August is a big month for debuts, and we have one of our own - listener Rob made his first appearance on the pod, to talk about Tuesday's defeat at Orient, alongside Ed who witnessed Saturday's glorious home win against Doncaster. Between them they discuss the switch from a back five to a back four, fizzy midfielders, and squad depth. Nominations are currently open for election to the new Trust Board, so we hear from Colin Everett and Shaun Johnson about their experiences over the last few years with the Trust, asking what skills they think are needed from potential candidates, and what might be the biggest challenges and opportunities for the new Board. #168 - Swindon win, and Newport City WomenAfter 167 episodes, Ep168 marks a bit of a new era for the 1912 Exiles....
We are delighted to announce that we have partnered with talkSPORT to be a part of their fan network of podcasts, hear more at the top of the pod.

It’s been SOME week for Newport County. We beat Wrexham at home, we had Manchester United RATTLED (for 21 minutes), Huw Jenkins has formally taken over the club, and the Supporters’ Trust held its AGM.
We also signed someone! So, no wonder this pod turned into a bumper episode. Jamie, Ian, Ed, and Jack all convened in the aftermath of that FA Cup game at Rodney Parade to chew the fat.

Yes yes, we know that there's the big victory over Wrexham to discuss – but we wanted to cynically capitalise on the extra interest around the Man Utd game, so we’ve created this big preview show. After years of him asking us to call him on a Saturday evening, he decided to call us! An absolute delight to have Rob Phillips, one of the premier voices of Welsh football on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Wales Sport - and a 1912 Exiles listener at that - join Jamie Harris for a chat.
A Newport-born boy, he shares stories about his time reporting on the club in the 80s; his interactions with the likes of Justin Edinburgh, Dave Boddy and Graham Westley; and in more recent years in the Flynn, Rowberry, and Coughlan tenures.
He also shares stories from covering some of our biggest games in recent years, including having to stand on a box to commentate on the Great Escape finale, and a run-in with Justin Edinburgh's crystal ball.
An enlightening, honest, and entertaining presenter, who leaves you feeling buoyed and optimistic, but mostly reminds you that it's just fun to watch football. (Rob, not Jamie.)

We've had a lot of fun making our close-season bonus episodes - but now it's back to business as our panel convene to preview what 2023/24 holds for Newport County AFC.
Rhys is on hosting duties, and is joined by Ian and Ed for the live record - and Jamie sends in his contribution from a piazza in Florence, surrounded by copies of the Gazetta della Sport like James Richardson on Channel 4 in the 90s (ask your parents, kids).

We continue our gentle summer stroll through off-the-pitch matters around football in Newport, with a genuinely heartwarming catchup with some of the County in the Community crew.
Over the course of a few hours at Rodney Parade, Ed chatted with Dave Lewis (Football & Education Programme Co-ordinator) and participants in the new Fit Fans programme which helps men and women aged 35-65 who are looking to lose weight, get fitter and lead a more active life. But as we hear, it's not just about that - it's also bringing people together for companionship and a bit of joy.
We also hear from CitC's Chief Exec, and County legend, Norman Parselle - a man whose enthusiasm and spirit is so good for the soul that he should be prescribed on the NHS.

We hope to have a new episode out in the coming days about last week's AGM and Trust meeting, and implications for County - but in the meantime, we've watched closely the takeover of the Newport Dragons and Rodney Parade by David Buttress, which was confirmed on Friday. The deal could change radically the landscape of professional sport in Newport, and the new owner is a man with big ideas.
Way back in January 2021, our Jack had a lengthy chat with David Buttress, and although the context has changed a little we felt it was well worth re-posting. In it, they discuss:

Another season is over, and there is plenty upon which to reflect. Rhys is in the chair for our epic end-of-season review, and is joined by Ian and Ed as they analyse Newport County's 2022/23 season in depth. We revisit the decision to sack James Rowberry and where things went wrong for him, and track the evolution of 'Cockball' under his successor Graham Coughlan. We were going to do a big "10 league games in" analysis, but due to factors this episode is just Ian and Ed talking through County's home draw against Carlisle and pondering how much time the result will buy for James Rowberry to get this side up and running. We do so with a huge debt to the Newport County hive-mind who helped to flag some talking points, so a huge thanks to those of you who tweeted us with your thoughts on the game.

Even the most positive podcast in Newport struggles to find much cheer in this one... After a dismal home defeat to Barrow, Rhys caught up with Ed and Ollie to sift through what went wrong and what needs to happen for things to improve. They address head-on the 'Rowberry Out' calls, consider whether experience is what's needed to steady the ship, and ponder whether Ed is changing his underpants regularly enough.

First up, we handed a 1912 Exiles debut to young Ollie Allen to talk us through the 3-2 victory against Portsmouth in the Second Round of the League Cup - and he doesn't disappoint. Then it's over to our old faithful Ian Street to tell us about the 4-0 thumping of Harrogate, and seemingly to try and get the word "charcuterie" into the recording as many times as possible...

Following the joy and relief of three points at Rodney Parade against Tranmere, Rhys sat down with Ed, Ian and Martyn to unpack what we can deduce from our opening five games. We also take advantage of Martyn's massive football brain by having a 'deep dive' into the tactical approach taken by Rowberry this season and examine what's worked and what hasn't.

In what we fear may become a regular feature this season, Ian managed to find some positives from a Newport County defeat. On a day Ian described as being "hot as Hades", the Exiles failed to come to the boil, so Ian's daughter's first County game was something of a disappointment.
We have two home games coming up next week, against Salford on Tuesday and Tranmere on Saturday, so we'll have a full panel discussion next weekend to explore what we've learned from County's first six matches. Stay tuned!

In the first segment of the episode, we've got clips from regular contributor Ian as he recounts the tale of County's win at Scunthorpe in the latest instalment of a feature we've decided to call "Ian Street hits the north". The project was set up to create a place for adults to improve their mental health and wellbeing through the power of football. We've taken a longer break than usual between episodes, to give us time to draw breath after last season's rollercoaster and to give the club time to make forays into the summer transfer market - and now we're back with a bang to go through all the close season news.

We analyse the incomings and outgoings and what they mean for our expectations of next season's County team, we discuss the arrival of a new Sporting Director, and we get over-excited about the prospect of away games to Harrogate, Sutton and Carlisle - there's a sentence we wouldn't have written pre-COVID.
