A significant portion of our conversation centered on the continuing proliferation of AI in consumer products. We noted an increasing sense of "AI fatigue"—the saturation of artificial intelligence in nearly every product and announcement. Although I am personally intrigued by developments in AI-generated video and imaging, especially from Google and Meta, I also find the AI trend overwhelming at times. I am even considering subscribing to Google One’s AI Premium offering to further explore these capabilities, particularly for personal creative projects.
We also speculated on potential announcements from Apple’s upcoming WWDC, especially regarding artificial intelligence and whether Apple will finally deliver tangible AI features, following a less-than-smooth rollout of “Apple Intelligence.” I expressed hope for hardware updates, such as a refreshed Apple Watch Ultra or a more affordable version of the Vision Pro headset—rumored to be called the Vision Air.
I noted that I recently began revisiting older episodes of this podcast, some dating back to 2008. I’ve started re-editing and publishing select episodes as audiograms. One of these featured an interview with the developers of Google Earth for iPhone, recorded in early 2009—just six months after the App Store’s debut. It was particularly meaningful to hear the voice of my late friend Mike Morton, one of the app’s original developers.
We also touched on some of my ongoing technology experiments. I’ve been attempting to repurpose a 2019 AMD laptop that no longer supports Windows 11. My initial plan to install ChromeOS Flex was thwarted by hardware incompatibility, so I’ve shifted my attention to Linux Mint. Although I encountered issues related to UEFI preventing boot from a USB drive, I plan to revisit this project soon
Jon offered a compelling perspective on the evolving role of AI in higher education. He discussed how he and other faculty are adapting to student use of AI tools such as ChatGPT, emphasizing the importance of transparency, responsible use, and pedagogical innovation. We concluded the episode with a broader reflection on the societal implications of AI, particularly the concern that up to 50% of entry-level jobs may be impacted in the coming years. As someone no longer in the workforce, I observe these shifts with a mix of concern and curiosity, especially regarding how younger generations will navigate such disruptions. We acknowledged the historical cycles of technological change—from calculators and word processors to broadband and mobile computing—and how each brought both fear and opportunity.

MobileViews mini-podcast 47 is a 2 minute recording testing the new iOS 18.1 Phone Call Recording feature. It is an iPhone to iPhone call. I used the 15 Pro Max's built-in microphone to while Jon Westfall used the iPods Pro 2 mic. At the start of the recording both Jon and I heard a low volume "This call will be recorded" message.Duirng the call recording my display showed an audio volume graph, call duration, and a red button to stop recording without dropping the voice call. Despite also using an iPhone on his side, Jon did not see any recording indication after the brief start of call notification.
After the recording was stopped, an M4A audio file and an embedded text transcript was saved to the iOS Notes app. The transcript identifies the called party (Jon Westfall).

For this in-person podcast at Bo's Kitchen, I'm joined by my former co-worker, Al Bonilla, and a former contractor, Mark Savage, who worked with Al on me on a very large two-year project. The main purpose of this podcast (other than having lunch with friends) was to test using a NAKVMN USB-C Desktop Conference Microphone to record an in-person three-person podcast since my wireless lav mics are limited to recording two people. The conference mic was plugged directly into an iPhone 15 Pro Max using the Just Press Record app. I used Adobe Podcast Enhance set at 27% enhancement to clean up the sound a bit while leaving some of the background restaurant ambient noise. The enhanced audio was run through Audacity to increase the volume - since Adobe Podcast Enhance reduces the volume while cleaning up the audio.

This podcast with frequent podcast panelist Steven Hughes (who was visiting Hawaii on a work trip) is actually more of a recording exercise/test. It was recorded on the road in a car using a pair of Airhug 30 wireless lavalier microphones connected to a receiver on an iPhone 15 Pro Max using the Just Press Record app. The audio was first processed using Adobe Podcast Enhance set at 5% and the further processed with Audacity to reduce the lower frequencies (bass) and increase the high frequencies (treble). I also increased the audio volume since one of the side effects of using Adobe Podcast Enhance is a significant volume reduction.

I'm joined by frequent panelist Paul Lawler. We recorded this podcast in person during lunch on Aug. 4 at a restaurant to test my Airhug 30 wireless lavalier microphone set. The mic's built-in noise reduction feature was not good enough for this environment. So, the audio was post-processed using Adobe Podcast Enhance set at 35% strength. I also had to increase the volume after Adobe's post-processing using the Open Source Audacity software. Paul Lawler helped me test using Google Meet to record a podcast using its built-in recording feature. It was supposed to be a 3 to 5 minute effort. Unfortunately, one of the extensions in Google Chrome blocked video from me and audio from Paul to me. Fortunately, it occured to me to run Google Meet in a Chrome Incognito window which would not have any extensions. This worked. However, we noticed well into the mini-podcast recording session that Paul's video was not transmitting. This was fixed by his turnng video on his end off and then back on.
This was not exactly a frictionless exercise. Fortunately, it was a valuable learning exercise. We also discussed the friction involved in using Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Apple Facetime, Descript, Riverside.fm, and Adobe Podcast Studio beta to record podcasts with remote participants.

In this mini-podcast I'm joined by frequent guest co-host Paul Lawler. We recorded this in-person in a busy restaurant named "Loco Moco" while eating lunch to test the Maono wireless lavalier microphone pair with a USB-C receiver. This mic set has built-in noise reduction which I augmented by post-processing it using Adobe Podcast Enhance set at 50% enhancement. Also included/spliced in are a few seconds of raw audio from a standalone voice recorder to give an idea of the ambient noise level in the restaurant during the podcasting session.
Paul (an avid amateur astronomer) provides information about the upcoming total eclipse on April 8, 2024 and the unfortunate news that we, in Hawaii, will not see much of this eclipse (17% obscuration). We also discuss some of his recent 3D printing efforts. One of his projects, an old style UK Police Box, bears a strong resemblance to an important object in one of our mutual favorite TV series: the BBC's Doctor Who.

This podcast's discussion may sound a bit unusual. There's a reason for that. We've been using Adobe Podcast Studio "beta" since late last summer. In general, it has worked pretty well although we've encountered a few bugs along the way. However, we ran into a really unusual error recording this podcast. The panel consisted of me (Todd Ogasawara), co-host Dr. Jon Westfall, and guest panelists Frank McPherson and Don Sorcinelli. However, for some as yet unknown reason, Don's audio track was not uploaded. Fortunately, Adobe let me know about an undocumented debugging tool that let met salvage the remaining tracks. I brought these tracks into Audacity and deleted the silent sections which should have contained Don's contribution to the discussion.

The earlier Absgeega wireless lavalier mic I bought worked well with Android devices. However, when using an iPhone or iPad, the recorded volume was extremely low. After noting this in a 3-star Amazon review, Absgeega contacted me and offered a refund. However, since I was able to use it to record in-person podcasts using an Android-based Pixel 7a, I turned down that offer. They then offered to send a newer model after it became available. The Absgeega K61 appeared a few days ago. This mini-podcast was recorded outdoors using it with an iPad mini 6 and an audio recording app named Just Press Record.

In this podcast, Todd Ogasawara's guest is Kieran Garcia, Microsoft Senior Modern Work Specialist. They discuss Microsoft Copilot, Loop, and Designer. All are in preview releases. And, interestingly, Loop and Designer previews are currently only available for consumer subscriptions (vs. enterprise/government).
I noted the low audio volume and muffled sound quality of the ABSGEEGA wireless lav in mini-podcast 35. In this podcast, I used the Just Record This app to record the audio on an iPad mini 6 (instead of an iPhone) to test the app's transcription feature. I used Audacity to try to deal with the audio recording issues to process this podcast. There is, however, a short 5 second segment at about the 10 second mark of the podcast that let's you hear unprocessed recording. The volume is so low that it might seem like silence. I also recorded about 30 seconds of audio using the iPad's built-in mic for the last part of this mini-podcast.

This week Todd Ogasawara is joined by Jason Dunn to reminisce 25 years of Windows CE/Mobile/Phone as well as looking forward on mobile technology to come.
Something weird happened during the recording process, however. The Audio HiJack audio-flow template that I've used to record hundreds of previous podcasts only recorded what Jason said. The good news is that I mostly asked questions and provided a few discussion prompts. Moreover, Jason is an excellent extemporaneous speaker. So, you can guess what I said. I removed the blank audio spaces (silences) during the segments I spoke.
