Katleho Mallela is a young South African actress and producer of the play Ruined_Road to Fringe. At a young age she won a scholarship to go and study drama at the New York Film Academy in LA. When she was there she got frustrated by not seeing stories of black women being told. She then found a black playwright who wrote a play for her based on the war in Congo in the 60s and how women were raped and mistreated. This story resonated a lot with Katleho as it was very similar to everyday lived experiences of women in SA. The play was so well-received in the US that she decided to bring it back home to SA.
Katleho is currently working with a small team to create a campaign to create dialogue around femicide and gender-based violence. She is using her play and other forms of media to tell her story and encourage other women to tell their stories too.
