their kids will be stigmatized when they're seen with the sandwiches. A school board member says the district went with tuna because PB&J would be more appetizing.

But the district says it's a way to keep the kids fed even when their accounts are past due -- and that it's never enforced a policy that lets it hold lunch back entirely from a kid whose family is at least $20 behind.

Jim Gearhart was the loving pet parent to a pit bull -- but one day, it just snapped. So he's sympathetic to the plight of a woman charged after her pits killed another, leashed dog. But what are the lessons we can learn?

Jim Gearhart has long been known for his motto, GRIP -- Get Rid of Incumbent Politicians. But he's starting to think we need more severe action than that. If we want to control spending, end corruption, end self-interest ... maybe we should Get Rid of ALL Politicians.

They say to err is human, and to forgive is divine.

There's no doubt Craig Carton, long late of New Jersey 101.5 and more recently of WFAN, did the former. Last week, he began a federal 3 1/2 year prison sentence for a ticket-selling scam that blew up his career.

Jim Gearhart, longtime morning host and now podcast host for New Jersey 101.5, has made no secret of his disdain for Carton -- Jim says Carton spent years ripping him apart on the radio , even though the two had never met (their shows were hours apart). So as Carton finally faces justice ... can Jim forgive?

There's been a lot of talk this week about Jon Stewart's appearance before Congress, shaming members for skipping a hearing on a victims' compensation fund to help 9/11 first-responders.

Our own Bill Spadea thought it was grandstanding. Jeff Deminski thought it was anything but. But Jim Gearhart thought it was something extraordinary for entirely different reasons.

"There were several headlines that said Jon Stewart shames the Congress," Jim said in this week's LIVE podcast, available each week here as well as on Apple Podcasts and Google Play. "If you can shame te most shameless organization, the most shameful organization on the hemisphere, you have done something truly remarkable."

Jim's podcast is presented each week LIVE at Facebook.com/NJ1015, as Jim and Bob Williams take your questions and comments in the Facebook chat.

After taking a break for a few weeks, Jim Gearhart returns to New Jersey 101.5 -- along with Bob Williams, back as he continues his remarkable recovery from a kidney transplant. And for the first time, the two took their podcast recording LIVE to Facebook, answering your questions as they went.

It's a morning show reunion, and with primary elections coming up, Bob and Jim hit a familiar refrain -- Get Rid of Incumbent Politicians.

"Tax Freedom Day" is that time when, if you put all of your salary from Jan. 1 just to paying taxes, you'd finally be done for the year. It usually comes around mid-April. But big surprise -- for NJ, it takes longer than almost anywhere else.

It didn't have to be that way. Jim remembers the chances NJ missed to get taxes under control.

Jim Gearhart doesn't like to talk out of turn, but when it comes to Craig Carton, he'll make an exception.

Jim's never been shy about his disdain for former New Jersey 101.5 and WFAN host Carton, or held back about the way Carton used to make his life miserable when they were together at 101.5. But Jim says he's not the only one put off by Carton -- a certain high-profile individual would have been happy to beat him up in the station's parking lot.

Jim's aghast a guest speaker at a New Jersey school got in hot water for telling high school students that Adolf Hitler was a "good leader" -- even though the speaker was clear Hitler had "bad moral character and intentions."

After all, Jim says, it takes a great leader to turn a people as dignified and smart as the German populace was into a murderous mob -- and it's a lesson that just because someone's a great leader, it doesn't mean people should go where he's leading.

Murphy came in with a progressive agenda on everything from a $15 minimum wage to free tuition to legal marijuana. The reality? It's been a bit of a mixed bag for a governor who's hit more resistance from his fellow Democrats in the state legislature than he may have bargained for.

Jim's taking a stroll down memory lane, to what became a Christmas-season tradition on the New Jersey 101.5 morning show he helmed for a quarter-century.

It hearkens back to the early 1990s, back when few people at the station had computers. "We were not very computer-savvy," Jim says.

Sure, the staff knew the basics. They knew about basic peripherals, for instance.

"We knew you had the mouse, that you could click and all. I don't think we owned one," Jim says.

But when Jim got his hands on a directive from a major computer manufacturer ... well, we all got an education. Listen here to the one, the only, "Mouse Balls."

Jim Gearhart says, in principle, he could actually get on board with a lot of progressive priorities -- if he thought society was ready for them.

Take immigration. He recently read a comment from someone who suggested it's time we get past our territorial nature, and let people from other countries enjoy the privledges that come with access to America. But is that realistic?

"You know, the big loser in this election was this area of the media that is so far out left and constantly hammering away at Trump, and were trying to make this a referendum on Trump," Jim Gearhart says in the latest edition of the Jim Gearhart Show Podcast.

Jim Gearhart has heard the same criticisms you have -- that President Donald Trump's rhetoric is to blame for the violence we've seen over the last few weeks. That if not for his tone, perhaps there wouldn't have been bombs sent to Democratic leaders and a horrific synagogue shooting in Pittsbugth.

"Was Donald Trump resident at Columbine? ... What about the Connecticut school shooting? ... The South Carolina church shooting, where six unfortunate people were killed in a racial incident? Where was Trump then?"

That's just one of the topics Jim takes on for this week's Jim Gearhart Show podcast.
