Holy wow its been too long! After a two month break- I turned 50 and Jamal became a Principal- we return to talk about milestones and new beginnings.
Avantis just launched "The Eduverse" – a ground-breaking new online platform that gives students access to a K-12 metaverse. In the Eduverse, students can access immersive, educational content and amazing VR experiences. They can interact with each other as avatars, all in a secure and controlled environment, inside and outside of the classroom.
In this episode, Chris Klein- head of education North America discusses how this web-based tool, which can be accessed on any device, including laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, phones, and VR headsets, including Avantis’ ClassVR headsets, and Google Expeditions kits. Teachers can also use interactive whiteboards or interactive flat-panel displays to allow an entire class to experience the same content without requiring 1:1 devices or VR headsets.
Eduverse is free to teachers, they can simply log-in using their existing single sign-on accounts (e.g. Microsoft & Google) and can immediately access a range of virtual reality content including Eduverse Expeditions, which teachers can use to take students on virtual field trips and collaborate with them in real time as avatars. Also available in Eduverse is Avanti’s World, the world’s first educational VR theme park, with hundreds of explorable curriculum virtual experiences.

Today we welcome Dr. Tim Holcomb, who is Founding Chair of the Department of Entrepreneurship, Director of the John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship, and a Farmer School Endres Associate Professor Fellow in the Farmer School of Business at Miami University. On the show we went into the history of the department, and their new class that focuses on economic placemaking and quality of life to attract and retain top talent.
Dr. Holcomb previously held the Jim Moran Professorship in Entrepreneurship and served as Executive Director of The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University. While at Florida State, Holcomb helped raise $100M to establish the nation's largest interdisciplinary entrepreneurship school, the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship. He earned his Ph.D. in strategic management and entrepreneurship from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, and he earned his bachelor's degree in accounting and information systems and his MBA from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. He received the 25th Annual Golden Arrow Outstanding Alumnus Award from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2005.

Since 2015, annual student demand for entrepreneurship courses at Miami has grown by more than 700% in credit hours (to 15,890 credit hours) and almost 450% in the number of students that take at least one entrepreneurship course (to 3,219 students).

I'm walking around Indianapolis, the city I've called home all of my life. The destruction and empty feeling is hard. There is a lot I have to learn, and I really need to listen and gain perspective. I was listening to Kevin Hart talk to Joe Rogan on his podcast. He remarked that too many people are complaining, and that we think being positive is "not cool," and being the contrarian and complainer is. Then it got me thinking about being positive, and dad jokes... enjoy.
Two weeks ago Jamal & I asked for feedback on our "what class would you invent or throw out" podcast. We got several good suggestions and emails, but one teacher, Matthew from Michigan, asked to be a guest on the show. We are happy he did. Matthew Barbercheck is in his third year of teaching industrial arts and computer-aided design at Republic-Michigamme Schools in Republic, Michigan, where he also teaches Spanish. Republic-Michigamme schools is a k-12 school with about 120 students. Barbercheck works with all grade levels from 6th-12th grade, often times in "one-room school house" scenarios of working with students across a wide range of grades and skill level at the same time. Barbercheck has already made a tremendous impact on the lives of his students at his small school in encouraging his students to learn from failures, and drawing upon collaborative methods of teaching. Sarah-Jane Thomas, PhD (@sarahdateechur) is a Regional Technology Coordinator in Prince George’s County Public Schools. Sarah is also a Google Certified Innovator, Google Education Trainer, and founder of the EduMatch project, which promotes connection and collaboration among educators around the world. Through EduMatch, Sarah has published three collaborative books, EduMatch Snapshot in Education (2016), The #EduMatch Teacher’s Recipe Guide (2017), and EduMatch Snapshot in Education (2017). Sarah is also on the leadership team of the ISTE Digital Equity PLN.
Sarah recently graduated from George Mason University with a doctoral degree in Education, and a concentration in International Education. She also holds a Master’s degree from Howard University in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.
Sarah was designated an ASCD Emerging Leader in 2016, and was named Prince George's County Public Schools Outstanding Educator Using Technology in 2015. She is also a winner of the 2014 Digital Innovation in Learning Award in the “Sharing is Caring” category, and was named by the National School Board Association as one of the “20 to Watch” in 2015. She was part of the Technical Working Group that refreshed the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Educators in 2016-2017, and in 2017, she received the ISTE “Making IT Happen” Award.

Stop binge watching and start networking. How and when to start. I got my start in 1994 when I cold-called a think tank in Indianapolis. Instead of watching more MTV (yes, that was a thing in 1994), I volunteered my time to network, and provide value to a company I believed in. It was well worth the price of a lunch.
