St Michael Junior badminton club is one of the first clubs here in Guernsey to achieve the award of Badminton England Premier Club and Sport England Clubmark.

The Guernsey Sports Commission hosted the 3rd Brooks Macdonald Performance and Coaching Conference last weekend at St Sampsons High and Footes Lane. Local coaches were joined by 15 students and 5 lecturers from Bournemouth University and one delegate who came from as far away as Singapore to share knowledge and experience.

The Guernsey Sports Commission has launched a Tag-Games book which features 101 tag-games created by school children here in the Bailiwick. Tied in with our 10th birthday earlier this year, we challenged local school children to come up with a basic tag-game and to write up their game on a template we designed. We then collected in over 400 entries and chose the best 101 games for our book. We then got it produced professionally and are ready to make it available for distribution for only £10.

A weight lifting competition is being organised to take place on Monday 26th January from 8pm at our Brooks Macdonald High Performance Centre adjacent to the athletics track at Footes Lane. This will be the first weight lifting competition in Guernsey in decades and will be open to anyone living in Guernsey.
On Wednesday this week, the first sessions of walking football were introduced here in Guernsey by the Friends of KGV. There were two sessions held at the 3G pitch which has just celebrated its first birthday last month. The sessions were led by Angus Mackay, Football Development Officer. Rachel Merrien has recently been licensed as a new RFU Level 2 Rugby Coach, and is the first to achieve the accolade here in the bailiwick. Her appointment comes after three weeks of hard work researching and planning rugby coaching techniques to deliver on the three intense days of practical on the rugby pitch. Her accreditation is for the 15 a side game which is the traditional game taught in the UK and is a nationally recognised qualification.
Rachel took on the course as she enjoys coaching and thrives on seeing other players develop and highlighted "if i have good coaching I want to give good coaching back to apsiring young athletes". She is hopefull that other players seeing her as their coach will help inspire more players to take up the game and hopes to serve as a as a good role model for up and coming rugby stars.

At a reception held at the Bailiffs chambers, the athletes set to represent Guernsey in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month received their official farewell by the Deputy Bailiff. In the Bailiffs absence, Richard McMahon joined the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association Sponsors, alongside team managers and officials, to wish the athletes representing Guernsey good luck in the 20th Commonwealth Games, this time to be contested in Glasgow's largest city, Glasgow.
60 girls from four secondary schools here in Guernsey attended our M&S Girls Convention held last Wednesday at the Indoor Cricket Guernsey centre at the Hougue Du Pommier. The annual event is now in its fourth year having continually been supported by Marks and Spencer. The day offers girls in year 9 the chance to try a range of different sports and physical activities in a fun and women only environment.

Street Sports is one of our headline programme, running for 50 weeks of the year. Over the past few weeks the participants attending the sessions have been in for a treat as a number of additional opportunities have been made available to them. On Friday 2nd May a football tournament was held at the King George V Playing Fields for 16 participants from our three evening Street Sports sessions. Paul van Beek from the Youth Commission was also in attendance and joined in with the three teams who played in a round robin tournament.
Get Active fortnight returns from May 31st, with even more free activities on offer. With over 35 different activities with more than 90 sessions on offer, all activities are free of charge and are offered as taster sessions – making them accessible and suitable for everyone, whatever their level of fitness.
On Wednesday 14th May Guernsey will play its part in a worldwide event, which is the Queen's Baton Relay. Whilst it is welcomed at a private reception at Beau Sejour tomorrow evening, on Wednesday we are touring a number of Primary Schools here in Guernsey. We start our tour at 9am at Le Houguette School before reaching La Mare de Carteret Primary School around midday.
James Le Tissier, from Year 6, is one of the batonbearers due to represent his school that day. He enjoys playing Table Tennis & Football and has many excellent qualities which his headteacher highlighted were some of the reasons why he was selected to represent his school in this global event, that has so far toured 65 countries. He was highlighted as a kind child with a caring attitude whilst being consistently hard working and is always helpful and often gives up his own free time.
Rubi Hockey from Year 3 has demonstrated a real talent for Netball. Her school has highlighted that she has a real talent for netball and has a good attitude and is a reliable team player.
The Queen's Baton Relay is due to be seen by over 4000 children next week when it tours Primary Schools here in Guernsey on Wednesday 14th May. It will start its journey at 9am and tour the majority of Primary Schools here in Guernsey before reaching St. Mary & St. Michael at approximately 3pm.
At St. Mary & St. Michael Seanna Hainsworth and Leighton Woodhead, both in Year 6, will be some of the batonbearers lucky enough to be part of this worldwide relay. Seanna is a keen dancer and is also the Head Girl at her school. Her headteacher highlighted that she always tries her best and can be relied upon to go the extra mile. She has been involved in dance for a long time and has taken part in the World Cup of Dance for Irish Dancing.
Leighton, will join Seanna in bearering the baton that day, and is also from Year 6 and is head boy at St. Mary & St. Michael Primary School. His nomination highlighted that he can be relied upon to go the extra mile and he has also represented Guernsey at Rugby.
On Wednesday 14th May the Queen's Baton Relay will be touring Primary Schools here in Guernsey. The morning will start at 9am at La Houguette Primary School before venturing North towards Amherst and then Haute Capelles Primary School in the afternoon.
At Haute Capelles, Katie-Louise Baker in Year 3, will be representing her school alongside Thomas Gough from Year 6. Katie has cerebral palsy and uses crutches or a wheelchair, however this never stops her from having a go at anything. Her school nominated her as she shows real determination and always has a smile on her face.
Thomas lives for sport and always joins up for the sporting activities on offer both in and out of school. His school headteacher highlighted that he always displays good sportsmanship and positive behaviour towards his teammates and opponents.
Jaime Sarre, from Year 6, is a keen Netballer and also enjoys playing and her school highlighted that she is extremely motivated and rises to any challenge she is set. She has the skills and attributes which makes her perfect for this opportunity highlighted the school in their nomination form.
Jacob will join Jaime in bearing the baton. He is also in Year 6 and enjoys Cricket and Cricket and in the nomination form the school submitted to us it highlighted that Jacob has a positive attitude, always preserves and is keen to represent the school in this 'once is a lifetime opportunity'.
On Wednesday 15th May the Queen's Baton Relay is due to visit a number of Primary Schools here in Guernsey. Different children from each school will bear the baton and represent Guernsey in the local leg of what is a worldwide relay, which will have travelled to over 65 different countries before arriving in the Bailiwick.
In Vale Primary School Alfie Bentley & Gemma Creber, both in Year 6, will bear the baton. Allfie Bentley is a keen footballer and has captained both the Tag Rugby Team which won the Primary Schools Tournament and the school Football team which won both the Guernsey Schools and Channel Islands Championships. His school highlighted him as a great sportsman who is always keen to develop his skills and to lead by example.
Gemma Creber, also in Year 6, will join Alfie to bear the baton. She is a keen Netballer and has shown dedication, determination and great leadership within the A Netball team over the last 2 years. The School highlighted that she is a truely fantastic player that could play any position within the team. She has captained the A Team this year and led the players to a 7-schools victory and 3rd place in the Island Tournament. Gemma has represented the Island (Panthers) U11 U12 and received player of the match against Jersey.
We met with a few players from the Guernsey Squash & Racketball Association who are gearing up to represent Guernsey in the Winchester Junior Open between 9-11th May. The 14 junior players range from 9-15 year of age and are looking forward to traveling to the UK to fly the Guernsey flag.
The seventh Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop 30in30 Challenges will be taking place again this year starting on Saturday 26th April. Before they embarked on their challenge we met with a few of them to find out what they are looking forward to most about riding for 1 hour for the next 30 days.

The Guernsey Sports Commission celebrated their 10th Birthday last weekend with a special reception at Government House. Over 40 individuals that have been involved with the local charity were in attendance and a review video showcasing the achievement of the Commission in the last decade was shown.
