The App State Marshall rivalry has been dormant for decades but you can feel it ready to explode onto the scene again. If this rivalry was active during he internet age every App fan would be well aware.
Fortunately this week we have App State OC/QB Coach Tony Petersen joining us to discuss this rivalry. Coach Petersen played at Marshall in the late 80s and coached the Thundering Herd in the 90s and early 2010s. The second Thursday night nationally televised game in Boone in two weeks. Who saw that coming 5 years ago?!As important as the Georgia Southern showdown was just 2 weeks ago, this game is bigger. Are we bitter rivals with Arkansas State? No. Not right now. Have the these programs spent more than 2 decades putting together classic, down to the wire games? Nope. Not yet.But this game has all the makings of a classic. Arkansas State got a rude awakening from a white hot App State squad last season and they haven’t forgotten. Just like Troy, the Red Wolves of Arkansas State are out for blood.Before the season, some had this game pegged as the Sun Belt championship game. Last year, the Mountaineers had their coming out party down in Troy. It was a lopsided victory and didn't make Troy look like the prominent FCS and FBS football program they've been in the past two decades. Troy tried their best to return the favor on Halloween in 2015. What was supposed to be a cakewalk, multi-possession game turned into a Triple OT thriller at The Rock.But the Mountaineers did what championship teams are supposed to do: Find a way to win even when you're not playing your best and the opposition keeps punching you in the mouth.Was it closer than we would've liked? It would have been tempting for Scott Satterfield and the Mountaineers to overlook the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks (ULM) on Saturday. After all, they have a poor record and Georgia Southern will be knocking on our front door a mere 5 days afterwards for a Thursday night showdown on national TV that will help shape the Sun Belt championship race.Luckily for us, the Mountaineer faithful, App State fought off a shaky start and delivered a crushing blow to the Warhawks. And "crushing" is putting it nicely.After a 24-14 halftime score, the Mountaineers went on to completely shut down the ULM attack and rack up 59 points and 650+ yards when it was all said and done.
