With an ominous message from the Gospel of John to kick off this episode, Father Joe and Father Rix delve into the challenges of accepting the Love of God in different forms. Between Father Rix's experience of seminary and the loss that followed, as well as Father Joe's seminary and life encounters, it leads to the conversation about the Martyrdom of Saint Lucien, who started engaging with the secular community of Madagascar. With some contemporize issues, like a Black army officer being pepper sprayed by local law enforcement, the difficulty of seeing God's love can be a hurdle. But as this episode wraps up, there is something good to draw out of these moments, where we can start to understand the different way God reaches us.

What does confession mean to us? To we keep it to ourselves or breathe life into words heard by others? With Father Joe having three funerals this week, we are faced with the trauma of loss and suffering we have experienced over the past year. What do we make of the darkness that we encounter, and how can we look to the resurrection as a possible hope and light for those of us who desperately need it. Father Joe and Father Rix share their thoughts on the Gospel of Mark when Jesus calls his disciples to wear only tunics and sandals, giving everything else up. Today Father Joe and Father Rix talk about a hard truth in light of the McCarrick Report detailing sexual abuse issues in the Roman Catholic Church. While the Progressive Catholic Church operates independently and works with tireless effort not to make the same mistakes of our forbearers, Father Joe has had several instances as a Sheriff to both meet and interact with the disgraced bishop in the past. We reflect on the trials of dealing with the harm certain individuals can cause, but the hope that renewed faith can offer. We then briefly celebrate the Feast of Saint Josaphat, and the potential of a new Saint of the Internet in Carlo Acutis, a young man who died far too soon for all he had done for the Church. It's both an intense and reflective episode that looks at both the hard things of religious communities and the great things that can be possible for all who seek. This week, we look at the apostle Peter, seeing Jesus walking on water and coming out to meet him on the water. It's something Father Rix and Sister Nicole discuss from a ministerial perspective, while also integrating perspectives from first responders.

This has been quite the week for St. Joseph Mission, as our House of Worship avoided getting struck by lightning by only feet during a massive storm engulfing the New York/New Jersey area. Father Joe recounts the terror of this experience, while tying together the Gospel for today with the conversation of both the old and the new. Father Rix gives his reflections on Joe’s harrowing encounter, looking towards the community of faith we have been slowly building over the past several years. When we are told to scatter seeds in the Gospel... what does that really mean?
We all have experiences of changing others' perspectives and ideals of the world by giving the gifts that God has given us. We have the chance to explore this in more depth with Sister Nicole, who joins us once again to explore some her past in relationship to a teaching environment.

This week is a look at the statues being torn down across the country, not just Confederate monuments but also those of the Christian faith. Father Joe and Father Rix debate the importance of statues that cross the lines into the importance of those symbols for faith communities, both who have a very different take on what's going on. It's been a difficult week for all of us. This episode seeks to encourage us to take a breath and reflect on the Gospel that is so meaningful to all of us.. John 3:16-18. It's a very special episode today as Fathers Joe and Rix join Sister Nicole for a conversation about finding a spiritual home after a life of searching.
Sr. Nicole offers such a needed viewpoint in her upbringing in the Catholic faith, while dealing with the issues many young folks face in trying to find a hope.

Today Father Joseph Ciccone talks with Father Rix Thorsell about the loss of a dear friend of over 40 years, Jon Magenta, who passed away from Covid-19 this past week. It's a hard story that gets to an emotionally raw level we haven't had on From Police to Priest, but in the sorrow and tears of this episode, there is light and hope reflected in the Gospel reading from Luke 24:13-25. This is a powerful episode that starts off reflective but goes deep into the sorrow many of us are feeling on a day like Palm Sunday where we are so used to public celebration with palm leaves waving in the air, children and adults coming together for the arrival Christ in the city before the Passion. This is a pandemic, but it's not the first one in Father Joe's life, and not the first one he's had to confront head-on.
Fr. Rix and Fr. Joe take a moment to reflect on a both the trauma of this moment, but the resurrection that is taking place in this moment.
Father Joe has experienced this before; not in the 24/7 news culture we live in, but one that impacted the U.S. just as much. It was back in the 1980s when there was a similar epidemic creating fear, uncertainty and more.
In these moments where we face trial, suffering and death, we hope to give a moment of hope in the resurrection that isn't just promised to God's Son but to all of us, as Lazarus was.

This week on From Police to Priest, Episode 13 deals with the horrible story of several NYPD officers being targeted in what has been called an “assassination attempt”.
Father Joe and Father Rix look at this instance, and Fr. Joe reflects on a life-threatening encounter when he was a rookie cop, and how ministry has complicated a view that was black-and-white while in he was uniform.
It’s a challenging take but we hope it provides a moment of contemplation… that when others do wrong, what is the call that God has for us?

We have something different this Sunday! For this week’s episode Fr. Joe and Fr. Rix share a conversation about disabilities and mental illness that affect the lives of so many people. Joe shares a story tailing off last week’s episode for Lt. Officer Marco Napolitano where he was able to save the life of a disturbed person who stabbed him with a knife one night. It’s a powerful story about the potential to do the right thing, even when it seems futile.
When we face crises, we’re pushed to the limit, and on both sides of any confrontation, Fathers Joe and Rix discuss both how difficult this can be, as well as a ray of hope in taking a step back and, at the very least, trying to listen and understand.

This week Father Joe shares a story of both loss and inspiration, remembering Lt. Marco Napolitano who passed away only days ago, in this new year. This is someone who Joe knew long before he ever considered becoming a police officer, and then walked with Joe when he did.
This week is a tribute not just to the goodness of Marco, but for all those in our lives who have made the world a better place, baptizing us in the Spirit of hope and love.
In all the mistakes we make, and the relationships that falter because of that, there is the promise that, if we can accept it, the goodness of those around us will continue on, should we make the effort.
We hope and pray this week’s message offers hope of redemption and new birth, even if it’s not in the way we anticipated it.

Happy New Year! This week Father Joe looks at the flip side from his former life as a police officer, comparing his world, from strictly following the law, with his new world of following the teachings of Scripture by giving love and compassion over penalty and condemnation.
It’s a unique shift that seems to take an almost 180-degree turn from past to present. Joe shares how shedding judgment has led him to a better place in meeting people where they are. More than that, there is a message of humanity, one that asks us for the gift to give or receive compassion from others.

Heading into the New Year, we all look for a new decade of hope and love. Fr. Joe shares a story that can be difficult to hear, but is also far too common. It’s upsetting and shocking, but there is hope in the search for liberation from abuse we can take for granted. We hope to reaffirm that this week.

Today, on the second Sunday of Advent, we enter into the week of Peace. Fr. Rix and Fr. Joe explore the meaning of peace through a heartbreaking 24-hour period where Joe, as a Police Detective, had to endure three different encounters, all heartbreaking, but ones that can call to mind the sacrifice of First Responders and the trauma those encounters can cause.
These stories can be difficult things to hear, but the message that a new day can come from the things we witness and experience is a story as old as time. We hope this episode can give merit to that idea and that a new day comes with the season and with our lives.
