Ten years ago, Paul Hutchinson was living a life that most people only dream of. As a successful multi-billion dollar fund manager, he had everything that money could buy. But everything changed when he was introduced to the horrific world of child trafficking.

Human trafficking is the second-largest criminal enterprise globally, and it is estimated that over 40 million people are trapped in modern-day slavery. It is a crime that knows no boundaries and affects people from all walks of life. But for Hutchinson, it became personal when he was recruited for his first undercover rescue mission in Colombia, one of Latin America's largest economies.

During that mission, Hutchinson played a part in rescuing over 120 children from the clutches of traffickers. The experience was life-changing for him, and it made him realize that he had to do something to help these innocent victims. Seeing a scared 11-year-old girl with tear-stained cheeks standing in front of him was a turning point for him. He knew that he had to dedicate his life to the eradication of human trafficking and rescuing as many children as he could.

Since that first mission, Hutchinson has taken part in over 70 undercover operations, working with government agencies posing as a wealthy paedophile in order to infiltrate gangs. His efforts have helped rescue countless children from the clutches of traffickers, and his work has been an inspiration to many.

Hutchinson's dedication to the cause is even more remarkable when you consider that he had no prior experience in this field. Before his involvement in child trafficking, he co-founded Bridge Investment Group, a large real estate investment firm based in Salt Lake City. But after exiting this business, he went on to help fund efforts to identify, rescue, rehabilitate, and organize adoptions of children who have been trafficked.

For Hutchinson, protecting the truly innocent is something that every person from every political view, every religion, and every race can get behind. "Every human on the planet can come together to save children from something this horrible," he says. His work is a testament to the fact that we can make a difference, no matter how small our efforts may seem.

Hutchinson's story is a reminder that we can all do our part to make the world a better place. It is never too late to get involved and make a difference. With dedication and perseverance, we can all be heroes in our own right. As Hutchinson puts it, "We have the power to make a difference, and we have a moral obligation to do so".

Welcome to this week's episode of Leadership Bites, where we discuss the latest developments in the world of technology. In this episode, we will be exploring the big tech layoffs of 2023, which have already seen over 100,000 workers being laid off in just the first six weeks of the year.

According to data compiled by Layoffs.fyi, an online tracker that keeps tabs on job losses in the technology sector, the number of layoffs in 2023 already accounts for 64% of the total tech company layoffs for all of 2022. This is a significant trend that highlights the current state of the tech industry.

Some of the largest tech companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Twitter, Microsoft, and Salesforce, have all laid off a significant number of employees. Alphabet, for example, has laid off 12,000 workers, while Amazon has laid off 18,000 employees. Meta has also been forced to let go of 11,000 workers, while Twitter has cut 4,000 jobs. Microsoft and Salesforce have both laid off 10,000 and 8,000 employees, respectively.

These job losses have come as a result of the end of the pandemic hiring spree, which saw many companies rapidly expanding their workforces to meet increased demand for technology services. Now that the pandemic has subsided, many of these same companies are having to restructure their operations to remain competitive, leading to significant layoffs across the industry.

Join us in this episode as we delve deeper into the reasons behind these layoffs, the impact they are having on the industry, and what the future of tech employment looks like in the wake of these developments.

Founded by Ollie Ollerton, former UK Special Forces in 2015, BreakPoint offers courses to organisations and individuals. They're designed to change the way you think, enabling positive change, unearthing potential and invigorating mental wellbeing.

Ollie Ollerton has lived an incredible life.

Survivor of a freak accident aged 10, tours of Northern Ireland and Iraq under his belt before the age of 21 as a Royal Marine, and a Special Forces soldier with the SBS by the age of 23.

When Ollie left the military, his life spiralled out of control. Struggling to define his purpose, he headed back to the only environment he felt comfortable in: a war zone. In the wild west of Iraq during the fall of Saddam Hussein, his inner noise fell silent amid the outer noise of conflict. But life as a mercenary took its toll. Alcohol offered a ready form of escapism.

Ollie tried to get himself back on track with a ‘normal’ life in Australia, but it just wasn’t possible. Before long, the call of danger beckoned and he was out in Thailand working with an elite team to rescue children from child slavery and sex trafficking. This experience was a pivotal moment in Ollie’s life. It helped him define his future purpose – helping others – which would become the very heartbeat of BreakPoint.

We talk about:

  • Being attacked by a chimp
  • The special forces
  • Break Point
  • The path to targetted thinking
  • Instagram being fake perfection
  • Thank god for failure
  • You have to stretch to grow
  • Being honest about where you are

The rather amazing David Pendleton and myself have a conversation about the NHS, this is something that is dear to David's heart and he really has a deep understanding of the topic. This is David's article on Linked In, on the topic: Click here.

It is no secret that the National Health Service, or NHS, is facing numerous challenges in recent times.

One major issue is the shortage of funding and resources. The NHS has been struggling to keep up with increasing demand for services, rising costs of medical supplies and treatments, and an aging population. This has led to overcrowded hospitals, longer waiting times for appointments and procedures, and a decrease in the quality of care.

Another challenge is the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses. The high levels of stress, long hours, and low pay have led to burnout and a decrease in morale among healthcare workers. This, in turn, is leading to high levels of staff turnover, which further exacerbates the problem.

Furthermore, the NHS is also facing a significant backlog of patients waiting for treatments, surgeries, and appointments. This is due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put an immense strain on the healthcare system. The pandemic has also highlighted the need for a more integrated and coordinated approach to healthcare, both within the NHS and with other health and social care providers.

In addition, the NHS is facing major issues with regards to technology and data management. The lack of a comprehensive, integrated IT system is leading to duplication of efforts, increased costs, and a decreased ability to deliver effective, efficient care.

In conclusion, the NHS is facing a multitude of challenges, including funding and resource constraints, shortage of healthcare professionals, backlogs in patient care, and inadequate technology and data management. Addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including government, healthcare providers, and the public.

In the conversations that David and I have we discuss many things and as such decided to capture them.

They won't all have conclusions, however, we hope they add value.

Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt, long-time collaborators, draw on their years of innovative practice and research to describe with vivid, real-world experiences, how leading with care enriches people and transforms organizations in our challenging times.

DeKoch, with over 40 years of diverse executive leadership experience, which included 20 years leading The Boldt Company, a $1 billion construction services and real estate development company, has developed novel insights into leadership thinking and practice.

Clampitt, an endowed, award-winning communication and information science professor at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, has over 40 years of experience in university teaching, ground-breaking research, and business consulting. His lifelong passion is to explore the dynamic relationship between leadership, communication, and big ideas.

The authors sought to go beyond the laudable sentiments of the “servant leadership” movement by envisioning, creating, and testing a new leadership platform based on a set of guiding beliefs and actual day-to-day practices.

The authors’ unique perspective transforms traditional practices, like employee coaching and collaboration, into dynamic self-actualizing workplaces. How? By sharing how caring leaders adroitly blend visible and subtle practices to realize the aspirational benefits of coaching and collaboration. The authors use a similar approach to share insights about less frequently discussed leadership issues such as how to build an empowering network of relationships and transform pushback into progress. Anyone who wishes to craft their own distinctive, compelling, and empowering leadership style that unleashes the latent energy of people and their organizations will discover a robust and enriching framework for doing so in Leading with Care in a Tough World. We talk about:

  • Beyond servant leadership
  • Care beyond service
  • WIIFM and WIIFO
  • Faux collaboration
  • Cynical interplays
  • The NO.1 predictor of success
  • Not overestimating the impact of ones communication
  • Visible and sublte practises

Simon Townsley is an acclaimed international photojournalist and twice recipient of the British Press Photographer of the Year Award. Simon is known for his ability to connect with people and convey their story with dignity, even in extreme contexts.

“Trust is an essential value in being able capture a powerful image, but trust isn’t just between subject and photographer. It criss-crosses all threads, from NGO, publisher and authorities to photographer and subject. It is a privilege to be able to bear witness, and it is one I seek to honour. By creating compelling images of distressing situations I can break down the barriers that stop people engaging, to open their eyes without fear and broaden their perspective. – Simon Townsley

Arriving in London in 1987 from New Zealand, he was appointed Senior Photographer at the Sunday Times where he remained for 14 years. He covered conflicts around the world, including the Balkans, West Africa, the Middle East and Asia. He was assigned to photograph in depth numerous major news events such as Tiananmen Square, the Gulf war, fall of the Berlin Wall, siege of Sarajevo and the election of Nelson Mandela.

In 2002 he felt a need to explore photography in a deeper sense, to understand photography in its purest aesthetic, Using the power of the image to convey a message through its beauty alone. He embarked on a personal project- OILMAN.

Industrial landscapes from over 20 countries explore mankind’s relationship with the natural world in the desperate and dramatic pursuit of oil across the planet. Using his love of the simple aesthetic, the images were shot in large-format and displayed as grand-scale prints, exploring the sense of scale that the oil and gas industry operate on and the issues it creates.

For the last four years Simon has been working with the Telegraph Media Group Global Health Security Team. With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Health Security project seeks to bring awareness of vitally important issues to wider audience and focuses on key pillars of health and security around the world.

Dawn Airey joined Central Independent Television in 1985 as a management trainee under the wing of then director of programmes, Andy Allen. Promotion followed. In 1989 she became Director of Programme Planning at Central and was appointed to the Central broadcasting board. When the ITV Network Centre was established in 1993, she moved to London to become the first Controller of Children's and Daytime Programmes.

In 1994, she became Controller of Arts and Entertainment at Channel 4, chaired by Michael Grade. It was reported in The Sunday Times that her forthright manner had earned her the soubriquet "Scary Airey" and "Zulu Dawn".

Airey joined Channel 5 in 1996, the year before its launch, as its first director of programmes. It was during her tenure that she agreed with an interviewer that some might think the channel's core strengths were "films, football and fucking" but added it was about a lot more. She was subsequently appointed as chief executive of the channel in 2000.

In 2002, it was reported ITV plc was hoping to recruit Airey as its chief executive. However she surprised the television industry by instead accepting a position at the satellite broadcaster, BSkyB. There she was responsible for running all Sky channels, except Sky Sports, and she was in charge of programming and advertising sales. In 2006, she became managing director of Channels and Services whereupon she gained additional responsibility for all third party channels, joint ventures and networked media.

Airey left BSkyB to head up an independent production business backed by private investors however she was only with the company for a total of eight days before it was announced that the venture did not have sufficient cash to continue trading. Soon after, in May 2007, she was reunited with Michael Grade, joining ITV plc as Director of Global Content, running the broadcaster's production and global sales division. But the reunion did not last long.

In May 2008, after eight months at ITV plc, Airey earned Grade's enmity when she resigned to rejoin Channel 5 as chairman and CEO, with a remit to increase profitability and audience share. This she did. RTL's decision in 2010 to exit UK broadcasting and sell the company to Richard Desmond's Northern & Shell saw her elevated to the role of President of RTL-owned CLT-UFA. On 11 August 2010, it was announced Airey would leave Channel 5 to take up a senior post with RTL, its former owners, later in 2010. She left RTL in April 2013.

In August 2013, she joined Yahoo! as senior vice-president of Yahoo EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa). She was in the post until September 2015.

Airey was chief executive officer (CEO) of Getty Images photo agency from October 2015 to 31 December 2018, at which time she became a non-executive director member of its board.

In 2019, The Football Association appointed Airey as chair of the new joint Barclays FA Women's Super League and Championship board.

The 12-strong board, including six women, was established by the FA as part of its commitment to growing the women's game.

It was during Airey's tenure that the FA agreed a landmark three-year broadcast deal with the BBC and Sky that delivered more access to live women's football than ever before.

In 2021, she also served as a member of the Government's Expert Panel for a Fan-Led Review of Football Governance, led by the former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch. The review called for the creation of an independent regulator for the ga

He shows people how to achieve the results they want regardless of the circumstances.

Stirling went from multi-billion dollar startup to collapse and coming back to launch, invest and grow over 50 companies, he has taken that experience to work with C-level teams and speak on stages around the world.

I was really impressed by Stirling, he is articulate, self effacing and clearly as shark as a tack.

He is at episode 87 and counting the only person I have interviewed who when we were done said, "How can I be of service to you?" And what's more he meant it!

A global CEO & executive, chairman of the board and PE expert, with a track record for fast and solid financial results in transformations of B2B companies with industrial manufacturing.

His passion for this type of work started while working at McKinsey in the late 1980s. Pepyn has worked in a range of business-to-business industries, typically within the manufacturing sector.

His motto is “practise what you preach”.

We discuss his book Business Leadership Under Fire

Disaster, disruption and change are recurring challenges in business.

We are used to reading about the successful disruptors of established industries (Tesla, Amazon, Netflix, Uber, etc.), but what about the companies they disrupted?

  • What ever happened to them?
  • How did they cope?
  • And more importantly, what are the secrets of making a business thrive again?

"Business Leadership Under Fire: Nine Steps to Rescue and Transform Organizations" is the book every business leader needs. It will inspire readers with its thoughtful, practical and battle-hardened recipes for success.

Pepyn Dinandt usually gets parachuted into an organization only after it realizes it is in real trouble. It is his job to assess and understand the situation that faces the business while also devising effective ways forward towards recovery and success.

In "Business Leadership Under Fire" Dinandt draws on his own extensive business experience and, with the help of decorated army officer Colonel Richard Westley, marries this proven expertise with the leadership insights of military thinkers to develop an imaginative and practical nine-step plan for any leader who wishes not simply to survive but to inspire and thrive "under fire".

Using lessons forged on the front lines of both the military and commercial worlds, Dinandt and Westley’s concise book is required reading for anyone in any organization that needs help in turbulent times.

On May 30, 2020, during the George Floyd protests in Flint, Swanson received national attention when he removed his riot gear and marched with the protesters.

However, Chris is much much more than a moment in time, he is embodiment of a life that is dedicated to service.

Chris is a three-time author, including a recent children's book that highlights memories from his own childhood. In addition, Swanson has authored Tinman to Ironman and Blood, Guts, and Things That Drive You Nuts.

He has served in a variety of positions, including corrections, patrol, narcotics, criminal investigation, death investigation, and command operations. Some of his most notable assignments have been part of the executive protection for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and Vice Presidents Gore, Chaney and Biden.

Chris commands the police honor guard, which has performed over 100 ceremonies across the state. He augments his police experience as a licensed paramedic and certified Medical Examiner Investigator. This training has led him to witness to some of the most heinous crimes and acts of violence one can imagine, including homicides, suicides, felonies, fatalities and drug overdoses. He shares these experiences to audiences across the country to make a positive impact their lives using lessons from the living and the dead.

What marching with the protesters did. "It created a battle cry for the Flint residents and the protesters that we can show other communities that we can protest without violence," Swanson said. To law enforcement officers around the country, it's showed "it's OK to be vulnerable and it's OK to talk and it's OK to have these conversations. .... I'm hoping people lay down their swords ... and the police are the ones that start the conversations ... and they say, 'We're done fighting, what do we need to do?' Our nation needs healing more than ever before."

In this episode The Professor & The Coach  look at Afghanistan. It's one heck of a topic right now and can be hard to watch. How have things gone so badly wrong?

This is not about whether the decision to be there or to leave is the right one, that's someone elses podcast.

This is about the human issues and how it could be so wrong for those in such vulnerable positions.

Is it a lack of:

  • Values?
  • Competence?
  • Bravery?

Or an oft repeated situation of good people not being a team and so bad decisions get left too long with blame being at the front of the queue.

Dan Norenberg develops leaders and within that process executive teams. I connected with Dan and straight away saw a like minded thinker and straight shooter.

On this episode we discuss Dan's thinking and how he works with senior leaders.

We discuss among other things:

  • The Oxygen Mask Rule
  • Why all leaders arent great leaders, as they should be ny now

Dan's book, Executive Ownershift, is a great starting place to get insight into this thinking:

"When leadership teams do not perform at their best, everyone suffers. Low employee engagement levels, failure to meet strategic targets and inconsistent company growth are signs that leadership teams are not highly effective.

Executive Ownershift is a transformative growth program that enables leadership teams to deliver peak performance: When leadership teams perform at their best, so can everyone else.

This book introduces a top-down team approach that enables leadership teams to dramatically improve their performance. It highlights how leadership teams can transform their own businesses and how they can master what must go right and what can go wrong on their path to high performance. With examples and cases provide evidence that results come fast to leadership teams that recognize that they are the starting point for improvement and growth, the book is an excellent guide that allows struggling leadership teams to become good, and good leadership teams to become great."

How do you stay connected to the people in your organisation when the reality is you have climbed so high up the hierarchy that you in truth don't have a finger on the pulse?

Join myself and David Pendleton DPhil Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School.

They say the queen thinks the world smells of paint as there is someone 3 metres in front of her making sure she thinks the world is perfect. Of course it's a metaphor, however its one that rings true for many of us.

Consider how perhaps you present the reality of situations up the food chain. As that perspective is passed higher and higher, then how sterilised does that truth become?

Perhaps the data is correct, but the power of the message is lost.

David and I saw a report on how "General Lord Dannatt was left horrified by a shocking video of an RAF initiation ceremony" and it made us think of how when we heard about the Volkeswagon emissions scandal, the then CEO Martin Winterkorn proclaimed innocence to the issue.

So you can know or not know. Either way you are either lying, being willfully blind or negligent, none of this lands well.

What does it take to stay connected......and honest?

Successful brands know that investing in more useful, helpful and mutual relationships with their customers is the key to long-term success. Which is where they come in. They help organisations build authentic, consistent and compelling brands, based on a deep understanding and respect for the people you want to connect with. What is it that one has to think about as a leader/manager when it comes to morality?

Is it fair to say, "All is fair in love and war?" or is that too convenient and lacking in social responsibility?

Perhaps it is too naive when the aim of the game is to come out on top!

All these questions, pondered, thought about and discussed in this episode of The Professor & The Coach.

Join, Professor David Pendleton and Master Coach Guy Bloom on their inaugral episode of the Professor and Coach.

What happens when two people meet on a podcast, hit it off and start having conversations that they realise they could record and share? The answer is: The Professor & The Coach.

Is there really such a thing as fair? Is it a meritocracy?  How can there be a justifcation for the huge gap between people on the front line and those in senior roles?

Soemtimes it seems clear as to why someone has such a huge salary.

Other times when you see their performance or what they do just isn't clear then it seems out of sink.

On this episode of Leadership Bites I have the talented and enigmatic Nic Askew. For more direct information on Nic go here.

Nic is a Former (Geographical) Explorer and (Business) Managing Director. Now an Educator, Film Maker and Explorer of the Inner World. He is the creator of Soul Biographies (®), which includes the search for ‘The Soul of America‘. And the profound INNER VIEW Method. His work is in the arena of truth, liberation and genius. Not their explanation, but their experience. And in how the experience lives in the world.

SOMEWHERE IN THOSE DEPTHS ~ the causes of much of what happens in our lives lie far deeper than we imagine. Yet we seldom look far enough beneath the surface. The films, words, images, observations and unprotected conversations of Nic Askew consider the many elements of our lives, work and society at an unusual depth. And in doing so, opens our eyes wide to what we can become (in reality what we are but haven’t yet recognized).

THE CONGO, BOARDROOM & THE CAMERA ~ From expeditions in the Congo, Amazon and Sahara to a Managing Directorship in Business, Nic’s eclectic earlier life took an unexpected and consciously awakening turn in 2005. He now makes Human Portraits in Black & White Film. Extremely close up. And extremely revealing of our common human experience. But the long and short of it is that he is able to take his subjects to a place beyond the mind, deep into the inner world. A place of truth, revelation, liberation and intuitive genius. All work of recent years is that.

THE INNER VIEW METHOD ~ He now travels the world helping foundations find and articulate their courageous pathfinding notions, (conscious) organizations find and reveal their soul, and most importantly, human beings express the emotion of their pain, their joy, and much in between. He also teaches his profound INNER VIEW Method as a way to access authenticity, truth and intuitive intelligence in service to transformational work.

On this episode I have the brilliant Louise Houston, Head of Inclusion & diversity for Tarmac.

In 2019, Tarmac launched its ‘Proud to be me’ campaign to celebrate diversity across its operations and to build a more inclusive company.

Now embedded company wide, employees are invited to share with their colleagues a ‘Proud to be me’ presentation slide via team meetings, at events and operational settings. The exercise is designed to allow colleagues to honestly highlight things they are proud of: hobbies, identity, background, family or career achievements.

‘Proud to be me’ is just one of the ways in which Tarmac employees are encouraged to bring their whole, authentic selves to work. The approach is underpinned by Tarmac’s inclusion and diversity vision: to foster a fair and supportive culture that promotes opportunities for all – where everyone feels proud to be themselves.

Louise talks about:

· It starts at the top – it’s so important to have the buy in of your board. Your senior leaders will provide allyship and act as champions, role models and sponsors for change within your organisation. But to do this they need to understand the benefits, including commercial risks and opportunities, so go prepared with data.

· Take responsibility for broadening your knowledge/understanding – what was right today, may not be right tomorrow. As individuals, we need to make sure we educate ourselves on issues facing our people, especially our minority communities, to help remove barriers and support them effectively.

· Be ready to invest – establish an I&D function, strengthen policies, develop welfare facilities, and invest time and resource into your people and HR function so that you’re set up to drive meaningful action.

· Invest in yourself – you can attend all the training courses but only by going on your own journey of discovery and opening up your mind (which may at times be uncomfortable and honest) will you start to move forward.

· Know where you are, where you want to be and measure your progress – once you start exploring the I&D agenda, you open a pandora’s box. Employee research will help you really understand your company’s focus areas and priorities.

· Be genuine – closing the ‘say-do’ gap, this is where true allyship comes in and where business leader sponsors can add real value. Furthering the I&D agenda mustn’t be seen as simply a tick-box exercise. For true cultural shift, all employees need to be engaged and able to contribute. That’s when change happens.

· Progress over perfection – sometimes starting is the hardest part and you can spend a lot of time worrying about saying the wrong thing. What I’ve learnt is as long as you have the right intent and approach things with a learning mindset, you’ll be set to start your journey.

· Find your ‘why’ – what’s the purpose of further developing an inclusive culture in your business? This could be a personal, social, safety or economic reason.

· Finally, it’s not a competition – listen, share best practice (both within and outside of your industry) and shamelessly steal great ideas! Making all workplaces fully inclusive is the overall ambition.

Tarmac has 150 years of experience, employing around 7,000 people over 400 sites. Solutions span aggregates, asphalt, cement, lime, offsite manufacturing, readymix concrete etc...

Just over a decade ago Experian UK, ran a programme called Inspire. This episode is a catalyst from Sam Gilbert who posted a picture on LinkedIn of the cohort he was in on the programme.

I am joined by Sam, Jemma Price and Keith Ambrose to discuss the impact of the programme then and now!

Sam said in his post:

"More than a decade ago, I took part in a leadership programme called Inspire.

All these years later, barely a week goes by without me drawing on the vast store of things I learnt from the experience and the people I shared it with. Reflecting on a meeting, I'll realize it went well because it transcended "ritual cliché", and achieved "true rapport". Facing a decision, I'll ask myself something Guy Bloom said when delivering: "What would a good version of you do? Not a superhuman, Mahatma Gandhi version, but a good version?"

It made me a braver and more compassionate person, and a better leader because of it.

Company priorities change over time, and I imagine Experian has been through several iterations of its people strategy since then. Inspire was a material investment that may not have driven short-term financial results.

But I am 100% sure it was the right thing to do. As Fred Pelard writes, businesses should think of training as a "no regret" move - one that yields a positive outcome in every scenario. That I'm writing today with warmth and gratitude about a company I left 8 years ago speaks to the truth of that".

Creating and running this programme was a labour of love, it was team effort to make it land and have the impact that is did.

It went on to win the:

  • WINNER-GOLD AWARD-Training Journals, Best Leadership Programme
  • Highly Recommended - HR Excellence Awards - Employee Engagement
  • WINNER-ABP-2015-Excellence In Performance Improvement

Why do leaders have to keep learning? Because according to Reg Revan, "Learning must be equal to or greater than the change that is going on around you". That seems to make sense, you are never done learning, not as an individual, a team or an organisation:

  • Why leaders have to learn
  • Tame and Wicked learning cultures
  • The 'interview questions' on learning
  • Thinking beyond the event horizon
  • Understanding wisdom as a leader

The story is not what you think. REEBOK wasnt born in the US. It was in fact born from a Bolton familly in a terrace house.

This is a story of working hard, spotting the opportunity, never stopping, stepping up to the plate and frankly making your own luck.

Joe was born on 18 May 1935 and shared a birthday with his grandfather Joseph William, who had set up sports shoe manufacturer J.W. Foster & Sons, in Bolton, in 1900.

Joseph William died around 18 months prior to Joe's birth but was a pioneer in his day, especially in the use of spikes on the bottom of running shoes. His shoes were worn by the likes of Harold Abraham and Eric Liddell, eventually being immortalised in Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire.

"He learned the best way to sell his shoes was to have influencers," Joe said.

"He was giving shoes to leading athletes and in the 1920s he was supplying all of the Olympic teams, it was amazing. He was supplying the bulk of football leagues as well."

"Back then, the shoes weren't for the street, they were pure performance."

Talking about how he named REEBOK:

"I just opened the dictionary on R because I thought it was a good, strong letter. I came across Reebok and thought 'fantastic', it was a small South African Gazelle and with us being a running company, it fit nicely."

Joe talks about how "then we heard about this thing called Aerobics..."

Hollywood stars such as Sigourney Weaver and Cybill Shepherd went on to wear Reebok shoes in Aliens and at the Emmy Awards respectively.

This is a great story and a great episode.

Wendy Addison's act of reporting corruption at LeisureNet Ltd in South Africa in 2000 began one of the biggest corporate disasters in South African history. Standing up for her principles and values, Wendy showed courage and a willingness to endure danger and the potential of losing both her livelihood and life, by taking a moral stand against bribery and corruption.

She was ousted as a whistleblower. On one side were the wrongdoers, still with the credibility and authority of their positions and a wealth of resources behind them. On the other side Wendy was discredited in the public's eyes, unemployed, unemployable (because of the notoriety of the case), running out of money, receiving death threats and having lost the support of friends and family.

Wendy's story is one of courage and endurance, of hope and justice. It covers ambition, corporate greed and skulduggery, telling the truth and alienation from a society that misguidedly applauds coveted wealth. It's about how life can dramatically shift from success to begging on the streets of London without warning.

The players in her story are many and varied: from the corporate world to the judiciary, governments and the UN.

Wendy's battle has been for what's 'right' and along the way she has exposed much of what is 'wrong' in the world. It's about Truth or Dare or rather 'Daring to tell the truth.

Wendy is a critical thinker and a powerful speaker with fresh insights that both entertain and inspire.

She has spoken to thousands of people across three continents with past engagements including Tedx Tokyo, the United Success Women's Entrepreneurial Symposium in Amsterdam, the CFA Institute's Annual Travelling Conference in Africa and Mauritius as well as numerous corporate speaking engagements and university lectures.

Kevin Green has a new book called Performance Leadershp 2.0. Kevin is an integral part of the Living Brave delivery team and soneone I have had the pleasure of knowing for some 20 + years.

In Performance Leadership 2.0, Kevin Green presents ideas and practical solutions for achieving exactly that.

The ideas and approaches in this book have been assembled from over 15,000 interactions and conversations with the people that Kevin has engaged with during a lengthy career as a performance consultant.

The methods offered are presented in an easy to understand structure and then brought to life using many stories of practical application from time served in many operational environments.

This book is split into two key parts.

Firstly, it examines the need to be a worthy role model so that others will want to belong to your team and feel invested in something, and somebody worth following.

The second part switches the lens and focuses on what the Manager can do to boost performance from the team.

Even if you are a seasoned Manager of teams, you are bound to find something new in this fresh, and very practical, approach to improving performance at work.

I was asked to do a video for a leadership project for young people involved in 'Make a Wish' - Ireland by John Doran. It got a very positive response:

"Your talk is absolutely super . Talk about hitting the nail on the head!

I played it to my students today and they really engaged with it. In particular the question you pose about how do people experience you.

We can’t thank you enough , it will really make a difference."

So I thought I'd share it.

The question that I was asked to address was basically:

"What would you offer youngsters that are starting out in life?"

So of course they don't have to be 18 years old, any age would work.

Anyway, I thought I'd share.....Hope it adds value.

Duke Stump blew me away in this episode. I am rarely affected by a persons manner, insight and personal characterists. Duke has 'something', that I put down to honesty. He is honest with himself and then with you. Duke's hoensty though comes from a place of consciousness, he is purposeful, there is intent in his life and his conversations. He appears to me to be an explorer that wants you to join him on the quest.

His new project Bonfire With Soul is a revelation. YOU HAVE TO CHECK IT OUT.

Cited by Forbes as one of the top 50 Game-Changing CMO's, I have spent the last 30+ years as an inspired protagonist helping to build iconic global brands (NIKE, Seventh Generation, Lululemon). Duke loves building bonfires with soul: powerful, emotionally charged brands that stand for something meaningful in the world.

In addition, he has served in BOD and mentor roles with The Biomimicry Institute, 21c Hotels, Unreasonable Group, Healthy Child Healthy World and Love Your Brain.

A lover of nature, slow food, horsemanship and yoga, Duke and his family live on a small ranch in idyllic Ojai, CA along with horses, dogs, cats and chickens. Intoxicated with culture, empathetic leadership and strategy. Unique bonfire brand philosophy and strategy that goes against the grain of conventional thinking.

His inspirations come from a diverse range of sources including but not limited to nature, horsemanship, Buckminster Fuller, Jiddu Krishnamurti, introverts, yoga and music.

We have Mandy Hickson. Mandy was the second woman to fly the Tornado GR4 operationally, completed three tours of duty and flew 45 missions over Iraq.

Mandy learned not to shy away from failure. After two unsuccessful attempts at the RAF flying aptitude tests, reaching the limit of times that they can be taken, her goals appeared to be unattainable. Undeterred, Mandy went on to join the RAF as an Air Traffic Controller and continued to make her case for becoming a pilot throughout her officer training. Finally, the RAF decided to offer her pilot training as a test case, having observed her skills in the real world.

The only female aircrew, Mandy trained on the Firefly, Tucano and Hawk aircraft, and was awarded many prizes for leadership. She was the second woman to fly the Tornado GR4 operationally, and completed three tours of duty and flew 45 missions over Iraq.

This is a great insight into her journey, the hurdles that would have stopped most people in their tracks and an insight into what it is to operate in this world.

So I reached out! This is the episode.

"Correct Choice are on a mission to change the double glazing industry for the better. No waffle, No pressure, just the highest quality products at affordable prices for everyone".

This is a big one. Can organisations really be socially responsible? Does the reality of making money and keeping your job allow people to be genuinely human and if so can they make it in this 'show me the money' environment.

It is the BIG question and one that is ever increasing as the millennial starts to push back against the contradictions that exist in the values and the actions of many organisations.

I offer the idea of 'cumulative way of behaving' being the reference point what a culture is and what is will tolerate.

What's the line between managing for performance and people feeling monitored? It looks obvious on paper but is less so in the reality of those that are having the experience. This podcast was triggered by the news from the BBC that Barclays bank in the UK "says it has scrapped a system that tracked the time employees spent at their desks and sent warnings to those spending too long on breaks". The intent was good we are sure but in implementation, something got lost in the narrative. Here we explore this issue.

Social media is an issue for many leaders, they fear it and they aren't sure how to interact with it. We saw the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently very uncomfortable in front of the cameras and he tried to force a photo opportunity by grabbing a woman's hand. Almost not aware that of course someone was filing him on a phone and he could control the narrative as he wanted. He couldn't, it was painful to watch and it's moments like this that scare a lot of leaders, as they can't control it as they would like to.
