I am your chill companion through the world of leftist theory audiobooks. I will help you demystify theory and interpret it through a modern lens!
The late, great David Graeber had some keen insights on the nature of work and how much of it is completely unnecessary. I take you through this short essay that spawned the more thorough book, and add my own insights. Rest In Power, David!

The first of a couple of shorter essays by David Graeber I recently covered. This one, Are You an Anarchist? asks some simple questions to reveal how much anarchism people tend to already abide by in their daily lives.

On this episode we dive into a new book! Part 1 of The Principles of Communism by Friedrich Engels. Engels lays out the relevant history and context for the second half of the essay, which will get into the meat of the communist world he envisions. Trolls tried hard to derail this discussion, but we persevered and got through the first half.

The Conquest of Bread Finale! Finally after all these weeks (not to mention a power outage midway through the stream!) we have come to the final part of the final chapter of this book! Many permaculture ideas were spring boarded to from Kropotkin's ideas on agriculture. He got a lot of predictions right about the future, too!

Part 2 in my series getting you acquainted with one of the three core schools of thought that make up Solaris: permaculture. We go through more lectures by permaculture founder Bill Mollison, listen to Geoff Lawton's take on the permaculture ethics, and get into coursework from an actual permaculture design certificate course by Oregon State University.

Permaculture designer and educator Matthew Stephens joined me for the first half of the final chapter of The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin. It was interesting to see how many of Kropotkin's ideas for the future of agriculture came true and also how many translate well to a permaculture design system.

Though this chapter of The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin was relatively short, it provided a lot of good jumping off points to talk about things like what an anarchist society would look like to Peter Kropotkin, the soul crushing nature of hyper specialized capitalist work, and many others.
I used this Sunday Funday to dive into the world of permaculture. We covered the three ethics Bill Mollison and David Holmgren laid out, Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share.
We talked about the 12 principles from David Holmgren's book, Observe and Interact, Catch and Store Energy, Obtain a Yield, Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback, Use and Value Renewable Resources, Produce No Waste, Design From the Patterns to the Details, Integrate Rather Than Segregate, Use Small and Slow Solutions, Use and Value Diversity, Use Edges and Value the Marginal, and Creatively Use and Respond to Change. We listened to the founders of permaculture talk about why they set up the design system.

Sunday streams tend to be a bit more casual than the Friday theory streams. This time, my wife Amanda and I selected a Jimmy Snow video where he watches some tea spilling from Kaitlin Bennett's sister. It makes for some good jumping off points on class privilege and other topics.

The excellent Sean Scoles of the Tribunus Plebis Podcast was on the steam once again to help me close out Ch 12 of The Conquest of Bread. Our conversation lead us to such topics as myths perpetuated by capitalist owners, empowering everyone to live their best lives, and books such as Atlas Shrugged and Brave New World, which set out very different views of human nature than the book we were reading!
