In Part Three of my Return To Basics Campaign, I am going to remind you of the three questions new acquaintances will be asking themselves to position you accurately. In silence, they will be asking, "Can I trust this person?" This question will be followed by, "Do they know what they are talking about?" And finally, "Do they care about me?" Knowing these three questions are passing through their heads, provides you with an opportunity to respond accordingly.

This year's NCAA College Baseball World Series Trophy went to LSU and rightfully so. In an interview with their coach before the final game, the coach was asked the secret to his success to date. Without missing a beat, he responded with, "We spend a lot of time on the fundamentals and basics of the game." BRILLIANT!.

The ball comes your way ... catch it. The pitch is a strike ... hit it. When you run, run fast. You do these things correctly every time and you too will be raising the winner's trophy before too long.

The secret? The secret is spelled basics and fundamentals in every sport ... in every business.

A common problem that we all must come to terms with involves daily communication. We we think we are saying may not be what people are hearing. This is the first of four episodes focusing on communication reminders. Today refers to face-to-face encounters. Future episodes will include the telephone, the written word and speaking in public. You will quickly notice that Mike's voice in this episode sounds a bit froggy due to a nagging cough which is taking all too long to shake. There just might be something to this age thing. LOL

I received a phone call from a former client who was seeking advice now that he found himself floundering without full-time employment. Being on the downside of the curve, employment wise, I feel bad for men and women who have a job on Friday and find themselves unemployed on Monday.

This gentleman was open to any advice I might have for him. I gave him my best suggestion given the current state of affairs. I knew it would be easier said than done. But if one word sums up my opinion it would be VISIBILITY.

There are four primary myths that are responsible for thwarting a travel professional's progress. Today, I am going to address ther first one: Sales Is a Numbers Game. The truth of the matter is that sales more closely resembles a game of darts.

Years ago sales professionals were taught that if they made enough calls the sales would follow. In other words, if you threw enough mud against the wall, some of it is bound to stick. Although that philosophy might work now and then, (even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then,) it is not the most prudent use of one's time.

My suggestion: Pick a target and go get yourself known. If they appreciate honesty, knowledge, service and value, you soon will be adding to your client list.

It became glaringly apparent this week that the majority of people today have a need to talk, share and be heard. I have always known but this week I once again saw it in action. I stopped in to visit one of my neighbors (90 years old) and in twenty minutes I think I might have said five words. There is a good chance that you know a handful of people like this.

Referring to another neighbor Bob Chamow, I still don't know much about him. He knows a lot about me. This week I try to remind you how easily you can position ypourself as the "go-to source" by simply getting away from you"and begin focusing on your audience. Bob was a successful salesman in his day there is no doubt.

This may sound absurdly simple but trust me, it is not. Asking questions is a valuable skill; one which will pave your way to professional salesmanship with litle question or need for apology.

For those of you who listened to last week's episode, you heard Mike stumble as his memory failed him while remembering his famous 12 Word Marketing Plan.

We are all in this thing together, and we all are prone to making mistakes now and then. Do not hesitate for a moment to contact people. They are no different than you and me. And they are all approachable. (Get out there.)

Live current events often makle up my weekly messages, and this past week is no exception. We were visiting my wife's brother and sister-in-law in Sarasota, FL when I was once again reminded of the importance of listening.

In this instance we were the recipient of a non-stop verbal updating that soon became the topic of this week's message.

There was no give-and-take in today's example. We spent 90-minutes "taking." Give a 5-minute listen to today's post and you will once again receive my message loud and clear .... I hope.

Listening, my friends, remains the key for healthy, ongoing relationships.

Just as two plus two will always equal four, there are a few business lessons that will always hold true.

In today's episode Mike reminds the listener to The Rule of 7 and Three Percentages worth understanding.

It is important for all entrepreneurs to internalize the fact that they have not invented any new challenges, problems or apparent setbacks. It is, has been, and will continue to be an uphill battle for all of us to make a living.

Those who will eventually win will be those who learn by their failures and mis-fires and continue to "get their uniforms dirty.

When asked when it is time to quit, all I can offer with all sincerity is, "NOT TODAY."

Mike was first introduced to Affirmations in the early 80's and apparently, accordiong to one of the all-time greatest professional tennis players, Affirmations continue to play a major role with today's competitive athletes and business professionals.

Today's reminder is considered MAJOR by Mike in this week's episode. It comes via another live experience from Cooperstown's Clark Gym. Mike reminds us of the importance of letting others share their experiences without our trying to one-up their story.

You already know what you know and chances are very few people are genuinely interested in what you have to say, (Sad, but I am afraid too close to the truth.)

Get other people talking and fuel their stories with inquiring questions. This last sentence could very well be the secret to your future success.

Today's message clearly reminds us not to wish our lives away. Time has a way of passing us by with or without our consent. Mike shares three personal examples as reminders that the seasons will continue to come and go and it is up to us to take advantage of each and every day to the best of our abilities.

Soon, very soon, you will be wishing you had accomplished more with the time you had.

Today's message reminds us of the importance of doing what we can today to avoid disappointment tomorrow. All good farmers know that it is wise to mow the fields in dry weather and complete the task before the weather changes. Likewise, intelligent decisions today regarding our future health will make the days ahead more fruitful and enjoyable.

And so it is with our businesses. While we have the energy, the tools and the proper attitude it is high time we communicate with both our prospects and clients to avoid having to utter the meaningless phrase "I should have."

Hey! If not you, who? If not now, when?

Today I will be sharing two suggestions brought to light this week. One deals with better communication while the other focuses on the mental aspect of your business.

INC Magazine reported in an article this week that the response rate for shorter emails is nearly double that of longer worded emails. This makes sense since therre is so much "noise" out there today, people are quick to hit the delte button. Less is more. Shorter is better.

The second example comes from the Colorado Buffalo's newly reenergized football team. They are bouncing back from ten years of losing to a current record of 3-0. Much of the credit here goes with the fact that they now "believe" in themselves. Belief worked for the NT Mets back in 1973 and it is working for the Buffs in 2023.

And, I might add, it will work for you once you start believing in your value and contribution to your personal marketplace.

This week's episode shares an experience Mike had while collecting his brother's mail while on vacation. He came across a non-travel industry trade magazine and flipped to a marketing article written for building contractors.

If your business has anything to do with people, your success will largely be determined by your fundamental and basic people skills. Take a moment to listen to today's episode, and you will soon see, regardless of your industry, your path to the top just may be easier than you are currently making it.

In preparing for an upcoming presentation, I am trying to decide if brand new material will prove to be appreciated more than tried and true business-building fundamentals. I came to the conclusion that fresh material for the sole purpose of "new" would not be in my audiences' best interest.

The long and the short of this week's message, reminder, lesson and/or episode can be compared to another blinding flash of the obvious. I have nothing NEW to share with you this week, but today's post is as important as any.

Silence, or lack of updated client communication, opens the door for misinterpretation, fear and negative feelings which simply does not have to happen. As customers, we all like to be kept in the loop with the feeling that our business, (as meager as it may be,) is important to the seller. When you stop to think about it, it really is not that difficult.

Here are three examples of my own which help deliver today's message. I am sure they will conjure up a number of personal stories of your own.

On two occasions this week,I was reminded of the importance of follow-up.

My first example came from my having to order a new cell phone case and a sincere thank you card that accompanied the package.

My second example came from a Eye Doctor who made time to follow-up with her patient (my wife) after what I considered to be a very busy day in surgery and a long list of follow-up phone calls.

I know better than most how busy you are, and how many excuses come to mind when it comes time to follow up on your customers and clients. Take a listen to this weeks episode, and I hope your creativity will become stimulated as you move forward and will find the time and make the time to follow up appropriately.

You will be glad you did.

I do not normally make it a habit to recommend books that I have read to my audience unless I really feel it will do them some good. With this in mind, I recently read a book about personal change, titled the little wonders playbook without hesitation, I recommend this book to whom ever is seriously interested in making slight changes in their life for the better.

In today's episode, I will highlight 4 areas of the book that caught my immediate attention in which I am personally working on as I record this podcast. Do yourself a favor, and check out www.littlewondersbook.com

Sometimes it makes sense to read a book twice if you gained a great deal of information and stimulation from it on the first read. This is exactly what happened to me this past week when I was introduced to a book by Alan Weiss and Lisa lighter, titled masterful marketing, the title caught my attention, and I was immediately prepared to purchase a copy when I double checked my library and saw them in fact, I had already bought this book and read it from cover to cover.

In today's episode I'm going to share just a few underlined passages that caught my at in hope that it it will stimulate your thinking and help with your marketing creativity moving forward.

The today's overlying message is clear: When you enjoy and benefit from reading a good book, read it again.

I was recently reminded that in order to experience a positive outcome, you must become an active participant. In this episode Mike uses a billion dollar lottery winner as an example of being "in it to win it."

The same relationship holds true when trying to build a profitable travel business. You must get your uniform dirty and take the ups and the downs with equal enthusiasm.

Take a listen to this week's brief reminder and after exercising a little due diligence, get ready to throw the dice with confidence knowing that sooner or later, the bones will roll in your favor.

While enjoying a morning cup of coffee on my back porch in upstate New York, I found myself thinking of the difference between a professional and an amateur. My mind segued to the professional golfer, and I reminded myself that at 6:30 a.m. in the morning the professional golfer would be hitting golf balls in the backyard polishing his trade. The amateur, on the other hand, would be hitting the snooze button, hoping to steal another 30 to 35 minutes of sleep before starting their day.

The bottom line of today's episode challenges the travel professional to begin focusing on areas requiring a little work and attention, while practicing the skills necessary to differentiate themselves from the competition.

Today's episode features two examples of service providers, falling asleep at the wheel when it came to communicating properly on what appear to be closed deals. It is not the buyers responsibility to keep in touch with the seller. In today's episode, Mike stresses the importance of communicating often after the deal has been made.

A second message reminds us of the importance of establishing trust and confidence in the supplier during early communications. Without the luxury of body, language or facial expressions, the way you modulate your voice and tone over the telephone, is largely responsible for the future success of the current communication. Due to the fact that most of us can become overworked and overwhelmed, we often pick up the telephone without thinking, and thereby destroy any good that could come from this conversation.

Today's episode will serve as a reminder of the importance of handling incoming calls in an upbeat, interested, and professional fashion each and every single time the phone rings. (there's also Halls true for outgoing calls.)

I don't mean to sound like I'm insulting you or talking down to you, but I do feel that most people can improve upon their telephone skills, thereby improving their chances for success. Here goes. You decide if the shoe fits.

Sometimes you just don't have anything of value to add to the conversation. That is exactly what happened to me prior to this month's first episode of MIKE'd UP MARCHEV.  I am a few days late in recording episode #1 for the month of June. This was because I just didn't have anything of value to add as far as I was concerned.

This delay, however, conjured up a message of its own. As professional sales people our job is not to fill dead space with meaningless banter. Our job is to bring value to each and every conversation.

In this episode of Mike's Up Marchev I will be sharing an observation I've had for many years and one that resurfaced last week at a travel conference in Nashville, TN.

I refer to this as one upmanship, and I think it is a reminder for everyone, whether they are involved in the travel industry or not.

The formula I am sharing suggests that in order to be considered an interesting person, all it takes is for you to become interested in the other person's story. This may come across as a blinding flash of the obvious, but it has been my observation over many years that few people have mastered this relationship building technique.

I think you will soon understand what I'm talking about, and hopefully, as a result of today's episode, you will soon become a more interesting person.

I was having trouble deciding what message I wanted to share with you during this week's podcast, when I came up with another true example that happened to me recently.

I was in a conversation with a trusted friend when the he said to me, "I am not supposed to share this information, but I think it would be OK if I share it with you."

I remember, saying, to myself, "If you were supposed to keep this a secret, then you should not be sharing it with me." In any event, I dis not want to embarrass the person, so I listened and made a promise to myself that this information would die right here between my ears. I would not be the conveyer of additional communication as related to this particular topic.

In today's episode, I want to use this example as a reminder to you to never put yourself in a position where you can be considered to be the leak.

Shame on me. I stopped watching this year's World Cup at halftime figurine that Argentina was going to win easily been up to goals to one at the time. Little did I know that this will turn out to be the best World Cup final ever. France scored two goals in the second half forcing the match into overtime. In the overtime. They each scored an additional goal forcing the match into a shootout. It does not get more exciting than this.

Today's lesson reinforced the concept that it is never over until it is over. I figured Argentina had everything under control at the house, and stop watching. I am ashamed of myself. I know better.

Whether you follow soccer or not, today's lesson is important. Don't ever quit on yourself. As long as you decide to show up for work each day, your success is just one goal away. Your future lives entirely in your hands. Don't ever quit on yourself.

This year's World Cup was another example I've trained professionals experiencing the joys of victory and the agony of defeat. But the single difference is that they were out there competing, and we were hiding behind our television sets watching.

In your personal world cup, you are the ones out on the pitch doing everything you can to ensure your personal victory. Don't ever quit on yourself.

In today's episode Mike asked the pointed question, "What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?" If you absolutely knew you were going to win, of course you would. On the flipside however, you guaranteed your chances for failure simply due to the fact that you did not buy a ticket.

Mike challenges his audience this week to begin thinking like your success is going to be a sure thing based on your hard work and preparation. As "happening" entrepreneurs we have a tendency to bounce from idea to idea without seeing any one project through to fruition. This is a common trait of people with our personalities. It is not bad, but it also is not the best behavior if we are seeking a more attrtactive future.

In this episode I will be puting my heart on my sleeve and sharing a current "ah-hah" moment I had as it related to learning how to improve my piano skills.

We must learn to avoid over-reacting to the newest "flavor-of-the-month" and concentrate on seeing our current projects to a logical completion. I think you will enjoy and benefit from today's program.

I open up today's episode reminding you that the next one could be the big one. The next email you send, the next phone call you make, the next sales proposal you write, the next person you meet, all have the potential of changing your life for the better. Since you never know when the next" big one" will arrive, it is in your best interest to be prepared and ready for when it does.

This episode also sheds light on the importance of differentiating yourself from the competition. The good news is that in today's hectic world where more and more people expect favorable results from mimimal effort, differentiating yourself from the competition has become easier than ever before.

Reflect for a moment on today's episode and I think my messages will stimulate your thinking for the better.

Is it jsut me or is our society becoming more rude and less caring than ever before. This week's topic for discussion came as a result from a visit to the local tractor store in upstate New York. A small courtesy demonstrated by the salesman conjured up a memory I have been carrying with me for over 30-years. It involves the importance of making a good last impression. Today's lesson is what I readily classify as a "keeper." You might want to listen to this episode of Mike'd Up Marchev twice.

Welcome to another episode of MIKE'd UP MARCHEV. I was driving to the Albany airport on my way to a speaking assignment I had in Orlando the following day. I was in the car on route around 5 PM Friday evening and that is when I wanted to pass on to my graphic artist the final edits of an advertisement we were working on. I left a voicemail with the edits hoping that I'd have some kind of information back early the following week.

When I parked the car, checked in and went to my gate, those final edits were already completed. It was 5:45 PM on Friday night. And that's when the word relationship came home to roost.

You will be judged on how quickly you return phone calls, emails, and written communications by your clients and prospects. Most everybody I know would've postponed this assignment until after the weekend was completed. After all, it was Friday evening at 5 PM. Apparently, the relationship I have with my graphic artist is fine-tuned and respected at both ends. When I call, I get an immediate response. And that is exactly the reputation you want to establish with your clients starting ASAP.

In today's hectic world where everybody is "trying" to communicate with a lot of others, it has become obvious that this intended communication is failing to materialize. Many of today's communication attempts boil down to lip-service and procrastinating forgetfulness.

And here is where a huge opportunity presents itself for making it easy to differentiate you and your company from the competition.

The answer: Return phone calls promptly. Return emails quickly. Respond to incoming inquiries in a timely fashion.

Take a listen to today's reminder. Then file it in your "KEEPER" file.

In in this weeks episode, Mike shares a back porch conversation he had with a former college fraternity brother from over 50 years ago. The general observation was that most people seek validation and confirmation for their current views from any source available. It seems that fewer people are open to discussion when listening to other people's viewpoints may stimulate their own personal thinking and stance on any one topic. Take a listen to today's episode and you'll see exactly what Mike is talking about.

A second message today involves a recommendation Mike has been making for years. This week I am going to share with you another tactic that worked for me and was also instrumental in building my speaking career. This time, it ocurred in Nahville, TN.

I recently attended a webinar explaining the pros and cons of using Instagram Reels to promote your travel services. The program was well attended and as far as I was concerned, very well presented. I will add however, it will take more than a single hour to internalize the workings of this marketing strategy.

My message (reminder) this week is to not get overly involved with each and every new idea designed to grow your business. Yes, they all "might" work for you. Yes, they all "sound" like they could be the answer you are seeking. Yes, they will take time and focused-effort over time before you begin to see or enjoy any of the benefits.

I do want you to stay on top of what is available to you in the industry, but not at the cost of losing your momentum in doing what already has been proven to work.

The basics will never go out of vogue. Getting people to come to you because they know you, like you and trust you will always represent the formula that pays.

Become aware of your options, but stick to the basics.

In today's episode I want to review the importance of, and the proper use of, what is commonly referred to as a landing page. So as not to confuse the issue, I will keep today's program simple and on point.

A landing page is a single page within one's website whose purpose is to highlight one's interest in any particular topic or destination. By offering additional information on any one particular area of interest, people would go to that particular page and hopefully leave their name and email which would provide you, the salesperson, an opportunity to follow-up professionally over the next few weeks or months.

Where the majority of so-called professional sales people go wrong is that they fail to follow up accordingly once an interested candidate asks for additional information. Lack of follow-up, regardless of the industry, is the number one reason why more people are not more successful in sales. (This is an entirely new subject which can be dealt with at a later time.)

Take a few minutes to listen to today's Miked-Up episode and hopefully you'll become more comfortable with the concept of landing pages.

This week I am going to share the thoughts of my personal mentors on a subject that efects us all. We all become frustrated at times when it comes to selling. There is no way around it. How you mentally deal with the ups and downs will determine how successful you eventually become. 50% of sales people will quit after a single attempt. An additional 25% will quit after two tries at selling. The majority of your sales successes will come after the fifth contact, or attempt. This should support my recommendation to “hang in there” and keep strengthening your position for the incumbent sales opportunity. And never take so-called "rejection" personally. You will be wasting your time if you do.

This happened to me this past week and I wanted to share this lesson with you before it gets washed away in another week of activity.

I was swimming the other day and was reminded of a friend of mine that I've lost contact with over the years. The trigger came when I heard the word Chicago sung during one of my favorite songs. Every time I hear the word Chicago I think of this gentleman, but I usually leave it at that. On this particular day I decided to contact the man that evening. But as you might've guessed, I failed to do so. (Another bogus example of good intentions going south.)

As luck would have it, the very same man contacted me the following day. What resulted was a very enjoyable conversation, and a date scheduled for me to be a guest on his podcast.

My message today should be clear. I know it has happened to you over the years. When you think of somebody out of the blue contact them... sooner rather than later. Beat them to the punch. I honestly believe that when you think of somebody, they are thinking of you at the very same time.

Good intentions are just that ... good intentions. Be the one who makes the first move and you'll be glad you did.

Nearly 24 years ago I happened upon a percentage that cleared up much of the competitive uncertainty when it came to winning a Gold Medal in The Olympics.

I analyzed the times between a gold medal winner and a skier finishing in 17th place. The differential was a real eye-opener. 1.6% was all that separated first from way back there.

Yesterday I computed another set of numbers and within a few percentage points arrived at the same conclusion. When it comes to accomplished and finely-tuned competitors very little separates one from another. Dare I say .100 of a second in many instances.

Today's abbreviated message reminds us to stop, pause and listen to what others have to say. Mike references a Buffalo Springfield tune from the 60's titled "FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH."

He cites a phrase that says, "Everybody is carrying signs saying hooray for our side."  This clearly infers that people are solely interested in their own opinions and have little patience or interest in changing their minds.

It was true 60 years ago and it is true today. Take a listen and I think it will all make sense.

We can learn a lot by studying how other industries do things. In today's episode Mike shares an example of just 1/30 travel professionals seized an opportunity to learn from a non-competing industry. The common denominator in sales is the fact  that we are working with people. This infers that we can learn and benefit from the experiences of others regardless of their industry.

To paraphrase a quote from Merlin Olsen, "If I am not learning and my competitor is, when we meet, they will beat me." Keep learning. Keep studying. Keep asking others how they do things.,
