Steve Jobs, the American inventor best known for founding Apple, once said, “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are.”
This is such a big challenge especially if you work in a field serving customers where you may believe you don’t have the luxury to say no to requests. However, oftentimes your success will depend on just saying NO.
But how do you know when is it OK to say no? And how can you say no without upsetting people? In this episode you will learn a framework for sayying No.

I have spoken to globally recognized authors, Harvard professors, military leaders, psychologists, pscyhitiatrics, people who have done scientific reserahc on how to become better at the so called "soft" skills to help you thrive in your career.
I want to thank you for being with me in this learning journey. I started this alongside my graduate studies in Organizational Psychology at Harvard, and through my own career journey which at this time involves working with multiole technical teams to help them become high perfoming, and create an agile organization.
This is why today I chose to highlight this topic of agility because it embodies what soft skills are about, how to integrate human dynamics to deliver a solution.
In this episode I’ll play some excerpts from some of the folks who co-created the famous Agile Manifesto, the base document for all things agile. Let's listen to Jeff Sutherland talking about what makes a great team, Jon Kern, on what we really need or don’t need, to get things done faster, and Arie van Benekum on the essentials of collaboration.
It is time to take an inventory of your year, figure out what do you eally want: a new job, a new career, growth.
So I will replay an excerpt of my interview with executive coach and author Dr Gary Crotaz. He is considered one of the top coaching leaders in the world. Listen to his model based on his book The IDEA Mindset where he breaks down how to conduct a good self assessments and define our true path.

The feeling that management or even team members do not realize how much we contribute to a team is something I hear often. We usually hear the advice of ‘just put your head down’ do the work and it will be noticed.' But this is rarely the case and we just need to be more strategic about it.
This is why when I read the book Impact Players: How to Take the Lead, Play Bigger and Multiply Your Impact by Liz Wiseman, I knew I wanted her on the show. In the book and as she discusses in our conversation, she describes what disnguishes good employees vs those that really make an impct and seemed to be relied upon the most.

If there is a skill I need help with, and I am sure you do to, is how to deal with difficult people. People who either may come at you screaming, or be condescending or whom we may simply be consider plain crazy. Sometimes we may be the crazy person in a situation.
So I had the honor to speak with a psychiatrist about it. Dr Mark Goulston gave critical techniques on how to act during a moment of heated conversation.

In the podcast we talk a lot about communication skills and using our body language is a skill we neglect. We need to learn how to properly read our bodies and use them to send a message as well.
I had the pealsure of talking with Mark Bowden, who has been featured on major TV shows, he has written books about body language and one of the most popular TED talks called ‘The Importance of Being Inauthentic’.

One of my favorite guets was Peggy Klaus, and as you may know she is the author of multiple books including ‘Bragg: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without Blowing It.'
The main challenge for many people, especially in tech, is how can we really promote ourselves when we do not want to look like complete a…holes. To distinguish between both, let's listen to an excerpt of my conversation with peggy where she also shares how to do proper bragging.

'Getting things done' is a motto I love and a book I enjoy from David Allen. He even created a whole method based on the book. So every time someone asked me ‘how can I become more productive’ I tell people to read the book and even better, if you are short on time now, just listen to my interview with him: https://www.hardcoresoftskillspodcast.com/category/productivity/
In this episode he summarizes his method.

This week’s interview was one I had wanted to do for a long time. I work as Product Owner working closely with software developers creating apps at a military organization. We use the Scrum framework, which is one of the multiple agile approaches focused in delivering solutions quickly to customers. The approach is not just about being technically savvy, but on making good use of those critical skills like teamwork, listening and management.
As many organizations are talking today about becoming “agile” it is important to know what it really means. Dr. Jeff Sutherland (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffsutherland/) is the ideal person to discuss this. He is the chairman and founder of Scrum Inc. (www.scruminc.com) , a signatory of the Agile manifesto, coauthor of the Scrum Guide and the creator Scrum@Scale. He is also the coauthor of the best selling book Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time.
Today we talk about the misconceptions of Agile, the origins of the Scrum framework, ,and how his military experience and his work doing scientific computer modeling influenced him.
In this episode we talk about Curiosity. This time we talk about the scientific research on Curiosity with Dr Alison Hostmeyer (https://www.dralisonh.com/). She is a humanistic researcher and talent development consultant. Her research focuses on curiosity and associated mental, emotional, and motivational attributes. Dr Hortsmeyer is also adjunct faculty for USC Marshall School of Business Executive Education and the inaugural Research Fellow appointed to USC Annenberg Center for Third Space Thinking.
Today we talk about science says on curiosity and what can we do to cultivate this skill.

Today our focus will be not on the concept of skills but attributes. If you are a frequent listener of this podcast you know I really enjoy talking with current and former members of the military because they have great insights learned on the field which we can apply basically anywhere.
I was very happy to have this guest on the show to share his lessons as a Navy Seal Commander and which he captures in his book The Attributes (https://theattributes.com/buy/)
Rich Diviney draws upon over 20 years of experience as a Navy SEAL Officer where he completed more than 13 overseas deployments – 11 of which were to Iraq and Afghanistan. Since retirement a few years ago, Rich has worked as a speaker, facilitator, and consultant with the Chapman & Co Leadership Institute and Simon Sinek Inc.
We talked about attributes and you will learn how he differentiates these from skills. The attributes he talks about are quite similar to those we address here
These are grouped into the categories of mental acuity, drive, leadership, teamability and grit.

This is the final episode of the season two. This season we have featured mini master classes from well-known experts so listen to the previous episodes from Season 1 and Season 2 to learn more.
In this episode we discuss Emotional Intelligence. In my IO Psychology classes this semester we talked a lot about this concept which was by the coined by Peter Salovey and John Meyer, but popularized by Daniel Goleman. It refers to the idea that just as we have cognitive intelligence or IQ, we also have EQ or ability to manage our emotions and those of others.
My guest today wrote a book which addresses EQ and other non-technical skills like self-awareness using a highly technical approach. Gilbert Eijkelenboom wrote the book People Skills for Analytical Thinkers (https://www.mindspeaking.com/book). What I love about this book is that it uses very relatable language for those of us who work in tech and provides very pertinent advice.
Gilbert is a former Data and Analytics Consultant and founder MIndspeaking (mindspeaking.com), a company which helps data scientist and analysts develop soft skills for business . We talked about his career as poker player, his own journey to become more emotionally intelligent and he gives specific steps you can apply as well.

Forming teams is certainly not an easy task and there is no easy formula to follow. There are many books addressing how to recruit and improve teams with very different approaches. One of the recent books I read on the topic fascinated me because it proposed a different yet successful approach. The book The Talent War (https://thetalentwar.com/) proposes that just as it is done in successful special forces teams, hiring should be based on character, not on skill.
The Talent War was written by two former members of the US military, Mike Sarraille and George Randle. I spoke with George about his own experience serving in the military, the motivation to write this book and he shares critical advice for those who are recruiting and those who want to be recruited.
