A podcast where audio-makers stand silently in fields (or things that could be broadly interpreted as fields).
“I made it around dusk as I wanted to get the call of the Baja California frogs that live on this stretch of the river… it’s a part of the river which hasn’t completely been trapped in concrete as the water table is too high, and as such, the concrete bottom was never able to stick here. It’s a peculiar, but in my opinion stunningly surreal part of LA.”
“Walking around Walthamstow Wetlands in late October, moments before the area was shut down due to a threat from an armed person.”
“I made this crappy phone recording late one evening, passing through Shadwell on my way home. I was admiring the quaint docklands architecture along Cable Street (and the clear skies – I think it was a full moon that night) when I approached a stationary London bus. The sound coming from it was so peaceful and unexpected. I inspected the bus; it was empty, and the driver had propped himself up against a small wall outside and was smoking a cigarette. My first thought was that he was playing some music, and I thought about approaching him to ask what it was, but got shy. Instead, I stood there for a few minutes, taking in the atmosphere and texture created by the mystery sound, punctuated by the occasional passing car or cyclist.
I later read that this is the sound London’s new electric buses make when they’re stationary. They’ve been especially designed that way as a safety feature, given that electric vehicles are nearly silent by default. I had never heard this sound before, but really like the thought of a future where it’s a regular feature in the city’s soundscape.”
“The sound of birds, constantly falling leaves mixed with very light rain, some forestry work in the background and the odd plane above.”
“A field recording of Melbourne city from a cyclist’s perspective. This is the combination of two recordings that were made simultaneously. One was made with a contact mic attached to the seat post of my bicycle just in front of the chain. This was to record the sound of the operation of the bicycle. The atmos was recorded with the inbuilt microphones of a Zoom H5 portable recorder covered by a windjammer. I mounted the portable recorder in the middle of my bike’s rear basket using two elastic straps so it could move freely through the air without touching the sides or bottom of the basket. This was to avoid recording a bang whenever I hit a bump in the road. Then I rode from the Arts Centre past Flinders Street Station and up Swanston Street. I passed a number of buskers, pedestrians and trams on my journey. I like how I captured the changing sonic landscape for a cyclist: as I’m riding the sound is a blurry wash punctuated by bike noise, and then the atmos drops into perspective when I stop.”
“We rented a small boat for the day to explore the island. We found several coves only accessible by sea. While anchored at one of these coves I noticed how wonderful the sound of the water hitting the boat was and had to capture it.”
“After all the day tourists have left and the evening starts to set in Haworth becomes very quiet and eerie. With the church and Brontë parsonage to one side and fields to the other the beautiful cemetery stands deserted. Just birds and livestock populate the area. This is my favourite time for a visit.”
“Cobh, February. A slimy slipway with uncertain footing. A microphone collects a rasping tone as the tape, holding it to a barnacle encrusted hand-rail, gives way. Secured, it reveals a metallic, reverberant, sonic world, brought forth by the percussive action of waves. The rail-end slips below the green, foam-topped water, and seeks to convey the holder to the depths.”
“Here I’m at a late night tennis match. I think it started just before 8 PM and went until around 10:30. It was at a tournament in North Carolina”

“At the top of a hill in North London, as the Harvest Supermoon rises, the sound of an orchestra rehearsing pours into the night through an open door. Buses, children playing in the distance and wind noise on a bad phone microphone flow in and out of the melody as the conductor stops and starts the musicians.”
“We stayed on the shore of Loch Scridain and the night air brought with it a slightly disconcerting sound. I eventually established that it was not babies being murdered in the woods but a lively heronry.”
“I was travelling with my family on the island of Sardinia. We turned off the highway near Telti, a mountain town outside of Olbia, heading to an Agritourismo for dinner.
At first I couldn’t make out what the clamorous sound was…it was both noisy and beautiful in the same moment. The sun was setting over the mountain, so I had to squint to see what was making all that sound. And then I could see an entire flock of sheep, hundreds of them, walking through the field, each with a different bell hanging around their necks. They were clanging at different intervals and pitches; a completely accidental symphony.
I climbed over the fence and stuck my recorder out…after I first insisted that my family stay quiet, so I didn’t also have the recording of protesting kids yelling: “What are you doing, Mom?!”
It’s a simple, unmodified sound that completely transports me to a whole new place when I listen to it.”
“Hundreds of people gather in solidarity at one of the locations threatened by far right violence last night, as anti-racist groups across the UK respond to a list encouraging attacks on immigration centres.
This followed a week of domestic terrorism from far right groups, fuelled by a poisonous political and media discourse in this country, which had seen violent attacks on communities – rioters storming hotels housing asylum seekers, targeting mosques, burning a library, hurling bricks and fireworks.
On the morning of the 8th August, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme still chose to euphemistically refer to these far right rioters as, “anti-immigration protesters” in their news bulletin, with BBC News previously talking about one far right gathering as a “pro-British march”, newspapers like the Daily Mail and the Express praised the “anti-hate marchers” who had “faced down the thugs” on the 8th despite printing years of dehumanising, racist and Islamophobic headlines which had consciously laid the groundwork for the hatred and violence of the past few days and many of the MPs who had spent years pouring bile into this poisonous, racist discourse – across political divides – decried the violence, without acknowledging how the public scapegoating of refugees and immigrants had lit these fires.
This Saturday 10th August there’s a national day of protest in England – find your local demonstration here: https://standuptoracism.org.uk“
“It’s a cave at the foot of the hill at Assos under the old Venetian fortress. There’s a sea entrance (the light in the centre) and a small hole that gives access from a small pebble beach.”
“I was on a walk in Chopwell Woodland Park which is on the fringe of Gateshead, and I came across this beautiful pylon. I heard it first fizzing with static among the trees, so when I saw it, I had to get my recorder out and capture it. That evening there was an amazing thunderstorm, which the pylon was clearly feeling hours before I could.”
“A journey on the underground. Eight and a half minute field recording. London, April 2024.”
“Around the Dolomites in Northeastern Italy, you frequently come across herds of cows. Munching on grass and wagging their heads, their cowbells echo around the mountain valleys like wind chimes or gamelans.”

“We were in a place called Bratch, talking a walk along a canal towpath. We had a big trivial argument, saw some baby moorhens and nice houseboats, and on the way back to the car heard a full-throated scream of “Sweet Caroline! Bababa”
“It was recorded on summer solstice 21st of June in Stonehenge last week, where thousands of people gathered there to wait for the sunrise. Loads people brought drums and all kinds of instruments with them and was improvising together spontaneously. Chaotic but inviting.”
“I made this recording recently whilst on tour in Norway.
There was a national alarm test (similar to what we had in the UK a while back) and I was down by the Harbour… Just captured on my iPhone so not the best quality.”
“Don’t know if it qualifies as a field recording–it’s water draining through the pipes after a washing machine spin cycle.”
“Recorded on Saturday 4th May 2024 in Aulus-les-Bains, a little village nestled in the French Pyrenees.
I was out for a walk around the village watching the soft colours of the houses take on the faded glow of the evening sun when I came across a field full of donkeys who were running towards food. You can hear the cowbells around their necks sing out as they eat together. In the distance I could hear a wind chime from one of the houses near the fields and together with the roar of the river that runs through, the birds, bees and scuttle of insects, it felt like a brief moment of everyday magic.”
“This is a gibbon morning chorus, recorded in the car park of Fota House, near Cobh, Co. Cork. The car park is seperated from Fota Wildlife Park by a fence. There is also a scattered chorus of birds, some in the trees overhead, some further away. You can also hear children’s voices as they wander the wildlife park. From where I recorded I couldn’t see the Gibbons, but I could see a Wallaby wandering around, within 100 metres of where I stood. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to get a 100% clean recording here as there are always cars arriving and departing from the house and wildlife park, and there is a very busy road within audible range.”
“Created by the architect Nikola Bašić in 2005. Everytime I visited the sea organ it was crowded with tourists. This time – although only for a brief moment – I was alone with the organ and the sea.”
“When I asked if I may record, the lady said of course – she loves the sound, too, and plays it back from her phone when she’s away from the farm, it helps her fall asleep. She also said she sometimes dozes off while working in the shop, which is in the room next to the mill.”
“It’s a contact mic recording of a corrugated iron roof sheet rattling in the wind. There was a fisherman in a nearby hut singing and you can just pick him up from time to time during the recording
I was squatting on the ground with the mic attached to the sheet via a clothes peg, next to a row of fishermen’ huts.”

“I recorded this while Easter camping the other week at my friend’s place in Chewton, Victoria. Nothing like sleeping in a tent to get you up early! But this was totally worth it.”
“It’s a park with marshes, trails and boardwalks. It was in the path of totality, so we traveled there to witness the total solar eclipse — about 45 minutes from where we live in Ottawa, ON.
Recording consists of loud spring peepers (a type of frog), and people, some Canada geese. I paused the recording midway when my daughter asked me a question.
You can tell when the total eclipse happens from people’s reactions changing dramatically. We were all standing and sitting on a wooden boardwalk, so you can hear that too…”
“…a singing extractor hood in my mum’s kitchen which makes this deep rumbling tone when the wind catches it from outside the kitchen window. It only happens with an Easterly wind.”

“I made this tiny recording of bees in Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland. It was August, 2022, peak summer, and the big bees were zooming in and out of the clover and a patch of fireweed and other tall wildflowers at the edge of our campsite. Also heard: a bird call, footsteps, the voice of a four year old, and the Park Ranger’s truck.”
“I’ve been walking past this music college on the way to work for nearly fifteen years. “This is a short snippet of an afternoon in a traditional coffeehouse in Vienna, Austria in March 2023.
Vienna is famous for its coffeehouse history, this coffeehouse being over 100 years old. Young and old, residents and tourists alike spend long afternoons here, chatting, reading the newspaper, eating Apfelstrudel and trying their way through their many coffee specialties. When you’re in luck, as we were, there could be a piano and violin duo playing which you can hear alongside the chatter of guests, clanking of silver spoons on dishes, and the formally-dressed waiters taking orders in the background.”
“On Saturday 15 April, a pigeon showcased it’s cinephile credentials by joining a packed audience in the BFI Southbank’s biggest auditorium (NFT 1) for a screening of Mervyn LeRoy’s classic movie, Gold Diggers of 1933.
The pigeon did not have a ticket however and before the film started, the team at the venue diligently attempted to liberate the bird from the cinema screen. After 30 minutes of various approaches it was decided that actually it could stay and watch the film.
Thankfully it was freed later in the day and has been telling the other pigeons of London about the virtues of the big screen experience.
This recording was taken in the audience, before the film was started, whilst venue staff tried to coax the pigeon towards a fire escape. It starts just as they decided it might be worth playing some cat sounds into the PA system.

“Made on the tidal beach on the river Thames watching people mudlarking just under Waterloo bridge… trains pulling into Waterloo station above and simultaneously waves lapping below… Towards the end you hear a mudlarker say ‘uh oh a shoe, you get a lot of single shoes around here!'”
“Cadogan Pier, North Bank of the river Thames, beneath Albert Bridge near Chelsea Embankment. Built in 1841 Cadogan Pier has been Chelsea’s only river transport link for over 150 years and currently it is served by the Thames Clipper Uber Boat service to Putney and Canary Wharf. This is a Hydrophone recording (recording under the water) taken on a sunny February afternoon – you might hear boats, traffic on the bridge, a few birds, the pier, wind and waves.”

“Hundreds of people gather to demonstrate outside the Houses of Parliament whilst MPs hold the second reading of the ‘Illegal Migration Bill’, a piece of legislation that denies asylum to anyone risking their lives to cross the Channel in ‘small boats’. The government has itself admitted that the legislation might breach the European convention on human rights and the UN has said it’s a ‘clear breach’ of the refugee convention. At its second reading the bill was passed 311 to 251. 307 of the votes for the bill came from the Conservative party.”
“Myself and my co-editor (at The Sonification) went to cover a story about a mining company that has permits to start an open pit project in a rural area about 150km north of Bergen, with all the waste rock and process chemicals to be deposited in the nearby fjord—which also happens to be a pristine National Salmon Fjord. To a lot of local people we met, the fjord is a major food source, a place to relax and fish with family, and beyond that, an identity and a way of life. The story of the mining project is incredibly complicated and goes back a long way, but it’s a source of immense bitterness and sadness to many.
The underwater recording is from a hydrophone at 5 metres’ depth, with some mysterious scrapes and gurgles that could be from marine life, of which there’s a lot… There’s also some drilling sounds, which probably come from the construction and tunnelling work at the mine, although I can’t be sure.”
“A soundscape recorded on December 27, 2022 at around 10 a.m. in Bacău. It immortalises ‘Alaiul datinilor’ 56th edition, a special day when people from all over the Moldova region come to the city of Bacău to show off their own traditions, songs and dances. Everyone is wearing a costume with different kind of masks and is making a different kind of noise. The result is an explosion of colours and sounds all over the city.”

As the final few fell to earth, gusts swept them up into piles and down the road. That sound of chasing leaves always reminds me that winter here is just around the corner.”
“I went to Brianna Ghey’s vigil last night outside the Department of Education. It was a very emotional and affecting time, with people standing together holding candles and lighters, whilst chanting Brianna Ghey’s name. We are in the midst of what feels like a suffocatingly transphobic time, but to stand united in love and solidarity for our trans and non-binary siblings felt powerful. I recorded the one minute silence that was held at 7pm, after which we all collectively chanted her name. The silence that hangs in the air after fizzes with anger, power, love and hope. It was heartbreaking and breathtaking.”
“Plymouth Nighttime — Recorded August 31, 2022 in Plymouth, MA. We were staying at a house on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay. At night you could see the lights of Pronvincetown across the water. Recorded with binaural mics / Zoom H1n on the deck of the house, facing east.”
“On January 7th I went to an unusual Orthodox Christmas service at the Catholic Church of St. Johns in Vilnius where the service was led by a chaplain father Heorhiy Kovalenko visiting from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kyjiv.
The service was organized by the Lithuanian Orthodox priests who left Moscow Patriarchate and are now serving Ukrainian refugees and other members of the Orthodox community in Lithuania who do not want to pray in the churches of Moscow Patriarchate.
This was a very moving bilingual service, where father Heorhiy Kovalenko was praying in Ukrainian for all those displaced by the war and those helping them, and the carol singers (if this is a correct term) were answering in both Ukrainian and Lithuanian.”
“The February full moon had just come up and I was on a stunning Saturday afternoon walk around sunset, the sky was a beautiful red. I stopped by the Tammisalo canal for a few minutes which was still frozen but beginning to thaw very loudly.”
“It gets really dark in Eskdalemuir. In winter it is sometimes so dark and foggy that you can literally see nothing. Once or twice a winter I step out my back door and can hear the sound of geese flying and honking directly over head. They feel really close. This can last for hours and is wonderfully creepy as you can never actually see the geese. We call this Goose Night.”

Bells (church and cow) in the hills of Flüeli-Ranft, Switzerland in the evening of 6th December 2022 – by Charlie Shackleton
“There are three churches within earshot of the spot where this recording was made, in the Swiss village of Flüeli-Ranft, and their bells overlap but do not synchronise. A local told me that this is intentional, to ensure their distinct timbres can be clearly distinguished…When all three churches fell silent, I was lucky enough to capture another set of bells—those worn by a herd of cows, invisible to me from my perch above the village stream—until the entire scene was drowned out by an overhead plane.”
Crackling fire and chimes, London, UK on 9th December 2022 – by Eleanor McDowall
Snow falling on the canal, London, UK, near midnight on Sunday 11th December 2022 – by Eleanor McDowall

“The snow is not as gleaming and beautiful as on the first day but the CRUNCH underfoot is at its peak!”
“Listening to the snow fall on the surface of the water as I walk home. The white blanket underfoot softening the sound of the city.”
“There are three churches within earshot of the spot where this recording was made, in the Swiss village of Flüeli-Ranft, and their bells overlap but do not synchronise. A local told me that this is intentional, to ensure their distinct timbres can be clearly distinguished.
I was reminded of a wonderful Swiss film I saw earlier this year, Unrest, set in a 19th Century mountain town in which four marginally different time zones are observed simultaneously: one for the factory, one for the train station, one for the post office, and one for the church.
When all three churches fell silent, I was lucky enough to capture another set of bells—those worn by a herd of cows, invisible to me from my perch above the village stream—until the entire scene was drowned out by an overhead plane.”
“A traditional Ukrainian Koliada song – traditionally sung house to house, like a Christmas carol. This group of Montreal Koliada singers rehearsing for the Christmas season was founded by Natalia Telentso and Eli Camilo, of the band Murmurosi.”
“We keep a beehive, just the one in our back garden in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. we are about as far from any coast that you can get in the country, to my eternal disappointment. We are in our third year and on our second colony. The first perished in the winter. This one is a swarm that moved into the empty hive. They have been quite productive with honey though, but also producing three swarms of their own. They can also be a bit feisty when working with them!
Usually they are hunkered down by this time of year, but with the unseasonable weather and temperatures, the girls are still foraging and returning laden with pollen. Also we are still having regular emergences, indicating that the queen is still actively laying.”
“After 4 hours of walking in the forest, some friends and I reached Cajón del Azul where the ice-cold waters of Azul River have carved deep into the stone over millenia. Although Cajón del Azul is a very popular place for tourists during the summer months, we found a secluded spot to rest and record some audios while we drank some “mates” (a traditional infusion in Argentina). I was impressed by this loud non-stop roar the cascades made and by the fact that this sound probably was, to the local fauna, as permanent as the Andes Mountains themselves. Throughout this 40 min recording you can quite barely hear our voices or the birds’ chirping over the deafening deep roar of the waters.”
“An enclosure with about a dozen captive pigeons in a park who are fluffing their feathers and flying around with sticks.”
