Memory: The Origins Of Alien sheds some light on the early thoughts and process that went into creating the sci-fi / horror fan-favorite. After that, DL talks about the new film Gran Turismo. Like ten's of thousands of other people, Jann Mardenborough had a passion for simulator racing on PlayStation's Gran Turismo. With countless hours racing on the world's most high profile tracks, Mardenborough beat out 1000's of real-world wannabes to realized his dream of becoming a real professional racer. Episode #488! This week Scott is back with an important issue from the history of the X-Men comics. Available from the Marvel X-Men Epic Collection: Second Genesis, listen as he talks about the issue which forever changed the X-Men and lead to the characters and stories everyone knows today. After that, DL has a new movie round-up with three movies currently available at the theater or streaming. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny puts Indy and friends back in action to stop a Nazi threat. Asteroid City is a movie right? or is it? 5/25/77 was the day Star Wars was released. It's also the title of writer/director Patrick Read Johnson's movie about his high school days trying to make his own movies and get the word out about a future blockbuster. Check it out!
Episode #487! This week we are back with works by two absolute legends. First up Scott surprises DL with Otomo The Complete Works vol.s 21 & 22. These volumes collect the complete storyboards of Otomo's animated masterpiece Akira. After that DL talks about two books by Will Eisner. First, is The Plot The Secret Story of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Deeply researched, this book tells of the early 1900's Russian "plot" against Jews to discredit an advisor to Tsar Nicholas II. Flashback of episode #325! This week your hosts are busy with other commitments. Because of that, we are reposting our episode focusing on two works by the great Jack Kirby. First up is his fantastic war comic "The Losers". Featured in "Our Fighting Forces" #151-162, these WWII comics feature some of his best '70's DC work. Episode #455! This week we talk about a lot of Cool Stuff. We are both huge fans of the All-New, All-Different X-Men. Dave Cockrum was the initial artist/character creator/costume designer of those early issues. We dive into the TwoMorrow's book The Life and Art of Dave Cockrum by Glen Cadigan. Speaking of X-Men, Scott brings the Uncanny X-Men Trading Cards book from Abrams ComicArts to the podcast. We also talk 70's action movies with Good Guys Wear Black, A Force of One and Death Wish! Iron Man Demon In A Bottle was written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton with art by John Romita, Jr., Bob Layton, and Carmine Infantino. The story arc ran in Iron Man issues 120 through 128 in 1979. We talk in depth about the nine issue arc that pushed a hero into dark places and set the groundwork for future Tony Stark/Iron Man stories. Give it a listen!

On April 30th during Planet Comic Con in Kansas City, DLNelson and Scott Sackett had the pleasure of interviewing Sara Frazetta of the Frazetta Girls (granddaughter of legend Frank Frazetta) and award-winning author-historian J. David Spurlock of Vanguard Productions, official publisher of Frank Frazetta. Our interview covers a variety of subjects about not only Frank Frazetta's work but also the Frazetta Girls mission to keep his memory alive through his art. J. David Spurlock includes some classic Frank Frazetta stories and talks about his publishing relationship with the Frazetta family. We thank both Sara and David for taking time out of their very busy con schedule to make time for this interview.

In Polar vols. 0-4, The Black Kaiser is dragged out of retirement with a failed assassination attempt. Then he gets busy with a whole lot of killing. At one point many top comic-strip cartoonists lived close to each other in Connecticut. Cullen Murphy's book Cartoon County tells of Murphy's father and his famous cartooning colleagues. Episode #408! Cool Stuff episode! First up, Scott shows off the new slip-cased hardcover Grass of Parnassus by Kathryn and Stuart Immonen. The complete former web comic is now fully collected and is AdHouse Books final offering. Back in the early 2000s, the Wachowski siblings founded Burleyman Entertainment. Their breakout comic was Geof Darrow's Shoalin Cowboy. However that imprint also included the comic Doc Frankenstein drawn by Steve Skroce. Now all 6 issues are collected with 60+ pages of new material all in a deluxe over-sized hardcover from Burleyman. Scott talks about the British television series The Night Manager based on the 1993 novel by John le Carre. DL has two space themed books to showcase. Steve Ditko Space Wars from Vanguard Publishing reprints more than 20 comics from Ditko's days at Charlton Comics. Space Usagi by Stan Sakai tells the tale of a descendant of Miyamoto Usagi set in a future that continues aspects of Feudal Japan. Give it a listen!

We haven't seen the movie yet but in preparation have decided to re-read the first six issues of Jack Kirby's original comics. Although the trailers don't resemble Kirby's comics, we are hopeful some of his source material will be utilized in the new film. Give it a listen.

This new series is fan-fic that isn't sanctioned or published by Marvel Comics. Instead, Byrne has taken upon himself to do his Elsewhen story of What If.... Jean Grey (Marvel Girl / Phoenix) didn't die on the moon. And the art is spectacular! Listen as we talk about issues 7-12.

Episode #395! Scott recently watched a lecture from The Japan Foundation about the global phenomenon Godzilla. He talks about the panel's discussion this week. Free Comic Book Day was held August 14th this year. DL picks four winners from this year's crop. Scott brings Shaun Tan's sketchbook "The Bird King" to the podcast for us to check out.
