What’s the link between sex and mental health? Why is sex still a taboo subject in so many circles? What does it mean to be “sex positive”? What’s non-monogamy and why do we even need to know? We discuss all this and more in this special final episode of the second season of Body Cons, with sex educator, artist and body positive crusader Ruby Rare.
This is a bit of a feature length episode as we also share a deep dive into the BBC Two documentary Who Are You Calling Fat?, as well as some interesting thoughts on tattoos and body image, and a letter written by Nick Cave which is guaranteed to make you cry.

Magazines often get the blame for making women feel insecure, promoting unrealistic body types and narrow beauty ideals, and not being inclusive in the bodies they present in their pages. But what’s it really like in 2019? And what’s it like to actually work on a high end fashion magazine?
Terri Waters is a fashion journalist who worked at multiple glossy magazines, before leaving the industry to set up independent body-positive publication The Unedit.
In this interview Terri talks candidly about what it’s like to work on these magazines behind-the-scenes, how it made her feel about her own body, some of the examples of airbrushing she personally witnessed, and what inspired The Unedit in the first place.

‘The media’ is a catch-all term often blamed for the high beauty standards to which we hold women accountable, so what do two telly execs have to say on the subject? Plenty, as it happens.
In this episode of Body Cons we speak with Rosie Bray and Lucy Golding, the two execs behind Barefaced TV, which made Channel 4’s Naked Beach. We get into it on the subject of representation, diversity, the processes behind Naked Beach and what sparked the pair’s idea for the show in the first place.
It’s a fascinating listen if you want a behind-the-scenes insight into some of the conversations that happen in the world of TV – and how we, as an audience, have just as much a part to play in future change as those in the boardrooms.

Body Cons is back after a mid-season break for summer and we’re raring to go in this special Back To School catch-up episode where we share some brilliant stories on the subject of body image from the last month.
There’s no guest this week (we’ll be back with a brilliant guest on next week’s episode) but there is a mini Q&A with listeners, lots of inspiring chat to help us feel better in our bodies, and your regular mixture of high-brow and low-brow pop culture body image chat.

When it comes to knowing what we should and shouldn’t be eating, it can be a confusing business. There are lots of wellness myths out there, health food fads and junk advice which can prove to be the opposite of “healthy”.
We speak to nutritional scientist, chef and cancer charity ambassador Toral Shah, about the subject in this week’s episode of Body Cons. Toral shares with us the basics of what a healthy diet actually looks like, why there’s no such thing as a “one size fits all approach” to health, and how her own cancer diagnosis made her even more interested in what she was eating.

This week’s episode revisits the idea of toxic masculinity and the effect it can have on body image, as we chat to body positive activist, campaigner and influencer Stevie Blaine aka Bopo Boy.
It’s a great episode to listen to if you’re a parent to boys, or if you’re looking for ways to get teenagers to engage with the subject of body image. It’s also a very useful listen if you’re looking for ways to be a support to someone going through body image issues or dealing with an eating disorder.
Trigger warning: this episode does touch on the subject of eating disorders.

What’s the key to confidence? Are we born with it or are there tools we can use to boost our confidence? What’s the link between confidence and self-esteem, and our mental health generally? How does how we feel about our body affect our self-esteem and mental health – and how can we nurture ourselves on days when things don’t feel so great?
We discuss all this with model, content creator and mental health advocate Jada Sezer in this episode of Body Cons.

To celebrate the end of Mental Health Awareness Week, on Saturday 18th May we hosted a very special day of workshops, talks, a live podcast and a nude photoshoot experience for mums in our very first Body Cons “Body Love” event.
It was an empowering, inspiring and uplifting day, with tears, laughter and some beautiful images captured by the incredible photographer Eve Hazelton.
We wanted to celebrate the female form and the bodies of mums, through the female gaze, in private one-to-one photo sessions for ten mothers. But we wanted to turn the experience into a real event, so each ticket holder was invited to bring one guest with them.
All profits from the day are being donated to The Mental Health Foundation to support their important work and as a thank you for making the focus of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week be about body image.
The whole day was captured by our amazing videographer Amy Upchurch – @Amyupchurchfilms – as soon as the video’s ready we’ll share it here and on all our social channels! Like all the people who worked with us on the day, Amy donated her time and expertise for free and we couldn’t be more grateful.
The event was held in the beautiful The Forge in Bristol, donated to us for free for the day. It was a stunning venue and the perfect location for our first ever event. Huge thank you to The Forge Bristol for letting us use the space. –

OUR SPONSOR FOR THIS EPISODE: This episode has been made possible thanks to Natracare. Did you know that more women in the UK experience urinary incontinence than hayfever? But the massive stigma around it means nobody really talks about it! So we’re talking about it now… Natracare’s Dry & Light incontinence range is made from natural, chlorine-free and biodegradable ingredients. And will protect your knickers from those leaks when you laugh, cough or sneeze.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can cure light urinary incontinence in most cases, so go and get checked out by a physiotherapist if this rings a bell for you!

With the regular “Going up / Going down” feature, Molly and Lottie share their favourite and worst things on the subject of body image from the past week, online, on the telly or in the papers.
And then the pair meet plus size fashion influencer Emily Fisher, aka @EmilyGossip to talk about what it’s like on other side of the Insta veil, the effect of social media on her own body image and tips for teenagers and parents who might be worried about this stuff.

Is there such a thing as the “perfect” baby bump? What happens if we’re told our bump is “too big” or “too small”? And what’s the secret to feeling good in our skin in that vulnerable newborn phase, when we’re often bombarded with messages about “snapping back”? All this and more is covered in the third episode of Body Cons, dedicated to all things pregnancy.
Molly and Lottie share their favourite and less favourite (mostly favourite this week, actually) things on the subject of body image on the telly and in magazines this week. Then join the pair on a trip to Exeter to meet this week’s guest Siobhan Miller from The Positive Birth Company

What’s the secret to feeling good about your body? Why is body image such an important subject anyway? And what’s the most joyous body positive pop song around at the moment?! We cover all of this and more in this, the very first episode of Body Cons.
Meet us, your hosts Molly Forbes and Lottie Storey, and find out more about our respective stories and what drove us to create the podcast in the first place. Then hear what we’re loving and hating on the subject in our weekly Going Up / Going Down feature, talking about things we’ve seen on the news, the telly and in magazines that all relate to the topic of body image.
In the second half of the episode you can hear from this week’s guest, body image researcher Nadia Craddock, who we met up with at The Centre for Appearance Studies at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Nadia told us about some of the fascinating research into the subject and why it intersects with other big issues like social justice and public health.

Welcome to Body Cons! This is a brand new podcast, offering a curious look at one of modern life’s most pressing subjects: body image.
It’s been months in the making and we’re proud to finally unveil it to you – we hope you’ll listen to this trailer and subscribe, so you won’t miss the very first episode launching on iTunes and all good podcast providers on Monday 11th March.
A collection of conversations about bodies, from post-baby bodies to the latest pop video, from dismantling diet culture to disability, Body Cons looks at anything and everything to do with body image.
We developed the Body Cons podcast out of a shared interest in body image, diet culture, feminism and parenting. Deciding it was time for us to stop having these chats between ourselves and open up the subject for wider debate, we tracked down the expert voices that bring real credence to every episode, opening up the conversation to listeners all over the world.
We’ve travelled the country to have these conversations, weaving them into an introductory chat about body image in the news and popular culture every week. With a new episode launched weekly, season one will run through March and May, featuring a diverse selection of fantastic guests.
Podcast presented by journalists and presenters, Molly Forbes & Lottie Storey.
