This Good Friday episode is an invitation to slow down and unplug. Consider it a personal moment of reflection; a quiet pause to sit with the cross, examine your faith, and turn your attention fully toward Jesus. Before rushing to the empty tomb, we take time to remain at the foot of the cross and ask what it truly means to follow a crucified King.

Is God still working when life feels delayed?
In the final episode of The In-Between, Steven explores one of the most powerful truths of the Christian walk: God provides according to His perfect timing; His Kairos, not our calendar. When doors stay closed, opportunities take longer than expected, and life feels stuck, it’s easy to believe that nothing is happening. But Scripture tells a very different story.
This episode dives deep into what it means to trust God’s timing, embrace your purpose while you wait, and understand that a delay is not a denial. Steven shares personal reflections from his own season of unemployment, highlighting how God provides peace, clarity, strength, and direction long before circumstances shift.
Through key passages like Galatians 6:9, Ecclesiastes 3:11, Philippians 1:6, and Isaiah 60:22, this conversation anchors listeners in the hope that God is always working behind the scenes, preparing, shaping, and positioning us for the right moment.
🔹 In this episode you’ll learn:
• The difference between Chronos (our timing) and Kairos (God’s timing)
• Why delays in life don’t mean God has denied your purpose
• How to recognize God’s provision in subtle, everyday ways
• What it means to live with purpose even in seasons of uncertainty
• A practical way to track God’s faithfulness while you wait
If you’re navigating uncertainty, waiting for a breakthrough, or wondering how God is using this season of your life, this episode will remind you that your story is not on pause, you are being prepared for the appointed time.

What do you do when you’ve prayed, applied, waited… and still nothing changes?
In Episode 3 of The In-Between, Steven explores one of the hardest parts of any transition: the long, silent season of waiting. When job applications go unanswered, opportunities stall, and doors stay closed, it’s easy to wonder if God sees you... or if He’s still working at all.
This episode takes an honest look at the emotional and spiritual challenges of waiting, especially during unemployment or major life uncertainty. Drawing from powerful Scriptures like Isaiah 40:31, Psalm 27:13–14, Lamentations 3:22–23, and Romans 5:3–5, Steven unpacks how God uses the wilderness not to punish us, but to prepare us.
🔹 In this episode you’ll learn:
• Why waiting seasons feel so heavy and why they matter
• What the Bible teaches about patience, perseverance, and spiritual growth
• How God strengthens us in the waiting, not just after
• Practical ways to stay grounded when hope feels distant
• How to trust God when it seems like nothing is happening
If you’re feeling stuck, discouraged, overlooked, or spiritually drained during a long season of waiting, this episode will remind you that you’re not forgotten—God is working even in the silence.

What happens when the role you’ve held for years suddenly disappears?
In Episode 2 of The In-Between, Steven opens up about the internal struggle that follows job loss; the battle for identity. When your daily work, creative output, or leadership role is stripped away, it’s easy to wonder: Who am I now? Do I still matter?
This honest, hope-filled conversation explores why losing a job hits so hard at the soul level and how God uses seasons of transition to rebuild our identity on something unshakeable. Through foundational Scriptures like Ephesians 2:10, Colossians 3:3, Psalm 23:1, and John 15:5, Steven reveals how your worth is rooted in who God says you are, not what you produce.
🔹 In this episode you’ll learn:
• Why unemployment often triggers an identity crisis
• How to rediscover who you are beyond your job or title
• What the Bible teaches about identity, purpose, and worth
• How God uses transitions to dismantle false identities
• A practical way to rebuild your identity with Scripture
If you’re dealing with job loss, career uncertainty, burnout, or feelings of inadequacy, this episode will remind you that your identity is secure—even when your circumstances are not.

Most of us have been taught to clean ourselves up before we come to God. But Psalm 51:17 flips that idea on its head: “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
In this raw and honest episode, we dive deep into what it really means to come to God not with performance, perfection, or spiritual polish, but with brokenness. God isn’t moved by your highlight reel. He’s drawn to the place where your heart is crushed, humbled, and fully surrendered.
We’ll confront the lies of fake strength, tear off the spiritual masks, and rediscover the beauty of repentance, restoration, and real relationship with God. If you’ve been feeling stuck, dry, or ashamed, this episode is a call to come back. And the way back… is brokenness.
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. This podcast is here to walk with you, challenge you, and encourage you to go further than you’ve ever gone in your faith. You were made for the deep… and the deep is calling.

Romans 13:11–12 tells us the time is short and the day of salvation is nearer than ever. Yet too many of us are sleepwalking through our faith; going through the motions, saying the right words, even serving in church, but disconnected from God’s presence and purpose.
In this episode, we unpack Paul’s urgent call to wake up and live with spiritual alertness. We’ll talk about the subtle dangers of spiritual drowsiness, how believers can look alive on the outside but be asleep on the inside, and why Jesus warned His followers to stay awake because His return will be sudden.
This isn’t about panic or fear, it’s about urgency rooted in gratitude. You’ll be challenged to cast off the darkness, put on the armor of light, and stop delaying obedience. Because tomorrow isn’t promised. The night is almost gone. The day is at hand.
If you’re tired of shallow, autopilot faith, this episode is your wake-up call.
Key Takeaways:
The alarm is ringing. Don’t hit snooze. Wake up. Live ready. Go deeper.

In this episode, we reflect on a powerful quote by the late pastor and author Tim Keller:
“The real Jesus requires more than you ever thought, but offers more than you ever imagined.”
Too often, we settle for a comfortable, convenient version of Jesus; a Savior who fits into our schedule but doesn’t disrupt our lives. But the real Jesus isn’t just looking to inspire us, He wants to transform us.
This episode invites you to go deeper in your faith, to surrender more fully, and to receive the unimaginable beauty of a life centered on Christ. We’ll explore what Jesus truly requires of us and the far greater reward He promises. If you've ever felt like there must be more to your walk with God, this is your call to step into it.
Scripture highlights: Luke 9:23, Colossians 1:17, Romans 12:2, John 10:10, 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 Corinthians 2:9, Psalm 16:11

In this episode of the Go Deeper series, we unpack one of Jesus’ most challenging and liberating commands:
“Seek first the Kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33).
Too many believers are stuck in shallow faith, chasing peace while clinging to control. But Jesus offers a better way, a deeper way. This message isn’t about tweaking your priorities. It’s about flipping the entire order of your life around God's rule and reign.
We’ll explore how seeking God first transforms your desires, kills anxiety, and leads to true Kingdom purpose. We’ll connect this powerful teaching with 1 Chronicles 16:11 (“Seek His presence continually”) and Psalm 37:4 (“Delight yourself in the Lord...”), reminding us that joy, peace, and provision flow after surrender, not before.
If you’re tired of half-hearted Christianity and hungry to go deeper, this episode will challenge, convict, and call you into something real.
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. Do you ever catch yourself trying to make sense of God? Expecting Him to move the way you would, think the way you think, or fit neatly into your logic? This episode will challenge all of that.
God isn’t just bigger than you, He’s entirely “other.” Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us that His thoughts and ways are far beyond anything we could imagine. In this powerful, extended message, we confront the dangerous trend of shrinking God down to human terms, and rediscover the awe, reverence, and wonder we were made for.
This is a wake-up call to leave behind shallow faith and worship the untamable, holy, all-powerful God who invites us to know Him, not figure Him out.
This episode will help you:
If you’re ready to stop playing it safe with your faith and start worshipping God as He truly is, this message is for you.
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. Not because of self-effort, but because the Spirit of God transforms you from the inside out. Glory to glory. Light pushing back darkness. True change, not cosmetic religion.

In this raw and powerful episode, we dive deep into James 1:2–4 and uncover the beauty and purpose hidden in life’s hardest moments. Trials are not setbacks, they’re setups for spiritual strength, endurance, and maturity. God doesn’t waste your pain; He uses it to forge perseverance and refine your faith.
We’ll challenge the shallow theology that says, “If it’s hard, God must not be in it,” and embrace the deep truth that real growth happens in the fire. From Job to Jesus, Scripture is clear: suffering is not the enemy of faith, it’s the proving ground of it.
If you’re in a storm, walking through fire, or simply hungry to grow deeper in your walk with God, this message will speak straight to your soul. Don’t run from the pressure, let it push you into deeper trust, deeper surrender, and deeper transformation.

“You are the salt of the earth…” but what happens when the salt loses its flavor? In this powerful episode, we unpack Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:13 and confront a growing problem in the Church today: truth that’s been sugarcoated until it loses its power.
Jesus didn’t call His followers to be sweet, safe, or soft. He called us to be salt—preserving truth, provoking thirst for righteousness, and stinging where healing is needed. But in a culture obsessed with comfort and approval, too many believers have traded boldness for popularity and conviction for convenience.
In this conversation, we tackle:
If you’ve ever felt the tension between grace and truth, or wondered how to speak boldly without becoming harsh, this episode is your wake-up call. Salt that’s lost its saltiness is worthless, don’t let that be your faith.
Key Challenge:
Are you preserving the truth or sugarcoating it to keep the peace?
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. This podcast is here to walk with you, challenge you, and encourage you to go further than you’ve ever gone in your faith. You were made for the deep… and the deep is calling.

Why do we wait until we’re drowning to pray? Why do we treat prayer like a last resort instead of our first response? In this episode, we dive into Philippians 4:6–7, where Paul reminds us to bring everything to God, not just our panic, but our daily lives, our quiet concerns, our gratitude, and our trust.
Prayer isn’t just for emergencies. It’s the lifeline that keeps us anchored in peace long before the storm hits. When we make consistent, honest prayer a part of our daily walk, we stop living in reaction mode and start living in the security of God’s presence.
If you’ve been treating prayer like a 911 call, this episode is your invitation to something deeper. Let’s talk about building a lifestyle of communion with God that brings peace, power, and stability, no matter what comes.
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. What if worship isn’t just something you do, but something you live?
In this powerful episode, we dive deep into Jesus’ words in John 4:23–24 and uncover what it really means to worship God “in spirit and in truth.” This wasn’t a casual conversation, it was a scandalous moment of divine revelation with a broken, outcast Samaritan woman. And it still speaks to us today.
We explore how worship is so much more than singing a few songs at church. It’s a heart posture. A lifestyle. A daily response to who God is, His holiness, His mercy, His power, and His relentless love.
You’ll be challenged to see worship not as an event, but as a way of life. Whether it’s through prayer, praise, service, or simple acts of obedience, every moment can glorify God when done in reverence and truth.
This episode is an invitation to go deeper. To tear down the walls of performance-based religion. And to live a life that worships God in every breath.
Key Scripture: John 4:23–24
Plus supporting Scriptures from Romans 12, Hebrews 13, Psalm 95, and more.
Don’t just sing louder, live surrendered.
This is what true worship looks like.
(Side note; if you haven't seen The Chosen, you really need to check it out!)

You were made for more than shallow faith.
In this episode, we dive deep into the truth that every believer is called beyond surface-level Christianity into a life marked by purpose, transformation, and intimacy with God. You were created with a spiritual hunger; a longing that nothing in this world can truly satisfy. That hunger is not a flaw; it's a divine invitation. Only God can fill the ache in your soul and lead you into the fullness of life He intended.
The shallow end can't hold a soul created for the deep. If you're tired of going through the motions, if you're restless for more, this episode is your invitation to step into deeper waters. We’re talking bold truth, because real faith costs something, and it’s worth everything.
You were made for more, and the more starts now.
If this stirred something in you, if you’re ready to leave behind the shallows and pursue the deep things of God, then keep coming back. This podcast is here to walk with you, challenge you, and encourage you to go further than you’ve ever gone in your faith. You were made for the deep… and the deep is calling.

After a long and necessary pause, I’m stepping back behind the mic to share the story of where I’ve been, why I stepped away, and why I believe God is calling us to go deeper than ever before. In this personal and raw episode, I open up about the soul-level wall I hit, the podcast that changed me, and the growing conviction that modern Christianity has settled for shallow.
This is not a return to “business as usual.” It’s a relaunch with purpose. Not to build an audience, but to build a community of believers hungry for more. More depth. More truth. More of God.
If you’re tired of surface-level faith, if you know there’s something deeper God is inviting you into, this episode is for you.
👉 I’d love to hear your story too. Email me at steven@nookpodcast.com.

This episode is one that will touch your soul in a profound way. We’re talking about something we don’t often discuss but something that affects us all—walking with people through their final moments on this side of eternity.
Our guest today is William Sofield; a man with a calling as tender as it is powerful. He serves as a hospice chaplain, ministering to those who are facing the end of their earthly journey and offering comfort to families in their most vulnerable moments. With grace, compassion, and a deep reliance on the Lord, he brings the presence of Christ into some of life’s heaviest spaces.
In this conversation, we’ll explore what it means to bring hope where there is sorrow, light where there is darkness, and faith where questions abound. You’ll hear incredible stories of God’s presence in the final chapters of life and be reminded that even in our hardest moments, we are never alone.
Check out William's podcast, The Hopper.

In this episode, I talk through some reasoning as to why regular, deep bible study is so much more effective than quick, "bible verse of the day" thinking.
Scriptures mentioned:
Colossians 2:6-7
Psalm 119:11
Hebrews 5:12-14
1 Peter 3:15
Ephesians 3:12-14

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

This was a tough one, but I knew that it was a topic that should be addressed. The extremes of mental health issues are difficult to talk about, but still important.
Amie Patrick's husband took his own life after years of depression. She has arrived at a point of great healing and spoke in great detail with me in a previous episode. I invite you to listen to that conversation in its entirety. Amie has experienced a level of renewal that few get to. She has my thanks and respect.

In this episode, I have the honor of speaking with Clint Zeller; the former pastor of Grace Life Church in Magnolia, Texas.
In July of 2023, Clint and his wife, Laura, made the decision that might have seemed puzzling to some, perhaps even disheartening. They made the difficult choice to close the doors of their church a place where the community gathered, worshiped, and served.
"Why would they do this?" Some may ask. Was it a lack of faith, a failure, or a defeat? Not at all. It was a decision made in obedience to what they believe God was calling them to do. It was a challenging and prayerful process—one that involved seeking wisdom and discernment in every step.
Closing the doors of Grace Life was not about giving up or walking away. It was about embracing the unknown, about trusting in a higher plan that is beyond our human understanding. It was about being open to the next chapter, whatever that might be.
Clint's last sermon is HERE

He has worked with the Newsboys, Big Daddy Weave, and Jason Gray... but he will be the first to tell you that none of that is what motivates him to do what he does; he wants to point people to Christ through music but never get so caught up in the music business that he might lose sight of his primary motivation.
After actively touring with the band for many years, Ben and his wife agreed that it was time to give up living out of a suitcase and get re-anchored at home to raise their 3 kids.

For five long years, she found herself ensnared in an extramarital affair that threatened to shatter her life and the lives of those she loved most. But through the grace of God and her unyielding faith, she found redemption and renewal, reminding us all that there is hope and healing, even in the darkest of circumstances.
In this episode, we'll explore the powerful story of Brenna Naufel, who will share with us the profound lessons she learned as she navigated the treacherous path of infidelity and ultimately found her way back to faith, forgiveness, and love.
Core verse for this series:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

In this, the final episode of season 4, we will take a look at an important aspect of faith in Christ; rest and renewal.
God knew that we would need physical, emotional, and spiritual rest. He understood that our bodies and minds require renewal to function at their best. Yet in our modern society, we often neglect this sacred rhythm of busyness, striving, and the pursuit of success.
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
–Matthew 11:28-30
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
–Psalm 23:2-3
Behold, I am making all things new.
–Revelation 21:5

For this inaugural run , I have the honor of introducing you to Spencer Boliou. He's a producer/performer of some of my favorite music. We discuss his creative evolution from a young kid who dabbled in music to a man who loves God and wants to use his talent to honor God with such good music.

In this episode, I sit down with Mike and Erin together to discuss where they are in the healing journey. The conversation covers a great deal of how they are working together on a daily basis to restore their fractured marriage.
This episode concludes the 4-part series about the effects of pornography on one person, a marriage, and an extended group of friends and family.
Pornography may seem harmless, but it can have a significant impact on our mental health, relationships, and faith. It's important that we acknowledge the dangers and work towards having a heart that seeks God holistically; being truthful with ourselves and vulnerable with trusted friends and family.

There are two sides to every story, each as important as the other. In this episode, you will meet Erin, Mike's wife.
The beginning of dating and then marriage and adding children to the mix were mostly normal for the pair; they would look like a nice family you know from church. However, there was a side of Mike that Erin knew nothing about. Even after asking him on multiple occasions if he ever struggled with pornography and him denying it, she had no idea.

Statistics show that nearly 70% of 10 men and 25% of women struggle with an addiction to pornography.
Those are difficult numbers to consider… and sadly, those statistics don’t change much when it comes to those who claim a faith in Christ.
In this series, I will introduce you to Mike, a man whose porn addiction began in high school, and his wife, Erin… who had been led to believe that her husband didn’t have this problem.
To begin this series, we hear from Mike. He shares about how his first exposure to porn as a young boy was a catalyst to full addiction as a teen. Convinced that it was just a phase that he would grow out of, he could not have imagined how difficult it would be to stop, or how devastating his confession would be for his wife.

Welcome to The Nook Podcast, where we explore stories of faith, hope, and redemption. In this episode, we are joined by Michael Ray Lewis. Michael grew up as an Atheist and his disbelief in God continued until the age of 26 when his wife told him she felt like Jesus was calling her back. Michael began asking questions about science and evolution that were difficult for many Christians to answer. However, digging deeper, he found out about Christian Apologetics and resources offering evidences for God’s existence.
Michael also shares information about a film he is currently producing, titled Universe Designed. This is a documentary that will explore some of the evidences for God’s existence. With interviews from some of the world’s top Christian apologists, such as Dr. Frank Turek and Dr. Hugh Ross, this film will present a few of Christianity’s best arguments. As a former atheist, director Michael Ray Lewis has since discovered these evidences and given his life to Jesus. This has compelled Michael to share the information he has discovered with the world.
Check out the trailer for Universe Designed.

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.

In this episode, I get to share a conversation I had with Mack Brock while we were working at a conference together recently.
Brock’s greatest passion is to lead people into a heightened awareness of the presence of God and to see individuals experience the breakthrough God has for them through worship. Having spent the past 15 years paving the landscape of modern worship, Brock has co-written some of the biggest songs in today's church, including “O Come To The Altar,” “Resurrecting,” “Here As In Heaven,” and “Do It Again,” all landing in the Top 100 on CCLI.
Mack's song, The Best is Yet to Come, is featured at the end of this interview.
For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

We all carry places of anxiety, shame, and fear. But what if, instead of trying to control or squash what feels broken in us, we invited God to meet us there?
This is holy vulnerability: offering our wounds to our Father so he can love us there.
With pastoral tenderness, Kellye Fabian shines a light on the path into holy vulnerability: six unexpected spiritual practices that open us to God’s healing and transformation. Holy Vulnerability helps us notice where brokenness is leaking into our lives and then leads us into surrender, common prayer, encouragement, laughter, community, and tangible engagement with creation to find how God mends us with his presence.
As we intentionally seek God in our ache―as we step out in holy vulnerability―he will meet us there. And we will be changed.

In this new series, we will be looking at how we can make worshiping God a greater priority in our lives, understanding what it means and, why we should do it every day.
Kicking things off, I get to introduce you to Jen Smale; she is a worship leader at 29:11 Church in Tempe, Arizona as well as a co-host of the Worship Leader Probs podcast. We discuss how to model worship for our own cultures and what we should know about the people leading worship at our own churches.
But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

This episode marks the beginning of a 5 week series called, Prepare.
Throughout this time, we take a slightly different look at the birth of Jesus Christ and how we might prepare for him to have a greater place in each of our lives.
I hope that you have some time to pause and reflect on some of the most incredible truths that I think we tend to blow by when we get so busy and so much can feel predictable. May they serve as a reminder as to why God can be trusted and how a long line of events leading up to and beyond the birth of Christ should mean more to us than we could ever imagine.

25 One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
27 The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”[a]
28 “Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”
29 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Parable of the Good Samaritan
30 Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.
31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant[b] walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.
33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins,[c] telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’
36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.
37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”
Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

On this episode, I get to speak with my friend, Tim Shelton from Seek Well about the process of getting quiet and really seeking God to hear his unique voice.
Let this conversation serve as a reminder that prayer is a two-way street; we can talk to God AND he wants to speak to us... but what does that even mean, and how does it work?
Your own ears will hear him.
Right behind you a voice will say,
“This is the way you should go,”
whether to the right or to the left.

Have you ever been in the middle of an incredibly difficult situation when it felt like you couldn't even put your deepest thoughts into prayer... when God seems so distant from where you are that you cannot form the words to cry out to him?
In this episode, I have the honor of introducing you to Chris and Stephanie Teague; they are a music duo from Nashville, TN. Their's is a story that may surprise you. They started as high school sweethearts, married while in college, and began what seemed to be a normal life as a young newlywed couple. But just a couple short years in, Chris' faith began to fade and sadly, that led to the couple divorcing.
BUT GOD
Thankfully, the story didn't end there... and in this show, you will hear an amazing story of redemption.
Check out music from Out Of The Dust on Spotify and Apple MusicAnd he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

How is your prayer life? That is the question that we will be looking at for the month of October in a series I'm calling, "I Suck at Prayer".
This episode has a mix of things:
If you want to go deeper in your relationship with God by improving your prayer life, make a commitment to being here for this entire series... and invite a friend to join you!
"Our prayers may be awkward. Our attempts may be feeble. But since the power of prayer is in the one who hears it and not in the one who says it, our prayers do make a difference."

In this episode, I get to share a most interesting story… one that you may have a hard time believing. Life for Ashley Lagos started fairly normal. From all appearances, she was just a good kid from a good family in a small town. She grew up in church and her parents were involved in music and youth ministry. But things started to take a turn when she was just 4 years old.
*Parental Warning: The subject matter in this episode is of an adult nature. There are some aspects of this story that might be a bit much for younger ears. Listener discretion is advised.

As a follow up to the series about regular bible reading, I will be bringing a series of shows all about prayer...
If you struggle with prayer, I hope that you learn along with me as we dive into this topic!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Direct your children onto the right path,
and when they are older, they will not leave it.
–Proverbs 22:6
My guest in this episode, Amber Newman, talks about why scripture means so much to her and why she feels so passionate about teaching her children about the bible; talking to them at their level of understanding and being consistent.
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Based on 1 Timothy 1:12-14
Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
–Romans 2:4
Though we are overwhelmed by our sins, you forgive them all.
–Psalm 65:3
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.

In this episode, we take a look at suffering and what it looks like in God's eyes.
Today's guest, Paul Granger, host of the Where Did You See God podcast, and I discuss suffering in a biblical context.
suf·fer·ing
/ˈsəf(ə)riNG/
nounthe state of undergoing pain, distress, or hardship.
Nothing about that description sounds like anything that any of us would ever seek and yet, it's a thing we all have dealt with, and may very well have to deal with again.
My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.
–Psalm 119:71
...knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
–Romans 5:3-5

In this episode, we take a look at the increasing percentage of depression and other mental health issues in teenagers.
Depression has become increasingly common among American teenagers – especially teen girls, who are now almost three times as likely as teen boys to have had recent experiences with depression.
In 2017, 13% of U.S. teens ages 12 to 17 (or 3.2 million) said they had experienced at least one major depressive episode in the past year, up from 8% (or 2 million) in 2007, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

In this episode we take a hard look at postpartum depression and how it can wreak havoc on a new mother. My friend Amanda Bjornson dealt with this brutal condition twice and gives some amazing insight for mother's and fathers alike.
Postpartum depression is linked to chemical, social, and psychological changes that happen when having a baby. The term describes a range of physical and emotional changes that many new mothers experience. PPD can be treated with medication and counseling.
Interesting facts:
Those who develop postpartum depression are at greater risk of developing major depression later on in life.
Symptoms might include insomnia, loss of appetite, intense irritability, and difficulty bonding with the baby.
Untreated, the condition may last months or longer. Treatment can include counseling, antidepressants, or hormone therapy.

As we continue in this series, The June Gloom, talking about various aspect of depression and how people deal with it... it is my honor to introduce you to Diana Gruver. She is the author of Companions in the Darkness; Seven Saints Who Struggled with Depression and Doubt.
In Companions in the Darkness, Diana looks back into church history and finds depression in the lives of some of our most beloved saints, including Martin Luther, Charles Spurgeon, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. Without trying to diagnose these figures from a distance, Gruver tells their stories in fresh ways, taking from each a particular lesson that can encourage or guide those who suffer today. Drawing on her own experience with depression, Gruver offers a wealth of practical wisdom both for those in the darkness and those who care for them.

There are so many people who operate in relative obscurity, and unless you sit through the credits at the end of a film or TV show, you might never know that they exist. These are some of the people that I naturally gravitate towards. Having worked in the television industry for more than 30 years, I am very familiar with their roles and hard work. Justen Overlander is one such individual; he has been working in film and television for many years, most notably with the amazingly successful series, The Chosen.

In this episode, Tim Shelton from Seek Well returns to the show to talk about how our rhythms with God, spending time with God in the Word, and being intentional are so critical for a healthy relationship with Jesus. In this episode, I have gathered a small group of friends to discuss our own experiences in bible study habits. None of us claim to be an expert in this area; we're just people who love God and want to know him more. It's a good conversation that will encourage you to go deeper in your own pursuit of Jesus.

Justin and Jennifer Camp are passionate about helping busy, modern men and women find ways to connect with God. With honest teaching about who He is and who we are, they try to write and create things that are beautiful and stirring, yet stripped-down and unpretentious.

In this episode, we meet Scott Wood; he's a husband, father, and photographer from Bentonville, AR. A random, one-time panic attack sent him to the hospital more than 20 years ago. As this podcast has come together over the past year, I have met some incredible people and had some amazing conversations that I hope have added value to my growing audience.
The full conversation was originally released on March 22, 2021. My friend Trey spoke so candidly about a season of hurt and loss in his family that I hope will encourage you.
Trey Van Camp is a church planter in Phoenix, AZ -
He's also a husband, father of 3 beautiful girls, and he pours concrete to make ends meet. Being a young pastor in a new church is something he knew was in his future from the time he was 12 years old. He will be the first to tell you that he still has so much to learn but he is in it for the long haul.

The world has been in upheaval for the better part of two years and that leaves many of us who consider ourselves as followers of Christ wondering what our faith looks like in the current climate.
This episode features Pastor Josh Earls from Faith Community Church in House Springs, MO and Kyle Tilley, a marketing specialist in St. Louis, MO. Heading into the Christmas season, we are batting around the question, "How relevant is Jesus in the now?" and how do we live our lives in such a way that makes our faith appealing to others?

In this episode, I reached out to my high school photography teacher for a conversation; a man who had a huge impact on who I am and what I do to this day. His influence in my life went far beyond text books and lesson plans and it was an honor to sit down with him to reminisce about the old days. This is more than just a conversation; it's a lesson in gratitude at a time when gratitude is running a little thin.

In this episode, you will meet Josh Roberie. He started life as a kid who loved God so much that he was, quite literally, in church every time the doors opened. That continued into high school and college.
After taking a position at his church as the youth pastor, he started to feel the affects of that constant pull to be involved and be present at everything that was happening at the church, and the more he was there, the less he was present for his family... and something had to change.

Starting things off with my friend, Brad Klassen. He's the pastor of Copper Hills Church in Peoria, Arizona. Brad was actually born and raised in Canada and had a successful career in construction and building materials before making a big shift into pastoral ministry. He and his wife, Elfie, have been leading Copper Hills since 1997.

Heads-up: Sensitive topics and sounds are featured in this episode.
Motivated by what he had seen in movies, a mentor, and ultimately the attack on September 11, 2001, Travis enlisted in the Unites States Marines in September of 2002. He dutifully trained and fought fully aware that he may have to give up his life in service of his country. While this fulfilled the aspirations of a much younger man, he had no idea about the traumas that lie ahead of him.

"Pastors Are People Too".
Kicking it off is my friend, Josh Earls. He's the Lead Pastor of Faith Family Church in House Springs, MO, a church with long roots in the community, having been founded in 1965. Josh took the reins just 7 years ago and in some ways is still just getting started. I think you will enjoy his honest, candid ways of approaching how he leads and serves his people.

I have been so fortunate to meet such fascinating people over the years and now I get to introduce them to others via this podcast. One such person is Naeem Fazal. As the title of this episode depicts, Naeem was raised Muslim while growing up in Pakistan. He came to the United States in 1992 after the Gulf War. That same year, Naeem had a supernatural experience with Christ that changed the course of his life. I hope you enjoy hearing portions of that story straight from him in this episode.

If you have never seen any of the I Am Second short films, you are missing out! I Am Second is about story; real stories of life transformation that happens by putting God first and living second.
Joining me for this episode is the Executive Director, Mike Jorgensen. He has such great insights into the short films that have had such a wide appeal, but the accompanying resources as well.
From their website:
It all began as an experiment. We wanted to challenge the status-quo in people’s lives in one city, our hometown of Dallas. So in 2008, we launched as a local nonprofit aiming to reach our city with the stories of a different kind of life.
At the time, the steep rise in online video content was just beginning to gain traction. We joined that early movement with a unique message of our own through a series of 20 short films. Each film captured the true and authentic story of an individual whose life had been changed. At the end of every story, the person summarized their new life with one singular statement:
“I Am Second”

The most unique aspect of The Short Creek Dream Center located in Hildale, Utah is that it is actually housed in the former home of convicted FLDS cult leader, Warren Jeffs. While Jeffs has been in prison for many years now, his acts of mental and sexual abuse over the entire area have left a mark on that region that will take decades to repair.
Enter my guests for this episode, Luke and Konstance Merideth. They co-lead the efforts in running the Short Creek Dream Center as a place where those who were left with such deep wounds can find all new hope. They both have such amazing stories of personal redemption that now motivate them to offer that same redemption to others.

One aspect of real wisdom is the understanding that you still have so much to learn. As a follower of Christ, I am more than a little embarrassed that I have just recently started a real concerted effort to read the bible on a daily basis. Like so many other things, it wasn't easy getting started, but now it is a good habit that I so enjoy!
Does it seem like getting to know God is just too hard? Does so much of the bible just seem to go over your head? You are not alone. This is a great discussion designed to encourage you to get started right where you are... and maybe more importantly, to not beat yourself up if it doesn't go perfectly.
Rob Chagdes is a pastor, author, and podcast producer. He's also a husband and father of 3... but beyond all that, he's a guy who loves God and has some great insights on how to find your own rhythm in reading the bible and getting the most out of it.

Ray De La Nuez grew up with the understanding that manhood was based on notching countless, meaningless encounters with women and a carefree party lifestyle. It wasn't until he had a near panic attack on a San Diego beach that he realized in a moment that his trajectory was going nowhere.
He knew he needed God, even though he had no idea what that looked like at the time.
While he will be the first to tell you that he has not mastered it yet, he strives to live in the calling to be all that God wants him to be... and to help other men find that same fulfillment.

It has been said that marriage is the hardest job you may ever have; to stay with it takes work, patience, and endless grace.
Seth and Melanie Studley have been through the fire with some immense marital challenges. But rather than give up and walk away, they chose to show up, own their own messes, and do the hard work necessary to have a great marriage. They will be the first to tell you that they are far from perfect on this topic, but they have chosen to make helping others with their marriages a passion. They have a no-holds-barred approach that cuts through the crud and gets down to the real stuff we all deal with.

21 years ago, my guest, Pat Bradley visited South Sudan, Africa, it left and indelible mark on him and he knew that the extreme needs he saw there needed attention.
What started as a program to provide 2 pound bags of rice to hungry people has now become taking care of hundreds in 11 countries. Beyond that, his organization, Crisis Aid, has set up a special pediatric malnutrition clinic in Eastern Africa and a home for women rescued from human trafficking.
I challenge you to find a more giving and humble person in your lifetime.

While mental health is mentioned with more frequency these days, I'm becoming more convinced that a mere awareness of anxiety, depression, and the effects isn't enough. All too often, we look the other way when it comes to having tough conversations with friends and family who seem to be on a downward spiral.
Add a global pandemic to the mix of an already stressed out world and the isolation and panic that came with it just seems to escalate things all the more.
My guest, Chad Daniel, has been reaching out to young people for nearly 30 years; teaching them that their lives are worth living, no matter what. His passion for Jesus and the hurting is contagious.

The country of Israel is an amazing place to visit; I went in 2017 and it really gave me a whole new perspective on the bible. It gave me an awareness beyond what I had expected.
I came across some great videoslast year that were so good at giving insights into the connections between various locations in Israel and the scriptures. One of the hosts in those videos is Kayla Sprague; I believe that you will enjoy hearing some of her story and how she got involved with FIRM, The Fellowship of Israel Related Ministries. Her passion for the people of Israel is inspiring!

Christian ministry is not for the faint of heart; no matter what aspect people work in, there will be unthinkable challenges. Ask anyone who has ever volunteered at their church or been on a church or para-church staff about their time spent and you will likely find stories of personal challenges, misunderstandings, and burnout.
My guest today has lived in all of that and then some. But rather than walk away from her faith, as so many others have done, Brandy Verner chose to do something incredibly positive and start an organization that will work to restore people who have been through the roughest things in ministry.

It seems that there is rarely a shortage of voices that want to motivate you or pump you up. What you will find in Justin Keller is an encouraging voice that comes from some adversity; but rather than dwell on that adversity he views the hardships as luxuries, choosing to learn from the hard times instead of getting stuck in them.

I have worked in and around all-things-television since 1988... and in doing so, I have a natural affinity for those who work in any aspect of TV. My guest for this episode is long-time TV host, reporter, and anchor, Andrea Robinson. She started at Fox10 in Phoenix, Arizona as an intern just out of college and then spent the next 14+ years as a traffic reporter, feature reporter, and ultimately, a host of one of the most successful TV morning shows in Phoenix's history.
In this conversation, Andrea gives some deep insights into the demands of raising a family while maintaining a work schedule that would be a huge challenge for any of us.

I have been blessed to meet and work with some amazing people over the years. Neal Hopson is one such individual. He's a radio disc jockey, choreographer, and an emcee, as well as a husband and father. He's not only a multi-faceted professional, he's a deep thinker and a life long learner.
Neal has a deep understanding of who he is and what a great responsibility he has with his voice and presence on a radio station with great reach, not only in his home market of St. Louis, Missouri, but also streaming around the world.

I think we can all agree that many of our personal relationships can lack a certain depth, especially when we get into a discussion of real discipleship; realizing that we could benefit from spending time with people who can ask us the hard questions.
My guest in the Episode is Tracy Sullivan. Her book, Small Batch Discipleship, is a great read for those looking to take relationships to a whole new level.
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

When I was a kid, I won a free album on a radio call in contest. I got to visit the radio station to pick up my prize and seeing all of the technical gear and feeling the atmosphere there made me want to be a radio DJ so badly! Obviously, my career path went a different direction, but it still lives on in the form of this podcast.
In this episode, we meet Dan Arthur; he and his wife, Michelle, are the morning team at nationally syndicated Air1 Radio. This is a great conversation!

In this episode, you are invited to be in a quiet place and contemplate all that Jesus endured on that eventful Friday. There are moments built in to give you time to process what you are hearing.

When you are facing a very dark time, the most important thing to remember is to keep walking.
Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me.

Imagine seeing a life-long dream come to life... maybe it has happened for you. But just as it was really picking up momentum, it comes to an abrupt halt.
In this episode, you get to meet Katie Peslis; she's got one of the most beautiful singing voices you will ever hear. She had only just begun to do a short tour as a Karen Carpenter tribute singer when all of the Covid madness started and sadly, shut all of that down. You'll appreciate Katie's heart to not let any of that mess up her dreams.

Church planting is not for the faint of heart when everything is normal; mix in a global pandemic at the same time and it takes on a whole new set of stresses. While that may make the task that much more daunting, Neil and Gina Greathouse are still at it.
This episode offers a peek into all of the craziness of starting a church, especially when you have to throw all of your plans out the window and still go for it.

I have worked in the video production, marketing, and advertising industries for a long time and that leaves me very aware of how brands and businesses do their messaging to the masses. Frankly, I'm not a fan of most of today's advertising. (A video explaining more of my thoughts can be seen HERE).
In this episode, I sit down with my friend, Dustin Bryson. He has a ton of experience in marketing and advertising too. We break down what it all means, but more importantly, how each of us, as believers in Christ, have a part to play in making Jesus' name known.

TV News is an interesting world; fast paced, ever-shifting, and moving place to place. Stephanie Smith was working in a big TV market and initially had designs on staying... but that's about the time that God told her that it was time to move on.
He will do that; give you your next move without telling you what's beyond that. While it may seem crazy to some, that is exactly what faith and obedience are all about.

Welcome to The Nook! This is a short but deeper look into what you can expect from this podcast on a weekly basis.
Faith in God is messy and rarely symmetrical or predictable. Most of the time you'll be hearing stories and real insights from my guests who are all still in the process of walking out their own faith. I believe that we can learn so much from each other and lean on each other.
