Yes it’s true, after four years hosting Morning Edition on GBH Radio and hanging out with a group of crazy early risers for “The Best Ten Minutes in Radio”, Joe Mathieu is moving on in his broadcasting career and wrapping things up at GBH after today. We remember all the good times and wish Joe well as he moves on, and recognize the synergy of it happening as Covid-19 restrictions end this weekend in Massachusetts. Our audience at 4:50AM really began to grow with the insomnia that this pandemic brought, so closing out this show as restrictions end just seems fitting. Best of luck to Joe Mathieu and THANK YOU for everything. Early Edition will indeed be ending for now, but please stay tuned to GBH Radio for Morning Edition and what comes next.

The Encore Casino is set to welcome full crowds back starting this weekend, but poker won’t be returning any time soon. And we say goodbye to a well-loved artist and author. However this easing of mask policy is entirely contingent on receiving your full vaccination regiment, and that leaves us a bit cautious about the honor system being implemented to enforce that. Pretty important news here in the Bay State yesterday as ZERO deaths from Covid-19 were reported for the first time since June of 2020. We have also reached 3 million fully vaccinated citizens and continue to lead the country in many of those statistics… way to go Massachusetts! The metrics look great here, and things look even better when you look back at the headlines from a year ago, when the phrase “the new normal” was just starting to take hold. After many predictions of a stock market crash if Joe Biden won the election, the reality is Biden’s first 100 days saw the largest period of growth for the indexes since Dwight D. Eisenhower held office. We’re expecting President Biden to issue new guidance concerning masks at some point today, and we wonder if Governor Baker will follow it up with some rules specific for Massachusetts. Well, we had high hopes that our social media streaming struggles would end this morning, alas, they continue on. Bear with us Facebook fans, we’ll get their new streaming system sorted out soon. Covid numbers across the country are spiking again, and the new director of the CDC is sounding the alarm for states to consider slowing down their rollback of a Covid restrictions. Amidst those fewer restrictions, the Celtics welcomed a limited number of fans back to the Boston Garden for the first time in over a year. Chilly weather has returned after a brief thaw, but head on out to Castle Island starting today for a preview of Spring in the form of a Sullivan’s hot dog, and maybe even a few fried clams. This should include allowing up to 50% capacity at theatres and concerts, and 12% capacity at larger venues including pro sports. The Mayflower (II) has returned to Plymouth Harbor after a major restorative overhaul, but the fact that it traveled via tugboat power has us slightly amused. Tough times for the restaurant business continue as the state may further crack down on gathering size. Over 150,000 people wake up without power or air conditioning after Tropical Storm Isiasis moves quickly through Massachusetts. Governor Baker has required travelers to be tested for the coronavirus when returning from out of state. The number of coronavirus cases across the country continue to rise and as of August 1st all residents re-entering the state are required to quarantine or get tested. Karen takes her family to get a test and after waiting in line for hours has a dramatic ending.

Nascar took a big symbolic step yesterday that has many in its audience divided. Across the country we had a weekend of protests that turned into civil unrest that turned into chaos, and last night it boiled over in Boston. Peaceful protests turned ugly as night fell and as police moved in and the unrest and vandalism escalated. Nothing new on that front, but there is news today about some potential re-openings around the state, including the Encore Casino in Boston… and that left us wondering if outdoor casinos are somehow a possibility? Sure cards wouldn’t work too well, but slot machines under the sun? What’s not to love? For the first time in quite some time bald eagles are starting to nest on the cape again, what a way to spice up your new found love of bird watching. It’s going to be stay this way for the next couple of days, so make sure you get outdoors and safely enjoy it. The return of the hot weather means the bugs are coming out to play, and Joe feared for his life last night fighting off one mean creepy-crawly. Some new WGBH polling data suggests that many employees forced into quarantine may in fact enjoy working from home. And drive-in theatres are all the rage right now in the age of social distancing. Even the weather didn’t really cooperate for cookouts, although it did warm up at least. Barbers and hair salons open up today under new restrictions, and most are booked out for weeks… schedule now for a mid-to-late June appointment… or be like Brendan and just forego that whole haircut thing. We wonder if we might have to mention the traffic out there for the first time in a few months… but consensus is probably not, after all, people still don’t really have a reason to come in to Boston. Joe Mathieu has been working non-stop since remote broadcasting came about a couple of months ago, so we’re giving him a much deserved holiday to sleep in and enjoy… by staying home… but its the thought that counts! So Aaron “Radio Schact” Schacter is filling in for us this morning and brings you Early Edition with Brendan and Shelby in the house. We recap the weekend, which included SOME warm weather which tested the limits of the stay-at-home and social distancing orders. We did okay in some spots, but a few others were definitely overcrowded… come on people, you know better than that. It’s a four part phased plan that begins with very strict rules in phase one, but its the first sign that Massachusetts businesses may soon be able to open again. Joe will miss his favorite Gelato spot in Chestnut Hill, which announced it won’t be re-opening as “the new normal” doesn’t fit their business model very well. And the President was challenged about testing numbers during his availability yesterday, resulting of course in him storming off the stage. Same story, different day. The disruptions to the food supply have now hit the fast food industry as one in five Wendy’s restaurants is out of beef and is only serving chicken. Good Monday Morning on this “Star Wars Day” from Joe Mathieu and WGBH’s Morning Edition team. This weekend was epic, especially yesterday, with our first real taste of Spring weather… Sunday was even downright summery. We’re happy to report that despite the great weather, our team saw most everybody observing social distancing and wearing their (soon to be mandatory) masks. This week’s weather won’t be quite as nice, but still better than the April we just came out of. The President held a “town hall” at the Lincoln Memorial last night, which came off as another ‘made for his supporters’ tv moment. Another week sheltering in place is upon us, and given that we’ve been told that the next few weeks may be the worst we face, social distancing is more important now than ever. Most cities and towns are recommending we wear masks while outside our homes… of course if you don’t own a mask that might be hard to actually comply with. Tired of being outbid for supplies, Governor Charlie Baker took things into his own hands with the Patriots help, and secured and executed a deal to bring in over 1.3 million N95 masks from China, a million of which will go to Bay State doctors and nurses in desperate need of PPE. We’re used to calling Thursday “Little Friday”, but when you’re stuck at home for the betterment of society all the days just seem to blend together. We’ll update you on the latest numbers and the latest press conference from the President’s team… but as Brendan points out these daily briefings are increasingly feeling like campaign rallies. In a “town hall” meeting yesterday on his favorite network, President Trump said he’s hopeful he can “re-open” the country in time for Easter Sunday. However the advice from Dr. Fauci and other senior medical advisers indicates that may be highly optimistic and premature to announce. Meanwhile in Massachusetts it’s day two of our emergency lockdown, and for most of us it just feels a lot like last week. President Trump tried his best to spin the impact of the coronavirus on the US economy, but markets once again are cautious and poised to open lower. MA Senator Elizabeth Warren bowed out of the race yesterday at her home in Cambridge, and a lot of tears were shed. No word yet on her next move or who she’ll endorse. Feels like a Monday out there this morning… wake up to it with Joe Mathieu and WGBH’s Early Edition. Milestone win for the Patriots in Foxboro on Sunday… even “Angry Dad” wasn’t quite so angry about it. The largest Celtic gets a winter coat that could warm up half of Boston. Meanwhile at the World Series in DC last night, the crowd was less than welcoming to POTUS and the first lady. Thanks for starting your work week with WGBH.
We made it to Friday… well most of have. The early fall cold and flu bugs have taken Joe Mathieu from us on this Friday… so WGBH’s Aaron Schachter is filling in for us and taking us in to the weekend. A lot of sports on tap including the Celtics home opener, but don’t bother watching the Patriots on Sunday, because according to one Cleveland Browns player, the outcome is already predetermined. Elijah Cummings will be laid to rest in Baltimore today, and we’re following some breaking news of a teacher’s strike in Dedham.
