Direct from Emily, in her own words:

Incarceration InspirationI went to prison on a mission. A mission to change myself and a mission to make a difference. I didn't know how I’d make a difference at the time, but I knew I would find something I cared about that would benefit from a purpose driven face-lift.

Coming to prison as a first-time offender was unnerving, and I felt so much anxiety at first. If you think its hard on the outside to eat a healthy diet, being in prison brings that challenge to the next level. I think most people I shared my time with would attest to the fact that food is often a way to combat anxiety and depression. Maintaining a healthy balance is difficult, and when this poses a challenge to your self image it just makes an already depressing situation worse, like adding insult to injury.

It was only a month or so in when I noticed that some of the women were making their own popcorn recipes with the ingredients possible within the food budget. I was instantly struck by how really smart and creative it was. Popcorn was like this simple blank canvas for women of all backgrounds to express themselves through different mixes of spices and other flavours.

A lot of people love popcorn, and it is cheap to buy and goes a long way. It's also so much healthier than baked goods and most of the junk food that was available in the canteen. It is one of those snacks you can eat a lot of when you feel restless and bored and not feel super guilty about it. It’s also a social snack. You usually make a giant bowl of it for you and your friends to share over some conversation, games or watching something on TV. You can also just eat one kernel at a time, the bowl can last for hours, and you do not have to worry about gaining weight. Well…not as much!

So it all sort of all came together at once: I would start a popcorn company that uses quality ingredients and offers unique flavour, some inspired by the very ones we made inside prison. Most of all, one that attempts to remove some of the stigma associated with having a prior conviction, and one that has fun and a sense of humour about itself. The company can give offenders the opportunity and confidence to gain and maintain pro-social employment, keeping the community safer by helping ex-cons refrain from returning to their old ways. It just seemed like all the stars had aligned and overnight it became my mission to build this company. Comeback Snacks - made with conviction!

Note: Our company used to be called Cons & Kernels, so you may see it referenced in some of the materials below and out there on the internet!

Carol’s artistic focus is the rendering of a contemporary landscape: modern in its simplified, barren approach. The work evokes an abstract and interpretative quality created by the disparity between starkness and hyperrealism, with a specialty in geological forms of Georgian Bay, including Killarney, La Cloche Mountains and the North Channel, Lake Huron.Carol’s love of art and nature nurtured her as she obtained a degree in Science from University of Toronto. However, as a self-taught artist she transformed her career into artistic endeavours and began painting professionally over 15 years ago becoming a full-time artist in 2003. Prior to becoming a painter, she worked prolifically in graphite medium, winning many awards for her work since 1983. Carol’s work can be found in numerous Private and Corporate Collections throughout North America.

Her work has been exhibited in the Art Gallery of Sudbury, The Temiskaming Gallery, and the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake.

Stuart Leggett and Carol Currie started their collaboration as artists in 2000 as CLAUSTRO.

Their work has been exhibited in many group shows such as the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, The One of a Kind Show, The Toronto Art Expo, The La Cloche Country Art Show, Willisville Mountain Project, and the McMichael Gallery Fall Art Exhibition.

In 2017 Luan Lawrenson-Woods was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was absolutely devastated to learn she needed a mastectomy. She had no idea about the different types of reconstruction and didn't know anyone who'd had a reconstruction.

As a result, Luan created a community that supports and empowers women who want to know more about reconstruction after a mastectomy so that they can feel confident in their choices.

"Hearing about reconstruction options gave me hope that I could be 'me' again, and in 2019 I had a DIEP flap reconstruction when tissue was taken from my tummy to reconstruct my breast."

Deciding what reconstruction is right for you can be overwhelming, the medical terminology can be confusing and just plain scary. And lonely. But you're not alone.

Luan talks with leading surgeons about all aspects of reconstruction, including the latest techniques that they're developing to help improve women's quality of life after a mastectomy. As well as healthcare professionals who can help with practical advice to support mental, physical and emotional wellbeing after reconstruction.

Luan also talks to the wonderful women who generously and bravely share their stories to help inspire and raises awareness of life after breast cancer and reconstruction.

Helping women make a holistic, informed decision that's right for them so that they can have a say in how they re-write their story after breast cancer and reconstruction is Luan's mission.

A suicide in your social circle can be jarring. When suicidal ideation hits closer to home, it can change your world.

It happened to TERRY STUART. A senior partner at Deloitte Canada, he had experienced his own challenges with anxiety and depression, but nothing prepared him for the realization that someone he loved was considering ending their life.

Contemplating the traditional, pharmaceutical approach to mental health treatment, Terry came to realize that one thing that had worked for him and others he’d known, was music. Whether it was anxiety or depression, music was always something Terry could use to change his mood and he became convinced that music had the ability heal.

Determined to advance that belief, Terry teamed up with musician, friend, and neighbour Rob Carli, an award-winning Canadian film and television composer, to start the Awesome Music Project, a charitable foundation focused on leveraging the healing power of music to address mental wellness and mental health challenges.

Mat Bowtell is the founder and CEO of Free 3D Hands, an Australian charity that designs and 3D prints hands and assistive devices. The hands are provided for free, to children and adults all around the world and they even pay the postage!

Mat freely shares his designs under an open-source licence so others can make and repair their own devices and to encourage further innovation. Mat's goal is to significantly bring down the cost of assistive technology to help those who currently cannot access or afford it. Mat was working as an engineer for Toyota in Australia and Japan before being made redundant in 2017 when the automotive industry shut down.

He had made one hand, for one kid, with one 3D printer whilst he was still employed. This grew to two printers on the dining table, then six in the spare room! It was not long after his final day at work that Mat was named the Australian of the Year – Vic Local Hero for 2018 and he then knew what he was going to do with his future.

Mat and his very understanding wife Yuka worked for two years as volunteers, living off his redundancy payout, to design and 3D print hands for kids. He relocated with his family to his hometown of Phillip Island and was working out of a single car garage. In 2019 the opportunity arose to lease a factory and through generous support Mat was able to establish Free 3D Hands as registered charity in Australia.

He has now made hundreds of hands and assistive devices for people all around the world. In October 2020 he released his new Kinetic Hand design under an open source licence and to date it has been downloaded over 4000* times!

There are over a billion people in the world who require some form of assistive technology and this number is set to double by 2030. Currently only 1 in 10 people have access to the products they need. Mat believes that by openly sharing technology and ideas and by collaborating with others, more people will be able to access or afford the technology they need.

Deborah's life has two parts: the first in Canada, where she grew up, and the second in Connecticut, where she lives with three children, two doodles, and one husband. Both places feel like home for her, and in both she's been lucky enough to pursue her passion: story-telling.

Back in Toronto, Deb attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. She penned the travel column for a national newspaper before working in public relations, liaising with press, foreign diplomats, corporate investors and the public.

Since relocating to Connecticut, Deb's been published in local and national media, both as a director at a strategic communications firm and as a freelance writer. Her work has appeared in everything from websites to poetry journals.

Afters years of aching to see a title of her own on the shelf, THE CRATE, was born. THE CRATE is a true crime/Holocaust story, and a lifelong dream come true for Deborah. Her dream continues with the publication of her first novel, a thriller/courtroom drama called A NEST OF SNAKES.

Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation. For more from Deborah, please connect via

Shantelle Bisson is a published author, small business owner, and author of three books; two of which are Best Sellers. Shantelle's books include tips to help readers get through life with more calm, and teach them how to relate, communicate, and get closer to their kids, life partners, and themselves. Shantelle strives to help people feel empowered to heal their past so they can be different parents to their kids, and love themselves more completely.

Raised by a dynamic, hardworking, committed single mother, at the age of eighteen, Shantelle picked the man who would become the father of her three daughters, and her life partner. Shantelle's wonderful husband and father to her three kids, is Yannick Bisson, an internationally celebrated actor who can be seen on CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries the world over. They have been married for 34 years and running.

With the tools and ability to heal her own traumatic past, coming out of all that she did so with a strong healthy family nucleus, and three socially aware, empathetic, compassionate human beings, she began to write about her struggles, and victories, for Huffington Post. Through this opportunity, she was tapped to begin writing about her parenting journey for another online magazine, Zoomer. In addition to Shantelle's guest hosting gigs on CBC's The Goods, as well as weekly on-air parenting expert panels for other local Canadian news outlets.

After sharing so much of her story with major news outlets and witnessing how handheld devices, and social media were creating such disconnect and distraction in parenting, and relationships; Shantelle's series of books were born; Without Losing Your Cool. From Raising kids Without Losing Your Cool to Parenting Your Teen Without Losing Your Cool, and now Loving Yourself without Losing Your Cool, as well as her series of journals. Shantelle's mission is to help you with the steps you need to create the life you want.

From Shantelle herself:

I’ve been digging deep, uncovering the best parts of myself for as long as I can remember.

I did the f*#king work and broke the cycle of alcoholism that coursed through my veins, I overcame years of bulimia and shame, and healed from all the sexual abuse I endured.

I've overcome everything that was "meant to destroy" me and I'm still standing and actually living a life of Grace And Joy.

My mission is to inspire you to find your inner rock star, and your ability to forgive yourself when you fuck up. I want you to know that losing your cool doesn't mean "it's over" there are ways up and out of your darkness, whatever that darkness is...the sun always rises.

From broken bones and shredded muscle to Olympic glory… Silken's story is one of courage, perseverance and the triumph of the human spirit.

In May 1992, just 10 weeks before the Olympic Games, Silken Laumann was injured in a brutal rowing accident that left her right leg shattered and useless. Reigning world champion in Single Sculls rowing, Silken was told by doctors she might never row again.

Twenty-seven days, five operations, and countless hours of gruelling rehabilitation later, Silken was back in her shell, ready to pursue her Olympic dream. When the starter's pistol rang out on August 2, 1992, Silken made the greatest comeback in Canadian sports history, winning the bronze medal for Canada, and capturing the hearts of a nation.

Silken retired from rowing in 1999 with three Olympic medals, and since then has continued to inspire, encouraging people to dream, live in the moment and embrace failure as a stepping stone to success.

“In ten weeks she made the greatest comeback in Canadian sports history, becoming a symbol of hope to all.” The Montreal Gazette

Today's episode features an in-depth conversation on a wide range of topics with Award-winning Actress, Writer, Director & Author, KATIE BOLAND.

Chosen by Elle Canada as one of the three Canadians to watch, as an actress she has more than 80 credits to her name. A multiple award winner, she’s won a Canadian Screen Award, was a TIFF Rising Star, a Birks Diamond Woman In Film, named Best Emerging Actress by the Toronto Film Screen and one of Playbacks Ten To Watch.

Long Story, Short a ten-episode web-series Boland created and wrote based on her collection of personal essays premiered on Hulu and was recently re-released on Youtube and garnered hundreds of thousands of hits and called “the best new thing on the internet." For her performance, Boland won a Canadian Screen Award. Long Story, Short was nominated for Best Webseries at the Raindance Film Festival. Also an author, Boland’s collection of short stories, Eat Your Heart Out was chosen by the Globe and Mail as one of three hot summer reads,

“Actress-turned-writer Katie Boland is a notable new voice in Canadian fiction...a vibrant collection, populated by well-drawn characters who are broken but bursting with life. Reminiscent of Hemingway’s sharp minimalism, paired with Kerouac’s verve, Eat Your Heart Out tackles being alive in the here and now, with sterling writing and stellar voices. Boland is a bold new old-soul.”

Boland’s directorial debut, short film Lolz-Ita, that she wrote and starred in, had it’s North American premiere at the Austin Film Festival and was nominated for Best Narrative Short. It was also a part of TIFF’s Short Cuts: Share Her Journey, which highlights the “most exciting emerging female film makers in the world” as well as the Whistler Film Festival where it was nominated for the EDA Short Film Award which recognizes female film makers. It was nominated for jury prizes at the Dallas International Film Festival and Cucalorus. It was also chosen as Short Of the Week, who said,

“Boland portrays the title character with commendable subtlety, fleshing out the confusion of the young woman compellingly. It’s a complicated duality to inhabit... Her performance has the power to make or break the film, and Boland wows.”

Most recently, it was chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Boland is currently in post production on a new short Twins and she directed, wrote and starred in the pilot ReFrame for Refinery 29 x Kate Spade.

Boland was the youngest person chosen by Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly to be on a panel of cultural experts who helped steer a sweeping review of cultural policies. Recently, Boland was also on the cover of IndieScreen magazine as one of Canada’s “most impressive young producers.”

Katie splits her time between Toronto and Los Angeles. She has two feature films to be released in the coming year and three television series she wrote and created in development at CTV, Chorus and UCP. She is currently editing her feature debut We’re All In This Together that she wrote, directed, produced and starred as twins in.

Author Daniel Kalla produces engrossing novels with an intensity that matches the challenge of his other role as an ER physician at a major downtown teaching hospital. His medical thrillers focus on themes that lie at the heart of his professional life, delving into topics as diverse as pandemics, superbugs, addiction, DNA evidence and patient abuse. His most recent trilogy – The Far Side Of The Sky, Rising Sun Falling Shadow and Nightfall Over Shanghai – tells a little-known but amazing historical chapter of the Second World War, when 20,000 Jews fled Germany to find shelter in only one city: Shanghai, “The Paris of the East”. In his latest novel, Lost Immunity, Daniel tackles the issue of vaccine hesitancy and the potential impact on a global outbreak, applying his real-life experience working on the frontlines through the COVID pandemic.

This episode of Breaking Brave is so special, we are re-airing it in case you missed it. Dr. Edmund Metatawabin is a First Nations Chief and Elder, Cree writer, Author, educator, and activist. Edmund was awarded the Order of Canada for his advocacy on behalf of residential-school survivors. He is a survivor of St. Anne’s Residential School, in Fort Albany, Ontario where he and his fellow students experienced physical, psychological, and sexual abuse at the hands of school administrators. He documented his experiences in his 2014 book, Up Ghost River: A Chief’s Journey Through the Turbulent Waters of Native History available here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/227773/up-ghost-river-by-edmund-metatawabin--with-alexandra-shimo/ (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/227773/up-ghost-river-by-edmund-metatawabin--with-alexandra-shimo/)  In 1992, Edmund organized a conference for other survivors of St. Anne’s Residential School so that they could share their stories. He took their accounts to the police, spurring a criminal investigation that culminated in the convictions of five former staff. Edmund has devoted himself to righting the wrongs of the past, and educating First Nations youth on traditional knowledge. Edmund was the first born of eleven siblings. His father lived on the land, and was a natural resource harvester. Edmund was working on his Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies at York University when he was called home to run for Chief. For eight years, he held that position; concentrating on economic development and education. He has adopted the motto “For Those That Are Not Yet Born” in his research and writing to honour the First Nation heritage on Turtle Island. His 2014 memoir Up Ghost River: A Chief’s Journey Through the Turbulent Waters of Native History was a shortlisted nominee for the Governor General's Award for English-language non-fiction at the 2014 Governor General's Awards. His publications also include: Hanaway (2004) and Harvesting: Cree Hunting and Gathering Techniques (2008). In 2010, he was part of the Our Story Advisory Committee for the Canadian Aboriginal Writing Challenge, run by the Historica-Dominion Institute.  Toward the end of the episode, you’ll hear directly from Edmund’s nephew, Terry Metatawabin, Edmund’s grandson, Braiden Metatawabin, and his partner Daanis McDonald. You’ll also hear a song performed by Edmund’s son Shannin Metatawabin. You can watch his performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOQoy0vsA0s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOQoy0vsA0s)  If you're listening to this episode somewhere that you find yourself able, try to stand when the song begins for its duration.  We’d like to offer our most heartfelt, deepest thanks to Edmund Metatawabin and his family for their unmatched bravery, generosity, and openness in trusting us enough to share their stories, experiences, wisdom and deeply profound insight on Breaking Brave. We understand the gravity of this trust and appreciate it beyond what words can describe. Our hope for this episode is an echo of Edmund’s hope: That you listen and share the truth with the people in your life. That you pass on what you learn to your children, your family, and your community so that all future generations can know and understand the truth and history of Canada's enduring, genocidal, and horrific treatment of our First Nations people. Thank you for listening.  -- As always, thanks so much for tuning into Breaking Brave! He also gave one of the most thorough and impassioned answers to what bravery is that we've ever heard on this podcast about bravery... So already, that's worthy of a listen. Before the Fort Myers man became a successful barbershop owner, published author and motivational speaker https://www.winknews.com/tag/inspiring-people/ (inspiring people), Suarez, 36 years old, said he grew up on the wrong streets and the wrong side of the law. Ivan Suarez displays his prison identification card on his social media pages because he wants people to know about his past and believe in their future, no matter where they are. (Credit: Ivan Suarez) “Fort Myers has always been a great place to live,” Suarez said. “But like any other town, it has it’s dark spots. As a kid coming from a single-parent home, I come from those same streets kids tend to get lost in.” Suarez said he was in and out of trouble as a kid and at age 23 when he was incarcerated for armed trafficking. “I got out with a new vision on life and I vowed to never go back to that life again,” Suarez said. “About two and a half years after being released from prison, I opened up my very first barbershop, Boomz Barbershop.” Twelve years later, Suarez is running two barber businesses in his hometown and reaching out to kids in the community, sharing his story to motivate youth. “If I can grab that one child, if you influence them correctly, they will influence their friends correctly and so on and so forth,” Suarez said, “showing people there is more to life than what you are subject to.” Suarez, who wrote a book, travels around his community and the world as a motivational speaker. He also visits prisons to encourage inmates to find a new perspective and passion as he did. Ivan Suarez gives a motivational speech, inspiring people to overcome adversity. (Credit: Ivan Suarez) “Encouraging people to do more and be more,” Suarez said. One of his regular customers, Renny Razor, said he chooses Suarez’s services because of his past and because of the impact he sees the Fort Myers native making on the community’s youth. “I would describe him as an inspiration,” Razor said, “a businessman who started from nothing and now has two barbershops and also is an author, traveling the world and his mess-ups in life are his message to the youth.” Suarez has traveled as far as China to teach a class at the All-Star Barbering Academy and speak to children overseas. Genevieve graduated from the University of Toronto in 1986 with a Bachelor of Music in Performance on the Oboe, but did not pursue music as a career other than to teach piano to dozens of neighbourhood children. Instead, she held a number of careers from advertising and marketing to fundraising, then left it all for her most challenging role as a stay-at-home mom. In 2007, Genevieve decided to try her hand at writing a book, using everything she’d learned from years of reading historical fiction. The following year, she and her family moved to Nova Scotia, where she was suddenly surrounded by Canadian history she knew nothing about. She dove into research, alarmed by what she’d never learned, and since then has made it her mission to bring Canadian history to life, writing one book per year. Bluebird, publishing April 2022, is her 7th Canadian historical fiction novel, all of which were published by Simon & Schuster Canada. She currently lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia with her husband, two daughters, two cats, and a silly little dog. An avid athlete his whole life, John has participated in over 100 running and cycling races, and over a dozen obstacle races all over the country and even in Europe. After his Parkinson’s diagnosis, physical exercise became crucial. But this wasn’t going to stop John. He knew he would need to prepare himself for the unknown battle that he was about to face. In 2019 John started powerlifting. To his surprise he discovered that lifting heavy weights stressed his central nervous system, which helped set back some of his Parkinson’s symptoms. Although not a cure for Parkinson’s, John finds that frequent powerlifting exercises allow him to control some of the symptoms associated with the disease. John's love for the sport as well as for people sparked his inner passion to want to bring light to his situation in order to motivate others fighting the same battle. What started off simply as John's mindset and motto that he lives by “Its Just Parkinson's” has spiralled out of control and developed into a powerful movement and organization called IJP or IT'S JUST PARKINSON’S. Through this platform John continues to connect and help people battling Parkinsons Disease both within his community and even across the country and the globe like in Europe and the Middle East. John hopes to continue to touch as many people as possible through his new Documentary Movie titled “IT'S JUST PARKINSON’S” that will soon be available to the public. John is determined to help shine light on what a lot of people still don’t know about Parkinsons Disease, and feels that anyone dealing with a disease of their own or hardship in their life, can develop an IJP mindset that can help them through their journey in life. Since we spoke with Olga just last week, Olga has now single handedly raised over $18,000.00 for the war in Ukraine - WOW!!! These funds have specifically gone towards hospitals, to purchase medical supplies. They've purchased ventilators which were urgently needed, among additional medical supplies and equipment needed to heal the wounded and those in need of medical help and attention in the war zone in Ukraine. This support is truly incredible and we can't thank you enough - for being a part of the Breaking Brave community - and for supporting this incredibly urgent and worthy cause. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Olga and all of us at Breaking Brave are beyond grateful. -- Olga came to Canada in 2001, holding the hand of her 8 year old daughter in one hand and a cart with 4 pieces of luggage in another. She was a single mom just wanting a better life for her daughter. She brought in her mom and sister who are now the most proud Canadians she knows. As a professional, she built her career working in Telecom (Bell) and at tech companies like Oracle and, now, Splunk. Like many other Ukrainian women in Canada, Olga helped Ukraine in 2014-2015, when Putin took Crimea and pieces of Lugansk and Donetsk regions. And today, when the bombs are falling on schools and apartment buildings murdering and hurting children  in the middle of Europe in her native Ukraine, like thousands of other Ukrainian women, Olga is waking up and going to bed with a sole purpose to help Ukrainian people, to reduce suffering, to save lives. Each of us picks her way, her starfish to save. Each of us sends money to Ukraine to enable individuals resisting this aggression to keep fighting, keep living. Each of us is a part of her own  "chain of trust" where we give to people we trust. Olga's way is to be nimble, be agile, make the most impact with whatever money she gets. These causes are not always "sexy" but always save lives and reduce suffering. Thank you all for trusting Olga and for making a real difference. Direct Notes from Olga below: Here are the names I mentioned:  Daryl Wood who were the first to send me the money without questions asked My new friend, a Jewish community leader Avrum Rosensweig https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avrum_Rosensweig Iryna Shpak, the lady whose son was killed in his bed Diana Makarova and Roman Donik, volunteers in Ukraine I support Rostyslav and Iryna Bilchenko - Canadian Ukrainians who organize aid for the hospital, currently targeting 15K for medications. Whether it’s her high-fashion yet effortlessly cool aesthetic, her irresistible blend of vintage pop and lush contemporary beats, or the raw honesty that comes through her lyricism, one thing is certain - there is a rarity about an artist such as RALPH. With an emphasis on narrative songwriting and genre-bending musical style (with a background in vocal jazz and folk music), RALPH has created a special role for herself within the contemporary music scene; a sound that is catchy but cool, sexy but smart, edgy but sophisticated. She’s developed a soundscape that is uniquely her own, but what truly makes RALPH's songs special is that they are ferociously honest and relatable. This finesse sent her hit track “Gravity” up the radio charts into the Top 20, followed by a JUNO award nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. Starting with little more than talent and a vision, over the past five years RALPH has built an incredible following in the USA, Canada and Europe. She’s joined the likes of Ria Mae, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Scott Helman on three cross-Canada tours, and has drawn crowds south of the border for a North American tour with US band JOAN. S.H.A. is an alliance of salespeople, sales leaders, health experts and technology providers who are building awareness around mental health within sales. They help fellow salespeople and sales leaders feel comfortable talking about Mental Health and share best practices to navigate stressful situations in a mentally healthy way. Through survey research conducted at Sales Health Alliance, Jeff identified that at least 43% of salespeople struggle with their Mental Health and the opportunity to reach peak levels of performance and well-being through better Mental Health is massive. Data from the WHO shows every $1 invested into treatment for common Mental Health disorders (anxiety, depression, burnout, etc) there is a $4 return in improved health and productivity. Through workshops, consulting services, and technology, Sales Health Alliance empowers salespeople to start breaking down stigma, share best practices for managing mental health in the sales trenches and make it normal to talk about mental health in the workplace. Jeff reminds us that vulnerability is our biggest strength towards building genuine relationships and lasting connections with others. “An essential trait for any entrepreneur is the ability to recognize opportunity where others don’t but it’s the ability to act on that recognition that is essential for a successful entrepreneur” – Peter Neal, Owner & Founder, Neal Brothers Foods In 1988, fresh out of university and eager to make an impact, Peter and Chris Neal embarked on a journey that would change their lives and the lives of many others. It all started with an idea, curiosity, a desire to contribute and a letter from Peter to Chris suggesting they make croutons in their mom’s kitchen in Aurora, ON.  Believing in the importance of empathy and understanding that consumers’ tastes and needs were evolving as was their desire to trust the food they buy, the Neal Brothers set out to create a food company with delicious products consumers could feel good about. From the beginning, they’ve remained rooted in a commitment to delivering ‘goodness’ through their passion for tried and tested recipes and their purpose to actively help those living with food insecurity.  Fast forward 30 years, the successful Canadian-based Neal Brothers Food Brands and Neal Brothers Food Distribution companies are known as leaders in organic, specialty and natural food products. They are continuously challenging themselves and their partners to provide consumers with new and innovative products that will delight them. Most recently launching a Canadian made de-alcoholised beer with new technology that produces a far superior taste to the current competition.  Peter oversees Neal Brothers’ Brand Development, Marketing and Sales. In his role, he leads partnerships, sales, distribution and all marketing and communications activities. When away from his desk, and not mired in a pandemic, he relentlessly pursues the world looking for ‘what’s next’ in the food industry to delight Canadians.  Peter is also known for his commitment to helping innovative food and beverage companies succeed, regularly offering mentorship in entrepreneurship with empathy and is on the board of several start-up companies and not-for-profit organizations. He is a passionate advocate and advisor for Community Food Centers Canada (CFCC) and the co-founder of the Good Food Builders program, through which like-minded food companies contribute much needed resources to CFCC each year. CFCC, an organization near and dear to the Neal Brothers family, helps food insecure Canadians through access to food, food-based education, education and other community services.  For more from Marilyn Barefoot or to get in touch with her directly, please connect via: Marilyn's website: https://marilynbarefoot.com/ (https://marilynbarefoot.com/ ) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marilynbarefootbigideas/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/marilynbarefootbigideas/ ) Twitter: @MarilynBarefoot Instagram: @marilynbarefoot ABOUT Marilyn Barefoot, the Host of Breaking Brave: https://breaking-brave-with-mar.captivate.fm/listen (Breaking Brave) is Hosted byhttps://marilynbarefoot.com/ ( Marilyn Barefoot), one of the foremost business coaches & creative ideators in North America - Marilyn gets hired by several of the world's biggest brands, companies, and organizations (the NHL, McDonald's, Deloitte, Coca-Cola, MTV, Viacom, The CFL, Forbes Magazine; to name just a few) to help them get unstuck and generate big, creative ideas.

He took their accounts to the police, spurring a criminal investigation that culminated in the convictions of five former staff. Edmund has devoted himself to righting the wrongs of the past, and educating First Nations youth on traditional knowledge. Edmund was the first born of eleven siblings. His father lived on the land, a natural resource harvester. Edmund was working on his Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies at York University when he was called home to run for Chief. For eight years, he held that position concentrating on economic development and education. You can watch his performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOQoy0vsA0s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOQoy0vsA0s)  We ask that if you are listening to this episode somewhere that you  find yourself able to, please stand when the song begins for its duration.  We’d like to offer our most heartfelt, deepest thanks to Edmund Metatawabin and his family for their incredible bravery, generosity, and openness in trusting us enough to share their stories, experiences, wisdom and deeply profound insight on Breaking Brave. Robert Rotenberg can’t remember a time he didn’t want to be a novelist. He grew up in a family of readers and storytellers. Robert began to write stories in elementary school and took every English and writing course he could in high school. He studied English literature at university, took a year off to write a book and found he couldn’t write more than a chapter. Then he went to law school in Toronto and graduate school in England, worked as a magazine editor in Paris for an English-speaking magazine named “Passion,” then came back to Toronto and for six years published and edited his own city magazine, “T.O. The Magazine of Toronto.” He also worked as a film executive and as a producer at CBC Radio. After all that, Robert opened his criminal law practice — crime was the only part of law that ever interested him. The first day he started working as a lawyer, he also started writing his first novel. That took 10 years. It’s still in a drawer. He worked on “Old City Hall” next. It took a decade, and in 2009 he had his first breakthrough. The book was published in nine languages and became a Canadian bestseller. Since then he's written five more novels. His latest novel, “Downfall,” which we discuss, was released in February 2021. Honestly, I couldn't put it down and would highly recommend Downfall for a fun and suspenseful read! Robert also works as a screenwriter; having co-written two Murdoch Mysteries and a TV series proposal that he sold, he’s now working on a number of TV and film projects and, of course, his next novel!
