I’ve always been able to take a body shot. A bulletproof core has always been my superpower.

It allowed me to become a dominant Muay Khao fighter, completely unfazed by trading the heaviest of knees in the clinch…

Confident I could inflict much more damage than I would take.

To take a Muay Thai body shot you must both develop the prerequisite core strength and shot absorbing technique.

The truth is, that even a strong core can only absorb a body shot without taking damage IF it’s tensed. And there’s a skill to this!

In this video I break down this skill, revealing the secrets that turn you from winded and fractured to robust and relentless

Unlike many sports, in Muay Thai you can excel regardless of your stature or body type. It's possible to find a personal Muay Thai style for you.

Tall fighters, short fighters, strong fighters, fast fighters! With so many tools in the box, Muay Thai allows you to play to your strengths.

Develop the Muay Thai skill to fight using a style that suits your body type and athletic abilities, and you become a unique puzzle to crack!

I practiced several different martial arts before I found Muay Thai – Judo, Kyokushinkai karate, Taekwondo, Boxing, Kickboxing...

But none of them afforded me the freedom to fight full force, using my whole body like Muay Thai did.

Instead of being pigeonholed in a way that disadvantaged me, I could play the game how I wanted to.

With so many tools in your (Muay Thai) box, it's possible to change your fight tactics to beat different opponents.

Explore, play, have fun with your training. The more you can find your own way, the more success you'll have!TIMESTAMPS:00:00 Muay Thai Really Is For Every BODY00:23 So Many Tools In The Box00:41 Playing To Your Strengths01:07 Your Own Muay Thai "Flavour"01:30 In Other Sports Body Type Matters More01:53 Find A Fight Style That Works For You02:06 Become UniqueFurther notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2024/06/07/a-personal-muay-thai-for-you-youre-unique/

Now in my fifties, the training mistakes I made as a young fighter are finally catching up with me...

If some training is good, and more means quicker results, then even more training is even better, right?

That's how it felt at the time. However, time and scientific evidence have proved me wrong!

The fact is, I'm part of an emerging demographic of caucasian males in their early fifties who, after years heavily involved in sports, now need hip replacements.

Don't let either your enthusiasm or FOMO drive you to make the same mistake. Now over 30 years on, we (should) know better. ;)

Are you a fighter training around injury? Should you be resting up or smashing on regardless?

I've pushed on when I shouldn't have, and needlessly backed off too. There are lessons to learn here.

Injury is part of any athlete's journey. But for fighters, managing injury well can separate you from the competition...

Even for fighters, running efficiency matters! Wasted running effort hurts more than just your running time…

Injuries will catch up with you sooner or later. And don’t assume your running technique is good – even if you’re fast, and you don’t currently have injuries.

I did, and I was wrong!

Although combat sports athletes don’t need optimal running mechanics like say, track athletes, or even field sports athletes might do, fighters must run well enough.

Well enough, not to sabotage fitness testing (like the 12-minute Cooper Run for example)…

And well enough not to cause excessive wear and tear – creating issues such as shin splints, tendinitis, meniscus damage, IT Band syndrome, etc.

In this episode, I share a very quick and simple running efficiency check, and fix. We’ll cover:

00:00 Running Efficiency00:41 Combat Sport Athletes & Running Mechanics01:32 Over Striding Is Killing Your Speed02:46 Correcting Your Running Cadence03:33 You Think You Run Well04:53 Using A Metronome App05:30 1-2 Weeks Practicing05:57 Running On Ice AnalogyFurther notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2024/05/03/fighter-running-efficiency-a-simple-check-and-fix/

The secret to training fighter endurance is to plug the gaps in fighting fitness typically left behind by regular bag work, pad work, and sparring practice.Don't do more of the same, develop what's missing. For most fighters, that means targeting GENERAL ENERGY PRODUCTION – the heart and lungs – rather than LOCAL ENERGY UTILISATION at the muscles themselves. And this emphasis shifts as you get closer to your fight, or toward the end of your training phase if you're not competing.Join me in this episode as I explain this transition and offer two extreme examples:

Fighter performance testing …It’s cool to see how you measure up… But, if you don’t use the results to personalise your training, then don’t bother testing!

Progressing beyond the previous two episodes (weaponising your Anaerobic Threshold), let’s shine a light on how the 12 minute Cooper Run can plug into a battery of performance testing for fighters, and what you can do with the results. In this episode:00:00 Going beyond a 12-min Cooper Run00:39 Baseline testing and identifying limiting factors01:04 The best time for performance testing01:37 Using the results to personalise your training02:43 Balancing “adequate” with “Superpowers”Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2024/04/19/performance-testing-for-fighters-beyond-the-cooper-run/

When it comes to heart rate training, your maximum heart rate is far less important than knowing your anaerobic threshold heart rate.

Most of the time, I don’t care what a fighter’s max heart rate is. But it’s vital I know their anaerobic threshold heart rate…

Was that a hard training session? Your heart will tell you – if you know what you’re doing!

Testing for, and training based on your anaerobic threshold heart rate (your maximal sustainable pace) is the secret to knowing if your Muay Thai or cardio conditioning session was easy, moderate, or high intensity.

Training at a pace above your anaerobic threshold is high intensity, at this pace is moderate, and below it is easy.

In this video I discuss how to test your anaerobic threshold and how to use this information both in your training and to win fights!

This is boosting your fight IQ by weaponising your energy systems conditioning.

Want to get better at slipping punches and angling off attacks? In this video, I break down my go-to combo for drilling evasive head movement - the classic 1-2-3 of jab, cross, hook. The key isn't just bobbing your head, but using footwork and hip rotation to naturally shift your head position as you step into your punch. We start by throwing the 1-2-3 continuous on the spot. Then I show how stepping out diagonally on the hook completely changes the angle and stance. You can go left or right for different looks. I also demonstrate mixing up the rhythm - jab, cross, pause, hook.Other important points I cover: Maintaining proper high guard throughout the combo Curving your body and twisting from the hips to move your head* Varying between 'red alert' (hands up) and 'green alert' (hands down) based on rangeThis builds so many vital skills - angles, footwork, head movement, versatile punching, and defence. Growth mindset for fighters? I used to believe my abilities were fixed - until sporting achievements opened my eyes to growth mindset. After childhood math trauma, I was convinced I lacked numerical talent. But unexpected successes in sports showed me that with strategic practice, I could improve dramatically. My fixed mindset began to crumble.I realised if I could excel in areas deemed "impossible," anything was achievable through dedication and incremental progress. This growth mindset quickly accelerated my Muay Thai.Rather than battling opponents, I saw fights as benchmarks for self-improvement. Win or lose, I focused on skill development. Pushing my boundaries drove rapid growth I never thought attainable. The moral is this: cultivate a growth mindset to accelerate your Muay Thai abilities. With consistent, strategic training and a focus on improvement, your potential has no boundaries. Early sporting successes proved this to me. Your only restrictions are self-imposed.Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2024/01/26/developing-a-growth-mindset-for-fighters-my-own-battle/

Muay Thai guarding is more of an art than a science, and is a critical skill that can transform your sparring and fighting abilities.

Let’s dive into the key aspects that can help refine your defensive strategy to level up your protection, while downscaling your cognitive load – a winning combination for any fighter!

In this episode, we unravel the complexities of guarding in a manner that's both enlightening and easily digestible. Whether you're a seasoned combatant or a fresh face in the ring, mastering the 3-level system for guarding can be a game-changer.

I'll take you through the GREEN, AMBER, and RED Alert levels, each tailored to a specific range of interaction with your opponent.

Starting with GREEN Alert, you'll uncover the secrets to maintaining a poised stance while vigilantly monitoring your opponent's manoeuvres out at kicking range.

As you progress to the AMBER Alert stage, where punches become a factor, we'll equip you with techniques that ensure smart self-defense.

But there's more to uncover. The RED Alert level zooms in on close-quarters combat – envision hooks, uppercuts, and elbows. I'm here to demonstrate how you can maintain an unwavering guard and sharpen your awareness, even when the action gets up close and personal.

I also share my personal perspective on gaze and focus. By mastering where to direct your attention, you're not only elevating your physical defense but also your mental clarity for battle.

Whether you're keen to refine your existing guarding techniques or grasp the psychological underpinnings, this episode has got you covered!

There's even more to motivation than you think... Winning by knockout is the best feeling in the world. Seeing the referee standing over your opponent waving off the fight, you feel almost immortal. But, in a well-matched fight, anything can happen. In an instant, one mistake can render you helpless – all your hard work cancelled out.Nothing else can be done at that moment. But in the hours, days, weeks, and even months after the fight, things can feel very different. It doesn’t matter who you are, your motivation and determination has been severely tested.A seed of doubt is planted. “Have I got what it takes? “Can I come back from this? “What does everyone think of me now?”Some fighters bounce back more determined, while others spiral downward, disappearing from competition, and maybe stopping training altogether. And while it’s important to recognise when we’re being our own worst enemy, there are also external factors that can make a huge difference to our motivation to come back stronger than ever, or even come back at all. Most likely, if you ask your Muay Thai trainer what fitness training you should do outside of your Muay Thai sessions, you’re told to simply run a number of times a week, and maybe do a little weight training if you want to…It’s largely down to you. And aside from “do more” when you have a fight coming up, there’s little guidance and rarely any structure. And this is a problem for the majority of Muay Thai trainers. It’s leaving students with only a basic athletic foundation and no hope of levelling up over time, let alone peaking performance for a fight if the student competes. So why does this happen? It’s largely because those traditional Golden Era Muay Thai methods are still aspirational to most coaches, even if things should have moved on and improved…Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2023/03/31/the-problem-with-your-muay-thai-trainer/

As fighters become more experienced, we must understand how to coach them so they don’t become stale.

Experts in any field are ruthlessly good at the basics.

What marks the best apart from the rest, is their ability to revisit and resharpen their foundational practice.

It’s vital that those at the top of their game recognise both that skill is perishable and can migrate over time, and that merely training for your next fight is limiting your progress too.

What is authentic Muay Thai training now, and has it evolved for the better? Muay Thai has a deep history. And when it comes to the ring sport we’ve all come to love, the period between 1980 and 1995 known as “The Golden Era”, spawned arguably the most talented fighters ever.

Names like Dieselnoi, Samart, Jongsanan, and Sakmongkol demand almost superhero status. They were highly skilled and incredibly tough!

Nostalgists will claim today’s fighters couldn’t stand with The Golden Era greats. And may even consider this as evidence that the training methods back then were superior too.

But, what does this mean for your training?

Your work life and fight life are in conflict. I know you feel the clock is ticking, that you’re running out of time when it comes to finding out how far you can go in Muay Thai.

It was true for me, and it’s true for everyone – regardless if they compete or not.

We all have a “bucket list”, and although Muay Thai is on there, you feel that your work life inevitably gets in the way of your fight life. And you may hate to admit it, but even family and friends crowd out your fight training too!

The biggest challenge in becoming the best you can be at Muay Thai, is how consistently you can train. And this is compounded when you pick up an injury or simply don’t seem to recover well.

“If only I didn’t have to make a living and I could train full time!”

But, even pro Muay Thai fighters have to work to make ends meet – a full-time income from just training and fighting isn’t there (yet).

And even then, the truth is a big chunk of your week is tied up with making a living, regardless if you're a Muay Thai enthusiast, amateur competitor, pro fighter, or anything in between.

This balance is crucial, because at the highest level, fighting careers are short, DUAL careers. Any athlete must prepare for post-athletic life.

Like most westerns, you’ve primarily focused your effort on career first and your fight training second. You’ve built stability, and that’s good!

Not only have you got something else you’re good at to fall back on, but you can better afford the costs associated with training – such as gym fees, equipment, and travel too.

But, finding time to train consistently is the issue! You’re relatively financially rich, but time poor… You begin to struggle with the work life balance.

And your fight life planning differs depending if you have a sedentary job, an active job, or a physical job.

When scheduling your weekly training plan for fighters, although many fighters and coaches are doing the right things, they organise their training weeks too haphazardly to get the full training effect or inadvertently cancel out performance gains entirely.

The evidence is in. Pre fight rituals boost confidence and performance, fact!

Pre fight superstitions and rituals are an inherent part of all combat sports, and are baked into the culture of Muay Thai.  From Pra Jiad arm bands, Mongkhon headgear, lucky amulets, and sak yant tattoos, to wai kru and ram muay dances, modern day Muay Thai still carries many of the ancient Siam superstitions and rituals from its battlefield origins thousands of years ago.

There’s a difference between feeling tired during fights and being tired…

Competing as a fighter is stressful, and the cocktail of neurochemicals and hormones this dumps into your body drastically affects how you feel. Especially early in a fight career, nervousness, anxiety, or even all-out fear, will leave you feeling exhausted without even exerting yourself!

But, I’ve found there can be a disparity between the sensations you feel, and the performance you can produce if you can override them. From the top down, emotion affects posture. And from the bottom up, posture affects emotion. If your training has built good postural habits, then despite how tired you feel, you may well not look it!

Don’t assume because you feel tired, and are facing an exhausted-looking opponent, that you look just as exhausted during the fight too.

In this discussion with Rolf Eijsink during his coaching call, we explore both my approach to maximising deload weeks, and Rolf’s valuable insight too.

Use these tips to deload like a pro… Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2022/10/14/using-fighters-deload-week-to-kill-it/

Regularly practicing this splits, passive, relaxed stretching routine for fighters will rapidly enhance your kicking flexibility.

Splits stretching as shown for just 7 mins, at least 3 times per week, will make a huge difference to your kicking ability at all target heights.

Not only will you reach higher targets, like the head, that may have not been available to you before, but you'll also kick faster and with less effort at all kicking ranges. Including those you could reach before too

This passive relaxed splits stretching routine helps fighters fast-track your kicking ability, and easily maintain flexibility once you've got it too.

Check out this week's video for my splits stretching tips...

Fighter mental strength training isn't only about what happens on the pads or in sparring. Mental strength is built over the long-term from the habits you repeat each day.

In reality, everything you do is an opportunity to either cement the identity of someone who either:

  1. Avoids challenging situations or circumstances or gives up before finding their true limit, or,

  2. Meets challenges head-on and only stops when physically unable to continue

The truth is, the mind quits way before the body will. And training a mind with the mental strength to find out where the limits really are, takes practice.

Take every opportunity you can to train this habit and develop a true fighter's identity. It'll serve you outside the ring just as well as inside it.

Both barbells and dumbbells have their place in a fighters program for exercises like the shoulder press... Either to target specific qualities in different blocks of training, to accommodate shoulder mobility or injury, or simply because of the limited availability of one or the other in your gym!

In this episode all is explained, while I share part of a discussion from a video call with one of my Heavy Hitter clients... He struggled to get hold of two barbells for the Deadlift and Shoulder Press superset pairing in his program.

Armed with the information shared on this call, he opted to use a barbell for the Deadlift, and then use a pair of dumbbells for the shoulder press – so he could compact his training session as much as possible without negatively affecting his results.

Discipline is needed when your motivation has run dry, and it’s exponentially more important! Fighters must build real discipline in order to become the best they can be.

In the last episode, I explained that consistent effort over the long-term makes the biggest difference to your performance. To achieve that, there’s a common denominator – DISCIPLINE.

Discipline comes from caring enough about achieving something that you’ll do what it takes, even when things become difficult.

Let’s break this down into component parts so you can make practical use of it...

Do you know the difference between optimal and peak performance for fighters? Too many fighters don’t, and it’s costing them!

I see many pro and hobbyist fighters alike, rightly working incredibly hard in their training, but mistakenly believing that every session must push them harder than the last.

“Go hard or go home” has its place. However, this attitude is regularly misplaced and over simplified.

Understanding when this kind of maximal effort is needed, and when it’s not, is what separates those that become the best they can be and those that boom and bust!

In this episode, I’ll explain what the difference is between optimal and peak performance training, and how to use both approaches to best effect as a fighter.

The objective is to build long-term performance, so that in a year you’ll be a different fighter. And in a few years you’ll be untouchable!

This is very different to the flat, cyclic progress the vast majority of fighters make with their athletic performance between one fight and the next.⁣

Investing time and effort into developing and using a solid training program pays back in a way that may not be hugely noticeable in the short-term (a month or two)…⁣ ⁣

But holding your focus, keeping with it for longer periods, compounds your progress incredibly – while others slip back (and are doomed to repeat).⁣

I’m looking to work with fighters that understand this, and are hungry to make a real difference to their training.

Mixing these High Resistance Intervals amongst your “roadwork” develops your endurance in a way steady state running can’t...

For fighters, strong doesn't mean fast. Although strength is the foundation of speed, the human body responds differently to various weight training loads & speeds. Yes, to become a faster, more explosive fighter you must first become stronger – produce more force... If you can create more force, you can accelerate quicker, hit at higher velocity and do more damage. That’s the mechanics, but we’re biological machines not purely mechanical ones.

If we want our strength to transfer into the greatest striking power and speed possible, we must target the right kind of training, get it in the right order, and make the most efficient use of your training time too. In this episode we’ll dig into how training with different levels of resistance and movement speeds will affect how fast you can really be. Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2022/08/19/fighters-is-stronger-faster/

View Details

To become a stronger fighter, you must use resistance training correctly... Historically, old-school fight coaches claimed that weight training makes fighters big and slow. But that’s only true if you use resistance training poorly. When used in the right way, weight training can either make you much stronger WITHOUT getting any bigger, or both bigger and stronger together, meaning you get FASTER, not slower!

And as we’ve seen in the previous episode, getting “the wrong kind of big” will sabotage your speed... How you use resistance training is critical.  Weight training is a tool. We can’t blame the tool for bad results if it’s being used inappropriately! Let’s dig into how to best use weight training to level up your fight performance. Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2022/08/05/stronger-fighter-training/

Understanding exactly why a big fighter isn’t always stronger is crucial for fight performance. It explains why some fighters perform well in their weight class and others don’t, and informs how you can best train to dominate your weight class too.

As we’ve seen in the previous two videos, it’s speed that kills! However, the ability to generate the highest possible striking velocity is first dependent on foundation strength. But in order to achieve an effective strength-to-weight ratio, you must build the right kind of size!

For a fighter looking to get bigger, what’s the right kind of size? What’s the wrong kind of size? That’s the focused topic for today. Let’s dig into this now.  Further notes and resources at https://heatrick.com/2022/07/29/exactly-why-a-big-fighter-isnt-always-stronger/

Continuing our look at who hits harder, now we consider fighters in different weight classes and the effect this has on the physics of striking!

The last episode, “Fat Loss: Who Hits Harder, Big Or Fast?” created some fantastic points of discussion. And shone a light on some areas of confusion too. In this episode, I’ll take key elements from Adam’s comment to focus on one area of confusion right now…

“…knockouts in the heavyweight division are WAYY more common.  Yet if we say the strike is proportional to the velocity squared, then the little guys should be generating double and triple the punching power.  If that were true, the lower weight divisions would be KO after KO.”

Adam is right! However this asks a different question to Toni’s one regarding fat loss in the previous episode. So this time, let’s dig into why Adam is right, why this is a different question, and most importantly, what this means to you and your own performance training!

When it comes to fat loss, ever wondered who hits harder, BIG or FAST? Toni did when he asked…

“I have a question regarding weight loss and punching power. Let’s imagine we have 2 genetically identical fighters…Muay thai fighter 1 weighs 90 kg but is physically less muscular and fat.Muay Thai fighter 2 weighs 78kg but is physically fitter, has more muscle mass through maximum strength, explosive and speed strength training.Which of the two hits harder? The heavier or the fitter?”

I love this, it’s right up my street! I’m going to use some simple physics to reveal exactly who wins this punching contest and why!

Fighters burnout all the time. And to optimise both long term fight performance and health, and to peak on fight night, hobbyists, amateurs, and pros alike must learn how to balance high intensity fight training with adequate recovery...

But there are tricks of the trade you can use to plan your training just right. And the same principles apply regardless if you’re balancing the demands of work, family and friends alongside either a full time fight career, an enthusiastic Muay Thai hobby, or anything in between.

Combat sports have so many athletic qualities and technical and tactical skills demanding attention, that training opportunities are inexhaustible! But is fighter performance training healthy?

In truth, the objectives are different when either training for optimal health or training for peak fighter performance – even if both walk hand-in-hand for part of the journey.

There's a tipping point, leading to divergent paths when the need for short-term performance in competition outweighs the need for long-term health.

In this episode we explore balancing training for peak fighter performance while also maintaining good health. Because optimal health and peak fitness are not one and the same.

Many fighters and coaches misunderstand just how much Muay Thai training is really needed to achieve the best performance possible.

Generally, Thais don’t understand how to program progressive training.

They throw everyone into largely the same regimen, regardless if they’re beginners or seasoned pros.⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣And those that can’t keep up, or become injured as a result are deemed “lazy”.⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣Even Damien Trainor shared with me in our podcast together, that after feeling like he was burning out in Thailand, he had to take a day's rest – and then nobody at the camp would speak to him for 2-weeks!⁣⁣⁣

And Liam Harrison has shared his thoughts on this too, explaining his experience while living in Thailand…

That many top 10 stadium-ranked fighters in their late teens are giving up by the age of 21, because the training was killing them!

And founder of Sumalee Boxing Gym, Dr. Lynne Miller goes on to explain how traditional Thai culture makes for slow progress when it comes to taking onboard newer philosophies.

⁣⁣⁣Overtraining is real, and so are overuse injuries.

And there’s a boneyard (of discarded fighters) that you don’t see.⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣I’m not saying don’t train hard...

I’m saying pay attention to your body and don’t break yourself trying to match those that have…⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣a) Incrementally adjusted to tolerate high training volumes over years of training, and⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣b) Are genetically more robust than the majority.⁣⁣⁣

And the truth is…

⁣⁣Even Thais come undone when they’re training changes too much – even in as little as 5 mins work!!

Consider this… Accepted ‘best practice’ is only the ‘best so far’.

In his book Rebel Ideas, Matthew Syed discusses what we accept as ‘best practice’...

It makes sense that if there’s a way of doing things that proves superior, that everyone should adopt it.

But it's important to also realise that the accepted best practice is only the ‘best so far’.

If an alternative method is proven to deliver superior results, then the status quo (best practice) should be amended.

Best practice should evolve through time in a rational, evidence based way.

For me, this is clearly reflected in Muay Thai training…

We should balance the proven aspects of traditional Muay Thai training, with the proven aspects of athletic performance research...

From Buakaw to Petchmorakot... is it real?

Combat sports athletes are constantly bombarded with video clips of fighters using training methods or supplements that are seemingly a shortcut to fantastic results.

Most of the time, these clips are little more than social media stunts, either to market a product or simply to get likes…

And fighters are always up for having a laugh, and playing with some new toy in their training for a session or two.

Certain training methods keep coming around at regular intervals on social media.  Some do help fighters improve, while others either waste their time, or even negatively impact performance.

And in this episode I take a close look at breathing...  Both Elevation Training Masks, and Personal Oxygen Supplementation.

Don’t only rate your training session by the physical performance, such as distance covered, time to complete, maximum weight lifted, number of sets and reps, heart rate etc.

Also rate your mental focus for the session. Ultimately, this IS the most important factor.

Things like illness, injuries, lack of time, or a dog needing to take a dump, all interfere with you perception of what was a productive training session…

When in reality, as long as you are following a progressive training program, all you need to do is three things:

1) Show up

2) Focus on the critical points of the training session

3) Apply sufficient effort

If you’ve done this, you’ve maintained momentum, regardless of what any of the other measures of your session may have been.

Give yourself a ‘pat on the back’. Mentally reward yourself for staying on track regardless of circumstances (good or bad).

Gyms around the world are either reopening or preparing to reopen very soon. It’s great news, but the reality of just what we’re going back to bears some thought.

In order to reopen safely, gyms must abide by new operating restrictions and safe practice.

The reality is that most people won’t be able to return to training just like they did before. So let’s expect this and plan for it.

Practicing - reinforcing existing skill, creating good habits, maintaining athletic qualities,

Spoiling - excessively repeating poor form, building bad habits (either under fatigue or not), and causes overuse injury
