With the reveal of the new Atraxa, Grand Unifier card yesterday, many folks have wondered what a "Battle" card will entail. I dive into the new card type and provide some of my thoughts on what I hope Battle cards will be, the potential similarity to the Clash mechanic, and some of the implications of a new card type for both the game and Vorthos lore.

On this episode of the Fun Size Spotlight, I highlight a Dimir Commander from the original trip to Ravnica, Circu! Whenever you cast a blue or black spell, Circu exiles the top card of a player's library. When given the right tools, this deck can rip through either your or the libraries of your opponents and prevent them from casting meaningful spells with the same name.

"Power Levels" are often cited by EDH players trying to find a pod to play in, but such a subjective piece of criteria fails to address the complexity of an EDH game/pod. I argue that Power Levels do not exist and should not exist - instead, the Intent of a Deck (i.e. what the deck aims to do, how quickly it gets to a potential winning position, etc.) is far more important than a single number based on subjective criteria. Rule 0 conversations are critical in EDH and need to be had before every game.

Stax is a very misunderstood strategy in the EDH landscape, and is often cited as one of the least-favorite archetypes to play against at the majority of tables. However, Stax is a very viable strategy at the cEDH table through its disruption of opponents and furthering of your own gameplan. There are a lot of scary Commanders in the EDH landscape with a bad reputation. Cole from the Uncommon Commanders podcast joins the show to discuss how the "loudness" of Commanders can influence other players in the pod and what decks or strategies they use to counteract. We define "loudness" as how much value a Commander can create on its own without other inputs, as well as the relative floor and ceiling that a Commander has from first glance. We then discuss how loudness should be used as a topic of conversation during Rule 0 but is not an excuse to demean or mistreat a player - play against a Commander, not a person.

NeoRoyal joins the podcast to discuss Hatebears, which are cards which slow down your opponents while providing you with incremental advantage during the course of a game. Often found at the highest levels of 60-card Constructed play as well as cEDH, Hatebears often receive a lot of distrust because they are commonly associated with Stax strategies which many players do not like to play against. Fey Steed provides an interesting effect by offering temporary indestructibility to another one of your creatures, as well as a way to DRAW CARDS whenever a creature or Planeswalker you control is targeted by an opponent's ability. On this episode of the podcast, I discuss my use of a Play Log to record the results of each game of EDH that I have played in 2021. The Log is not only a way for me to see how well my decks have done across all games, but also can be used to identify decks that have become too powerful for my playgroup and thus see less use there. While this does not replace Rule 0, it does prove an interesting test in determining the true "power level" of my deck in comparison to the decks my opponents use.

Unloved Commanders unite! Commander content creator MagicalHacker joins the podcast to discuss his interest in building EDH decks with Commanders who most players overlook for one reason or another. He has compiled a list of all Commanders on EDHRec with less than 50 decks to their name, and has collected almost 50 decklists from various players using those Commanders. We discuss why we both enjoy building Commanders from this list and why players overlook these cards (flavor, not using all relevant text on a card, mana cost, etc.). We also seek to challenge why people overlook these Commanders and hope that we inspire others to build around these unloved Commanders.

On today's episode, I discuss "land-to-hand artifact fetches", which are artifact cards that allow you to tutor for a land out of your library and put it into your hand. While the gold standard of this effect is Wayfarer's Bauble because it acts to ramp you by placing a land directly onto the battlefield, many players may miss the potential of other artifacts which bring lands to your hand (in many cases for less cost!). I argue that ensuring that you don't miss a single land drop during the course of the game is on par with actively ramping because you are able to better keep up with your opponents by taking advantage of the 1-land-per-turn rule. In its own way, this generates card advantage for you as the player because you are able to ensure that there is a land in your hand (and it's even better in decks looking to get multiple lands onto the field in one turn!). I then use examples of my own Alela, Artful Provacateur and Titania, Protector of Argoth decks as examples of places where I run these fetches so that I can guarantee that I hit my land drops.

In the second half of the show, we discuss how WotC has increased the visibility of queer and trans representation in the Magic lore by not only including Niko Aris as the first openly trans Planeswalker, but has also utilized Niko as a major part of the advertising campaign for the Kaldheim set instead of a footnote. We discuss how representation can be crucial to bringing those who might not otherwise play into the game, which leads to a healthier overall playing community.

On this episode of Control Room, guest host Ryan and I discuss two ways of building decks. Planned decks are defined as decks that are mostly built in theory before the cards ever come together into deck form, such as a decklist or deck tech. Play-testing/chaotic deck building is defined here as the science of "What If?" building in that you have an idea and try to find cards that can work in that shell as well as those that may not have a defined home but can still be useful. We both use examples of our own decks throughout the episode.

In this episode, CoachJRo and I discuss the expectations players should have handy when they try to join an existing playgroup, whether over vEDH (video camera) or at their LGS/a MTG event along with expectations for how playgroups should interact with Rule 0 before starting a game. It's what you want to get out of the game that is important, not just "power level". JRo also discusses how to build and maintain a successful Discord server through his own experience, including cultivating a good active community along with remaining ever vigilant to keep the Discord a supportive environment for all users.

You read that right! White in MTG, especially mono-white, is widely considered the worst color combination in EDH because it lacks many of the same value engines that other colors/combinations have access to. Along with guest collaborators Peter (MonoWhiteBorder) and J Ro (CoachJRo/Unsummoned Skull), we tackle this misconception and outline several ways to generate card advantage in mono-White. White may require more set-up than other colors to gain value, but that does not mean it's weak or incapable of generating value. In other words, White is ACTUALLY GOOD if you want it to be good and can be quite fun to play.

On this episode, I welcome Chris, Your Commander Mechanic, to the show to talk about Technical Deckbuilding as well as some of our thoughts on the cards of Kaldheim and the set's potential future legacies. In the first segment, we go over Building vs. Brewing and the differences in how to go about optimizing a deck or brewing a deck with an interesting and unique concept. We use some of our personal deck builds as examples on how the two concepts can be very different or can share many of the same pillars depending on the end goal of the deck builder. Additionally, we use Shivam Bhatt's conversation on Twitter regarding what makes a deck "fair" vs. "unfair" as a benchmark for the conversation.
The second topic on Kaldheim goes over the controversy surrounding some of the Legendary Creatures in the set and how that has affected our format. We again use Shivam's conversation starter to discuss how stereotypes of Tergrid and Orvar, for instance, can be harmful no matter how the deck is built and how it is important to have a conversation prior to playing to determine expectations. We then discuss the return of snow lands as well as the set's potential legacy given Legendary MDFCs and the set's new Boast and Foretell mechanics.

Building a colorless EDH deck can be a major challenge given that colorless doesn't have the same arrangement of spells that the main 5 colors of the MTG color pie have access to. However, that is not to say that colorless decks can't be interesting and varied in their approach to the game. I use my current Karn, Silver Golem build to explain some of the challenges that I faced building the deck as well as the freedom I had to make the deck my own just using artifacts I had lying around in my collection. Karn is a very versatile Commander and can go in a number of different ways.

On today's episode, guest collaborator Ursa Bearwalker and I discuss his BEARS system for determining some of the different ways EDH players can analyze their decks/style of play beyond simply looking at established archetypes. BEARS stands for: Bombs, Electioneering, Aggressive, Restricted, Safe. Each category has its own unique traits that define how decks falling under that category operate, but decks can fall under multiple categories depending on its goals.

There are a lot of definitions for "jank" in the MTG Community, and a lot of them hinge on decks/strategies/commanders/cards that are deemed "unplayable" and "bad". I make my case as to why jank decks and cards can still be powerful in the right situations as well as FUN. We play this format to have FUN, so why always need to build the most optimal decks? Building janky decks is an interesting experience that I think more players should try - you won't know if you like it until you try it!

In 2020, Reserved List cards were being bought out at ridiculous mark-up prices. With the beginning of 2021, I decided to take a closer look at the market prices of some Reserved List cards in my personal collection and compare how much they are worth now versus what they may be worth in 6-12 months' time. I intend to return to these cards later to see if their prices have changed.
Battlecruiser EDH, per my definition, is a low-powered meta where pretty much every card ever printed can be viable in the right deck. I personally find this format very enjoyable because it allows for lots of 'ah-ha!' moments and tons of interaction.

Everyone has a different definition of what constitutes a "jank" deck. Using my beloved Kothophed, Soul Hoarder deck, I explain some of my criteria for how I build a jank deck and things to look for when building your own. These opinions are solely my own.
After playing a few rounds of Commander Legends sealed (6-booster pack sealed), I share my thoughts on why I really enjoy this format and the new options that it brings to the table.

A lot of Magic Social Media has gone ballistic over the reveal of the new "The Walking Dead" Secret Lair cards, which for a variety of reasons can cause concern to players across multiple formats. While I am not going to disagree with the issues that have cropped up over morality of character decisions, issues with Magic's ongoing story (with crossovers with TWD) or the direct-to-players card sales from Wizards, I do not believe that Secret Lairs or unique mechanics on Secret Lair cards break tradition with other major IPs that do similar things to boost sales. I also don't believe that we should discourage people from buying these cards based on this issue - if people want to buy these cards, then they should be able to play with them.

With the release of the new Zendikar Rising set, many EDH players are left wondering if Mass Land Destruction needs to be a new staple in their decks to hose Lands Matters decks. I lay out my reasoning for why this is an overreaction since no one deck dominates the format and because MLD is frowned upon for a reason in most play groups since it sets everyone back, not just those abusing their lands triggers.
My thoughts regarding calls from the MTG Community for Wizards of the Coast to remove the Reserved List of cards.

A staple of my earliest MtG decks from when I began playing the game, the Reaver has always had a special place in my decks running black. The Spotlight covers its inclusion in my decks as well as why a 1/2 for 2 mana that gives two bodies is worth it.

The first episode of the Triple Threat Deck Challenge follows me as I build a Selesnya (Green and White) EDH/Commander deck with Asmira, Holy Avenger as my Commander. The deck seeks to use strong and cheap enchantments with good Enter the Battlefield effects to maximize value, and has ways to recur those cards back from the graveyard. We also want to build a large token army that we can either use to attack our opponents or to sacrifice to make our Commander stronger.
I used the following three cards for the concept of this deck:
Silverglade Pathfinder (Creature)
Cleansing Meditation (Sorcery)
Ashnod's Altar (artifact)
I also outline some of the other cards that I would include in this deck. However, the complete 99-card decklist is not available because I encourage listeners to build their own version of the deck as they see fit. I am just providing a basic template for some of the cool things that can be done with this deck concept and this Commander.
