The Maryland Food Bank is one of the biggest, and oldest, food banks in America. It distributes 48 million pounds of food every year, and deliver over a hundred thousand meals every single day. But the Maryland Food Bank believes the way to end hunger is NOT just with food.
Ania Pettigrew: I love pasta. It's a big problem, (laughs) but I love it.
HM: As a litle girl Ania (Ah-nee-ah) Pettigrew loved watching her great grandmother cook, She made big meals for the family and baked for their local church. But growing up, Ania's family also knew hard times, and what is was like to be hungry .
AP: I've been in that situation, so I know that it's really hard. Food. No t being able to give that to yourself or to your children. It's heartbreaking. think about how much you personally waste. How much we take for granted. we see so much on a plate that gets wasted, me personally thats a big pet peeve for me when I see people scrape their plates into the trash.
HM: Now, Ania is dedicated to making a better life for her family. She's enrolled in Food Works, a cooking program at the Maryland Food bank. They teach low-income students how to prepare food professionally and then helps them get jobs. what makes Food Works even more compelling, is students learn to cook with 95% donated food. and Executive Director Tim regan says they get A LOT of donated food coming through their doors.
TR: We get 25 to 30 thousand pounds of chicken a week. From one source.
HM: Normally a food bank would struggle to distribute that much raw chicken, and a lot of it would need to be thrown away, but Foodworks takes that chicken and teaches low-income students how to prepare it, cook it and get it to people who need it - taking pressure off food banks, waste management systems, and landfills. JB: I can eat breakfast all day anyday
and says his class is already like family.
JB: I definitely think I've grown a little, because I've learned about helping different people in their walks of life, homeless people, elderly people, young kids. I've just grown a little. It's a great program and I think everyone can come and just get something from it because honestly it's like really life changing program.
HM: Graduates recieve culinary certification from the Community College of Baltimore County, and manager-level food safety certification, which allows them to start jobs at a higher wage.
TR: We've got students all over the culinary industry in central Maryland. We've got them at very high end restaurants and in public schools. We really try to place our graduates based on their strength and based on their interests. we had one employer recently who wanted to hire a whole class (laughs) you know 20 people. we've been really blessed by how well we've been able to place students to date.
HM: rather than just providing meals, Foodworks believes by training students and getting them jobs, they're taking control of all their meals of come. case in point - After graduation, Ania Pettigrew hopes to open her soul food restaurant.
AP: Soul food is traditionally very fattening, very high and cholesterol, a lot of bad things for your body. So when I do what I'm going to do, I want to make sure that it's more healthy. to be able to do that is something major and a huge blessing.

Over 3 million people are victims of domestic abuse in the USA and 25% of those people say the reason they stay or return to their abusers is out of fear for what will happen to their pets if they leave. Abusers often threaten pets in order to get caregivers to stay. Only 3% of domestic Abuse Shelters currently allow animals, a number that must grow, as we seek to help victims out of abusive relationships and our concept of family expands to include four-legged children.
Urban Resources Institute runs shelters for victims of Domestic Abuse all over New York City. They were the first shelter to allow pets into their shelters, so victims wouldn't have to leave them behind.

Nineteen year old Deshawn Henry is a student at the University of Buffalo and he, along with the help of his professor Dr. James Jensen, has developed a new water purification device that requires no chemicals or electricity. The “Water Lens” uses only the power of the sun, but can kill 99.9% of all bacteria and pathogens found in polluted water and may be a powerful new tool for fighting disease in developing regions around the world. On May 3rd, 2016 a wildfire raced suddenly towards the town of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. Residents have mere minutes to flee the city before it burned down, and many of them escaped with only the clothes on their backs. Worse, there was only one road out of town, Hwy 63 and the nearest town was 4 hours away. The few gas stations nearby ran out of gas or went up in flames, stranding many evacuees by the side of the road. As emergency services worked frantically to control the fire before it consumed the city, residents were left alone to find a way south. Enter the heroes of the day The Western Canadian Powerstrokes, a Facebook page of Ford Motor enthusiasts with over 3,500 members. When word got out that hundreds of people, families, women and children were stranded helpless by the side of the road, the WCP quickly organized a fleet of civilian trucks to deliever gas water and supplies not only the evacuees, but to fire trucks and emergency services as well. Listen to how an informal group of "Big Hearted Truckers" stepped in, stepped up and saved the day. 90,000 people were evacuated in mere hours, without one fatality. More at www.abeautiful.world

Prince died today. I got a call at noon to get into the studio quick - they wanted me on-air. I was Prince's set decorator in the 90's. He called me 'girl chick.' and built countless sets for him at Paisley Park. He had me decorate the inside of his limos and every greenroom at every venue he played. There was a LOT of purple chiffon, purple velour and purple velvet. There was a lot of everything weird kinky and bizarre too, including things that required me to sign nondisclosure agreements. There were the marathon shoots, the secret vault, the time he bought an ice cream truck... Here I talk live on air with Tom Weber and a host of fans, friends and crew calling in to share their memories. I Hope we can do the His Purple Majesty justice.

Once upon a time, there was a little barber shop in Downtown Dubuque, Iowa called the Spark Family Hair Salon. It’s a friendly and cozy place, even though it’s located on a not-so-great street, in an economically-challenged neighborhood, nestled right between a gun store and a pawn shop.
Inside the little salon is a barber named Courtney D. Holmes, a forty-five year old man with horn-rimmed glasses, an easy smile and wide shoulders, who gives free haircuts to underprivileged kids, in exchange for them reading out loud to him. “I’ve got two sons of my own.” he says. “I just want to help kids start reading.”

Heather McElhatton interviews the lead engineer of NASAs Dawn space probe, which is set to make discoveries on Ceres and Vesta, which are are the two most massive residents of the asteroid belt. Vesta is a rocky body, while Ceres is believed to contain large quantities of ice. The profound differences in geology between these two protoplanets that formed and evolved so close to each other form a bridge from the rocky bodies of the inner solar system to the icy bodies, all of which lay beyond in the outer solar system.
At present, most of what we now know about Vesta and Ceres comes from ground-based and Earth-orbiting telescopes like NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The telescopes pick up sunlight reflected from the surface in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared, and by emitted radiation in the far-infrared and microwave regions.
