Make a Difference: Recent Episodes

Mark Quinn

Each of us always have a choice on how we respond to situations and move our lives forward as we see fit. New Year's lead many of us to think about a reset or change to lead to improvement (AKA: resolution). We can get "stuck" sometimes and producing these sessions are my way of helping me get "unstuck" and to be mindful that I have a choice. Even if I don't make a choice, I still have made a choice.

Published Monday through Friday, these sessions are 60 seconds or less and somewhere between mindfulness and reflection. Starting with a quote and a quick thought, Make a Difference just might become a daily stop on making us both a better version of ourselves; one day at a time.

Welcome back to Make a Difference.

Today's quote states:

“There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.” ― Buddha Siddhartha Guatama Shakyamuni

The author spoke about doubt creating the break up of relationships.

It is important to consider that doubt can manifest itself in many ways and looks that are different for each of us. Do you pause during the day to consider what your doubts may look, sound and feel like?

Doubt, in this quote, represents the lack of confidence or uncertainty that can plague our thoughts and emotions. It's that nagging feeling that something may not be right, leading us to question ourselves and others.

Understand that doubt erodes the trust and connection between individuals. When we doubt someone's intentions or truthfulness, it becomes difficult to foster meaningful relationships.

On a personal level doubt acts as a thorn by causing discomfort and internal conflict. It can lead to stress and anxiety as we constantly question ourselves and others. As a sword, doubt can have a lethal impact on relationships, potentially causing irreparable damage if not addressed. Remember that relationships include the one that you have with yourself.

To overcome doubt, we need to start with self-awareness. Recognize when doubt is arising and explore its underlying causes. Open communication with others can also help dispel doubt and foster understanding.

Doubt may be a natural part of life, but by acknowledging its presence and working towards fostering trust and communication, we can protect our relationships and lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

Allowing a moment before you start your day to reflect on your feelings and state of mind can go along way toward heading off the dangers of doubt. If you would like to dive deeper on this, consider listening to the show entitled: Approaching Mindfulness and Stilling The Mind

Welcome back to Make a Difference.

We have all heard the statement about "Don't assume, it will make a" well you know the rest. It really is worth thinking about.

The human brain relies on learned experiences that become patterns of behavior to figure out what to do when it is presented with the same situation in the future. We learn what happened when we did something and if effect the brain assumes it will happen again; and, as a result acts accordingly. Did anybody touch the hot stove?

This can be lifesaving when one encounters Ice on the sidewalk, but it can be a real challenge if you are trying to unlearn a bad habit or pattern of behavior.

Steve Maraboli states in the book Life, the Truth and Being Free that “How would your life be different if…You stopped making negative judgmental assumptions about people you encounter? Let today be the day…You look for the good in everyone you meet and respect their journey.”

The challenge is to consciously pause the learned behavior long enough in some situations where you are able to consider an alternative that may serve you better and take a note to allow reflection is needed.

This takes time and effort but may offer growth when you see the need for change. Take a moment and count to ten the next time you have an impulse and see if you have a better opportunity before you.

That is what I am thinking about today.

Welcome back to make a difference

Today's pressures that society presents are daunting. Keeping up with work, family and personal requirements are often more than a 24 hour day can accommodate.

We have spoken about planning and ways to capture ideas for make improvements in your future by working in small prioritized steps.

Letting go of the past and not fretting about the future are also important issues to consider. You have planned your why and how of your future; don't sweat it.

You cannot change your past. Other than looking at it to consider changes in your present; it offers no real value. You cannot change it. One must adopt a baseball closers mentality; once the game is over, forget it. You can only influence your next start.

Considering how you approach your present is the value that can give you peace of mind and reduce the stress. Control what you can control in the present and work toward the end your day.

That is how you define your success. Following this on a daily basis will take care of the future.

Today's quote sums this up by stating:

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.” – Dalai Lama

That is what I am thinking about today.

Welcome back to make a difference.

Why do you get up in the morning? Sounds like a simple question, but what if your answer is "because I have to". That does not sound like an exciting day is ahead for you.

Getting to your why is another way of looking at what your purpose is. Doing this type of activity gives you a feeling of accomplishment and a sense of moving forward in things that matter to you.

Many people discuss doing this because of the sense of self satisfaction; but I believe there is another reason to pursue focusing upon your why.

Let's face it, not everything always goes your way. Each of us has to find something that will drive us forward when the wind is not at our backs.

People discuss looking at others inside your industry, company, and work teams who are moving the way you would like to and model their behavior and methods.

Today's quote reminds us that there are addition places to look for innovation. Dunkin Wardle states:

Innovation often comes from looking outside your industry"

Getting outside your comfort zone allows you to examine things with a new point of view because you cannot assume that you know everything from experience. Just that little nudge may be enough to capture a new point of view that you can find value in and apply to your success.

Many people may choose the Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Simon Sneaks of the world. There is value there. That being said, with today's expansion in podcasting and/or Youtube, there are many, many new points of view being added to the over all collection of ideas online every day.

Welcome back to Make a Difference

Over the last several episodes, creativity has been discussed in one phase or another.

Today's quote by Alan Alda shares why creativity is so personal. He states:

“The creative is the place where no one else has ever been. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself.” — Alan Alda

An individual's creativity is something they alone can experience. It generally involves getting into a space where others may experience it as ideas; but inside your mind, it is sometimes uncomfortable and can give you a feeling of being "out there"

If you can get over the isolation and the feeling of being uncomfortable, your inner space can be quite fun! Don't judge yourself harshly and allow the ideas to flow and discover what you like, then work to improve it.

Welcome back to Make a Difference

A real challenge to creativity and implementation is the pace of today's society. Increasing challenges and demands are lengthening our workdays. Demands from family are ever present. Where does one find time to schedule in to allow their imagination to run and dream?

Henry David Thoreau states that“The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” In today's world, we have. a really large canvas with all sorts of information at our finger tips on demand.

As cool as the connivance of instant gratification can be, it also serves as a major distraction. Seriously, who has not started look at something on the net and wondered how it became after midnight just that quick.

Allowing your mind to wander is not time wasted as many would believe if you have scheduled that time for it in the 1st place. I make it a point to allow myself to meditate and also allow my mind to wander before I get out of bed in the morning. This is planned for and scheduled to not interfere with my day. I can tell you that this is some of the most valuable time of the day. The wandering time can allow your brain to process, consider and in some cases create new thoughts that can be very valuable to my self improvement.

Do you allow time for your for thoughts to wander and create your next mental masterpiece? If you are, share what your recent canvas may include in our speakpipe message system. I would love to hear from you.

In our last episode our discussion centered around the choices we make leads to change in our lives.

I wanted to focus upon that a little further and provide the "why" on the value of thinking about this. Today's quote states:

“Your life is a result of the choices you make. If you don’t like your life, it is time to start making better choices.” I would love to credit this quote but it is Anonymous

The hardest part of getting started with change is having the courage to take the 1st step. Momentum always keeps you going and it can even increase speed; but that 1st step take the most effort.

One must consider how dissatisfied you are with the current state of affairs and use that dissatisfaction to provide the motivation to change.

Welcome back to Make a Difference

We spoke about don't wait to get started with an idea in our last podcast. The time will never be right.

That leads to today's quote from Teddy Roosevelt that states:

Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.

No high quality idea is going to be able to thought through, designed and implemented in a single sitting. This often leads people to put it off because of the perception of "I don't have enough time".

Roosevelt's point has merit.

You may not have enough time to complete the idea, but let's unpack his process for consideration:

  1. Do What You Can - at a minimum

Capture the idea and general thoughts while it is fresh in your mind. Write down the "why" you thought this was an important idea while the ideas is fresh and clear.

  1. Where you are

There is no reason you cannot take 60 seconds to dictate your idea into your cell phone right where you are.

  1. With What You Have

Capture the idea with a voice recording where you can speak in real time and sort out the details later. Capturing the idea on the go can be done with cell phones quickly. Dictate your self a text.

Another Track can be using the email address Trello offers that puts the dictation right into your cards to be sorted laster. Tell your phone to send an email to trello and speak your idea. Send and your done till you have time to work on it in more detail.

Welcome back to Make a Difference.

We have been on a hiatus for quite a while and I have reached a point where I believe that I can return to the regular production of the podcast and keep up with the daily schedule.

Today's quote from Napoleon Hill states: “Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.”

I think if represents the right frame of mind to start a new

We can always wait for the "right" time, however there really is no right time. The correct time to start something is when the idea is "hot" and you in the flow with your idea.

If you want to hear more about being in the flow, check out the work of Mihaly Csikezentmihaly and his work on Being in the Flow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihaly_Csikszentmihalyi

Consider what waiting for the right is really a defense mechanism that people employ to avoid actually getting to the work at hand. By putting it off, one does not need to get to the real work at hand; DOING SOMETHING!

By putting it off the idea can fade along with impulse that lead you believe it was a good idea in the 1st place. These can allow other ideas to take their place and the ideas you had fades in to the past.

As you look toward capturing ideas, I would encourage you to write it down while the idea is strong in your mind. I use Trello to capture my ideas where I can add additional notes and sort ideas at later date. This allows the idea to be captured and then focus on steps to move it forward. You can lean more about Trello in the show note link below.

Let bring our ideas out of retirement. You have something to offer and help someone else and can do it by just moving forward with your ideas to make your world a better place. Let's start today to make a difference

120 -“Choosing a goal and sticking to it changes everything.” ~Scott Reed

We have been examining the ways to deal with ideas and actually act upon them to make a difference.

In show 118, we discovered that the time will never "be right"

In show 119, We discussed capture of the idea while it fresh in your mind.

Today's quote from Scott Reed shares:

“Choosing a goal and sticking to it changes everything.” ~Scott Reed

Prioritizing a goal among your to do list and stepping through the planning can be real challenge if you have not developed any structure to do it.

Graphic organizers can be a real benefit but are slow and bulky in today's world. One organizer that has been used often to add clarity to priorities is the Eisenhower matrix. You can find a link in the show notes to get a free version of this and use it if you wish.

I think the advantage of the Eisenhower matrix is that you are able to see organize material in a visible way that allows for quick processing. I generally keep mine visible in a monitor so that when I have completed a task, it is visible and allows me to see what is next. This is the "sticking to it" part of today's quote. Organizers become not only a planning tool, but a reference tool to avoid distractions or forgetting things.

How do you go about planing and implementation of your ideas? Leave suggestions and comments using speakpipe. I would like to lears tips and tricks from you that make a difference.

This month on make a difference, we are going to focus our studies upon creativity and innovation. As I said on the primer I shared with you last week, our society has had to become a lot more creative and innovative over the last 12 months in dealing with the Covid-19 Crisis. In doing so, we have the potential to continue to make a difference if we don't allow fear to reign in our skills.  Today's quote by Joseph Chilton Pierce asks that we examine the difference between being creative and living a creative life. He States: There is a big difference between being creative and living a creative life. Being creative is personal and allows me to look at different points of view and imagine change.  Until I have the courage to share those thoughts and work on changing things as a result, I am not living the creative life.  Support this podcast

How do you define creativity? Our second term for February will be Innovation. I really believe that both of these terms have taken on a new meaning and level of intensity over the last 12 months. We as a society have had to become much more innovative and creative on how we go about our daily lives; be it getting the basics to our home or becoming creative in the manner we handle our workplace, and the stakeholders within it. Society has been dealing with very heavy levels of stress due to the Covid virus situation and the continuing increase of transmission and infections. State and local governments have been in-acting various levels of restrictions in response. Some of these have had a direct impact on individual livelihoods; in addition to the personal loss of friends, family and one's personal health. Elements of fatigue has entered the equation due to nearly a full year of disruption has taken place. Politicians have begun to not follow their own guidelines. This is leading to increased feelings of resentment among the electorate. Adding still more stress to the issue is the political stress that lead to yesterday's violence at the Capitol building. The media has been on a 24/7 loop showing images and reporting very scary stories that many people are unable to stop watching. You can see in many ways the impact this stress is having on people. “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety. Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in. Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This new day is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on the yesterdays.” – Ermson Support this podcast

Welcome back to Make a Difference. In the month of February we will study attitude. Now that I have become aware of power that I always have a choice, the choices that I make can have dramatic power of the attitude that I approach the day with. Today’s quote from Gandhi sums this approach up very clearly and needs very little reflection to get the point. I believe is makes a great thought to start of our month’s reflection on attitude. We have come to the end of January and that marks the end of the study of change. I think this quote makes a good summary of our study this month. It comes from Steve Maraboli who is quickly become someone I am seeking out to read more often. “There are times in my life when I have been medicine for some while poison for others. I used to think I was a victim of my story until I realized the truth; that I am the creator of my story. I choose what type of person I will be and what type of impact I will leave on others. I will never choose the destructive path of self and outward victimization again.” ― Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience Support this podcast

“Changing is what people do when they have no options left.” ― Holly Black, Red Glove Today's quote offers a great reflection for those of us who resist choices and change.   It has been stated early in the podcast that one always has a choice and that even refusing to make a choice is still a choice.  It was discussed with a quote from Covey that going with the flow generally leads downward and not where you want to go.  issues and conditions won't go away because we ignore them, they continue to grow and develop without your input and influence.  Pressure builds and eventually, one is going to have to change. The discussion examines the 3 ways we look at the need for change. Support this podcast

“If you choose to not deal with an issue, then you give up your right of control over the issue and it will select the path of least resistance.” ― Susan Del Gatto Approaching the end of January, it is not longer enough to exercise the concept of choice.  We know by now that choices must be made in order not to go with the flow.   Not dealing with the issues does not stop the issue from progressing onward on its own without your influence.

“Maturity is when you stop complaining and making excuses in your life; you realize everything that happens in life is a result of the previous choice you’ve made and start making new choices to change your life.” ― Roy T. Bennett The month of January has focused upon change.   The study has shown that with effort and steady study, the ability to make choices improves and the confidence that you gain in yourself improves as a result.   With this new found confidence, I have realized that complaining in frustration, often internally, about situation does not serve me.  I am finding that if I take that energy and move it toward new choices and get better solutions as a result. Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thought. John C. Maxwell This upcoming week draws January 2020 to a close.   It is often the case that the best intentions of the New Year's resolution to change has worn down as we reach this point already in January.     I took a moment on Twitter and examined  #NewYearsResolution for a few moments and wonder how the commitment of many tweets are holding up at this point in the month.  I believe that part of the challenge of holding up with a resolution for change is planning out the steps for reaching the goal.   It's not enough to hold up a lofty goal and aim for it every day with out a plan of how to accomplish it; its just too big.    Taking the time to break the goal up  into bite size pieces is the key to accomplishing the goal as we discussed in episode on January 7th, Am I Doing This Right? where we discussed using goal charts. Taking my own advice here, the podcast is going to focus upon a new topic for the month of February and that will be attitude.  Support this podcast

I use an analogy about a box when I teach and it goes along with today's quote about the comfort zone.   The classroom has square tiles in the carpet and I walk along the perimeter of the square and identify it with my students.   This is a square I have walked for many years in this classroom and I know it well and I know every inch of it.   I tell the students about the great things that have happened in the past as I explored the box.   I struggle to tell them about recent experiences, I have been with the company for over 7 years.   We discuss living in the comfort zone and how you have to be willing to continue to expand your box and develop your skill set if you want to continue to grow in our industry.  Growth is a goal that only comes from working at something and being willing to be uncomfortable. I had shared early this week in the Bring Your Dead episode that many people choose to remain in a mindset that they cannot change their position, they are stuck. Today's quote by Roger Crawford asks me to review that thought and understand that challenges are going to happen no matter what in life.  They come in all different shapes and sizes for each of us; we all have them and nobody escapes them and I must accept mine. What we do have control over is if we choose to accept the feeling of defeat that can build up as we face our own personal challenges. Support this podcast

“‎Today is a new day. It's a day you have never seen before and will never see again. Stop telling yourself the 'same crap, different day' lie! How many days has that lie stolen from you? Seize the wonder and uniqueness of today! Recognize that throughout this beautiful day, you have an incredible amount of opportunities to move your life into the direction you want it to go.” ― Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience There is a big difference between a a routine and repeating an unproductive pattern.  Often those stuck in a pattern are not looking at their goals and objectives with a plan for accomplishment, or looking to identify and savor the difference!  They are just going through the motions and things feel like the movie Ground Hog Day. Morning routines by comparison are thoughtful and mindful to set us into a focus train of thought to move forward with a purpose.  Support this podcast

Today's quote from Og Mandino reminded me of the classic Monty Python sketch from the Holy Grail: Bring Out  Dead. Today's quote flips that issue around in a great way for reflection: “What if you were wrong? What if everything you ever believed was a lie? What if you missed your opportunity because you didn't know your worth? What if you settled on familiar, but God was trying to give you something better? What if you decided not to go backwards, but forward? What if doing what you have never done before was the answer to everything that didn't make sense? What if the answer wasn't to be found in words, but in action? What if you found the courage to do what you really wanted to do and doing it changed your whole life?” ― Shannon L. “It is easy to decide on what is wrong to wear to a party, such as deep-sea diving equipment or a pair of large pillows, but deciding what is right is much trickier.” ― Lemony Snicket, The Slippery Slope A simple metaphor on choice always help focus me on the real decisions at hand.   The obvious choices are not often the ones that I struggle with, its the choices where both options have merits and drawbacks.   The real issue is that it may not become clear like wearing the deep-sea suit to the party until much later down the line.    This is why I enjoy a good game of chess, and I believe that it is a great analogy for life. The player makes choice upon choice that evolves to a position where you have to commit.  A good player is not only evaluating the individual choices but also the over all position.  It can be challenging not to get lost in the weeds, or get caught up in the details where your still able to see the big picture. Today's quote for reflection is: “If you are faced with a mountain, you have several options. You can climb it and cross to the other side. You can go around it. You can dig under it. You can fly over it. You can blow it up. You can ignore it and pretend it’s not there. You can turn around and go back the way you came. Or you can stay on the mountain and make it your home.” ― Vera Nazarian, The Perpetual Calendar of Inspiration Vera's Website can be found at: http://www.veranazarian.com/ (http://www.veranazarian.com/) I think that looking at challenges from different angles is important before making a choice. If you choose to walk around the mountain and examine everything from only the base, you are getting a one sided view of the situation vs looking at the view from the top. Have the courage to take the time to examine the possibilities and not just jump on the 1st choice that comes to your mind. Support this podcast
