As we mourn the loss of our great friend and Texas Music Pioneer DJ Michael 5000 Watts of the Swisha House, KAZI 88.7 FM in Austin allowed us the chance to take 3 hours of radio to do a tribute to the man, the myth, the legend. Thank you so much to Eva The Analog Diva and H+ for making it happen and thank you to Austin legendary MC and DJ Smackola for coming down and helping to make this show what it became. We all love Michael Watts and will work to keep his name alive forever. Thank you to Bun B, Skratch Bastid, Pepper, DJ Grip, Magno, James Dean and Shaunie Haynes for calling in. Another big one for the record books! This should have happened a long time ago! I finally got my brother Doug Mecca up in the studio for some real talk. Doug is a pioneer in Austin hip hop and beyond. He and his Hip Hop Mecca Crew revolutionized the game back in the 90's when they started promoting hip hop shows on the regular with both national and local artists at a time when it was even harder to get stages for hip hop than it was in the 2000's. Austin has come a long way and Hip Hop Mecca and their work played a huge role in legitimizing hip hop within the Austin music scene. Trust, it was a lot of work. They also booked some of the coolest hip hop showcases at SXSW in the late 90's/early 2000's. They are the crew who brought crews like the Living Legends, Hieroglyphics, Rhymesayers, Project Blowed and way more to Austin and to SXSW. Their events were always fun and also always loaded with local artists. They built a ton of bridges and Doug has tons of stories. Word to Mike Henry (who also needs to come on the pod).Born in New York, he came to South Austin in the 3rd Grade and has seen it all. I know that I say this all the time but THIS IS A BIG ONE! I've been down with Robert Gabriel, nee, R2G2, since the mid-90's when we were both writing for the Bay Area hip hop magazine 4080. The publisher Lauchlan Eugene Sampson McIntyre told Robert and I that we should meet each other as we were both in Austin at the time. So we did and we became friends for all these years. He has always been super supportive and in my corner and I have always loved learning about hip hop from his perspective as well. He has really studied the things that he loves, Austin and The Good Life era hip hop in LA in particular. But he of course is not limited to that. We talk all sorts of things from our history and travels and life etc. And I bust out one of his early tapes he made for me and others that I have on my shelf to this day. He was actually my "Promotions and Publicity" teacher back in the days and from right when we met we hit it off and became family. I don't him or his lovely wife and sons nearly enough so I was real lucky to have a couple extra days in Houston recently where we were able to spend some time and really catch up.And you know I had to get him on the podcast. On this one we talk about his days running a Christian record label and being in Christian bands to his life now and most all things in between. MC K PEOPLE CALL HIM KWAM! My brother Kwame Anderson joins us for today's edition of Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala. Our history runs way back to the early 90's and the days of the Hip Hop Coffee Shop at Hoi Polloi on White Oak which is now Onion Creek and also to the days of Strictly Hip Hop Sunday's on KPFT when he was with a very forward thinking rap group called Seeds of Soul. I was a huge fan of theirs and felt like they were really ahead of their time.I used to hang out with Seeds of Soul and um, enhance our minds and listen to bands like Sonic Youth and Jesus Lizard and Kwame really got into experimental music on all levels real heavy. When Seeds of Soul ended, he and DJ Spaceghost started a group called Freedom Sold, which was Kwame on vocals and noisy ass guitar and Spaceghost on the beats and turntables and they really took things to a whole nother level. Talk about being ahead of their time, Freedom Sold was making noisy conscious raps before really anyone. Now everyone is noisy, though maybe not so conscious. (Word to B L A C K I E who is also a leader in this realm).Anyway now Kwame is a teacher and he has no shortage of things to say. We talk a lot about our history and friendship and travels and hip hop in Houston and all sorts of things. She is always in the place and forever repping for the scene that she loves (and loves her) so much.For years Audrea has been witnessing and covering the happenings around Austin. We cover a lot of ground on this one including but not limited to her work getting Austin's CapMetro transit system to expand their services for the disabled, her writing for the Texas Observer and her plans for her book that she has been working on about, take a guess, yup, Austin hip-hop.She also promises to start her own podcast like, very soon. We continue on with the stories of kids in the van traversing the country with my other brother Pete Stadtmueller. Pete played drums in the first band I ever booked, Lost from Erie, PA and has always been a great friend of mine. He is a teacher on the university level now and is also a deep sea diver but in our youth he was just another miscreant punk rocker on a mission. We all were.Honestly Pete was one of the more stable dudes in the crew, he could be trusted to drive us through the night blasting Fugazi and Ice Cube tapes at equal volume as the van backfired through tunnels and on country roads. He won't get the band back together but we won't hold that against him. We share a lot of musical memories on this one for sure. Continuing on in Erie, PA today we present one of my oldest and closest friends, Mike Krusewicz. When I first met Mike he was a crazy, mouthy skater type who did not hold his tongue at all (nothing's changed). I remember being taken aback the first time I met him, like "Who is this dude?" Then we got some beers and became best friends.Mike is the one who pushed me to do many things, with him having my back we were unstoppable in our youth. We also criss crossed the US together on those early punk rock tours. Mike has always had a van, and iykyk having a van can lead to some crazy times. I have always admired Mike as he started his own business straight out of high school and never looked back and always kept it real. He is my brother in this world for real.We started in radio together, booking shows together and touring the US as well. Word to Rich Mudge too. SEASON 3 BONUS WEEK HAS BEGUN! Well three days at least. Today starts the ERIE EDITION of Talk So Real. I spent a good part of the summer in my hometown of Erie, PA and meant to do way more podcasts, but I did get with three of the people who were HUGE in the formation of who I am today. These are LITERALLY my day one dudes (Day one starts after I got out of high school because school was a TRAP) and in those daze right after High School man, I accomplished A LOT with this particular dude.Brian Diplacido aka A Bullet for Fidel was the singer for the first band I ever booked a tour for, Lost from Erie, PA. I will never forget the first time I saw them live at the Continental Ballroom in 1989 on a local bill with My 3 Scum and Backwash (Alex Lewinger from Submachine's old band also RIP Danny Perry). Lost was way more my speed than a lot of things happening those days. I love pure punk rock and the old school and all that but in my late teens I was way more Touch & Go/Amphetamine Reptile/Sub Pop than I was like, for lack of a better term, pure punk. Actually I'm tripping I liked everything but let's just say seeing a band like them hitting like that coming out of Erie (nee, Harborcreek) was huge for me. (And they were really not like T&G, AmRep, etc I don't know what I am saying. As the kids say today, they hit different).I approached them after the show and probably bought a tape and a shirt and if memory serves me right I ran into the drummer Pete at Record Country and we talked and all became friends. It was at that show that I decided that I wanted to try my hand at throwing shows, and on these Erie podcasts we talk about how all that went down.I toured the US multiple times with Lost, sometimes for six weeks at a time, and then in 1991 Brian and I backpacked around Europe for the first time which changed my life in a major way as well. So much to talk about.Later in life Brian became a solo songwriter called A Bullet For Fidel and released records on the excellent label SCAT RECORDS. And in 2023 he has some new music about fin to drop! Also on Scat Records. Man the way life moves is really crazy man for real for real. Here we are 30 years later still doing thangs and having some real talks!

I've BEEN meaning to sit down with the legend OG Ron C and chop (no pun intended) it up about all sorts of things, and on this episode it finally happened with a bonus appearance by DJ Hollygrove. We talk about the beginnings of the Swisha House, The Chopstars and how they have evolved over the years. We discuss how both of us started out driving the promo van for a radio station in Houston, and later get into Ron's new career as a filmmaker/actor.It was great to see The Chopstars all around #SXSW2023, they definitely held it down all over the city. I even got a literal candle from @DJCandlestick. Crazy! Special shout out to my brother Gregory "Beef" Jones (@ogbeefjones) for inviting me to the Group Black party during SXSW IA last week. Group Black is a company founded by industry legend Bonin Bough to dramatically transform the face of media ownership and investment. Beef and I had been trying to link all day, when he ended up at this party and told my wife and I to come meet him there. He said "They have free drinks, a DJ and some Afrobeats artist will perform." Neither of us knew who we were about to see.Then Yung D3mz hit the stage, straight outta Ghana. It was so refreshing for me to hear this kind of music being represented at SXSW and by a young up and coming talent who has not jumped on the hype train as of yet. I truly felt as if I was witnessing something special. Possibly his first show in the USA, and for a crowd of highly enthusiastic - mostly women - who were dancing and singing along. It was a really special moment for me as ten years ago when I worked for SXSW I took a couple trips to Johannesburg to meet more people from the African music industry and hopefully see SXSW expand into booking more from the continent. That is all easier said than done but in recent years Africa's presence at the conference has grown for sure. So props to SXSW for that.I approached Yung D3mz and talked to him about his music and told him that I was a fan of Fokn Boiz from Ghana and knew their manager, Panji Anoff, and from there he could tell that I knew a little something about this music thing. I met his manager and his crew and invited them to come over and do a podcast, and they actually showed up and this talk is the result. It was a real pleasure to get this young persons perspective on Afrobeats and just life and culture in general. His music can be streamed anywhere you stream music and you should check him out. Maaaaaan I am finally getting back to the podcast game and this one is a good one! I finally got to sit down with Shu of IITight Music (2 Tight) from Japan! Shu is a huge supporter of real rap music and one of the truest fans I have ever met. I love meeting people from around the world who appreciate and work to help and progress our culture and Shu is very much so one of them. Listen to the story of how he has been coming to the US multiple times every year for 20 years to buy music to take back and distribute in Japan, mainly independent real rap music. He goes from hood to hood in search of gems on CD, cassette, vinyl etc and he even licenses music from underground artists. I even have a vinyl copy of a Southern Merchandise album he put out. Southern Merchandise were a group in San Antonio in the 90's and here in Austin I felt like I was the only person who knew of them. I loved that CD and somehow this dude found them and reissued it on vinyl. Crazy! Tune in for some real game and maybe you have something to offer him in the way of unreleased music to release in Japan, or some old cassettes you have in a closet. My guest this week is Kevin Curtin, and since you asked, we talk in depth about Ye's appearance on Infowars and what all this means to a couple of punks out here in Austin, Texas. Kevin has some incredible stories of how he got to Austin and landed a job with the Austin Chronicle. You may have heard some of it before, but you definitely don't know the whole story. It cray.We also discuss being a lab rat for money (that was/is a big thing in this town), 6th Street VS the rest of Austin, life on the road and how travel opens your eyes and minds to so many different things, the creative process, and then we talk a lot of dad talk. Keith Corona is a South Austin hip hop legend. A leader in all that he does, Keith has been on the cutting edge of the visuals game for as long as I can remember. You have got to check out his YouTube page where you will find all sorts of dope music videos, many of which were filmed in Mexico where he resides for part of every year. He is back in Austin for the moment so I got to sit down with him and talk all sorts of stuff. Namely my wish to live in Mexico as well and how he made his way down there, and why he comes back every year. I'm literally jealous of this mans life. (though I would probably just chill down there full time if I could, and closer to some water. Listen and you will know what I'm talm bout.)In this episode we learn how he got to South Austin and how South Austin is an entity in and of itself. I school him a bit on some late 80's/early 90's rappers from South Austin, who are the main dudes who got me to start coming to Austin back in those days from Houston. Man this is a real good one right here, I finally got to sit down with my man Deuce and talk some shop. I first met Deuce when he was an on air personality on Austin's Hot 93 in the early to mid 2000's. Hot 93 was a special place, and maybe one of the last commercial urban radio stations to keep it real witht heir community. Many of the cities most important players in the hip hop world worked there (find out who when you listen) and they kept the doors fairly open to Texas talent and more.Since those days Deuce has been active in the community in many ways and has always been an inspiration to many people really trying to do things in the music and entertainment industries and beyond. He is the author of several popular books and is currently working on a book about the music industry and he even announces his big work that he has in the works right here on this podcast.We also talk about the postponement of the Austin Urban Culture Festival, to it's rightful spot in the spring during Texas Relays and oh so much more. Maaaaan this is a big one for me as I have been a fan of MOJOE for many years, and when we sat down to do this they informed me that I had never interviewed them before. Which is something I can't even fathom given the amount of times I have seen them live and how much I have listened to them and such. The guys played the record for me and a few other good folks and then we sat down to do the interview in the lovely upstairs portion of Simona's Coffee Bar in the Colton House Hotel on South Congress here in Austin. It really went down as they say. No super surprises, no screaming metal, just as the kids say, vibes. This one is a whole ass vibe and I do hope you enjoy it.

On this kick off to America Day weekend we are joined in the studio by the one and only DJ Jester the Filipino Fist. His latest mixtape/CD - Made in USA (with DJ Marz on one side, Jester on the other) is out now in them streets and it's the first mixtape in a while that will make you THINK. So many levels to this one, it's both a deft cultural critique AND a jammin ass mix that goes in directions you would never expect. I've been obsessing over dissecting the whole thing for a week now.
But it's not just all about the new tape. Jester and I go way back and he is one of my favorite people in the world. On this episode we talk about his early days with Prince Klassen in San Antonio running a scratch school and speaking of San Antonio there is a whole section on Scuba Steve. We also talk about how hip hop in Texas is not and never was limited to what you hear about from Houston, there's loads of layers to this and we try to peel back them all. He is one of the best turntablists (sp?) on the planet and was making viral TikTok videos way before there was even an internet, and cell phones were the size of a brick. When he finally releases his compilation DVD entitled 90's Jestah, the walls of Babylon will come crashing down. DJ Jester may be our only hope.

So honored to have my great friend Edica in the studio of sorts this week! We go way back to when I first came to Austin and she would help me promote shows and do SXSW things and all this, while she would work with cool artists like Houston's The Nice Guys and Dallas legends SoreLosers. She has always had her ears to the streets and when she made her transition into DJing she immediately began experimenting with sounds and releasing mixes that were jamming and outside the box. Her ability to mix hip hop and dance musics with more ethereal sounds has always been her signature and I think was a natural thing for her.
Hailing from Corpus Christi, Edica made the move to Brooklyn some years ago and really dove into the scene and became a resident DJ of Brooklyn Dub Club and Hi-Fi Social Club, and started her own dope online radio show series Dub & Effection which goes in a million different directions while keeping the dub steady as she goes. She is a top DJ who is a part of the Dub-Stuy movement but thankfully is now dividing her time between NYC and Texas so we get to see her more now. She most recently tore down Flamingo Cantina in Austin opening for Mad Professor and has a beautifully bright future ahead for sure. Check her out in the summer of 2022 if you are in Mexico City, Minneapolis, London, DC and more as she spreads her sounds around the world.

Stand up one time for my special guest Richard Henry. Richard has been a mainstay on the Austin scene for many years and has held many scenes on his back in a real way. Never afraid to take a chance or help a friend, Richard Henry is one of those dudes who will always be there, doing things. From back in them days bringing them club DJ's to the ATX to working within the indie rap community to doing many nights with my brother Mr. Cree (may he rest in peace) everything Richard does is pure and from the heart.
We met many years ago when companies like Scion and Red Bull were doing cool shows in Houston and Austin and I would hold down Houston and he would hold down Austin. We talk about all that shit and also about the time we brought NOLA bounce music pioneer Ice Mike to Austin and no one cared and then months or so later bounce became like the biggest thing out here, well Big Freedia at least. Man this week I got to sit down with Martin and Matt of one of my favorite bands, Grimy Styles to discuss a bit of their history and to get hyped up for their new album Late Pioneers of Psych Dub - out later this month.
The boys are back and in their truest form. On this episode we discuss the bands history and how guitarist Matt Beebe's work in the studios of Jamaica with the sons of Joe Gibbs on rhythm's that were voiced by artists like Cocoa T, Lutan Fyah, I-Wayne, Capleton, Luciano, Junior Reed and more led to the formation of the band upon his return.
I used to go see Grimy Styles play any chance that I got, and as discussed in this episode I considered them a secret weapon of sorts when I would book shows that crossed genres. These guys would blow peoples minds. How four dudes from Central Texas created some of the most interesting and forward thinking dub music of the mid-2000's and then some is beyond comprehension. Maaaaaaaaaan this one was a long time in the making! I have been wanting to sit down with the man El Dusty for a while now, as to me he is one of the most interesting musical artists in Texas, and beyond. The sounds he creates are next level and you never know what you will hear next. AND he is from Corpus Christi, Texas and I always have an interest in artists who really make their way in this world coming from smaller markets. Not that Corpus is short on musical history, it runs deep out there, but I think you know what I am saying.
Every time I am in Corpus I feel like I am at home, El Dusty shows everyone so much love and has their cool ass little downtown on lock. I have a feeling that Corpus Christi could be a boom town again if people see how dope it really is. I mean, @Whataburger comes from there, so it has to have something going for it. Naw but seriously there is a lot of potential in that city and El Dusty is out there making big things happen. He told me some things that even I didn't know about, like when he toured as the DJ for @babybash back when "Suga Suga" was #1 around the world. He also had a rap rock band. So much knowledge being dropped on this one, it's silly.

I have known Coka for some years through the music scene here in Austin, we both tend to like good musics and such, and I have watched her ascent in the Austin art community from the moment we met.
She is a super trooper in this city, state and world, bringing people together and showcasing artists who she finds to be amazing, and helping to give them the platforms that they need and deserve in a city that hasn't always embraced everyone equally - though through the work of many it is getting much better now. Seeing Austin open up and diversify (slowly but surely) is a beautiful thing and I am so thankful for organizations like The Projecto and Big Medium (and DAWA, Epistrophy Arts, HAAM y mas) for all of the work that they put in.

Welcome to the first in a series of Talk So Real throwback files - When Banner Met Bun! This is from my old radio show on KPFT in Houston, Damage Control. The night was September 12, 2002, I had just returned from New York City where we threw the release party for Devin the Dude's Just Tryin' to Live album. David Banner was in town producing tracks for Lil Flip, and at the time DJ Chill was Lil Flip's DJ on the road.
I did some photo's for Banner and we were in touch a lot back then. He had of course met and worked with Pimp C before, but had never met Bun B. He told me he was in town and Chill agreed to bring him to the station, so I called Bun and told him he should come down and meet David Banner. He of course did and we had one of the most epic interviews in our history that night. It was extra cool because I had my brother DJ Chill on the wheels and my other brother Zin - may he rest in POWER - by my side co-hosting with me.
I miss Zin every day, so hearing this is very special.
Bun and Banner break down A LOT about the music industry at the time. This was before the south took over hip hop, in fact this was back when the south was truly still fighting for respect at all in this game. There is so much real talk on this, and you have to listen to the end to hear the epic freestyle!

Lance and I go way back in the scene in Houston but really connected when he and Peter Beste started working on the Houston Rap book and what would later become two editions of Houston Rap Tapes. I love Lance's style because he lets his subjects talk and tell the story themselves. Telling the story of Houston rap is no mean feat, there are so many versions and such, and telling the story of DJ Screw is one hell of a challenge. The man Lance took that challenge and is delivering what is about to be the definitive story of DJ Screw.

I have had the honor and the pleasure of watching this man transition from freestyle king, to releasing dope albums to becoming a teacher and climbing the ranks in the world of Texas education, (which is very IMPORTANT, the man is needed) and most recently releasing a children's book with his son Ellison. My good friend deserves all of the accolades, but on this episode of Talk So Real, we really just talk, and reminisce about all sorts of things, like the time we had a meeting with Rawkus Records, and also the time we had a meeting with Music World. And it just goes from there.

Salih Williams and his brothers have been a musical force on the Texas scene for many years, starting out with their family band that toured the Texas circuit way back in the day, to his rise around the turn of the century as the man behind MOST of the hits of the big Houston rap wave. "Still Tippin'," "Barre Baby," "Purple Stuff," "Power Up," "Back Then," um, any of those ring a bell? Salih Williams and his Carnival Beats literally formed a lot of the sounds you know and love from Houston and beyond from the early to mid-2000's, when everyone was crunk up off that H-Town sound. Crazy thing is Salih is from Luling, Texas, where he stays till this day amongst his family and closest people to him. His latest project is called Dirty Water and it's some extremely real blues. Incredible songwriting and it just don't stop. I have known him for years and learned a lot from this conversation. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed making this. Matt Sonzala and Mike Flannery BEEN needing to get down on the podcast tip as there is a lot to talk about on so many levels. There are definitely levels to this podcast. You may come into it like yeah I know these dudes they fin ta clown I don't know maybe I don't need this as I have matured past my punk rock beginnings in Austin Texas like the Cavity doesn't exist anymore anyway get over it guys like for what and why would you do this we are mature now and you shouldn't think the same way you did when you are 20 when you are 50 but I think the same way I did when I was 17 and I don't give a fuck about how anyone else thinks I just want to entertain and share and bring the realness to the people and if you think a couple brothers like us gone do anything less up in this bitch then you are sorely mistaken. Denver Smith makes an appearance and brings a lot fool circle but Kenneth Cappello tripped all the way out and I think even unfriended Mike on Snapchat, Twitch and Visva within like ten minutes man which is real fucked up but we gone get that boy on one of these podcasts soon as ask him first question why he gives fuckboy fuck hole rappers with face tattoos the time of day ever when he is supposed to know what real punk is but no, he went all the way into the tiktok poseurs fake world of pseudo rap things that publicists dole out like esstacy outside the club #'s in Houston in 1990 when it was legal. Nu rap still legal now yeah we know but shit man we get a few podcasts in on this and we might be able to wield some power and knock that shit all the way out the frame on some like, "you shit non rapping face tattoos fuck heads should just stay home" type shit like we the vice presidents of rap. You don't know. You really have no idea. Someone alert Mark Twistworthy. We need to get the word out about this. Anyway, as the Descendants once said, "Enjoy."
OK First of all I am not a cumbia expert and I am not a dope mixing DJ BUT ALAS AND ALAK my daughter went to Mexico and brought me back a USB full of cumbias and sonoras and I was going through it this past week and pulling a lot of dope music and decided I needed to dedicate an entire show to it so here it is. We up in here in 2021 with the new music explosion that issssssss All Music Is World Music is back with yet another edition. Recorded deep in the night at my desk in Austin, Texas. As the rain falls down, filling our lakes and rivers and we transition into whatever is coming next. Are you ready for it?
Back in 1996 I had a show on Radio Static, a cable radio station in Amsterdam. I don't know who ever listened, I got a call here and there now and again. But I would basically just partake in coffee shop favors and hit the studio at I think 1 am on Saturday nights and play whatever I wanted to. Nothing's changed as they say. On this particular show I could describe it in a manner, similar to the opening lines of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
On this particular day, one of my best friends in the world ever, Flavia Roncelli and I went all over Amsterdam to buy about 30 peppers to have a stuffed pepper party that night. My friend Jasper was coming in from England/Scotland/Germany (he is a man of many mysteries) and so we invited a bunch of people over to my flat and fed them peppers and smoked a lot of weed and hash. We also drank wine, beer and genever, and then I busted out this liquid mescaline that a weirdo gave/sold me in a coffee shop and then we played Twister, and Jasper and I headed out with our friends Grishelda and Eliana on our bicycles and made our way to the studio. This show is the result. In 2021 I generally say that drugs are bad, but in 1996 they were pretty damn good.
We delve into our own version of the history of Scottish hip hop and play a lot of different things. Grishelda and Eliana basically had to hold us up after the show as we pushed our bikes home after the show like 3:30 am or something. I don't know. I remember more than I probably should about all of this. Fun times. Big ups Jasper McWhinnie, one of the many MC's of Scotland. We can't be stopped.
Man it really went down on this one. All music really is world music and we don't recognize borders when it comes to art. Covid be damned, we shall jam, and continue to jam. We do what we can to keep the mind free while our feet are locked, in shackles, our ears being told where we can and can't go, our people stuck in places where we thought were free but are not. But we can remain free. We can for sure. We can keep our freedoms and thrive, with music, and art, and culture, and buck the devil. Whole world a lie but the art will survive and thrive.
This is a really important podcast for me as I finally got to sit down with a real OG to me, legendary punk rock musician/promoter/ champion Larry Weaver of the band My 3 Scum, Eerie Records and more. Seeing him put on shows in my hometown showed me that it was possible and truly inspired me to try and help bring the all ages show vibes to Erie, PA in the late 80's. His inspiration brought me literally to the actual starting point of my career. And man it was such a fun time. We sat down to talk about the good ol' days and some other thangs of course. I'm hoping to be in Erie a lot more this year and I am hoping to expand this into a whole series. So many stories in my hometown.
Once again we recognize no boundaries around these parts. The open border steez is my lifestyle choice. Don't cage me in, bro, sis, they, srsly. Let me live. Let the music thrive. It comes from all over the place and I want it all. And I want to share it with you. We go round and round with this one and as always it's a surprise. Love to hear what you think of it. This is certainly not my favorite thing to do, but it had to be done. I lost one of my closest friends in Chris Edwards man. Literally one of my closest. Just a couple months after losing my stepfather in what has been the most surreal year yet.
Chris was an incredible human being. The best father and friend you could ever know. He stuck with his people through and through. In fact just two weeks before his passing, we talked about how much we appreciated each other for sticking together so long. No matter where we were in the world, we would be in touch. Chris called and woke me up on the morning of 9/11. We talked about everything.
He was also an extremely talented and underrated MC/DJ/Producer from South Austin, Texas. Born and raised. We lived in Brooklyn together in 1994 and had the time of our lives. On this extremely long podcast we dig into his music and get stories from those who were close to him in the music world - DJ Spinner T, DJ Rodney, Andre Walker, Keir Worthy, Don Scavone, Victorious, Mirage, Richard Henry and Josh Brockhausen.
This won't be the last tribute as I have more people I want to talk to. Word is his memorial will be at St. Igantius Church in Austin, Friday November 20th at 10am.

H-Town lost another real one. Though he was born in Atlantic City, NJ, Rick Royal came to Houston with his family in high school. He soon became known as one of the greatest MC's to ever emerge from Houston's burgeoning hardcore rap scene. He is known as one of the fore fathers of Gangsta/Reality Rap as his story telling street tales were some of the most vivid and real ever put on wax. He precedes most of your favorite rappers, and like many of Houston's underground legends, could be your favorite rappers favorite rapper.

it took me a lot of attempts to finish this particular self isolation mix. In reality it should have come out a lot sooner. When we were really panicking. You may still be panicking and so may be I, but I don't feel like I felt like six weeks ago, I feel a general sense of calm on top of total disbelief and panic and worry for the future. But I am trying to live in the present. And as old or as new as it is, jazz is a genre that can help you live in the present and stay grounded and refocus your mind, body and soul. And we all need some of that. We need to sit back and feel it. Ideally in some headphones. In an easy chair. Thinking about nothing. Feeling everything. Wanting nothing and knowing that you have it all even if you have nothing at all. You have the music. It's there for you. it exists. And you will survive right along with it. None of this music will ever die, and I hope you won't either. For a long, long, long,long, long, long time. We have so much more to do. The greats want and need our presence. This show took a minute to come out because I recorded the interviews before I got the Rodecaster Pro. The quality is ok but I wanted it to be better. I am learning and trying to figure out how to make these things sound even better. But I am a slow learner.
But I love love love everyone on this show and especially those who I had the honor of interviewing. AMEA has been one of my favorite rapper/singers for a few years now she always comes correct. Sometimes I can't stop listening to Skipp Coon's music and his new stuff is no different. We sample a couple on here. And Kalyn from Wheelchair Sports Camp is just the greatest human ever and a hell of a talented soul.

He is a true Houston legend, and like I say in the beginning of the podcast, you have to include Fat Tony when you talk about the best rappers from Houston. He is one of the best rappers period when it comes to live concerts and that goes back to when he was using two mics and a delay pedal. This man goes hard in all the right directions and has taken his music and style and Houston culture all around the world. Nothing but respect for this 3rd Ward ORIGINAL! I think I must have said that maybe I would make a punk/metal mix in the night and then I got a message from Ms. Kelly in Houston saying she was waiting on me to drop one, so I got on it. The sound quality varies throughout as this is just a mess of shit I have collected over time and threw into folders on random hard drives that I had to dig out and realize that I am maybe the most unorganized person ever on the face of this planet. Anyway I pray that you are all staying safe and with loved ones and doing the right thing and not tripping out too hard. I am tripping a bit but I am working on it. Love y'all. First of all I want to say that I love you all. Every single one of you. Everyone who sits and listens to my scheisser. I appreciate you a lot. I do these more as an exercise to keep myself up on new sounds, and for the past half a year or so I didn't do shit. This self isolation is making me realize that even more. I pretty much self isolated myself already, and I don't mean that as a meme or a cliche, I really kind of did. Going out lost it's luster unless I was in another country, HEB was already my social gathering place, even though I knew no one there, it was still a spot I could go and be present with the people. Live shows and casual nights out were killed by the voices of random people talking loudly about nothing or just utterly worthless things. I treasure my friends and my family and long to be in the presence of you all, but I let the general public get me way too down. And the raver bullshit people started to lump in with rap music put me over the edge. I couldn't listen to even a friend's demo for fear that they had fallen into the trap. For fear that the Xanax monster got them as well. I couldn't take it, I really couldn't take it. And now here we are locked in our homes (but still hitting the HEB) sleeping until noon (if you are lucky, or the above pictured Elena) watching tv and crying about our isolation. Fools! If you have a roof and some walls and some windows and some water and food you are already doing better than a lot of the population. Use this time wisely to clear your mind and explore your soul. It's ok to be afraid. I am fucking scared as hell for me and you and everyone else. But in the end, and this will end, maybe we can all come out smarter and stronger. I love all of you who have been keeping us entertained from your homes via social media. This is about what I can do right now, release a mix here and there. This one as always is quite a mess, but also beautiful in it's messiness. I play my friends, I play Cumbias from little USB's that my daughter brought me from Colombia, we get noisy, we get Irie, we go all over the world, which is what each and every one of us should do once this shit is over. Travel, see everything, meet people everywhere. Stay alive. I truly love you all and pray for this world every day. And night. (No Kid Cudi) XoxoxoxoX matt
I had computer problems and other problems in the last six or however many months or so that prevented me from dropping a new playlist show. Also sometimes I would sit down to record one and all the music sucked. As I try to make these shows strictly about new music, it just wasn't happening in certain moments.
But now we are all on lock down. Marshall dropped his law on our motherfucking heads (sort of) and here we sit. My musician friends are all live streaming things and keeping us entertained so I figured I would do my part. Whether you like it or not at least you now know that as of this moment I am still alive and so are you. This mix won't kill you, I promise, but as always, you might hate it. In fact, you more than likely will hate it.
But there is a bigger plan here. One, say your boss has forced you to come in to work. Play this in the office and he or she will shut it down immediately. You can all go home, hopefully with pay. Also you will notice that this mix goes all around the world. Paying respect to humans from every nook and cranny who come with the sounds that enable us to get down. It is with a heavy heart that we had to come together once again to celebrate the life of yet another fallen soldier in our Houston Rap community. Bushwick Bill passed on this past weekend after a bout with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He is one of Houston's most important legends of rap. And was an incredible human. The Geto Boys set off an incredible industry and culture in Houston and put the city on the hip hop map. Bushwick Bill was an integral player in this and remained true to his music and his faith until his last breath.
This is the full three hour show. Unfortunately for some reason KPFT in Houston was not recording and archiving shows this particular week so we got the audio in 3 parts from Skyla Dawn's Instagram live file. Thank God for her for real. She really saved the day and this important document.
Unfortunately, this being in three parts means we lost very minimal parts of the show, but in those parts some important words were being spoken. Most importantly when DJ Premier called in and explained how my brother Carlos Garza, aka DJ Styles of the Odd Squad, was an integral part of getting Gangstarr together and then it cuts a bit out where we are giving high praise to the legend ESG. This recording also starts about two minutes into the show so you miss a bit of my intro.
Kool Keith calls in as well as OG Fatal from Austin, TX. Daddy O from Stetsasonic came down to the studio live and talked about Bushwick's place in the golden era of hip hop. Texas T comes down and talks about the first time Bushwick ever rapped into a mic. Yungstar talks about being young and first hearing the Geto Boys and even some other classic hip hop tracks.

The two engage in some real talk about Houston rap and their travels through the scene. Coming up in punk rock, metal and whatever other music they loved, being in Houston, rap music was inescapable. It was there. Everywhere. In every car, in every apartment, in so many of the spots, Houston rap, music made specifically in the neighborhood you were in at that moment, was everywhere. And Thank God for it.
Anyway, this podcast almost didn't come out as Matt's fat ass sounded like a wheezing pigs about to die in his chair. This is the first ever Damage Control Radio show on KPFT. I’ve been digging in boxes and boxes of tapes looking for this for over a year, since Zin (Anthony Mills) passed, in January of 2016. OK I haven’t been actively looking for it for a year, but I did look for it last year, in January and in December. When I got the news that JD (Jason Dozier) passed, I was pretty stunned, that was one of my lil brothers, one of my real ones. When I realized that I lost my brother Zin in January and then my brother JD in December, I went super crazy with memories. So many with them both, but then I was like, “Oh shit man, JD was the DJ on the first few Damage Control’s.” The three of us literally started Damage Control together, and I’ve lost them both. We’ve lost them both. Messes me up so bad.
Listening to this recording I was like, “damn, we came out swinging. Hard.” I need someone to take these tapes and rip em way better, the sound isn’t incredible on this three hour show. The b-sides of both tapes are lower than the a-sides, I don’t know why. I don’t know anything about these computer things. All I know is that the music jams.
I was rearranging some things in my storage space like I do from time to time and was going through mad tapes, so many tapes looking for any of the shows that I did with Zin and JD together. I found this one and thought it was like the third show. My first daughter was born on May 18th of 2002 and I always thought the first Damage Control show was on May 23rd of 2002. But that may have been the try out show. So I popped in this tape from June 13th of 2002 and about an hour in I hear myself say that JD is about to get live in the mix. He had been spinning for all the breaks since the start of the show, but I never said anything till then. I was like “YES FINALLY I FOUND A ZIN AND JD TAPE!” And I thought it was the third show. And I went to bed. The next day I was listening as I was ripping it and I heard myself say that this was the first ever show and I was like damn man, I found it. The first ever Damage Control show, with my brothers Zin and JD.
I really can’t even deal.
I was back in Houston for seven months at that point, after three years in Chicago. I was hot in the middle of my time with Murder Dog Magazine, and I was starting to do some things on the internet, mostly with Ray Tamarra’s thecrusade.net, a pioneering music information website for sure. Ray called into the show even. Anyway, the show features a lot of Midwest gangsta shit, some Houston shit, and some super special guests.
Baby Bash was in the house back when his name was still Baby Beesh and he brought along Mercilous, we had Lo Life from the 5th Ward Boyz in the house, Sam J, Bobby Fine, SMUGGLAZ, man it really went down.

Hot on the heels of Hurricane Katrina, Houston was bracing for Hurricane Rita which was supposed to wipe out our coast and do much damage to Houston. Everyone freaked out and left town, of course. After seeing what happened in New Orleans, most people were not trying to stick around. The roads were crazy with cars like I had never seen before. Inbound lanes were opened to make them outbound lanes. Shit was insane.
The whole crew of Damage Control headed out of town earlier in the day, but Matt Sonzala stayed to do the show, and got to do it alone. Usually the show would have up to 100 guests (not kidding) all around the building, but on this night, only the one and only Lean Sippa from Belgium came through (he was in town staying at a hotel and weathered the whole storm, and he brought us Belgian beers!), and also the one and also only Devin the Dude came down.
Devin came fresh from the studio with demos of songs that would later become the Coughee Brothaz first solo album. I played a bunch of hard ass gangsta shit because we didn't have any guests with their stupid sippin lean out my cup while a stripper dance in the heart of that H-town bs. I got to play whatever I wanted, and tell people to get the hell out of town.
My daughter Elena was only 2 months old at the time and Eva was 3 years old. After the show we hit the road at 3am from 290 and TC Jester. At 8am we had only gotten to the Beltway, so we turned around and went home.
When we got up in the morning the gas station by our house had a huge line but they had gas, so we filled up and tried again to leave for Austin. It was a really sunny and nice day.
The highway was littered with cars. The intersection of I-10 and 71 looked like a scene out of Mad Max. No gas, and people just all over the side of the road, the median, etc, sleeping, waiting, hoping.
But we rode right into Austin and I was still high from doing this show. Because I got to play the music I love with a couple of my really great friends. K-Rino came down later too. Anyway I wanted to share this with you. Please share it far and wide and leave comments. THANKS!

To me, it was one of the most tragic deaths in Houston Hip-Hop history. Losing DJ Screw, Pimp C, Big Moe, and so many others... all of those deaths hit me pretty hard. But when DJ Chill called me at 11:30pm on May 1st 2006 to tell me Hawk had been shot, my heart sunk.
But at that first moment I really didn't believe it. "Who would shoot Hawk? Why?" To me he was one of the nicest, most honest and reliable people in the entire community. I didn't know anyone who had any problem with Hawk. Within the music community, he was really one of those dudes that everyone liked. And within the Screwed Up Click, he really was the 5 Star General.
The passing of his brother Fat Pat in 1998 was a huge hit to the Houston community. Then when Screw passed in 2000, that was about as bad as things could get. Those were horrible deaths to have to deal with and get past. I had a hard time with them both, but to me, Hawk was a real friend.
We didn't hang out and BBQ and shit like that, but when I needed to rally the SUC for something, when we needed to raise money for the station, when we were doing anything for charity, anything, Hawk was generally the first person to say yes and come down and lend a hand. Within the SUC he was very literally THAT DUDE that was holding everyone together after their - for lack of a better term - leaders died.
Hawk was a true H-Town original and his wife Meshah is doing a great job raising their sons and keeping his legacy alive. Check www.pushermania.com this week and I will post all the info I can find regarding the day he is being given by the City of Houston. May 8th will officially be Hawk's day in H-Town, beginning next week. It's about damn time.

The good people behind Youth On Record believe that young people – those who are both at-risk and written-off – have the potential to turn their lives around. They are committed to bringing proven methods of empowerment and behavioral modification through music education to youth in Colorado who need it the most.
Their facility located on Denver's west side is a second home to a lot of great young people with musical aspirations as high as the city they are from (Mile High City, duh). There they can take lessons in hip hop production, multiple instruments, singing, and more and they can use the facilities to create and professionally record their music as well.

On Sunday January 3rd, 2016, I lost a brother, and the world lost a leader. My brother Zin and a friend were killed in a tragic crash in Denver, as they sat at a red light and a man in an SUV who was fleeing some firemen who had approached his vehicle as he was asleep at a red light just a couple of blocks away. He hit the gas, reached a speed of about 70mph, and about two blocks down the road, he killed one of my greatest friends.
On June 6, 2016 I went back to what I still consider my home base, KPFT in Houston, to gather a group of friends and family in tribute to our brother Zin. We went back to where it all started with he and I. We started the Damage Control program on KPFT on May 23rd, 2002. And it hurt like crazy to come back for this reason, but it raised me and I am sure a lot of people up super high as they heard stories of how Zin touched half of Houston with his great vibes and energies. Dude is still a ray of light shining down on us all.

This past weekend after learning that the legendary Clarence "Blowfly" Reid had passed away, I got to thinking about just how many times I had the good fortune of seeing him live.
My first time was in 1993. I heard he was doing a show in Austin, and all I knew was that he was not only hilarious, but he was also basically the first rapper ever. His "Rap Dirty" single was straight up hip hop, before anyone even knew what hip-hop was. And like the title implies, it was basically a funny ol' sex rhyme. Blowfly hailed from Miami and it's no coincidence that many of the rappers from his town followed suit and released controversial, often over the top dirty songs as well.
I wanted to meet the man who had so much influence on the culture that I loved, but really never got the recognition for it, especially not back then. So Eric "CeePlus" Castillo and I hopped in my old ass Toyota station wagon with only an am radio in it and headed to Austin from Houston. We had no hook ups and no connection to Blowfly, and honestly didn't know anything about the band who would be opening for him/backing him - Dino Lee's Luv Johnson.
The way I remember it, we went to Austin early in the day and went right to the venue. We started asking questions as to when Blowfly would arrive and someone gave me Dino Lee's number. Called him up, let him know we were there to do an interview, and he set us up right around soundcheck.
The interview is actually with both Blowfly and Dino Lee. Blowfly's reverence for Dino and his music opened my eyes to a lot of things. Before that, I was about tired of white boy funk (#Austin) and especially white rappers. But after hearing Blowfly's opinions, I was pretty much a changed man (sort of).
A man who pretty much invented a style, and continually innovated, and not to mention wrote many hits for himself and others under his actual name (Clarence Reid) was giving it up to bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dino Lee's Luv Johnson.
Shit tripped me out, I was 21 years old. And I got to sit and talk to Blowfly for an hour.
Later in life I was working for a festival and met Tom Bowker, a dude from Miami who flew up to Chicago specifically to catch a Blowfly show, and ended up playing drums for him and managing him in his later years. Got to see him perform so many times in different capacities and even got to sit in while he crafted songs with Devin the Dude (which to my knowledge have never come out).
Thanks to Tom Bowker, Blowfly's career rolled on literally until his final days. Dude was touring in a van punk rock style up until last year and if he would have pulled through this last time, would probably hop in the van again. He left us an incredible body of work, and for that I am thankful. And I am even more thankful for getting to spend some time here and there with him over the years.
I don't remember who I did this interview for, or if it ever even came out. I know I played part of it on my radio show on KPFT that year and I think MAYBE it was for either Texas Beat or Thorazine. Not totally sure. Anyway, at the end Blowfly asks me to be sure and send him a copy. Pretty sure that never happened. Hope he can hear this wherever he is right now.

Randomly surfing the local radio stations this past Saturday night, Matt Sonzala stopped on Austin's own community station KAZI 88.7 FM and heard a strong track called "What Happened to Austin?" Thankfully the DJ said the artists name - Lench - directly after the song, and Matt found him right here on Soundcloud.
The song is a powerful indictment of what has been happening in Austin, from a real native who has strong roots in both South and East Austin. While he agrees that progress can be good, he also shakes his heads as so much of what he loved about his hometown has disappeared.
Lench puts this situation into words like no rapper before him. The song goes deep and Matt Sonzala and Lench have a real talk about, What Happened to Austin?

Today I lost one of my realest brothers, Anthony "Zin" Mills. We started the Damage Control radio program together on KPFT in Houston in May of 2002, the same week my daughter Eva was born. We had some incredible times and I will dig up more exclusive audio for his tribute show this Wednesday Night, January 6th, 11pm Central on www.kpft.org or 90.1 fm in Houston.
This audio here was from a show I also used to do on KPFT with DJ's CeePlus and Samplistik called Reprogram Radio. Black Eyed Peas were in town for a show at I think the Engine Room and Zin was rolling with them that day and brought them to KPFT, where he happened to have his band set up.
Suffice it say it really went down. May our brother Zin rest in peace - power - paradise and may he never be forgotten...

It. Went. Down.
This wasn't intended to be a podcast. A few years back, Scion held a music conference called the Scion Music(less) Conference, and it was super rad. They basically brought out a lot of my friends in the industry, and we did panels and talks, and really just kicked it by a pool in Los Angeles and chilled on down with some snacks and drinks.
This interview happened beside said pool. It was the opening night, and this was an exclusive dinner with some extreme taste makers, all posted up eating good, and chilling. They had interviews with Angelo Moore from Fishbone and Nile Rodgers live on stage, and I was smack dab in the middle interviewing Too $hort.
No one recorded these interviews, except me. I brought my little MP3 recorder thang, and decided that I needed to at least record my interview for myself. Welp, I recorded all three interviews, and let me tell you, all three are great. I was sitting with Killer Mike and asked him to make sure it kept recording, and since we all went back to back, it was easy. I got it all.
You can hear Killer Mike laughing throughout the interview. Too $hort was a huge influence on him, and man, this was such a special night.
Shout out to Jeri Yoshizu at Scion! I was thinking about cool things I could post up on this here Pushermania Podcast Network thing, and I remembered that I had this audio. I hit up Jeri to see if it would be ok to post it and she said yes and I said YAY and welp, here it goes.

Only a few weeks back, Pushermania's Matt Sonzala was spending a Sunday afternoon the way he often spends his Sunday afternoons, listening to David Rodigan's reggae show on BBC 1xtra. Each week Rodigan highlights a track he feels is worth giving some extra shine, and out of his speakers came Ch'An, a new artist out of Barbados with an incredible single called "Trippin'."
Matt had to find this song, and after an exhaustive search, that led literally nowhere, he found a link to an Instagram knockoff site that let him know the label behind this powerful new voice is Pretty Boy Records, also based in Barbados, and they had just released a version of "Trippin'" to the internet, on Soundcloud of course!
A quick message to the label via Soundcloud messenger and the connect was made and soonafter Matt and Ch'An were on the Skype machine, recording this podcast.
