Brooke @sugaresque is a recent A-level graduate and has built a big presence on social media, especially Tik Tok where she has close to 200k followers. Beyond the metrics, what really stood out to me is how adored and celebrated she is by her followers, her maturity beyond her years, her love for learning and self-growth, and how she uses her influence to support others unapologetically. She is an amazing role model for youth, and it was a privilege to chat with her on her motivations, struggles, resilience and of course social media!
Maressa is a recent graduate from SP, who’s passionate about uplifting mental health and telling stories that matter. She calls herself a “reluctant entrepreneur”, citing that it was accidental that she pitched an idea and carried it on. Ron Yap once faced serious social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), where he sat at void decks after school ruminating for 3 hours, and also headed to the toilet up to 30 times in a night. Yet, with certain factors, he turned his pain into purpose – wrote a book on overcoming anxiety, and started a page @mentalhealthceo, which now has over 14k followers. All this while still being a communications student. We discuss his journey, raw emotions and how to overcome anxiety and OCD.

All this while being an Army regular – a profession he enjoyed because his love for the jungle and learning from others. He is leaving the force soon, will continue to trade, and has dreams to set up a orphanage in future, in his words “To give kids dignity and love; the same priceless intangibles his parents gave me. They are free to make their own choices after, but everyone deserves a proper start like I did”
We discuss his journey, life lessons, and eventually on financial resilience – how to make, save and grow your money, with emphasis on principles, emotional control (and not losing your soul)
On this episode of #MindsetHacks, I invite Andrew Rapahel to discuss what rumination is, why we ruminate and practical tips to help you stop ruminating. Ruminating is repeatedly thinking about a past event, often with a negative emotional outcome.

Xav once sat alone and hungry in a holding cell, after being arrested for attempted suicide. (Attempting suicide has since been decriminalized in Singapore). Yet, this story offers insight into how we must treat mental health seriously and with empathy. Xav is now a social worker and passionate mental health advocate, having over 5 years of experience volunteering: organizing initiatives, giving talks to raise awareness, and serving people with mental health conditions. She hopes that by sharing her story intimately, it will give others permission to seek help and help eradicate stigma too. I am deeply appreciative of her courage and heart in doing so. Do reach out to her to thank her if this episode benefits you.

In November 2020, a news story went viral - many Singaporeans were moved by a young boy’s courage, resilience and love in the face of suffering. The boy’s name is Raphael Lee. Despite battling cancer, he soldiered on and took his PSLE. Before he could receive his results, he passed on after complications from a surgery. His parents, William and Winnie Lee, took his results on his behalf, and gave interviews on Raphael’s journey. On this episode, I speak with William in an intimate setting, on Raphael’s life and lessons learnt, and finding strength to care for Raphael while he was growing up, and now, to move on strongly. I was nervous before the podcast, given it’s sensitive nature. Yet, William was so open hearted and assuring, letting me know he is ok with the questions. He wishes to celebrate Raphael’s life, allow others to learn from him, and move on strongly. Needless to say, I got deep insights from listening, and was moved to tears by some stories William shared. I hope this episode represents him and Raphael’s message well.

Shuraim Basir is one of the co-founders of Randomly Relatable, Singapore’s #1 youth podcast. We discuss his experiences growing up raised by a single parent, and the impact it had on him emotionally. We also talk about the process of starting and growing Randomly Relatable; staying resilient despite criticism and pressure, the mindset behind the hustle, and the vision and mission of the platform – to provide youth with a safe space to voice their opinions without judgement. What struck me most was a line Shuraim said: “The message we want to put out is: We don’t always have to agree, but at the very least, we listen and respect each other”.
Zahier lost his sight at 19 due to a retinal detachment. The initial shock was severe. Yet, his grit and the presence of strong support led him to chart a new path. He slowly picked up his passion again – music. He learnt to play multiple musical instruments (e.g, guitar, drum & ukulele) even after he turned blind. Storesilience (stories + resilience) is a segment where I share short fictional or real-life stories that inspire resiliency, charity and authenticity.
Happy New Year! It's the time where everyone eagerly sets goals. That is good, but lasting and effective goal setting requires understanding of some universal principles or laws. I share 3 Laws (Abudundance, Authenticity and Assumption of Identity) that will surely give you good perspective and improve your goal setting :)
On this episode, Yida hosts me to share my full story with depression, suicidal thoughts, mania, recovery, and starting & growing Rebound w Resilience. If you do look up to me in any way, I must tell you the truth. I didn't start out this way, under the clutch of mental health challenges, I've done many extreme things, and struggled a lot before getting here. I hope by being fully vulnerable, society can see that recovery is possible and stigma is vulgar. I hope you will get awareness into mental health conditions, and take it seriously. I hope my sharing will help you to help yourself, or help others better. And most of all, I hope you know that your demons in the past, are just fallen angels about to rebound and fly. And I don’t just hope, I KNOW that your past pain can become your present purpose and power.
We're proud to release our first episode on our new set! Where I introduce my new co-host and producer Phua Yida. Yida is a mediacorp actor, producer and content creator. He grew up acting in many children shows and was exposed to a different work style and life. This led him to question the narrative of having a 9-5 job and lose interest in studying. Also, after acting in a then-popular show 'On the Fringe', his fame peaked, and being recognized led him to feel an imposter syndrome. All this led to an identity crisis, which he slowly came to terms with after mentorship, engaging in personal development, and finding meaning. We discuss his journey and also his acting career and its link to mental health and wellness.
Ng Kai Yuan is one of the 4 co-founders of 'Our Grandfather Story' (OGS), a digital media and publishing company that aim to tell timeless stories in Singapore and in Southeast Asia. In 3 years, their FB channel has grown to over 300k followers, their Youtube Channel to over 200k subs, with some videos reaching millions of views. Much of this owes to the strong branding and unique content OGS brings to the local scene, which is sometimes criticized for click-baity content. My personal favourite segment is 'Can Ask Meh', where select group of people are invited to share answers to deep and personal questions to often misunderstood topics, do check it out on Youtube! Yet, behind all the success, is plenty of hard work, challenges, resilience and passion of the entire team. On this episode, I speak to Kai Yuan about the origins of OGS, its growth and challenges, their vision, and of course, how to tell amazing stories!
Janice Tee left a 9-5 job in world-leading recruitment consultancy to start her own coaching business, helping individuals and marketers develop a clear niche and route to monetization. She was homeschooled till 18, and entered University without holding any formal certifications. This helped her internalize and embody full ownership.
We discuss her upbringing, University application, stereotypes about beauty and brains and her struggle with dichotomous labels. Lastly, Janice shares in detail what it means to take full responsibility and ownership over your goals, routines and habits. Janice embodies intentionality, and her strength and clarity are apparent in her words and actions. A must listen if you want something more in your life and need a wake-up call (or a slap).
We review psyhcholgist Shelley Gable's framework on 4 ways people respond to good news being told by another person. Depending on which you choose, you can either increase or decrease your connection with them.

At 17, Maxx Ng is our second youngest guest to date. Months before his 'O' levels, he lost his memory in a medical mystery. His friends and teachers doubted the legitimacy and questioned his integrity. This worsened his initial suffering and confusion. In the same year, he was diagnosed with Dyslexia and Asperger's. Yet, he harnessed all the negative energy and used it to propel himself forward. His articulation of his thoughts are fluent and cogent and makes for an inspiring listen, especially for teens or anyone who has been put down or trodden on.
Takalah Tan was at the prime of his life. He chalked up notable accomplishments; an achieving athlete, serving as a commando officer, and graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. As a fresh graduate, he edged out 7000 applicants to land a coveted role in P&G.
On May 24,1994, a week before he was due to start, he met with a horrific motorcycle accident. He was flung 70m away. He handed on his face, and it shattered. Doctors gave him 0.1% chance of survival. He did survive, but had a complete loss of memory and knowledge.
When he awoke, he was like a newborn again.
This episode recounts Takalah’s second life. The depth of his wisdom and will is indescribable. Judging purely on will and resilience alone, this podcast was the most impactful one I’ve hosted. Takalah is Malay for ‘can’t lose’ –an identity that Takalah holds dear and lives by. His mission is to be victorious over himself, and be a beacon of light in troubled waters. He deserves a much much bigger audience. I promise you it is impossible to listen to this episode and not change your perspective.
With an increase in expectations and workload, I got a bit anxious recently. Nothing serious, but enough to take note. One thing that helped a lot was a complete decluttering of my physical space and workspace. Our outward expression of our life is an inward reflection of our thoughts. I share some interesting insights I gained that I never expected. Was fun recording this! Here's the link to the article: http://reboundwithresilience.com/blog/5-unexpected-amp-insights-from-decluttering-amp-why-you-should-consider-it
Suicide is a sensitive, stigmatized topic. Hence, we avoid discussing it. This could lead to misconceptions and unhealthy judgments around it. On this episode, Jenny Teo shares vulnerably about losing her son Josh to suicide; the factors at play, the trauma she went through, and her tough journey of recovery. We also discuss suicide and mental health in society, and what we must do to become more inclusive and emphatic towards those in pain.
This was by far the most difficult podcast I hosted. I cannot imagine the pain that Jenny and Josh had to go through. Yet, I am comforted by the fact that she found the strength to turn her pain into purpose. As Jenny shares: “I do not want Josh’s death to be in vain. Everytime I speak, I can feel his presence. I am his mouthpiece”. We hope that by recording this, more people can ask ‘Why the Pain?’, instead of asking ‘Why Suicide?’
Do support Jenny’s advocacy and education work below:
She runs Stigma 2 Strength Singapore. In Memory of Josh Isaac. It's an initiative that aims to apply a more unconventional approach in addressing the topic of suicide and all other stigmas, from the perspective of one with "lived experience" ie evidence-based merged with research-based narratives https://www.facebook.com/S2SJJ
Jenny is also part of PleaseStay. Movement. It’s a movement started by a group of mothers who lost their children to suicide. In the midst of their grief and pain, they found the strength to come together to advocate for suicide prevention and more support for children at risk of self-harm. https://www.facebook.com/PleaseStayMovementSingapore

On top of being a student at NUS business school, Vanessa Ho is an entrepreneur/host/actor/DJ/writer/media influencer. Despite her success at a young age, she is incredibly humble and constantly works to improve and give back. We discuss her mindsets & milestones - discovering and nurturing her talents, entering the New Paper New Face modelling competition at 15 and her Star Search journey, how she manages multiple commitments, and the why and how of building a slash career. Especially for youth, young adults or anyone looking to shift their paradigms to work, this episode will surely relate and provide value to you 😊 Hope you enjoy it!

I’m also very EXCITED to announce the launch of a 3-part online workshop on holistic resilience that I’ll be conducting on 17, 18 and 21 October😊, in partnership with www.berryhelps.com, a website dedicated to holistic health.
In conversing with others, one gap in building resilience is that it may be incorrectly associated only with toughening up or mental strength. While those are important, a holistic approach is most effective. I’ll be conducting a free zoom talk on 11 Oct, 2pm (SGT) to share 4 core pillars of holistic resilience, and share mindsets and tips to overcome fear of failure, and respond (and not react) effectively to stressors and setbacks.
Do register for it here: https://www.stream.club/e/Om0aMNxLU
To be transparent, though the 1-hour session does serve to increase sign-ups for the paid one, it is not the only reason I’m holding it. I designed it to provide value and inspiration even if you decide against going for the paid one, or are 100% sure you won’t. So do join us regardless! (There will be no high-pressure sales or timed promotions, that’s not how I wish to get people to participate)
Most of RwR’s business is done B2B, but one major motivation doing a B2C is the desire to connect with followers online and provide value. I sincerely appreciate the kind comments some of you have sent, it really does mean a lot to me, and I’d love to engage you all too.
U.K Shyam is the current national 100m record holder at 10.37s, a record which stands since 2001. What’s more striking is the circumstances under which he did it. Having come from a single-parent family, he grew up facing insecurity and lowered self-worth. He discovered his talent and found solace in track and field, which ironically also become his source of heartaches. Lacking funds and dealing with systemic challenges, he came to a point where he was ‘running on empty’, as his book title suggests. This led him to leave the sport, only to have circumstance change its mind briefly, and offer him a hand at the last hour.
On this episode, I’ve had the privilege to listen to Shyam recount his story. His vulnerability and candidness made for a very raw and real podcast. To what extend can we transcend our circumstances? Yes, he believes dreams and hard work are important, but also acknowledges the stronghold of bad hand. Also, in his words, the bigger the dream, the finer the details need to be. A must listen if you’re pursuing a sporting dream or any dream for that matter.

One thing that haunts me, is that after most programmes or talks, deep down I know that if there's no follow up, most of it will be lost. This is why I put time and effort in creating online material (like this podcast) to increase the retention and chance for change. In this episode, I share 4 simple 'A's to follow and keep in mind to create lasting change.

Note from host: On 4 Sep 2015, I listened to a speech on Youtube. I had no idea who the speaker was. Yet, I was brought to tears. I didn’t just hear the words, I felt it.
I felt the passion to build a more compassionate, humane society. I felt it when he said we must care for the less fortunate. And most of all, I felt it when he said we must have the courage to dream and to stand up for others.
One line in particular viscerally connected with me.
“I tell my kids…that it’s better to end up with a bloodied nose, than become cowardly and indifferent in the face of injustice”
Back then, I had just overcome some mental health issues. In that journey, there were times I felt alone, and utterly helpless. I was fortunate - I had help and the best parents in the world.
With the gratitude of recovering came a deep drive and a dream- to champion to a more inclusive, compassionate and resilient society, where we define success not just by our accomplishments, but by how we treat people who do not have any accomplishments. And where we help youth to understand how ridiculous it is to define their worth by the alphabet.
So I pursued that dream. Almost exactly 5 years later, it is surreal and an absolute privilege to share this podcast with everyone. It was incredibly heart-warming to converse with Dr Chee in person, and not just a public figure on my screen.
It is worth noting that when I first wrote to Dr Chee, he kindly commended my work and told me “he’ll work some things out” before setting a date. I found out later that those “things” was caring for this Mum in her final days. What really touched me, was that he emailed to confirm the date of our podcast during this time - he cared for and kept a random guy like me in his thoughts despite the situation. Just like when I watched his speech, I had no words. Only tears.
Lastly, I (and the organization) am politically neutral, and this podcast was done from a humanistic angle. Further, regardless of political beliefs, anyone can learn from Dr Chee’s resilience, compassion, and how he raised his family. I hope my (and the younger) generation grow up and discuss our future with empathy, even if we don't fully agree on everything. That's the way we must move forward. Enjoy the podcast 😊
