Nature Reliance Podcast: Recent Episodes

Nature Reliance Media

Cutting through the noise - one episode at a time. Nature Reliance School was founded in 2006 with the goal of helping people feel safer and have a more enjoyable time outside. Sometimes that looks like an edible plants course, other times a man tracking course for the military. Our podcast is no different. We will cover many topics, with the end-goal being to educate, excite, or enrich your time in the great outdoors. Let us know what you think of our podcast at podcast@naturereliance.org.

In this interview Craig talks to Shane Kerwin aka Doc K. Shane is the Founder and Lead Instructor of Personal Survival Solutions, LLC. Shane lays out his extensive and impressive background first, which sets the stage for the rest of the discussion. Special Forces soldiers are the best in the world at gathering human and other resources and making working teams from what is gathered. This is an excellent skill for any organization, especially for families related to disaster readiness and resiliency.

Please check out Shane's website at: https://www.personalsurvivalsolutions.com/

Consider him for any class you find useful to you and yours. He is an excellent instructor and communicates to class participants on all levels.

Here are some questions from the interview.

  • What lesson from your military background helps you the most in daily life?
  • I have heard you use the term "protective preparedness", what does that mean and how do you help people with it?
  • Is that the same as building an individual "protective system?"
  • When you surround yourself with good people what does that look like for you?
  • What sort of roles do you think each family, or group unit should have? (Medic, Security, Communications, etc?)
  • What are the critical aspects of teaching other people skills? (any skills)
  • What are the critical aspects to communicating effectively? (I always hold you SF guys in high regard with this, and love hearing your take on this)
  • What are your goals for PSS moving forward?

If you like a good story that starts out rough and points towards success this is it. We begin with Jon Turner and his service as a US Marine and land on his family farm in Vermont several years later. Helping kids learn how to handle single-digit cold and love it, utilizing and teaching others how to take plants and animals from field to fork, and demonstrates how one good Marine and others like him, can transition from military life and the rigors that go with it to life outside of the setting. I must say, it still looks a lot like service to me.

Many in the NRS community are fans of the Hill People Gear brand packs, kit bags, and more. In this podcast, Craig interviews Casey Gorsett, brand ambassador, and Kevin McDowell, director of marketing for HPG. We specifically wanted these guys on to discuss big game hunting in the Rocky Mountains and they did that very well. Casey is a well-experienced hunter and Kevin is new to hunting so this offered a wonderful opportunity to get their perspectives on the ins and outs of hunting out there which is very different than what we experience in the Eastern Woodlands. We talk about the terrain, weather, gear, and packing those big critters out. We certainly did not ignore our common use of HPG gear and how that benefits them in this type of hunting and backcountry travel.

Craig is more than pleased to interview Mr. Les Stroud. There is no one like him. Filmmaker, musician, survival teacher he is these things and so much more. In this interview, Les talks about the differences in shooting video when he started vs. now, his music and the role it plays in his life AND survival situations (that discussion is surprising), and yes, we could not pass up the opportunity to discuss Sasquatch aka Bigfoot. We cannot thank Les enough for taking the time to come on with us.

Podcast #2:  How to prepare so you don't die in the outdoors.

View Details

I'm your host, Tracy Trimble. Now, I’m a firm believer that if you do something with risk and haven’t had an accident then you just haven’t been doing it long enough, because accidents will happen. It is like an undefeated boxer. An undefeated boxer is just an individual that hasn’t fought long enough. Defeat is bound to happen and an accident is bound to occur. Such an accident hit our search and rescue team back in 2019. If you have listened to the PC before you know that I am a member of a SAR team that services Central KY and primarily the Red River Gorge area. This team is an all-volunteer team but is one of the most professional organizations I have been associated with and that is a direct reflection of our leadership: John May, our Chief; Mike Hackett, our assistant chief; and Mark Ryan our training officer. Today John and Mike join Craig and me as we discuss that 2019 accident. The following discussion details a fall that John underwent when he and another teammate, Becky, were rappelling to gain faster access to a lost hiker. John and Mike detail the small errors that culminated that night. They discuss the errors, the uncontrolled descent or fall, Mike’s medical assistance to John, raising John back to the cliff’s topside, and John’s injuries and recovery. Note that the team provided us with photos of that night and we have included them in a blog located at naturereliance.org.
