Local writer, and WRBH volunteer, Michael Tusa sits down to share an excerpt from his latest book, Chasing Charles Bukowski.

Michael T. Tusa Jr was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and, as was traditional, is named after his grandfather, who was born in Sicily. Through a fluke (someone was not paying attention!) his father was also named Michael, or as spelled in Italian, Michele. As a baby his father or mother would drop him off each morning at the Catholic convent next door to their home for the nuns to take care of him. He grew up as a lover of all types of music and of books and, for reasons he still ponders today, in open adolescent rebellion against the world around him. An earring, which seemed a necessary statement, soon followed along with a refusal to cut his hair. But as Albert Camus wrote the rebel is simply one who seeks a different order than the one being imposed on him. That different order was found, for him, (and remains so) in the ideas and affirmation from the authors he read and from the boundary breaking music of the 60's and early 70's in rock and jazz. Along the way he abandoned his Catholic upbringing, studied theology and a bit of Buddhism on his own, tended bar, drove a milk truck, installed carpet, became a lawyer, taught at two universities, and tried to move further East in his thinking. After the end of a 19 year marriage he finally got that tattoo, and seeking to express a hoped for sentiment to live by for the stretch run of his life, it quotes Matthew in the King James Bible: "But I say unto you that ye resist not evil...." In other words stop fighting and lay down the sword. He has published numerous professional articles (alas he had to earn a living), a few poems. His first novel, Advancing on Chaos received an Honorable mention in the 2017 Great Southeast Book Festival and was one of the semi-finalists in the 2017 Faulkner- William Wisdom Creative Writing Contest. His first book of poetry is entitled A Modern Theory of Socialism. A Second Chance at Dancing, his second novel, is semi-autobiographical. His most recent novel, Chasing Charles Bukowski, was short listed as a novella for the 2018 Faulkner/William Wisdom Creative Writing Contest. All novels are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books a Million and Kindle.

Today we'll be presenting a radio performance of local playwright Del McNeely's new work An Atheist, A Priest and a Jungian Analyst Walk into a Bar. To help set the scene here's a bit of an introduction from the director:

The play is intended to explore the art of conversation among thoughtful people with different views, an art that seems rarely practiced today. This is not to say that I don't have strong preferences and moral values, but to recognize that the whole person as well as the whole community is made up of many facets that deserve to be considered and aired with respect. Jung's concept of knowing our "shadow" encourages us to increase awareness of possibilities, ultimately giving us greater integrity within a wider degree of consciousness. In this play the characters hear, argue, contradict, and accept each other, and they find ways to enjoy being together around music and light-hearted acts of kindness.

One tells the others’ story to the group, in first-person, as they heard it. As you hear your story as it’s reflected in a first-person account by someone else, an identity-merging effect is produced. The process also enables you to enter someone else's narrative, making it impossible to feel alien or Other.

Dr. Mahyar Amouzegar is Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of New Orleans. His last name means -teacher or scholar- since his ancestors were scholars of the Court. Amouzegar was born in Iran but grew in San Francisco with 6 other siblings. A mathematician/engineering by education most of Amouzegar's career has been spent in the national security policy analysis arena. He likes writing policy papers and has several to his name but loves nothing more than writing fiction! Amouzegar said " I believe I am a keen observer of human interaction and I love the notion of how we behave with each other and how sometimes what we think is not what we say. My father was an avid reader and he taught me to love books and appreciate the power of words."

"In my latest novel, 'Pisgah Road', I tried to examine strength and fragility of human interaction. We think words don’t mean anything, but they do. A friendship that should have lasted a lifetime is cut short because of a few worlds that should have been spoken."
