Matt Purcell interviews USA political celebrity Dave Rubin during Jordan Petersons tour in Australia.DAVE RUBINhttps://daverubin.com/Dave’s journey from a left leaning progressive to a free thinking classical liberal has been quite an adventure. As a gay married man living in America, Dave spent the majority of his adult life subscribing to a certain political belief system based primarily on his immutable characteristics. Fed up with the mainstream media narrative and click-bait news, Dave decided to open up about his awakening, for all to see. He came to realize that no person or idea should be expected to join a side, but rather they should embrace their status as an individual. He now feels that the modern left has lost its way by taking political correctness and groupthink to a dangerous level, distracting from the true American dream of the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness.Dave’s background as a stand up comedian, degree in political science, and willingness to listen without fighting has uniquely positioned him to tackle big ideas and uncomfortable truths with thought leaders from both sides of the aisle. His show The Rubin Report aims to create civil discourse with people we both agree and disagree with, and host a dialogue with others whose ideas are judged before being given the chance to be presented in an honest way.Dave is currently taping season 5 of his talk show, speaking around the world with Dr. Jordan Peterson on the “12 Rules for Life Tour,” and performing stand up comedy in cities around the U.S.

Matt Purcell spoke with Australian music artist Dami Im on The Examined Life Podcast which they discussed her music, story and beliefs.

About Dami
In 2013 Dami Im arrived, seemingly out of nowhere, and found herself a home in the sonic heart of Australia. Born in South Korea, Dami won The X Factor on the strength of her astonishing voice and palpable sense of artistry. More success followed as Dami earned multiple ARIA accreditations, including #1 chart positions and multi-platinum sales for the likes of her self-titled debut album and hit singles 'Alive', 'Super Love' and 'Gladiator'. For any one tuning into The X Factor it was obvious that Dami was not only an artist of the new millennium, but she possessed a devout understanding of the rich history of pop and how truly great songs are crafted.
Since then, Dami released two more acclaimed studio albums, including the Gold accredited 2014 release, CLASSIC CARPENTERS, which peaked at #3 on the ARIA album charts and gave rise to a sold out national tour. Dami then travelled to Sweden to represent Australia at The Eurovision Song Contest 2016—where she placed second in the world performing in front of an audience of 200 million with her power ballad & international smash, 'Sound of Silence'.
The beginning of 2018, saw Dami release her fourth studio album, I HEAR A SONG via Sony Music Entertainment Australia. I HEAR A SONG sees Im breathe new life into jazz classics while also weaving pared-back pop hits around two stunning new original songs, all beautifully recorded in Nashville. The impressive collection of songs from the most iconic and ground-breaking women of music include album opener, 'Feeling Good' famously performed by Nina Simone, Beyoncé's 'Love On Top' and the first instant grat track, the emotionally charged, 'Autumn Leaves'.
When asked about the track listing, Dami comments, "Before you listen to the album it might look like an unusual combination of songs but I recorded every tune with the same desire, which was to share the stories of these amazing women, the most raw and simple way, through a microphone and my fingers on the black and white keys."
Breaking with the modern multitrack style of recording, where each instrument and vocal layer is recorded in isolation, Im and producer Rick Price fittingly returned to more old school methods. Every track you hear was recorded with Im playing the piano or the Wurlitzer live as she sang. "Even though doing it together is more imperfect, it sounded better left organic and raw rather than trying to have that perfect, polished sound," she says. Among the musicians on the album is double bassist Dennis Crouch (Johnny Cash, Elton John, Diana Krall), virtuoso harpist Kirsten Agresta Copely (Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Beyoncé), string arranger and viola player Kristin Wilkinson (Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks, Dolly Parton), and members of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Dami returned to the stage in April & May performing tracks from I HEAR A SONG in an up-close and personal environment along the east coast. Due to the success, Dami will be back performing three regional performances across Australia. Starting on the 3rd of November at Gladstone Entertainment Centre, 23rd of November in Coffs Harbour and 24th November at Wests New Lambton, Newcastle.

We have an authentic discussion about Oshers new book "Back After The Break" which dives heavily into his battle with mental illness. Our conversion is real and honest and we cover lots of topics including mental illness, anxiety, depression, our wives, life's purpose and much more.
Osher Gunsburg Bio:
It's hard to remember a time when Osher Gunsberg (or Andrew G as he was then) wasn't on TV - he's just always been there, looking at ease in the spotlight, beaming a big smile, with a questionable haircut. He was there hanging out with The Offspring backstage at the Warped Tour on Channel V; announcing to a national audience of three million people that Guy Sebastian was our first Australian Idol; and later capturing the heart of the nation by hosting every season of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and now Bachelor in Paradise.
But while everything looks great from the outside, the real picture has not always been quite so rosy. Osher has always known he's different to most other people. Struggling with anxiety, panic attacks and weight issues since he was young, he tried for years to drink away the anxiety and depression. He ended up unemployed, divorced, suicidal and certifiable on the other side of the world, yet somehow he managed to put the broken pieces of his mind back together and make a life for himself again. He lives with a mental illness - and he's come to terms with it to live an authentic, rich and fulfilling life.

In this last episode of 2017, we discuss how sometime's people can remind us of the bad choices we made.
Thanks so much for listening to our podcast this year!
Everybody has a story. Year 7 students open up about some of their stories and problems they have faced so far.
In this episode we talk to year 7 students about if they have witnessed and participated in taking drugs. Students open up about when and how they first got them and we hear their views on the subject.
Year 7 students arguably face a challenging year from transitioning from primary school to high school. We talk to year 7 about mental health, how they have felt going into high school and the challenges they have faced.
Matt and Ben challenged year 9 to think outside the box. Did you know you could start a business in school as a student? What opportunities are around you in a big high school that you could capitalise on?
What would our actions look like if we didn't care what anyone thought of us? The answers may suprise you.
We've heard somewhere in our lives "you become who you hang around". Is that the case? What effects do friends have on us if we know that we cannot control what people say, do or think?
Matt and guest little brother Ben talk to some year 9 students about their experiences.
The boys claimed that there isn't a helpful careers focused class that gives them tools to figure out what to do for a career. Matt teaches on the GPV framework.
In light of the terrible attacks in Manchester and London, Year 10 came into this session with questions: is religion behind terrorism? What drives people to do these acts of violence? Should we be careful of everybody who holds a certain belief?
Don't miss out on this important episode.
In this episode we talk to some year 10 boys about harsh jokes and banter and how to defend yourself and others when things go to far.
Part 2! We speak to some year 8 male students about teenage relationships. Why should students date if they are so young? What do girls and guys base their relationship on? What is a good relationship?
We speak to some year 8 male students about teenage relationships. Why should students date if they are so young? What do girls and guys base their relationship on? What is a good relationship?
As we wrap up both a term at school and our first full year of Code of Kings, Matt debriefs a little and gives some advice on how to end your year positively and productively and get a head start on some of next year's goals.
Last week we asked you folks to send in some questions for the students and here are their responses. Do they think they're a good or bad influence on people around them? What are their worst habits? What's something new they want to achieve? What would they change about school? Tune in for these and more!
Last week we talked about goals, so this week Matt & Michael have a little chat about how they decide what goals to pursue, what led them to the points they're at now, and why some of our goals get left behind.
We all have goals, whether we realise it or not. What makes some of them work and others fail miserably? Believe it or not, there are actually ways to craft your goals so they're easier to achieve and more likely to get done. Matt & Michael talk the students through some of these tricks and learn that none of them can say the word 'specific'.
Matt & Michael sit down on a sweltering weekday afternoon to touch on some of the things that came up while talking to Year 8 boys about peer pressure.
Welcome back everyone! It's Matt, Michael & a fresh batch of Year 8 boys running through the gist of the podcast and then talking about pressure. What do we feel pressured to do at school and around our friends? Do we dress and act to please other people? What does it take to be cool? We get down to the core of all that & more. Thanks for listening!
Ian & Michael talk to the students about what they appreciate about their teachers & school, and what they find more challenging. We hear examples of good ways teachers can solve problems and what part of the school experience is most fun. This is our last live school session for the term so thanks to the students for their openness and honesty!
Finally, the students defeat the masters... Well not quite, but they do ask Matt & Michael some questions about their adult lives. But that doesn't mean they're safe! M&M have some questions of their own. It's everything you've ever wanted to know about the other generation! (Ok, about 20 minutes worth.)
What is your identity, and how did you get it? Did it come about naturally or was it given to you by other people? Are they right about you? The boys talk to Matt and Michael about identity, social groups, and times they were told discouraging things about themselves.
In between school sessions, Matt & Michael follow up on some of the job discussions from episode 11 by looking at the job market, how it changes and how we can adapt to it. Michael challenges people not to attach their emotional wellbeing to an unstable job market and does a great joke about the Terminator working at McDonalds. If you have any thoughts on the topic, please share them in comments or message us on facebook!
How do our expectations determine our choices? What about other peoples' expectations of us? Can high expectations lead to disappointment? Are we more likely to make bad decisions if people expect us to? A challenging episode where we cover topics like drugs, peer pressure and the zombie apocalypse.
Matt & Michael discuss jobs, bad jobs, dream jobs, and how to know what it is you want to do with your life. When will you know? Can you change your mind? Will it be easy? We talk about how the things we enjoy doing now can influence what jobs are a good match for us.
This week we finish Matt's leadership masterclass with a live question and answer sessions LIVE from Port Macquarie Luminosity Youth Summit
This week's podcast is a real treat, a free leadership masterclass from Matt, recorded live at the session. Tune in next week for the second half!
With a new term and a new group of students, this time all from year 9, let's get cracking by talking about family. What different relationships to people have with their parents, and parents with each other? How much trust is there between us and our parents, and how much communication? How can we better understand and get along with each other?
Honesty. We know it's good, but why is it sometimes so hard? In this live school session we all own up to a few lies we've told, and try to figure out why we told them. Did we get caught? Did we come clean? What makes us want to stretch the truth and misrepresent ourselves in certain ways, particularly as boys?
Matt's back at school leading a discussion on respect, all the while trying to maintain it himself. The boys have a few ideas about what respect means, where it comes from, who deserves it and if they have any. And there is a reckoning for those who chose to bring their ipads to the recording....
For the first time, all three hosts on one podcast! Matt, Ian and Michael talk to the boys about our friendships and how we choose the people in our lives. Would you trust your friends to take over your life or lead your country? What are friends worth and what should we expect of them?
Hosts Matt & Michael talk about the depression Michael wrestled with after high school. Where did it come from? What was it like!? How can it be helped!?!? Tune in for some firsthand insight on this tricky topic. As always feel free to message either of us through the Code of Kings facebook if you need to talk about this or any other issue.
Matt & Michael talk to some students about authority. Who has authority and why? Should we respect it? Can it be used poorly? What about rules and laws - what good are they? Do we have authority?
This week we talk to Casey who tells us what it's like for family of someone lost to suicide. The challenges, the questions you ask yourself, and how hard it is to see coming. We also touch on drugs & lifestyles that make it more difficult, and how to check up on someone we think might not be doing well.
Welcome to Season Two of The Code of Kings! This season we'll be expanding - adding new team members, some of whom you'll meet this episode, and branching out into schools and new topics. But let's get back into the swing of things by talking about how people do and don't deal with things going on in their lives and at school. We'll be looking at rudeness, misbehaviour, and bullying - and not just from Matt!
We're taking a bit of a Christmas break at the Code of Kings, so let's debrief on the podcast so far after a mentoring testimonial. Thanks for listening folks, and make sure to share the podcast with others you think would be interested. Happy holidays!
Matt and Ben discuss their experiences with adoption - when they found out they were adopted, what it was like growing up Asian in a white family, and finding out their biological family history.
In the latest podcast in our one-on-one series, we talk to Code of Kings regular Sam about family and how his parents' divorce shaped his early years. He also talks to us about values, success and what kinds of people he likes to be around.
In this snappy lil' episode we spend some one-on-one time getting to know Code of Kings regular Cameron. He talks us through what his younger life was like, nerds, friend groups, and being obsessed with things. He also lets us know the one text message he would send out to the world. Well, the two.
This week we meet Ben, a student and friend who tells us of life with Asperger's, a syndrome on the autism spectrum. We find out how he processes and reacts to things differently, how the people around him respond to the news, and what unique opportunities and perspectives it allows. Then, in an action packed finale, Ben shares his own version of The Karate Kid.
This week we have a big talk about self image, and our habit of not liking ourselves. Is self criticism good and do we take it too far? How can we be sure of our positive traits without being cocky? Do other people focus on our flaws as much as we do? Why is it easier to be self critical than to have pride in ourselves?
Matt and his friend Ian talk to the boys about the power of words and communication - how to keep a level head in an argument, what it means to use certain insults, and how better to express ourselves without bringing the level of conversation down.
As a bonus, you will learn some new words to call your friends when you get frustrated with them... "chicken kicker" is my favourite.
Musician and Thirsty Merc frontman Rai Thistlethwayte joins Matt today for a special one-on-one interview about his experience as a creative person navigating the songwriting process and the music industry. He imparts advice on honing your craft and shares some of his stories of the journey from a music fan to an Aria nominated musician.
This week's episode is a fun one! The boys open up on some pretty honest and real topics on #relationships ❤
This is one of the most honest and perhaps controversial discussions yet. We speak to a year 11 student who formerly took drugs in school about why he did it, why his mates and peers do it and the dangers of using. You won't hear many discussions like this.
In this episode, Isaac and Matt have a one-on-one conversation about confidence and its different types. What is the hierarchy in school and friend groups? How much does the way we look affect our confidence? What can we do when our confidence is shattered?
Confidence: It can be hard to build up, and easy to lose. How do the gang make confidence work for them, and what are the obstacles that arise when you're trying to develop a healthy self image? And how much is the advice of others worth?
Matt and the boys discuss stress - the many sources of it in modern life and how we can choose to approach it. They touch on study, bullying, social relations, and how to maintain a level of self preservation without putting up too many walls.
