This week, the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate is almost surely going to vote to acquit President Donald Trump, closing out his impeachment trial. The vote will down party lines or awfully close to it.

First of all, an apology from those of us here at New Jersey 101.5. We're a bit belated in getting you this podcast edition of Jim Gearhart's Jan. 23 Facebook Live show.
We were a little short-handed, and had an awfully busy week.
But as they say, what's old is new again, with the unusually warm weather we've seen over the last few days getting pushed aside -- Dan Zarrow tells us we might even see a little wintry mix.
So perhaps it's fitting that Jim Gearhart's partner in his weekly show, Bob Williams (who, like Jim, has been part of the New Jersey 101.5 family for nearly 30 years), told us on Jan. 23 ... just how cold it was.

Jim Gearhart has a lot of sympathy for parents worried about mandatory vaccines.
Protesting parents managed to get the state Senate to punt on a bill that would have removed religious exemptions to vaccine requirements for public school students -- a get-out-of-shots card legislative leaders say was being abused by people with no real religious objections, at the potential peril of herd immunity that protects us all against dangerous diseases.
Medical exemptions, for students with known health complications that prevent them from safely getting vaccines, would not have been affected by the bill.
"There is something that goes against the grain with the government forcing anything on us," Jim says in this week's episode of his weekly Facebook Live show and podcast.

If you've been on the Internet this week -- heck, if you've listened to the radio, turned on the TV or even left the house this week -- you've heard a lot about vaccines.
Protesting parents scored a major victory this week, convincing enough state senators not to support a bill that would have eliminated a religious exemption to the state's requirement all public school students be vaccinated. While Senate leaders say it's a necessary public health measure, upset parents say they want control over what goes in their children's bodies.
Jim Gearhart sees a lot of sides of that debate, but he worries about something else we're putting in our bodies, much more often than vaccines -- processed foods.

If there's one thing that offends Jim Gearhart, it's how easily some people get offended.
The Jersey City Board of Education is operating in the wake of two scandals. In one, its president has been accused of corruption by state officials. And in another, board member Joan Terrell-Paige has been roundly criticized for a Facebook group in which she referred to some religious Jews moving into the community as "brutes."

The horror of this month's news in Jersey City was bad enough.
Mindy Ferencz, 31, Douglas Miguel Rodriguez, 49 and Moshe Deutsch, 24 died inside the JC Kosher Supermarket when two shooters got out of a van and opened fire with rifles on the store on Martin Luther King Drive earlier this month. Jersey City police detective Joseph Seals was gunned down in a cemetery by the same shooters shortly before, authorities say.
There's so much we still don't know. But what's unmistakable: The sheer tragedy is overwhelming.
And yet scammers with fake charities have made it worse.

Chick-fil-A -- the Christian-owned fast food chain -- took another step away from its controversial associations with religious and anti-LGBT values this month.
And Jim Gearhart says he seeing the chain "throwing in the town was rather disappointing."

"Everybody's looking for a legacy," Jim Gearhart says during his weekly Facebook Live show, which happens every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. "I don't know that this (administration) will have one. It'll be kind of like the Corzine administration. Nobody remembers it."
Is Gov. Murphy set to disappear into history?
Jim Gearhart has long said conservatives make good points, and liberals make good points -- and that he's happy to hear both out on any issue. But the far-leftist, the radical left, the progressives ... whatever you might call them ... they go too far, Jim says.
Usually.
But as Jim looks at the extraordinary, inconsistent and often shocking price of health care-- well, the longtime New Jersey 101.5 personality starts to lean in their direction.

What's wrong with the term "illegal alien?" Jim Gearhart asks.
Enter the immigration debate fray, and you'll run into all sorts of variations on the term, and all sorts of alternatives to it. Some sound clinical, others border on pejorative. Illegal immigrant. Unauthorized immigrant. Undocumented alien. Illegals.
Since at least 2013, the Associated Press Stylebook -- basically, the grammar Bible for most news writers -- has frowned on just about all of those, even though it used to be fine with "illegal immigrant."

Jim's been worried for a while about what he says is the too-left slant of the Democratic party -- liberals have something to contribute, he says, but Jim argues progressives take things too far. And Jim says he, himself, was a Democrat "back when it was a legitimate party."
That didn't sit right with one New Jerseyan who tuned into the Facebook Live presentation.

You've heard of fat-shaming.
You've probably heard of slut-shaming. Of race-shaming. Even of lunch-shaming.

It's a story that caught a lot of attention last month -- Cherry Hill schools are having trouble getting parents to pay the tab for their kids' lunches, so they're giving simple, plain-Jane, no-frills tuna sandwiches to kids whose families' accounts are past due.
Call it lunch shaming, if you're so inclined. Parents are worried their kids will be stigmatized when they're seen with the sandwiches. A school board member says the district went with tuna because PB&J would be more appetizing.

Jim's aghast a guest speaker at a New Jersey school got in hot water for telling high school students that Adolf Hitler was a "good leader" -- even though the speaker was clear Hitler had "bad moral character and intentions."

Jim's taking a stroll down memory lane, to what became a Christmas-season tradition on the New Jersey 101.5 morning show he helmed for a quarter-century.
It hearkens back to the early 1990s, back when few people at the station had computers. "We were not very computer-savvy," Jim says.
Sure, the staff knew the basics. They knew about basic peripherals, for instance.
"We knew you had the mouse, that you could click and all. I don't think we owned one," Jim says.

"You know, the big loser in this election was this area of the media that is so far out left and constantly hammering away at Trump, and were trying to make this a referendum on Trump," Jim Gearhart says in the latest edition of the Jim Gearhart Show Podcast.
