Trying to put together a one thousand piece jigsaw without the finished picture in front of you can be frustrating. Trying to build the future without knowing what God's vision for it is can be equally frustrating. You have no idea where you are headed.

Nehemiah understood the importance of seeing God's bigger picture. He would have been anxious to start rebuilding Jerusalem's walls as soon as he had heard about their destruction. Jerusalem was defenceless. But before he did so, he took time to examine the problem so he had a clear picture of what God wanted him to do.

The Salvation Army in the United Kingdom and Ireland has a big picture of what God is calling it to do: Love God, Love Others. How that looks in individual contexts may be different, but that's God's vision for us. This picture is what sustains us. It's what keeps us going. If we can grasp that vision today, then the pieces of the future will fall into place as God leads us towards that vision.

Sunday's Battle Ready Sermon: Are You Heading in the Right Direction?

This week we begin a new four-part series called Known, looking at one of the most popular psalms in the Bible, Psalm 139. Many Christians have "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" plastered on posters, t-shirts and mugs. But to focus on that verse in particular makes it sound as if the psalm is all about us. It's much more about God and who he is! We look at four characteristics of God outlined in the psalm.

This sermon focuses on God's all-knowing. Because he knows everything and knows us inside and out, only he knows what the future holds for us. That's why it's vital to seek his discernment in all things.

In this sermon for Good Friday, we focus on the cross. It is a scandal that an instrument of torture should be the symbol of the Christian faith. But it's even more of a scandal that the Messiah should die to reconnect us with our Creator.

This sermon continues our series on Scandalous Love, looking at God's love from different angles. Today's angle may seem less popular - looking at his love as a devouring fire. This suggests his wrath, but we can also look at it as a refining process, making us more like him in his image.

Basingstoke Salvation Army is led by Lieutenant Rob Westwood-Payne, and exists to welcome everyone into God’s family; equip everyone to follow Christ’s life example; love God with all of our heart; tell everyone God’s story and serve everyone by meeting their needs.

Preparing the way is a common theme in Isaiah's writings. This sermon reminds us that we also need to prepare the way for the coming of the King of Kings, whether that's using Lent as a time of preparation, or as Coronavirus restrictions begin to ease.

God's power looks different to what the world expects. Because of that, God's love looks different too. It's not about power and control. It's about identifying with everyone in the world, especially the outcast and marginalised.

God loves you! In this sermon, we consider how we have distorted the Good News of the gospel by seeing it as a way to solve a contract breach between humans and God. God's love isn't a contract, it's a covenant. God promises to love us and wants to win us back to him.

As we launch The Salvation Army's Self-Denial Missionary Appeal for 2021, we consider what self-denial means. It can be heart surgery for us, ensuring that God is enthroned in our hearts rather than anything else. It's a spiritual discipline that can help us discover the best things for us, by giving up the good things.
