Last week we had a really special guest on this episode of the podcast: one of the best Trail Runners of the past decade, not only results wise but somebody who has inspired many on and off the trails and continues to inspire after she came back literally from the brink of everything ending after a race fall when her racing career and her life looked over. She had to dig deep, deeper then she had to ever go before on the path to recovery and she bounced back to the top of the Trail Running World. Last week we chatted to Hillary Allen. Hillary will be at EcoTrail Wicklow on September 30th in a few weeks time.

Welcome to the Episode 47 Highlights Show of the Trail Running Ireland Podcast!
A race like no other, and not just a race but perhaps the best team competition out there on the hills of not only Ireland, but dare I say it Europe. There´s a big field of 35 teams. A long attritional course of 8 legs over 104km. There´s the potential for disaster, theres the possibility of glory and that’s where we headed for in last weeks episode with an interview with the captain of the winning team, David Power from Rathfarnham WSAF athletics club. Everybody get your running gear on, lets go!
A reminder we would be very grateful if you got a chance to pop over to Patreon where the contribution of 3 euros a month helps keep us going. All the 3 euros add up and it just means we can allocate the time every month to produce the show so if you like what we do in terms of helping to grow trail running in Ireland or even just enjoy the company on the runs, we´d be very grateful if you pop over to our Patreon page when you can.

In episode 28 we had Kerry men Joe O'Leary and Kevin Leahy who recently completed what has been described as the longest hardest high level route in Ireland, The Iveragh Traverse. Kevin and Joe ran for 22 hours, facing all the elements nature could throw at them, sunburn and windchill, over 44 summits, 85km and 7,500m overall ascent and it’s a real pleasure to have them with us on the podcast.

Welcome to the Episode 26 Highlights show of the Trail Running Ireland podcast. The show is hosted by Eoin Flynn, UTMB Finish Line Race Announcer and 10 times Irish International Mountain Runner.
It’s was a sad few days last week on the trails and mountains of Ireland with the tragedy in the Comeragh Mountains and the very sad passing of Gillian Ryan after a tragic accident while out running, followed by fires in the Mourne Mountains and the National Park in Killarney with many hectares of natural landscape and habitat destroyed, so this week, the only thing to talk about, the only thing we want to about is, safety on the mountains.
Rene Borg from Running Coach Ireland will join us to talk to us about being in the right condition physically before we head out to tackle big mountain training sessions and for our feature interview this week, its great to have back on the show Simon Kelly. Simon, in addition to keeping us up to date with the latest stories, races and results on the Podcast, Simon is a regular ultra trail runner who tackles the hills almost always solo, he is the Race Director and Safety Officer for the Waterville Trailrunning Festival and he has worked with various Search and Rescue organisations and is currently an active member of the Iveragh Coast Guard Search and Rescue and Cliff Climbing Teams.

(41m20s) For this weeks special guest interview, we´re going to change pace a little bit. We´re going to talk to Micheal Kelly. Micheal's name might not be at top of race results lists at the moment, like a lot of our previous guests this year, but there was a golden period back in the mid 2000s were Micheal Kelly was regularly on podiums in road and cross country races around the country and also on the mountains.
He won the Irish Senior Mountain Running Championships and he represented Ireland and the green jersey with distinction on numerous occasions in major international championships.
But before his running career really took off, Micheal was an alcoholic and was in a very dark place. Running made a massive positive and life changing impact on his life and at the moment when things have been so tough for many people listening this year, hopefully Micheal's story will inspire and show that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark that tunnel may be.
