A podcast to help you live an attainable vegan lifestyle. We’re not the ripped influencer vegans you hear about on other podcasts. We’re just some ordinary people, living in the south, eating plants, and loving animals.
In our newest episode, we dive deep into the future of veganism, exploring the trends, challenges and exciting developments that might lie ahead for vegans worldwide. Research points to the growing demand for plant-based alternatives and the environmental impacts of animal agriculture becoming increasingly apparent. The vegan movement is poised for significant growth in the coming years. Using research, we discuss how the future of veganism is shaping and how we hope the world of vegan food, business and culture changes in the coming years.
We recently discussed the history of veganism and thought it only right to dive into the future of the vegan world.
Technology and Veganism One key area of focus is the intersection of technology and veganism. As new technologies become more accessible and affordable, they have the potential to revolutionize the food industry. This advancement could make veganism more mainstream than ever before. We discuss the many possibilities of how technology will shape the future of veganism but of course, we want to hear from you. How do you see technology shaping the vegan world?
Of course, challenges remain. Despite the scientific consensus on the benefits of plant-based diets, there are still many obstacles to advancing veganism. This episode will explore our thoughts on what we hope for the future and what our research taught us.
Join us as we explore the future of veganism and how we can all contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable world.
We're at it again, and this time, with a Kombucha taste test, you have to watch and listen to! If for nothing but our facial expressions and reactions. Seriously, this is one of the funnier taste tests we've done and it felt like torture sometimes. Ultimately, you will hear about three kombucha drinks we liked and three we absolutely hated.
Kombucha, the probiotic-rich fermented drink, has become a health sensation and a staple in many gut-loving vegan households. In our new episode, we embarked on a taste test journey that Meg has avoided since we started the podcast and David has craved!
In this kombucha taste test, we feature six different varieties of kombucha, all with the base flavor of strawberry. We aimed to explore kombucha by trying various brands and uncover which ones tasted the best to us and which left a less-than-pleasant impression. If we like it, you figure you will as well.
David was excited to try all the options and Meg was scared. For good reason. But we went about each sampling of strawberry-infused kombucha with an open mind. The six varieties showcased the creativity of kombucha brewers from around the country, featuring unique blends of fruits, herbs and flvaors.
However, the verdict was split right down the middle. Three of the kombuchas proved to be delightful, offering a perfect balance, while the other trio left us cringing. You'll have to listen and watch this episode to see which brands won our kombucha taste test and which ones absolutely failed.
Here are the six kombucha options we tried: * Brew Dr. Strawberry Fileds * Ca. Craft Babe Kombucha Maui Wowie * Humm Probiotic Kombucha Strawberry Blossom * Synergy Raw Kombucha Strawberry Serenity * Rowdy Mermaid Kombucha Strawberry Tonic * Health-Ade Kombucha Strawberry Glow
While taste is subjective, we hope that sharing our opinions might help you find a kombucha that fits your taste buds. This was a serious reminder that not all kombuchas are created equal. Whether you're a seasoned kombucha enthusiast or a curious vegan looking to incorporate this fermented beverage into your diet, this kombucha taste test is a valuable guide to finding the strawberry-infused kombucha that suits your palate.

We dove deep into the roots of the vegan movement, uncovering some interesting stories, stats, and fun facts that neither of us had any idea about until this episode.

Picture this: Meg quizzing David about the evolution of vegan living, from the first mentions of avoiding animal products to the other names considered besides vegan. You'll learn a lot, just like we did, while also enjoying a little game of "Does Daivd know the history of veganism?" If you're a real fan of the pod, you already know the answer to that!

If you're new to the plant-based lifestyle, you've probably been asked your reasons for going vegan. This episode is your handy guide for replying to that coworker that scoffs at your lunch choice. For the most part, there are three main motivations. People choose to go vegan to save animals, to save the environment, or to save their own health.
Our Reasons For Going Vegan In this episode, we go more in-depth on our whys for choosing the vegan lifestyle and our whys for staying vegan. The reasons you stay vegan can be very different than your reasons for choosing to be vegan. And that is true for Meg! Listen to this episode to find out how.
Save the Animals We start this episode by discussing the main reason people go and stay vegan - the animals. Sometimes, it might not be their primary reason for choosing to eliminate animal products from their life. But it ends up being what keeps them living this lifestyle. Stopping the abuse, torture, and murder of animals is the backbone of the vegan movement. In this episode, we share a lot of statistics but the ones in this section are the most heartbreaking. Like this one - it is estimated that every year 80 billion land animals are slaughtered for food. That statistic alone could be the reason someone goes vegan.
Not everyone decides to change their lifestyle for animals, and weirdly, some vegans judge other vegans if animal protection isn’t the main reason they go plant-based. Personally, we here at The Average Vegans don't care why you go vegan. We don't care if you do it to piss your parents off. Or if you want to follow your favorite celebrity trend. We don't care if you take small steps or big movements toward eliminating animal products from your life. We're just thankful you did. And so are the animals!
If you want to hear more animal abuse statistics, you should check out Episode 63 which talks all about the dairy industry.
Save Your Health The health benefits of a vegan diet vary from person to person. Studies have shown that a plant-based diet lowers blood pressure, cholesterol, rates of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer.
In a 2009 study, 43% of participants following a vegan diet reduced their blood sugar-lowering medication, compared with only 26% of participants who followed an ADA-recommended diet. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5466941/
Reasons for Going Vegan: Save The Environment If the stats about animal abuse and slaughter weren't bad enough, we also discuss the destruction of the environment thanks to animal agriculture.
One stat that might shock you is that animal agricultural production is estimated to be responsible for 80 percent of global deforestation. Keep listening to hear more reasons for choosing the vegan lifestyle.

All About Darë Cheese Listen, when we say Darë Cheese is the best vegan cheese, we mean it! We both swoon over this mouth-watering dairy-free cheese. In Episode #80, we interviewed Gwendolyn Dare Hageman, the Founder of Darë Cheese. This fantastic plant-based cheese company is based in Asheville, NC and is currently available in 30 states. By May, it will be available in 46 different Whole Foods across the southeast.
As with every interview, we start off learning about Gwendolyn and her vegan journey. We quickly dived into the reasons behind the creation of her one-of-a-kind vegan cheese and what her plans are for the future. This might be the most you've ever heard David and I gush over a guest because we genuinely believe in her products. You should have seen us run when we saw their booth at the 2022 Georgia Veg Fest.
People Over Machinery This vegan cheese company takes pride in its team and its products. As they say on their website, “with a team of dedicated and passionate individuals, Darë chooses people over machinery and passion over everything to make a product infused with love and intention.” Truly they are one of a kind!
Listen to this episode to learn about Gwendolyn's favorite product, the most popular one, and what we can look for in the future. You can explore their website to learn more.

Episode 79 is a must-listen! We had the privilege of interviewing Corrine Baker, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Outsiders Farm and Sanctuary. We saw this fantastic sanctuary at the Georgia Veg Fest and immediately knew we had to have them on the podcast. Every time we walked past their table, there was a crowd of people asking questions. We love to see others caring so much about our local animal sanctuaries.
All About Corrine Baker As we do with every interview, we start of learning more about our guest. Corrine Baker is a joy to chat with, and she's full of positivity and good vibes. You're going to like Corrine before you ever hear about Outsiders. In this episode, you'll learn about her vegan story, her tips for new vegans, and how Outsiders originated.
Outsiders Farm and Sanctuary Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary is a 501 (c) 3 Farm Animal Sanctuary specializing in potbelly pigs but they also have other kinds of animals. Their mission is to help "the unimaginable number of potbelly pigs in need of placement in the state of Georgia." They provide the right kind of food, necessary medical care, and vetted placement through their adoption program.
Corrine Baker and the staff at Outsiders do more than care and love for these animals. Education is a massive part of this organization. They focus on teaching proper pig care education to animal control organizations, adopters, and animal shelters. The benefit this education offers can help save thousands of pigs' lives.
In this episode, you will learn about their future plans, how you can volunteer, cute stories about their adorable animals, and so much more.

Listen, you might be doing dry January, but at some point, you're going to go out with friends. You need to know an excellent vegan beer, wine, and champagne. Of course, you should always use the Barnivore app to find the perfect vegan drink. But this episode is your playbook for having a vegan drink with no worries! And we both had a little bit to drink in this episode! That's always a good time.
Isn't All Beer Vegan Beer? Simply put, no. In some cases, animal products are used to create beer, and a lot of vegans don't realize this! Ingredients like isinglass and gelatin are sometimes used as fining agents. Whey, lactose, and honey are also added as ingredients. We go into detail in this episode about what to avoid to make sure you're drinking vegan beer!
You can learn more about vegan beer here: https://academy.plantbasednews.org/blog/can-vegans-drink-beer
What About Vegan Wine? You will also learn in this episode that some wines include fining agents made of animal protein like egg whites, gelatin, casein, and isinglass – obtained from the swim bladder of fish. That's right, we said fish. If for no other reason, that alone is why you should listen to this episode.
You can also learn more here: https://www.insidescience.org/news/why-wine-isnt-always-vegan
Is Vegan Champagne A Thing? Champagne is similar to wine in that there are fining agents that make some bottles of bubbly not vegan. If you're anything like us, you will shudder at how much fish is used in the making of wine and champagne. When you want to celebrate a great accomplishment, listen to this episode so you reach for a vegan champagne instead of one filtered with fish.

Why do we talk about mental health? In this episode, we discuss why it's ok not to be ok. Speaking about the importance of mental health is essential to us. We hope this episode helps you as you venture into the new year and tackle new obstacles in life.
Important Note: By not ok, we are not saying having a mental health crisis or feeling like unaliving yourself. More so, those times when we are sad, down, slightly depressed, and just overwhelmed with life. If you feel like unaliving yourself, please call 988 or visit https://988lifeline.org/.
Society's Obsession with Positivity It's not often that you hear someone say it's ok not to be ok but we want to push the importance of knowing no matter what, there is always an answer to your problems. The push to be happy, joyful, and positive all the time is everywhere. We are taught by teachers, parents, TV, and the internet to only present a positive and upbeat persona. This is toxic positivity, and we are not here for it! Instead, we encourage you to feel your actual emotions, deal with them in healthy ways, and work to find a practical solution if at all possible.
Important To Feel Other Emotions- Why It's Ok Not To Feel Ok As the movie Inside Out taught us, it's crucial to feel other emotions besides just happiness and joyfulness. Other emotions are just as valid. The reality is life can be sad, overwhelming, and stressful. Fighting those emotions or hiding from them is a normal reaction, but we want you to focus on the fact that it's ok not to be ok. You don’t have to positivity your way through every situation.
Your Brain Lies To You One of the most challenging lessons Meg has ever learned was that her brain could lie to her and she would fully believe it. Just feeling an unpleasant emotion can sometimes spiral us into thinking that’s all we’ll ever feel. Realizing that a thought is a lie your brain is fabricating is hard to fathom, let alone make it into daily practice.
Meg gives an incredible tip on how she handles her lying brain!

This year's Georgia Veg Fest was truly a blast! On Sunday, December 4, we gathered with countless other vegans in a new location to support local vegan businesses, hang out with like-minded folks, and eat a ton of vegan food. The presenting sponsor of the 2022 veg fest was the Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary. There's actually a new episode about this inspiring sanctuary on the podcast! Check out Episode 74!
There were also tons of great speakers sharing vital information for all vegans and non-vegans alike: https://georgiavegfest.com/georgia-vegfest-speakers/
Our Veg Fest Strategy We take the annual Georgia Veg Fest very seriously. We have a whole strategy! Of course, we do! The first lap was just to see what was out there, who the vendors were, and where we had to stop on our next laps. There was one company that caused us to stop our research lap! Listen to this episode to find out which company that was and why.
The second lap is all about the food and the third is all about the merchandise and even more food! We make sure we don't miss a thing!

In Episode 75, we chat about the amazing Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary in Good Hope, Georgia. We recently volunteered at this farm and had the best time. Helping the staff create a lovely, safe, and fun environment for the rescued animals was the highlight of our day.
About Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary: Farm of the Free is a local animal sanctuary located on a 10-acre farm about 60 miles outside of Atlanta. Their mission is "to create a space where every being feels safe to be exactly who they are." We definitely support any organization or sanctuary with a mission to save and protect all living beings.
Currently, Farm of the Free has donkeys, cows, chickens, sheep, and goats. While living their best lives, each animal lives on a beautiful piece of property in designated areas. Each space is built to foster a happy, healthy life for these animals. This sanctuary plans to "offer self-care classes such as guided meditations, yoga, cooking classes, etc., as well as classes that raise our awareness about living a peaceful, vegan lifestyle with an emphasis on unconditional self-love & personal growth."
About the founders: Carmen and Greg Pope have been vegan since 2013 and soon after they decided to create the Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary. In this podcast, we give a more thorough explanation of how this fantastic organization came to be and how they have continued to help animals for many years.
We also discuss their farm tours, how to volunteer, where to donate, and how to shop their branded products. All of which help contribute to the continued goodness of Farm of the Free.

In episode 70, we try 9 different options in a non-dairy milk taste test. Of course, we also got this on video so check out our YouTube channel! We know you all love when we do taste tests and we were curious ourselves about a variety of non-dairy milk options. Meg really wanted the banana milk to be delicious and spoil alert - she did not like it!
Why you should choose a non-dairy milk option? Of course, we had to cover the reasons why the dairy industry is pure evil and why dairy is also horrible for your body. We recently published two different dairy-related episodes so if you want more information after listening to this episode check out Episode 70: Dairy-Free Options - Vegan Approved and Episode 63: Say No To Dairy.
David and Meg have different taste buds so these taste tests can get super interesting as we debate which options are delicious and which ones we despise. And there are definitely some vegan milk options we did not like!

To further our obsession with fruit, we got a box from Fruit Hunters, a Miami-based company that ships rare, tropical fruit all over the United States. We have reviewed a similar company in the past (see episode #29). We jumped at the chance to try another fruit company. And we are so glad we did!
What We Got From Fruit Hunters: In this episode, we try 8 different fruits from Fruit Hunters and while some are delicious, some are not our favorites for sure. We share our opinions on each fruit in this podcast episode and on our YouTube channel! We tried:
The only con we found with this fruit subscription company is the same con we experienced with Miami Fruit. Neither company tells you what you receive in your box so you just have to guess, use their website, and Google to figure out what you're eating. That's super inconvenient. But other than that, we love Fruit Hunters and wish them lifelong success in spreading their love of fruit.

Being a Florida girl, Meg misses seafood. So she jumped on the chance to do an episode all about vegan seafood. This is an area of food she thought she had to give up when she went vegan. Thankfully, there are a lot of options in the world of vegan seafood. We even give you a tip about an amazing, traveling, vegan seafood truck!
Why Say Goodbye to Seafood? We recently did a whole episode about the documentary, Seaspiracy. That episode is highly recommended before you listen to this one. The effects of the fishing industry are almost beyond comprehension to those of us that value the life of animals. We give you some of the most shocking facts from the documentary in our episode. Besides the environmental effects, we also go into detail about dangers to your body when you eat seafood from our polluted waters. For people that have a hard time saying goodbye to seafood, have them watch that documentary. Then, listen to our episode about Seaspiracy and this one about vegan seafood options. They'll never look back.
All About Vegan Seafood Recently, we tried every dish from the Oh My Cod Vegan Seafood Truck in Atlanta. To put it in the simpliest of terms, it was absolutely divine! This truck travels around the country so visit their website to find their upcoming locations. When we visited Oh My Cod Vegan Seafood Truck, we tried every bit they had to offer. We ordered:
The options for plant-based seafood come from some interesting places. Vegan shrimp and many other plant based seafood options are made from Konjac, or elephant yam, is a seaweed-based hydrocolloid. It mimics the taste and texture of a real shrimp and is sometimes used as an alternative for animal gelatin.
Listen to this episode to find out what plants are used to create vegan crab cakes, fish, and lobster!
Brands that Offer Vegan Seafood We are beyond thankful for all the vegan options available at grocery stories nowadays and online so that we can cook some of these options at home.

If you're anything like Meg, you love the thrill of a great thrift find! In this episode, we talk about our favorite thrift tips and how to make the most out of every visit to the local thrift store. Meg is a veteran thrifter and David is a newbie so this is a fun episode for everyone. While thrifting doesn't necessarily have much to do with being vegan, the reasons behind thrifting are very much intune with vegan efforts to save the planet.
The Why, Where, and Whens of Thrifting In this episode, we start by discussing the reasons why shopping second hand is essential to helping eliminate waste and pollution on our planet. As well as where to find the best thrift stores in your area and even the best times to thrift. Yes, there is a bit of a science to thrifting!
By thrifting, you are doing one of the 3 Rs - reusing. And if you then donate the item after you are done using it, it continues to be reused!
Thrift Tips Thrifting takes work. You have to be ready to dig and use your imagination. Meg gives some amazing tips on how to imagine all the uses of an item and great ways to envision using that piece in your home or your wardrobe. Of course, we always want to hear from you so send us a message on Instagram to give us your favorite thrift tip.
The Vegan Aspect
There are materials to look out for when thrifting that might make a perfect piece not vegan. David gives a great tip on how to make that piece work!

In Episode #63, we talk about the cruel realities of the dairy industry and reasons why you should say no to dairy. Of course, David dives deep into what consuming dairy does to the human body. If you don't know, get ready to be shocked and broken by this episode. It was very hard for Meg to get through without crying.
Why You Should Say No To Dairy The reasons why diary shouldn't be a part of your diet range from the torture and murder of cows to it gives you a serious stomach ache. Saying no to dairy can be easier if you take some time off from it and see how your body reacts. We would both be shocked if you didn't feel better giving up dairy. In this episode, David goes into detail explaining how bad these products are for your body.
Besides your physical reactions, the dairy industry tortures mother cows until they are of no use. Don't get us started on what happens to the baby cows. You'll have to listen to this episode to learn that. It's hard to hear but necessary to learn to say no to dairy.
We also talk about the environmental impact of the dairy industry in this episode. These stats are shocking and below is a graph we discussed.
Non-dairy Options We briefly discuss the non-dairy options you can use to replace those dairy choices. There will be an upcoming episode all about non-dairy products you have to check out. In the meantime, listen to episode 27 to hear our vegan cheese taste test or check us out on YouTube to see us try these options in person.

In Episode #55, we sit down to discuss a topic that has been an ongoing issue ever since they went vegan - being the only vegan at work! This situation can be a real pain and cause some awkward situations. We hope this episode helps you develop ideas on how to handle situations where you're the only vegan at work.
Office culture has moments where it's centered around food. For example, there are catered lunches, communal kitchens, holiday treats, and lunches with coworkers. It can be difficult to be the “odd one” out when you’re the only vegan in an office. Most offices will at least try to accommodate you, especially at first. In this episode, we help you navigate some specific situations that involve being the only vegan at work.
For the most part, it's up to you how this situation is handled and what you get out of it. Your office will only do so much and is really only required to accommodate to an extent. After that, it's up to you and this episode will help you prepare for to make the best out of the situation.

Episode #43 is a fun one! We've been anxiously awaiting filming our vegan burger taste test and we finally did it. We invited two of our good friends over, Nathan and Brittany, and they helped us taste test 10 different vegan burger options. We even recorded all 4 of us trying each burger so check out our YouTube channel.
Each burger was cooked the same way on a grill and we tried them plain by themselves and on a Dave's Killer Bun to see the difference. No condiments! We took into consideration the uncooked smell, the cooked smell, the texture, the taste, and the after taste. You know, all the important factors. And some of those factors drastically changed the scores.
10 Vegan Burger Options * Beyond Burger * Impossible Burger * Trader Joe’s Protein Patties * Trader Joe’s Turkeyless Protein Patties * Gardein Be’f Burgers * Dr. Praegers Perfect Burger * Lightlife Plant Based Burgers * 365 Plant Based Burger Patties * Incogmeato Moringstar * Simple Truth Emerge Chick'n Patties
After trying way too many options, which burger do you think won our taste test? We were all pretty unanimous with our favorites but you'll have to listen to this episode or watch our YouTube video to find out which burger was the best. The best part is the burgers we didn't like! Promise those parts of the video are hysterical.

If you have a Costco near you, you have to listen to this episode. Every location is different so you may not find the same products at your Costco.
There are certain areas of Costco that are must visits like the produce department full of fresh bulk fruit and vegetables. You should also stop at the cold milk area and find the big containers of almond and cashew milk. You'll find more plant based milks in the other store so keep your eyes out. If you love nuts and seasonings, you can load up on a variety of both at Costco.

We’ve talked about going out to eat and having a vegan BBQ in our last two episodes but today we’re talking about going to events as a vegan.
Each event is different, however, there are some common practices that will make it much easier to go to events as a vegan. In Episode #34, we discuss specific events and how you can make the most of those moments.
Weddings are a beast all their own and can be very difficult events to attend as a vegan. Birthday parties are a bit easier and can be great events to share some vegan goodies. If you plan to attend pool parties, sporting events, or festivals this summer, you have to listen to this episode to make the most of your fun in the sun!
Most of all, be flexible and let people know you're vegan. Give them a chance to be accommodating. No matter what, when going to events as a vegan, surround yourself with people that care about making sure you have something to eat.

It's summertime and it's time to have a vegan BBQ! We're all spending more time outside, enjoying the warmer weather, the company of our friends and family, and of course, our favorite summer foods! When you go vegan, you might think having a BBQ is a thing of the past.
Pad the invite list with vegan and non-vegan friends alike! People and food make a vegan BBQ into a memorable party. Make it a pot luck and take some of the pressure off your shoulders. Try a new side or a fun dessert. Create a boozy drink or get creative with a delicious mocktail.
Turn a regular vegan BBQ into a burger taste test or give out awards for 'Best Side'. Whatever you do, take the pressure off and just have fun with it!

As the United States starts to open up again, friends are going out to eat for the first time in over a year. If you make plans to go to a restaurant, as a vegan, you will encounter two different scenarios.
#1 - You have no choice in what restaurant you go to
OR
#2 - You are part of the restaurant picking decision
Going out to eat with friends as a vegan can be a tricky situation sometimes. In this episode, we give our tips and tricks to make the most of your next dinner date. No matter what, do your research beforehand to have the best experience. Talk to your fellow local vegans and get their best recommendations.
Sometimes things won't go as well as you'd like and you might end up with a weak salad or some limp fries. But you're at that dinner to be with your friends so focus on them. And as Meghan says, when there aren't any other options, just drink more!
When you have more control, you have the ability to spread some vegan love to your friends. Make the most of these wonderful moments when we can safely experience time with our friends and family. We encourage you all to eat more vegan food, laugh with people you love, and experience life.

Why it’s important to get involved in animal rights? As vegans, being involved in animal rights is an important aspect of living this lifestyle. If we don't help animals, who will? Getting involved doesn't have to involve a giant protest. Animal rights activism can be done in a much smaller scale and still make a difference. Explore below to see our recommendations on different ways to get active.
How to get involved? Whether you go big or start small, activism includes many different activities. Your efforts, whether major or minor, will make a difference in the lives of animals.
One option is to join your local animal rights activist group and in Georgia, where we live, that would be GARP. Visit their website or find your local group. You'll find a lot of helpful information, upcoming events, and tips on how to make the biggest difference possible. Volunteering at local farm sanctuaries such as the Full Circle Farm Sanctuary in Georgia is another option.
As you listen to this episode, you'll notice that quite a few of our recommendations for animal rights activism involve encouraging others to follow a vegan lifestyle. Spreading the vegan love is accomplished in many different ways including sharing our podcast with your friends and family or bringing vegan treats to family gatherings.
Give this episode a listen to find different ways you can get involved in animal rights activism.

Listen, we love you all but we recorded Episode #29 for us. We have wanted to try some new fruits for a long time and we finally made it happen. Thanks to Miami Fruit, we received a big box of beautiful, delicious tropical fruits directly to David's door in Georgia. Because we are both vaccinated, David brought the fruit to Meg's house and we recorded ourselves taste tested each option. You have to check out our YouTube channel and our Instagram account to see all the videos.
Miami Fruit is a South Florida based company that harvests the best tropical fruit possible from local farms including their own. They sell variety boxes of exotic, tropical fruits and specialty boxes that focus on one fruit. Learn more about this amazing company on their website.
What Fruits Did We Receive In our large box, we received 10 pounds of tropical fruits including:
Our Scoring System We scored each fruit 1 to 10 with no specific criteria. If we liked the taste and texture, we gave it a higher score. If it was just blah, we scored the tropical fruits a little lower. And we were, of course, brutally honest so you'll definitely know if we recommend the fruit or not. Let us know which fruit you think you'd like the most from our Miami Fruit box.

Have you seen the new Netflix documentary Seaspiracy? Created by the same crew of the 2014 documentary Cowspiracy and directed by Ali Tabrizi, this new film focuses on our oceans and the destruction we are causing to sea animals.
David and I watched Seaspiracy separately so that we wouldn't influence each other's opinion on this new documentary. During this episode, you'll learn our thoughts on this film, how it affected us, and what we learned.
The Seaspiracy documentary drives home the heartbreaking facts about the relentless harm caused by the fishing industry. This long ignored industry causes the death of countless sea animals whether intentionally or inadvertently. And you'll learn some shocking facts as you watch this documentary. Like that there are 150 million tons of garbage floating in our oceans or that more sea turtles are murdered by fishing nets than by plastic in our oceans.
We encourage everyone to watch Seaspiracy, especially with your pescetarian friends. To learn more about this new Netflix documentary, visit their website here.
In our mini episodes, we will cover the best new vegan products we’ve recently tried and interesting news articles we've stumbled across. A shorter dose of The Average Vegans Podcast, we will publish these mini episodes every so often so keep your eyes open for new ones.
Vegan News In this mini episode the discussed some new product launches, surprising collaborations, and a sign that people may be moving toward more sustainable plant based seafood options. With so much coming out and people waking up it's only going to get better.
New Products We’ve Tried Naturally we took the opportunity try new products between mini episodes and we would be remiss if we didn't give you out opinion. Even better we had to jump on a TikTok trend and try out a vegan version.
Vegan Books We recently interviewed Peggy Brusseu. Her book recently launched so we had to promote her one more time.

This is the episode you've been asking us to make! In Episode #27, we taste test a wide variety of vegan cheese options to give you our opinions. We definitely let you know which vegan cheeses we love and which ones we will never buy again. You know us, mouthy as always.
How We Picked The Cheese David and I did our shopping at different times but we both went to Sprouts because they have such a great selection. David also grabbed a Kroger option for a more common option. We choose some of our favorite go-to vegan cheeses and some options we haven't ever tried before. We went into this with opposite favorites and ended up agreeing on most of the options. And surprise - we recorded ourselves on video taste testing these cheese options! Check out our YouTube channel to watch us eat way too much vegan cheese and give our honest opinions on all of them!
Vegan Cheese Options In this episode, we tried 10 different kinds of vegan cheeses in several different forms. From cheese sticks to slices, we also tried some shredded cheese and even a creamy cheese. You have to listen and watch this episode to see our opinions of these 10 vegan cheese options:
Field Roast Chao Creamy Original Slices
Field Roast Chao Tomato Cayenne Slices
Miyoko's Organic Cashew Milk Mozzarella
Miyoko's Farmhouse Cheddar
Daiya Deluxe Cheeze Sticks
Follow Your Heart American Style Slices
Violife Smoked Provolone
Vevan P'Jack-Shred
Simple Truth Hot Pepper Cheezy Slices
Treeline French- Style Cheese Creamy Scallion
Years ago, there were very few vegan cheese options but now, you have tons to choose from and they are available at lots of different kinds of grocery stores and online. You might have to try a few to find the ones you like the most but this episode will definitely help.

In Episode #25, we discuss a few of our vegan unpopular opinions. You might disagree with some of these stances and that's totally okay. We expect some hate mail! We don't all have to agree but we hope this episode helps you question some of your opinions and gets you discussing things with fellow vegans.
Some of our thoughts on vegan issues can be polarizing within the community. One of our vegan unpopular opinions centers around why people go vegan. Neither of us care why you choose this lifestyle, we just want you to eat more plants and eliminate animal products from your life. Going vegan can be a process and not an all or nothing situation. We know these unpopular opinions are going to ruffle some feathers. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the topics we discuss in this episode so please let us know what you think!

We know you are all going to love this episode.

In Episode #23, we talk about some of our favorite, easy vegan meal ideas. Over the recent weekend, we got together in a safe, social distance way and exchanged meals that we made for each other. It was a joy to see each other and even more so, to feed each other!
Vegan Meal Ideas Taking into consideration meals we have shown interest in, we each picked recipes that the other wouldn't normally make for themselves. Meg picked a recipe for David that she has made for many get togethers in the past but by some luck, David has never tried it. And David choose a recipe that included an ingredient that Meg never attempts to cook.
Shepherd's Pie Shepherd's Pie is one of Meg's favorite vegan meal suggestions. The base of Meg's recipe includes meatless crumbles. You can choose the brand of your choice but Meg usually picks the cheapest option available. Lentils are also a delicious added bonus to the meatless base. While you're in the frozen area, grab a few bags of vegetables. Meg usually includes a corn, carrot, green bean combo and this time she added some spinach and zucchini. The more veggies, the better in this vegan meal!
Next make your favorite vegan mashed potatoes. Meg makes hers with vegan butter, cashew milk, and a tiny bit of vegan mayo to create the creamiest mashed potatoes. Mix the meatless base and veggies together. You can add vegan cheese as well! Top it with the mashed potatoes and heat the dish up in the oven for 15-20 minutes. This comfort food is a vegan meal to drool over and David loved it! You will as well!
Seitan Ribs, Air Fryer Tofu, and More! David made a vegan meal that made Meg squeal with excitement. He started with some amazing seitan ribs grilled to perfection that Meg fell head over heels in love with! And he didn't stop there. Using Trader Joe's chicken-less spice mix, David also created some perfectly seasoned, crispy tofu bites. His tip is to use extra firm tofu to get the best results with these air fried bites. They were perfection! David also made roasted sweet potatoes and grilled romaine lettuce creating a well balanced, super flavorful, and highly nutritious meal. He drizzled a spicy Caesar dressing on the lettuce that added a lovely kick to the meal.
As we continued to chat, a few more recipes popped up in conversation that we know you're going to love. These vegan meal ideas are ones we have tried before and return to over and over again. And we hope they help you continue to try new things and create delicious, unique meals.

In this episode, we discuss our health goals for 2021. Instead of New Year's resolutions, this year we focused on creating some specific goals for our health that we think will greatly improve other aspects of our life as well. We both know the importance and power of creating goals especially when they center around your health. In such a scary time, it's important to make our overall health a top priority.
Our Goals We didn't discuss these goals before recording the episode because we didn't want to influence each other. Oddly enough, some of our goals still overlapped! We didn't just focus on physical exercise and losing weight like most people do when they create resolutions or health goals. Instead, we focused on the activities we need to do to get us to our healthiest. From improving our sleep to falling more in love with cooking, we tried hard to create goals that will lead us to our most fulfilled self.
Physical and Mental We both know the importance of making our mental health just as much of a priority as our physical health. This year, we made goals centered around giving our minds just as much love as we do our bodies. We encourage all of you to incorporate some mental health goals into your life. You'll see the benefits instantly!
We hope by sharing our heath goals, we will help you find yours. In 3 months, we will record an update episode where we let you know how we're doing on our journal to better health. Message us on social media or email us to let us know what your health goals are for 2021.

In Episode #7, we offer tons of tips on how to have a successful and delicious plant-based Thanksgiving. Pulling on personal experience, our advice focuses mainly on the food but also on fielding the inevitable questions that come from eating vegan at a food-based holiday.
Where and With Whom As you can know, Thanksgiving definitely requires preparation. The amount of prep needed will depend on where you plan to spend Thanksgiving and with whom.
If you plan to join others for the holiday, a conversation needs to be had about what food will be there and what you need to bring for yourself. In this episode, we also cover various ways to handle conversations with non-vegans during this family holiday and how to share the vegan love while keeping your food safe from cross contamination.
If you're spending your holiday with those in your household, you have more control over your vegan Thanksgiving experience. You're less likely to have to answer a million questions and you can spend the day cooking vegan Thanksgiving dishes in the comfort of your own home.
Veganize Thanksgiving No matter where or with whom you are spending your vegan Thanksgiving, you need to eat just like everyone else. In this episode, we spend far too long discussing how to make your favorite Thanksgiving dishes vegan. Whether you’re a new vegan or an experienced one, you might be surprised by some of the products we discuss this week. In Episode #6, we cover food you didn’t know is vegan and food you didn’t realize isn’t vegan. Both categories have products that might surprise you. Use this episode to help you find new products and eliminate the non-vegan options.
Food you didn't know is vegan Of course, our lists don't include every possibility. We created this episode to focus on some unexpected items to grow your vegan pantry. Listen to this episode of The Average Vegans Podcast to hear the answer!
Food you didn’t realize isn’t vegan This group of products might be more surprising than the last. There are a few food items on this list that some people would never guess weren't vegan. Whether the food is on here because it has gelatin or dairy or even crushed bugs (ew!), these products have ingredients in them that are far from vegan. We discuss snacks, sauces, drinks, and even a canned item.
We hope learning about food you didn't know is vegan and food you never realized wasn't vegan will help you as you shop for new items. Keep listening to this episode because we also discuss some ingredients to look out for as you walk the isles of your local grocery store.
Non-Vegan Ingredients To Look For Additionally, we discuss some tricky ingredients and words that make finding vegan items a bit more difficult. Some food products include terms that sound vegan but definitely aren't. Make sure to not allow the packaging to tell you if something is vegan but rather, you need to read the ingredients carefully in order to determine if a product is vegan. This section of the podcast will help you spot those ingredients.
