Today I have the pleasure of speaking with the Founders of Anomaly, Petr Esposito and Liam Spencer.

Anomaly is an award-winning London-based architecture practice that specialise in creative office spaces and injecting new life into old buildings no matter what the sector. ‘Traditional architecture, new direction’ is the mantra they work to; challenging traditions in a world of expectation, they aim to deliver the unexpected and get the most out of every retrofit they get their hands on.

Co-founders, Liam and Petr, started Anomaly in 2017 without a house style, and intending to approach projects for their merits, ensuring every building has their story told.

Petr is a graduate of the Bartlett School of Architecture and Ravensbourne University, with a decade of experience working for internationally renowned practices. He has a great depth of experience from the commercial to the playful, has been involved in notable commercial retrofit projects, and led several residential schemes across London.

Liam studied at the University of Edinburgh (ESALA) and the University of Westminster and oversees all retrofit projects, employing his skill for storytelling and unlocking value to deliver massing and strong brands for leasing. His unrelenting attitude to design enables him to provide support to clients’ decision-making in developing a brief, protecting commercial interests, and producing high-quality architecture.

Anomaly has recently won planning and listed building consent for 40,000 sq ft of Grade II space in the heart of Shoreditch. They’ll be interconnecting 7 buildings, threading a new core within listed sheer walls, retaining and refurbishing key listed elements, delivering a new fully accessible terrace landscape to the rear of the building, adding mezzanines on the ground floor and level 04, and featuring a staircase running through the building… to name a few.

They’ve also recently been announced as finalists in the London Construction Awards for Architecture Firm of the Year.

In this episode, we will be discussing:

  • The profound impact of rebranding on business dynamics and client perceptions.
  • Navigating the complexities of rapid growth and contraction within the firm.
  • Leveraging brand identity to enhance market presence and client engagement.
  • Strategies for fostering a strong, cohesive team culture amidst business evolution.

Hello and welcome to the Business of Architecture. This week I have the great pleasure of sitting down with Mario Cucinella at his new exhibition at the Architectural Association: The Future is a Journey to the Past - Stories about Sustainability which opened on the 21st of September.

Mario is an Honorary AIA Fellow and was also awarded an International Fellowship by the RIBA.

He started his firm, Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), in Paris in 1992 later expanding it into Bologna in 1999, following architectural studies at the University of Genoa and working at Renzo Piano Building Workshop. His main mission is to design and create his masterpieces in a way that not only reduces environmental impact but also conserves energy.

The practice is very interesting on Net Zero and the studio is known for having designed the first 3D printed house made of raw earth. They also run a School of Sustainability (SOS) collaborating with the Architectural Association.

Benjamin Garcia Saxe is the Founder and Design Director of Studio Saxe in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Ben and Rion Willard are old colleagues, having worked together at RSHP, where Benjamin was already winning awards on the side.

His first project was an extension of his masters thesis, a hand constructed bamboo shelter. This was a beautifully thoughtful space that demonstrated the power of design and making beautiful atmospheric, emotive spaces with the simplest of resources. The project earned Ben the World Architect Festival Award for 'World’s Best Private House’ in 2010. "Nature Leads Design" is still the primary theme in his projects to this day.

Ben prefers an approach of being an advisor to his clients, finding out ways to be of value outside the realm of design. He attributes his excellent pipeline of work to this approach in nourishing relationships.

Ben's entrepreneurial mind has also helped provide a new journey into development for Studio Saxe. He shares the successes, challenges, benefits, and risks of being your own client.

This week I had the good fortune of visiting Acrylicize, a multidisciplinary design studio in Hackney. They've cornered a niche market which occupies a number of different territories, from fine art and interior design, to architecture. They are masterful at creating brand experience and awareness in corporate and commercial environments.

I spoke with Global Managing Director, Paul Arad. We discussed the firm's early days, how they found clients, negotiated contracts, and nurtured relationships to grow the business to an international firm with offices in London, New York, and Seattle.

They've done this by following principles of developing client relationships, attracting talent, and nurturing a team so talent sticks around for a long time.

Hello and welcome to the Business of Architecture. I'm your host Rion Willard. This week I am speaking with Tim Bell, Hari Phillips, and Melissa Dowler, the Directors and Co-Founders of Bell Phillips Architects.

In this conversation, we talk about how Tim and Hari founded the practice and what sorts of challenges a younger practice might be facing now if they were to follow the same route. We go deep into public procurement, some of the constraints about it, but most importantly, the power of doing public work and why it's important for architects to be engaged with it.

We get some deep insight into how we can approach tenders, bids, framework agreements, and how to structure practice profitability. So sit back, relax, and enjoy Tim Bell, Hari Phillips, and Melissa Dowler.

Bell Phillips architects was established in 2004 after Tim Bell and Hari Phillips won an international design competition to carry out a major regeneration project in East London. From this first £8 million project the practice has grown and diversified with a portfolio that currently includes a wide range of projects across a number of sectors.

The practice has a strong track record of high quality design demonstrated through high profile competition wins, awards and features in publications and exhibitions. Nevertheless our approach is grounded in a fundamental understanding of the technical, financial and practical issues which ensures that our designs are viable and deliverable. We work at all stages from feasibility studies, through to planning applications, detail design and production information.

Are architectural services commoditized?

Here’s the problem: it isn’t uncommon for clients to undervalue architectural services, to undervalue what it is that we do. And when they don’t value it, they don’t want to pay for it.

This leads to a race to the bottom and unrealistic and hard to meet expectations of clients.

Today I’m joined by Rion Willard. After training at London’s Bartlett School of Architecture and a successful career as an architect, Rion Willard joined the Business of Architecture team.

Rion is the Director of Consulting and Business Transformation here at Business of Architecture.

In this episode, you’ll discover 3 reasons why architectural services get commoditized, and what you can do to prevent it so you are respected and compensated for your creative work.

Are you being compensated both in recognition and money for the enormous value you bring to the table as an architect? Do your clients clearly recognize your value? Can they articulate it? Can YOU articulate it? Often there is a misalignment between the perception of us as architects and our clients in terms of the value of our services.

It is a basic question, our services are valuable, but how valuable?

And how much of that value are you capturing?

It isn’t uncommon for design professionals to have their fees questioned and examined by clients, be price-shopped, and compete with other firms on fee alone. This creates a working pressure that decreases the quality of work and creative innovation, not to mention stress and business problems for practitioners.

Ultimately, any commercial transaction is a transaction of value. Each party exchanges something of value for something they value more. Often, we think of value exchange in terms of money, but money is merely a representation of value, not value itself.

Money has no inherent value, only the perception of value.

This reasoning informs how to position, describe and value architectural services. When we understand this, we realize that value is not a fixed construct, but it is something that can be molded, influenced and shaped.

Today we continue the conversation from last week on how to communicate the value of architecture.

This week, I am speaking to Seán McAlister, one of the Co-Founders of Seán and Stephen, an architectural practice based in East London who specialize in residential, public work, art installations, residential development, co-working spaces, as well as temporary museum installations, and high street regeneration projects. Many architects that I speak to are looking at new ways of evolving their business models. Sean has done exactly that with the creation of the company Pencil and Brick, a one-stop-shop design and build company where Seán has taken on wearing the hats of project manager, contractor.

In this episode, he talks to us about many of the constraints that he experienced whilst delivering residential projects, both from the architectural design side and from the contractor team's side, and how Pencil and Brick seeks to solve many of these constraints.

This week, I spoke to James Tait who is an architect, an author, and an educator.

James was the winner of the internationally-renowned RIBA and RIAS Silver Medals in 2008. Since then, he's gained considerable experience as an architect, leading a broad spectrum of high-profile projects at some of the best practices in the UK.

James is the author of a new book called "Entering Architectural Practice," which is published by Routledge. He's also authored another book called the "Architecture Concept Book," which was published by Thames & Hudson.

In this episode, we focus on the themes that were emerging from Entering Architectural Practice. We discuss the growing gap between education and practice, and what universities can be doing to bridge that gap better. We also look at the roles and responsibilities of how practice can be bridging that gap back to university, making architecture education more valuable and more integrated into what you do as a professional.

There were also a lot of very interesting topics that came up. We talk about some of the working conditions that young architects face and some of the root causes of that. We look at the fees of architects and why that has an impact on the working conditions as well. We also take a step back and look at the saturation of the architectural industry. We ask the question, "Are there too many architects?" If that's the case, "What types of things could and should we do about it?" And "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

James is quite brilliant at being able to paint a multi-perspective argument around these issues facing the industry at the moment.

Dennis has 30 years designing award-winning projects in both Europe and America. He's enjoyed the cultural richness of living and practicing in New York, Paris, and London. He's a French speaker. He believes in the earnest collaboration between client, architect, engineer, and contractor.

In this episode, Dennis outlines this collaborative approach and how a small practice actually might approach larger practices. He goes into a lot of depth about his experience in large practices and small practices and how the two can come together. He relates his own experience of large-scale infrastructure and how that has been translated into the types of work he's doing now in his own practice. Peter Farrall is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool where he is responsible for the Professional Studies as well as being a studio tutor on the BA and MArch courses.

Prior to his current position, he was a partner in a small multi-disciplinary practice in Chester, specializing in the education sector.

Stephen is currently the Professor of Professional Practice in Architecture at the University of Westminster.

He's a chartered architect with over 30 years of experience as the director of a commercial practice and professional teaching.

In this episode, we discuss what brought the two of them together to write the book on fees, and we look at some of the issues that practices face around percentage fees and why percentage fees typically and traditionally don't really work.

We discuss the importance of negotiation in determining the fees and how fees should reflect the risk that the architect is taking on, and why it's important to specialize in a niche and how that influences fees. We also talk about profit and surplus.

This week, I'm speaking to Matthew Dearlove who is the Head of Design of Greenwich Peninsula at Knight Dragon, the development company.

Matthew's career started off as an architect, trained in Cambridge and the Royal College of Art. He's worked internationally. He worked for a brief period at Robert Stern Architects. He was a research associate at Helen Helen Hamlyn Research Centre. He's worked for De Matos Storey Ryan, Anouska Hempel Design. He's also founded his own company called Blocwork, which he ran for a number of years.

Most recently, he transitioned his career from the design aspects over into the role of working with developers and kind of almost being a translator between the value of good high-quality design and public space, and how that can be translated into financial and business gains for developer clients.

Knight Dragon is a really forward-thinking development company that has a reverence for design and has a deep understanding of the craft. Their new project Design District, which is located on the Greenwich Peninsula has involved a number of high-caliber architects.

In this episode, Matthew discusses his career, how he moved over from being an architect into this role, Head of Design with a developer, and how he is able to navigate those conversations between design and business. We also discuss the work behind Design District, how that's been conceived as a major development, how it's working, how it's going to be working financially, how they structured the appointment process, how they came to choose the architects, how they've been working with the designers to create a very unique location in London and its metrics for success.

This week, I'm speaking to Martin King who is an Architect and the Practice Leader of Douglas and King Architects.

Douglas and King grew up in Shoreditch in East London, in a time before it was the uber-trendy design fashion capital location of East London. They were actually one of the architects that were responsible for contributing to a lot of the locale's growth.

Many of Douglas and King's early clients were not sophisticated developers that were buying up land in Shoreditch, but actually, they were laypeople and landowners of underdeveloped properties and semi-derelict warehouses. This created a unique opportunity for the practice in helping develop their design agendas, their expertise, and how they can best be serving these lay developers, and very much put the architect in the driving seat at the front of the project.

Currently, they work with more large housing developers, more sophisticated clients, large city owners, and they maintain that client base of lay landowners and private sector developers.

In this conversation, Martin and I discuss the evolution of Douglas and King Architects. We talk about what Martin calls the "orange thread,' which is the architect's involvement from start to finish of a project. Martin also discusses how to align high-quality design work, business agendas of our clients.

This is a Business of Architecture Bonus Episode.

Hello, and welcome back architect Nation. I’m Enoch Sears and this is the show where you'll discover tips, strategies and secrets for building an architecture practice that lets you do your best work, more often.

Architects and related professionals design our world ...

They make it safe, beautiful and sustainable.

Yet for many, it feels like an uphill battle, and few get the recognition or credit they deserve for their creative work.

Many firm owners become underpaid, glorified administrators, eeking out a living working on projects below their capabilities.

What we’ve found is that architectural ability is just half of the equation, the other half is everything else involved in running a successful practice.

This is because schools don't teach architects how to run a practice.

As a result, society loses out on the creative genius of these professionals who are busy managing cash flow and putting out fires instead of doing their best work.

On this episode, you’ll discover the case studies of 5 practice owners who have structured their practices for creative freedom, fulfillment, and financial reward with the SMART Practice Method.

Business of Architecture has developed and refined the SMART Practice Method over the past decade working with 100+ architecture and design practices.

Recently, we celebrated the graduation of 32 firm owners in our SMART Practice program.

On this episode, you’ll hear 5 of their stories.

And the exciting part is that I want you, podcast faithful listener, to listen to each of these stories, and then cast your vote for which of these 5 practice owners should win the 2021 Business of Architecture Transformation Award.

Listen carefully, and take note on which stories resonate with you, which stories move you.

You need to cast your vote by this Thursday, April 29, 2021. Vote by going to businessofarchitecture.com/transformation

This week we are continuing the conversation around money with Entrepreneur Aja George.

Aja spent a decade in the dance industry working with people like Keke Palmer, Omarion, Chris brown, P!nk, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber. He had the opportunity to work on prestigious award shows such as MTV’s VMA’s, Nickelodeon’s TCA’s, the Grammy’s and the Oscar’s as well as featuring in movies like Never Say Never and Step Up 3D.

But, he retired from the dance industry when he realized that a livable “residual income” was not possible and that he could never show someone else a proven system on how to achieve the same level of success that he had.

After a few years in retail while searching for his niche and passion, he realized that the people in the industry he spent nearly a decade in had a common flaw. Lack of financial education.

He finally opened up his own business where he would educate families on how to create a family bank and how to build a family business to leave behind a legacy for generations to come.

Since opening his own business and entering the world of entrepreneurship, he’s been able to help dozens of people start their own businesses and teach families about the rules of money and how to be able to leave legacies behind.

In this episode you will discover:

  • What it is to recognise a paradigm that might be a constraint to earning
  • How Aja challenges and identifies commonly held money scripts

Landmark episode this week as Business of Architecture UK reaches episode 100. Special thank you to everyone who has been listening so far and an enormous thank you to Forza who let us use their beautiful showroom space in Great Portland Street for this episode.

To mark the occasion I have an extraordinary guest, Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy UK, a world leading advertising, marketing, and public relations agency. Rory is one of the world's most influential thinkers in marketing, branding, consumer behaviour and advertising.

Rory, is also a self confessed architecture lover, living in the former home of Napoleon III designed by Robert Adam although as Rory says 'unfortunately in the attic'. He also is a trustee of the Benjamin Franklin House in London and a Patron of Rochester Cathedral. Rory co-founded a behavioural science practice within Ogilvy.

He works with a consulting practice of psychology graduates who look for ‘unseen opportunities’ in consumer behaviour - these are the often small contextual changes which can have enormous effects on the decisions people make - for instance tripling the sales rate of a call centre by adding just a few sentences to the script.

Before founding Ogilvy Change, Rory was a copywriter and creative director at Ogilvy for over 20 years, having joined as a graduate trainee in 1988. He has variously been President of the IPA, Chair of the Judges for the Direct Jury at Cannes, and has spoken at TED Global. He writes regular columns for the Spectator, Market Leader and Impact, and also occasional pieces for Wired. He is the author of two books: The Wiki Man, available on Amazon ("at prices between £1.96 and £2,345.54, depending on whether the algorithm is having a bad day"), and the best-selling Alchemy, The surprising Power of Ideas which don't make Sense, published in the UK and US in May 2019. This book is phenomenal and an absolute must read, as Robert Cialdini said "Veins of wisdom regarding human functioning emerge regularly and brilliantly from the pages. Don't miss this book.'

In this episode you will discover:

  • The 4 different types of property value and how architects can utilise these
  • How 'cool' is the currency that can be used to compete against wealth to create desirable services, products and property
  • The important role maps play in determining property value

The future of architectural practice is emerging in pockets all across the industry. In one such pocket is Bryden Wood, a technology-led design company of architects, computational designers, engineers, analysts, software coders and industrial designers, collaborating with a shared passion for improving outcomes.

I was blown away by my visit to their offices a few months ago, pre corona, to see how this design organisation was bringing together a broad range of specialisms, working across a broad range of sectors with a single purpose - to transform the global design and construction industry.

Bryden Wood is leading a vision to bridge the gap between design, construction and manufacturing to create a highly productive, digitally-led industry which improves the sustainability, efficiency and aesthetic quality of all aspects of the built environment, lowering the financial and carbon cost of assets to business and society.

I sat down with Jaimie Johnston, Director and Head of Global Systems at Bryden Wood who took me through the evolution of the practice and their pioneering work.

What I found most powerful in this discussion was Bryden Wood's ability to understand their client's problems with such deep clarity and analysis and their open source culture. Before any design solutions are proposed, and through relinquishing the need to solve all problems with a building, Bryden Wood encourages client's to produce problem statements, which can be interrogated through an architectural lens.

In this episode you will discover:

  • The unique way Bryden Wood develops long lasting working relationships with multi-headed global clients

  • How their problem statements have allowed them to enter into new sectors

  • Why open source culture for architecture speeds up efficiency and improves design

This interview was one of the last times I properly stepped outside the house, a few weeks before the lockdown in the UK.

I had arranged this interview with Daniele Sini of Richard Markland Architects to discuss their innovative methods of project delivery and software usage, where they have adapted gaming software and virtual reality to communicate design ideas with clients and consultant teams.

However when I visited their office their team had begun working from home, and they were adapting their innovative set up to create a virtual studio.

Daniele is a very experienced architect. Having spent over seventeen years in professional practice, and in the last twelve years he has been leading complex projects from initial design to completion. Currently he is the project lead on a large newly built private residential building amongst others.

In this episode you will learn:

– The software mix RMA are using to produce ‘real time’ photorealistic 3D models

– How the studio has enabled it’s staff to work remotely

– How the studio uses virtual reality to assistant client decisions and how in the not to distant future will even hold client meetings in VR.

Who said Architecture had to be buildings?!

Consider that maybe 60-70% of the architectural work we do doesn't get built.

Does that work still have value?

Of course it does!

Now consider that some of the fastest growing companies in the world right now might actually be architectural in nature, i.e. they employ a non-material solution to architectural and urban problems.

Uber utilises tech to offer an alternative to transport infrastructure, Airbnb facilitates the movement of people without the need of new hotels and buildings.

These are all ideas that wouldn't have been out of place as 5th year architectural proposals in progressive universities.

Personally I think one the biggest latent opportunities for the architectural industry and for us as entrepreneurially minded architects is moving outside of what is traditionally considered architecture.

This isn't new thinking particularly, after all Hans Hollein was talking about this in the 1960s.

So it was with great pleasure to spend a morning with British Iranian Architect Omid Kamvari of Kamvari Architects and Pheromone to discuss exactly this and his work as an architect, researcher, educator, and entrepreneur.

Omid specialised in Emergent Technologies and Design and is considered an expert in advanced digital design in architecture, lecturing internationally, on advanced manufacturing and design, robotics and algorithmic design. He holds positions at the university of Brighton and Nottingham, as a Senior lecturer on Technology. Omid has an astute business mind. He was responsible for numerous international short term education courses (Incubator/Accelerators) transforming standardised educational models. He has represented publicly listed companies at board level transforming internal structure and organisation and managing stakeholder and company growth.

In this conversation you will hear Omid discuss

  • The potential for non-material solutions for architectural business

  • The latent opportunities that exist for architects, students and businesses in disciplines outside of the architecture such as in tech and data

  • How he co founded a smart and flexible data aggregation platform that collects business analytics for easy use

Our minds are our greatness asset. And in Business, Architecture and life the quality of our experience, from our happiness to the our ability to be creative and enjoy our work, is in direct relationship to our mental fitness, hygiene and well-being. It is not uncommon that working practices considered necessary for vast output actually end up being counter productive to the goals we are looking to achieve.

This week I speak with Ben Channon on the subject of Mental Health in architecture and in business. Ben is an Associate at Assael Architecture, where he has worked since 2012. He is Mental Wellbeing Ambassador at the practice, which has won a number of awards for its approach to staff care.

He is an accredited mindfulness practitioner with the Mindfulness Association, and recently qualified as a WELL Accredited Professional. Ben also founded and chairs the Architects’ Mental Wellbeing Forum, which is focused on improving mental health within the industry.

Ben was selected as a RIBAJ Rising Star 2018 and a RESI Trailblazer 2019, for his work in the area of architecture and mental health.

In this conversation you will learn:

  • How you can improve you physical working environment to support you and your team's well being

  • Why meditation and mindfulness isn't just for monasticism but can be used to increase your happiness, well-being and fulfilment in life and work

This week I respond to a recent micro poll, which I conducted on social media that asked architects what they thought the biggest challenge facing the industry is. The results came in showing that the 'Low fees' were considered the biggest challenge followed by climate change, with many commenting that our ability to influence climate change is related to our ability to produce revenue.

Do you agree? I shared the results from the initial poll all over social media and asked the question do you agree? Do architects actually have low fees? and if so why? What are the reasons behind low fees across the profession? What do you think the practices who command high fees doing? (I give some case studies of some practices I spoken to who are crushing it).

The posts and polls were viewed by over 6000 people and many of you responded and gave your insights. This podcast is a curation of some of those comments and ideas from architects, marketers, property experts, business owners, media institutions, students and industry thought leaders with some of my own commentary and thoughts on the subject.

At the Business of Architecture UK our mission is to help architects command the fees they desire and our ongoing industry research helps us refine and develop our tools, strategies and consulting. So I want to thank everybody for their ongoing contribution and encourage everyone to view this as conversation that is important for us all to participate in, so please your thoughts and ideas in the comments or email me at rion@businessofarchitecture.co.uk

In this episode you will discover:

  • An array of industry opinions to the root causes of low fees

  • Examples of what leading practices are doing to command well deserved fees and how they are winning work

Some of the most powerful lessons in business can come from interacting with other disciplines and industries.

In this podcast I begin a series of conversations that will continue throughout 2020 where I will speak to a number of business owners, entrepreneurs, app and product developers outside of the architecture industry to understand their stories of creating, organising and building businesses.

This week's story captures the early stages of a new social network driven by civic responsibility and purpose.

I thought this story particularly pertinent to architects as I am meeting more and more architects who are in the process of developing their own apps and tech platforms.

Our profession typically also upholds and shares the same social purpose and desire to contribute to society as this week's guest.

Simon Puleston Jone's entrepreneurial venture begins after a distinguished career having been CEO and then Head of the Futures Industry Association (FIA Europe), Chairman of the Joint Trade Association Group (JTAG), Director at Barclays Investment Bank and prior to that he was solicitor in the Capital Markets Group of the Financial Markets Department of Simmons & Simmons advising on global investment banking and corporate clients.

After an eventful year with a number personal and professional transitions a powerful and transformative personal development and training seminar catalysed within Simon an entrepreneurial hunger and desire to serve others and the environment.

Based on the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals the idea was to use tech for good and create a new global social network for individuals, nonprofits, companies and other platforms that are making a difference by taking action on today's pressing social and environmental issues - from climate and sustainability to diversity and beyond.

The app became 'Woken Up.'

In this episode you will learn:

  • How Simon took a mission and a vision from idea to app

  • How early seed investment can be raised and what obstacles are involved

  • How having an appetite for risk whilst knowing how to manage it in an entrepreneurial venture is essential

In this week's podcast I include a segment from my recent webinar "Fail Forward, Fail Fast", which explored how we can utilise the iterative design, the same way we design buildings and apply it to designing our businesses.

Learning to re-frame our business mistakes and failures as part of an evolutionary cycle takes much of the sting out of the pain of going through them and also allows us to see them as contributing factors to growth and sustainable business.

If we learn from our mistakes they become some of our greatest allies in building fulfilling businesses.

I was absolutely delighted and fascinated to meet this week's guest on the Business of Architecture UK. Dr Thomas Yarrow is an Anthropologist at the University of Durham, who has recently completed an ethnographical study of architects at work, through an intimate observational collaboration with architecture practice, Millar Howard Workshop.

Dr Thomas Yarrow completed his undergraduate degree in archaeology and anthropology at Cambridge University before undertaking his PhD in social anthropology also at Cambridge University, completed 2006. After completing his PhD he held a Leverhulme fellowship in anthropology at the University of Manchester. He has also lectured in anthropology at the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham and at the School of Environment Natural Resources and Geography, at the University of Wales, Bangor.

His book 'Architects: Portraits of Practice' explores the ‘struggle & doubts of the design process’ & 'explores the architect's world of anxiety, exhilaration, hope, idealism, friendship, conflict & personal commitment that feeds creativity'.

In this Interview the following themes are explored and reflected upon - The Revolution of the Everyday - how our sense of a utopian future can obscure the utopias of the everyday - The potential for the future of the architect is lies in our ability to thoughtfully reconcile complexity - Why the real power of the architect is our confidence in dealing with the uncertainty of 'not knowing'.
