On this episode of the #dobetter podcast, Camille Morgan and Melody Marcelle Sylvain each spend time sharing with us their individual experiences of practicing as Black BCBAs. It is the hope of the #dobetter movement that the growth of listening and learning to BIPOC sustains for years to come as we all work to disrupt the systems maintaining racism in the United States and around the world. After recording this episode, we discussed some of the new information/perspectives learned and there is a plan to have at least one follow-up episode to have a back and forth discussion around anti-racism.

This episode is the 2nd of three parts on addressing challenging behavior and using extinction. In this episode, Megan yet again muses for the listeners and Joe provides his insight as a newly minted BCBA and someone who practices in the school setting. Typically, we are trained to implement extinction with our clients to remove reinforcers for challenging behavior. Often, this results in a drastic reduction in challenging behavior. However, in this episode we discuss, at what cost does this happen and does it make more sense to continue to reinforce challenging behavior instead of using extinction.
The episode starts with a discussion around some of the lessons learned during Dr. Greg Hanley’s training on functional assessment that occurred in Virginia in March 2019. Dr. Miller then provides some examples of different types of learning that might occur during challenging behavior episodes. She pulls from examples of her own experiences as a practitioner and also as a parent. Joe gives his input on these examples based on his training too. The episode concludes by discussing the potential negative impacts of extinction bursts, including loss of time learning skills.

Join us for another Megan’s Musings episode! This time we are discussing the Great Debate: PFA and Traditional FA. Behavior Analysts have incredible behavior change technology at their fingertips for drastically improving the quality of lives of numerous individuals who engage in challenging behavior that interferes with learning and may be harmful to themselves or others. Is the technology that was developed in the 80s and heavily researched since then sufficient for producing these changes or should we be advancing and progressive as a field and embrace the research from Dr. Hanley on Practical Functional Assessment? Dr. Miller and Joe discuss the two sides of this discussion and share their viewpoints.
Before any good debate on a topic can occur, listeners must understand where the debate stems from so this episode opens with a quick overview of the historical significance of Functional Analysis. Then we dive right in to the two sides of the debate: Traditional Functional Analysis vs Practical Functional Assessment. The episode concludes by discussing who ultimately “wins” the debate.
