Episode 88:
On today’s episode, I’m talking to Oiselle’s Leader of Corporate Development and Family Medicine Physician, Dr. Sarah Lesko, about honoring your values while changing careers.

Sarah is trained and practiced as a family medicine physician before making the leap to a career outside of medicine. Before leaving medicine, Sarah got back into running after watching the ‘08 Olympic trials. Two years later she met the founder and CEO of Oiselle, a running apparel company, by and for female athletes. Eventually leaving medicine, Sarah’s work with Oiselle expanded and she found a better way for her to serve. Through her work with Oiselle, Sarah is able to utilize her training in medicine and public health to support women and girls in sport at every level of competition.

We talk about:
●The twists and turns of her career in sports, medicine, and public health before she found a job where she could bring it all together.
●The multiple identities she created throughout her career and the resilience they’ve provided.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to certified mental performance consultant Dr. Stephany Coakley about creating your own space.

Stephany works with student-athletes to develop mental health skills as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Mental Health, Wellness and Performance at Temple University. She also works with professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, and beyond through her private practice. On the way to where she is today, Stephany developed her craft by creating her own space, like starting her private practice during grad school so she could start getting experience working with athletes. She also worked with warrior-athletes in the military to help them develop resilience. By creating her own space, she was able to gain experience, grow, and learn, and ultimately serve her higher mission to help people realize their best lives through sport.

●How Stephany came to recognize the burnout she was feeling in the early part of her career and the decision to go back to school to get her PhD.
●How hard it is to break into sports and how she started her private practice to create her own space and build experience in her own way.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to the Portland Trail Blazers’ Senior Vice President of Innovation & Technology Christa Stout.

Christa played 5 sports in high school and 3 in college. She has traveled internationally doing development work and has seen the value of sport for social change. Because of a persistent interest in corporate social responsibility, Christa decided to go to business school. As a generalist trying to find her future career, a professor advised her to list out exactly what she was looking for in a job. By considering the qualities she needed in the workplace instead of the job title, Christa found exactly what she was looking for working in professional sports, working first with the Portland Timbers and now the Portland Trail Blazers.

We talk about:
●How taking advantage of every opportunity that came her way in international development, gives Christa more skills than she could ever list on a resume.
●How taking the time to define her values and the qualities she needed in her workplace helped Christa find great jobs after business school.
●The importance of keeping a growth mindset to continue learning the ins and outs of every task as a generalist responsible for leading specialists in their fields.

FRIENDS! AI came up with that title and it is hard not what I would have chosen for myself 🤣

Alternative title (human generated): Taking the Time to Learn New Skills or Giselle Fs around with AI

AI generated episode description with [my comments] thrown in all over the place because, again, WTF AI?:

Ever wondered how AI is revolutionizing the podcasting landscape and professional sports? You're about to find out. [I mean, you're not. I talk about how we need to take time to learn new skills in our careers to make sure we're still developing and not staying stagnant. I talk abut how hard it is to overcome the inertia of doing things the same way you've always been doing things.] Join us as we share our personal experiences of how AI is impacting our podcasting business, from generating captions to crafting engaging content. If you've ever felt resistance in breaking away from established systems and processes, we’ll walk you through the importance of harnessing a growth mindset to embrace novel ideas. We even delve into the creation of a dot phrase, revealing how a little upfront effort can save you time in the long run. [Rest of this is true, and oh, Epic, what fun!]

Our conversations move from the world of podcasting to the arena of professional sports, as we reflect on how being open to new methodologies can be a game-changer. Remember that strength and conditioning coach who introduced blood flow restriction training 11 years ago? [Haha, yeah, do you remember that guy?? Probably not if you didn't work with me, but I do talk about how we integrate new knowledge and skills and the work settings that might make that easier or harder.] We discuss how such unconventional strategies can revolutionize athletes' performance. [Eh, not so much.] We also debate on the philosophical implications of AI and its potential to be the next big thing in knowledge enhancement and skill acquisition. [I mean I specifically said I didn't want to get the philosophical debate, but yes, I did talk about AI as potentially being the next evolution in knowledge enhancement.]

And that's not all! We also explore how AI can support women in sports and athletics, its usage in social media, and the challenges and excitement of using AI for generating podcast content. Ever thought of using a chatbot to come up with an engaging podcast episode title, intro music, or show notes? We did just that! [And I might be regretting it!] Listen in as we embark on our intriguing journey, allowing AI to create our podcast title [again, see regrets], show notes, and social media posts. Our discussions seek to inspire you to break away from inertia, embrace change, and upgrade your skills to soar in this AI-dominated era.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Assistant Professor and Sport Scientist Catherine Saenz about career transitions.

Catherine is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on how exercise and nutrition impact energy metabolism at the molecular level and translating this into personalized performance prescriptions. With one year to go in her PhD program she followed her advisor from UConn to Ohio State which meant she had to retake classes and extend her training. And then again in her first job out, she was one year away from going up for tenure when an opportunity to go back to Ohio State came up and she again took the risk and made the transition. Before pursuing an academic career, Catherine thought she would do clinical work and completed an internship in Dietetics at Iowa State University and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Cleveland Guardians.

We talk about:

  • How to navigate career transitions
  • The trap of excusing not getting started by over-preparing and being stuck in a learning mode or student-mentality
  • Building your confidence and your voice to share the work that you love

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Pitt Athletic Director Heather Lyke about finding collaboration.

Heather is currently the Athletic Director at the University of Pittsburgh and one of just six women ADs leading an athletic department in one of the Power Five conferences. Heather was a student-athlete at Michigan and returned to the world of college athletics after law school, where she’s stayed ever since. She previously worked at the University of Cincinnati and Ohio State before becoming the Athletic Director at Eastern Michigan and finally at Pitt. While at Ohio State, she and five others who shared her aspirations of becoming an AD banded together to form what they called the group of six. Rather than feeling like they were in competition, they would share opportunities to help each other build skills, setting them all up for long-term success.

We talk about:

  • Avoiding the sunk cost fallacy when it comes to pursuing a career option other than the one you trained for.
  • How to stop focusing on failing to achieve a big goal and instead start celebrating the courage it took to say it out loud and go after it.

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and today I’m talking about when do you get to pick the easy choice? In our educations, in our careers, in sports… we’re often taught no pain – no gain. Grind it out. Push yourself. Challenge yourself. You have to be the best, the one, the only. And I’ve been hearing it from other women, and frankly, asking it of myself… when do I get to pick the easy choice? When is the easy choice good enough, and when is it actually the right choice? Just seriously, when will things get easier?

Dr. Lee is an Associate Professor, Director of Research Support, and Director of the Human Performance Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology at UConn. She’s also the first Dean’s Leadership Fellow for UConn’s College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources. Dr. Lee studies the cellular and integrative physiology responses to stress and adaptation to stress. She was a former NCAA Division 1 Rower and Coach and pursued study and research in exercise, nutrition, and 'omics to understand how to help individuals enhance resiliency and performance. While it is hard to imagine that Elaine would ever be doing something else, it took her a long time to figure out the direction of her career. It wasn’t until she discovered how much easier it was to study and learn about topics that clicked with her that she came to realize how important it is to celebrate our strengths.

We talk about:

  • Her journey of discovering what she was really interested in and how she had to break down her expectations for what her career was supposed to look like.
  • How she pushed her whole department forward by providing a new perspective and new tools, even though, on paper, she could have looked out of place.
  • The extra stress that women take on in the workplace when they are automatically assigned the role of “kind person” or “caretaker” and how hard it is to step away from that.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to BPS Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist Dr. Kara-Aretha Graham about becoming the expert you needed.

Kara is currently a lecturer at East London University and a Chartered Sport Psychologist by the British Psychological Society. Her journey began during her time as a track athlete at the University of Iowa when she was diagnosed with cancer at the end of her freshman year. While she bounced back physically after treatment, she struggled mentally for months. Later, during her PhD, she was inspired to tell the experiences of NCAA women athletes as part of her thesis. While she thought she knew what she would find, Kara was still shocked by the layers of their stories and has used this to fuel her on her journey to becoming the expert psychologist she needed when she was an NCAA student-athlete.

We talk about:

  • The unique demands placed on women athletes and how psychology can help.
  • How the need to be perfect, which served us well in sports, can keep us from even getting started on projects in our careers.
  • Sticking to your mission, even when others don’t yet see the potential.

If perfectionism is something you struggle with as well, I’ve put together a free guide on overcoming perfectionism to help you share your unique perspective with the world. You can find it at madamathlete.com/perfectionism.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to athletic trainer and entrepreneur Lindsey Keenan about taking care of yourself.

Lindsey is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine at West Chester University where she’s also the team athletic trainer for women’s rugby. In addition to her academic and clinical work, Lindsey is the CEO and Co-Founder of PROmotion Health, LLC, a company focused on streamlining mental health screening in athletes. Lindsey balances a lot of roles and identities with teaching, research, clinical work, running a company, and being mom to two young daughters.

  • How knowing her values helped Lindsey walk away from her first job (theoretically her dream job) after just six months.
  • How her experiences and interests around mental health in athletes fueled her to get her PhD and to start her own company.
  • The advice she received that helps her focus on her own self-care while balancing work as an academic and clinical athletic trainer, entrepreneur, mom, and all around badass woman.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Margot Putukian about knowing when to say yes.

Margot is currently the Chief Medical Officer for Major League Soccer and has served as a team physician for US Soccer since 1994. She recently retired as the Director of Athletic Medicine at Princeton University and has served as a leader in many sports medicine organizations, including as a past-president of AMSSM. On today’s episode, I’m talking to Major League Baseball’s Vice President of Club Business Operations and Strategy, Kate Hussmann, about networking for women in sports.

Before Kate crushed the sports world, she was considering opening a restaurant and even went to culinary school. Kate initially worked with the Charlotte Hornets in Corporate Social Responsibility before earning an MBA and moving into Strategy and Innovation. We talk about:

  • The importance of betting on yourself.
  • How Kate’s network helped get her into a career in sports and supported her along the way.

On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m taking a moment to shout out all the learners who are currently out there and going through training.

Because here’s the thing… not all parts of your training program are fun or enjoyable or feel like the perfect fit for what you eventually want to do. And it can feel like a miserable experience at times when you're on rotations you don't care about or dealing with teachers you don't like or doing assignments that don't matter to you.

So today’s episode is a little advice and some encouragement to get you through those difficult times.

(And even when you're a full-ass grown up in your job, there will still be parts about your job that suck, and this advice applies to you too friend!)

Previously, she worked at UT Southwestern Medical Center and was a team physician for the NHL Dallas Stars. Kathy is on the board of the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine and is a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. I am especially excited to have this episode go live today, on March 7th, because Kathy is one of many RJOS members I’ve been lucky enough to feature on the Madam Athlete podcast, and if you’re listening on the day this episode goes live, I’ll be giving the keynote address at the 2023 RJOS Annual Meeting in Las Vegas! Kathy has built a career around supporting women working in orthopaedics and STEM through RJOS and the Perry Initiative.

We talk about:

  • Making her first big career decision by choosing to go to UMass on a basketball scholarship over Yale in order to feel valued and supported in her career.
  • How she personally handled gendered pay inequality.
  • The work she does supporting women in orthopaedics and STEM through RJOS, the Perry Initiative, and the Inspiring Women in Engineering and Medicine workshop.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Yuka Tsukahara about staying open to new experiences.

Yuka is an orthopedic sports medicine physician and professor of sports medicine at Tokyo Women’s College of Physical Education. She’s served as a team physician for many Japanese national teams and as the lead physician for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games. Throughout her career, Yuka has not been afraid to do and study new things. When she wanted to understand why the Japanese women’s national team sprinters were underperforming on the international stage, she applied for and received a grant that led her to PhD. Yuka is balancing teaching, research, and her clinical work while collaborating across the globe to learn how to close the gender gap in sports medicine.

We talk about:

  • How Yuka found sports medicine by staying open to new experiences through medical school and continuing to train and compete as an Olympic-level sprinter. She wondered why some athletes got faster and some got injured and wanted to learn more.
  • The discrimination she’s faced in sports medicine, both as a woman and by choosing to work as a non-operative physician.
  • Yuka reveals that her talent for networking and making connections comes from bonding over shared experiences.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Connecticut Sun athletic trainer Nicole Alexander about being authentic to yourself.

Nicole is currently the head athletic trainer for the WNBA Connecticut Sun and previously served as an athletic trainer for women’s basketball at UNC. She’s also been a head athletic trainer for multiple US Women’s National Teams. Doing good work and being herself has given Nicole the opportunity to work as an athletic trainer at the highest levels. She can trace a direct line from her current job to a chance encounter at a conference where she struck up a conversation and showed up as her full self. Nicole is helping to create an environment where everyone can feel comfortable in the workplace and athletes feel heard.

We talk about:

  • How she discovered during grad school that she loved working in women’s basketball and the chance to care for minority women as a minority woman.
  • When Nicole was experiencing burnout, she took some time away, which allowed her to be ready when the next opportunity presented itself.
  • How Nicole draws from her own experiences to make sure that her athletes’ concerns and needs are communicated to the rest of the medical staff.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bonnie Gregory about celebrating your accomplishments.

Bonnie is an assistant professor of orthopedics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and a team physician for several teams including the Houston Dash and the Houston Rockets. She’s also a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedics Society and part of the just 6% of orthopedic surgeons who are women. Throughout the interview, Bonnie shares with us how important celebrating your accomplishments can be because it gives us a moment away from focusing on what comes next and allows us to check in with our trajectory and make sure that it’s really in line with our mission and vision.

We talk about:

  • Bonnie’s journey to discovering orthopedics and how there is almost no single correct path to a given career.
  • How participating in leadership programs helped Bonnie discover her leadership style but also taught her the importance of understanding the rules of the game in order to break the ones that were no longer working.
  • As a woman physician covering teams ranging from the NBA to high school football, Bonnie is helping to change perceptions of what a team physician looks like, opening the doors for a new generation of physicians who look, think, and speak more like the patients they serve.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Emory University Director of Athletics Keiko Price about growing into leadership roles.

Keiko is the Athletic Director at Emory, at a time when less than 25% of all NCAA college ADs are women. Her journey started when she took time at the end of her swimming career to figure out her mission and vision. She realized she wanted to help student-athletes and took a leap of faith to become an academic advisor. As her career developed, Keiko communicated her goals to her mentors, who gave her the opportunities to take on new roles and learn skills she would need one day as an AD.

We talk about:

  • Why building an athletic department that reflects the student-athletes it serves is a deliberate process of reaching out to the right people for the job.
  • How defining goals, whether personally or for an institution, helps you stay motivated when the going gets tough.
  • Why getting a seat at the table isn’t enough for women and underrepresented minorities, and how Keiko is encouraging the next generation to speak up and make an impression.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to physical therapist Dr. Margaret Pittman about building the next generation.

Margaret is a physical therapist at Momentous Sports Medicine and an adjunct assistant professor of physical therapy at George Washington University. She’s doing a lot to make sure that the next generation of physical therapists are exposed to the field and see themselves represented within it. She’s a board member of Minority Women in Sports Medicine started by former guest, Andrea Durham, as well as an Executive Board Member of the USC Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy Black Alumni Association. Additionally, she’s currently back in school herself, working towards her MBA at GW, making sure she has the tools she needs to see her visions through.

We talk about:

  • The challenges of negotiating early on in your career.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Jacqueline Brady about moving past insecurities.

Jackie is an associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at OHSU and the associate director of their orthopedics residency program. She’s a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedics Society and of The FORUM, a group of women sports med orthopedics. These connections and conversations with other women in the field have helped Jackie see the ways so many women undervalue their skills, leading her to publish research showing that women residents give themselves lower self-evaluations compared to their male peers.

We talk about:

  • Drawing from the times where things didn’t work as planned to relate to others currently going through similar experiences.
  • How everyone has feelings of imposter syndrome at some point and finding the balance between insecurity as a motivator versus an inhibitor.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Veronica Jow about overcoming the fear of failure.

Veronica is the founder of Avid Sports Medicine, a multi-disciplinary sports medicine clinic in the Bay Area. She’s working together with her team at Avid to help patients live healthier and more active lives. Before opening her own practice, Veronica worked as an employed physician and as the medical director for a medical tech start-up. Veronica’s taken the lessons she’s learned from the business and tech worlds to pivot quickly when something’s not working instead of going further in the wrong direction.

We talk about:

  • How commonly people switch directions in careers outside of medicine and how this is celebrated rather than discouraged.
  • When Veronica took a job as a medical director for a start-up, she viewed it as a “residency for business” and knew that she would learn, regardless of the outcome of the start-up.
  • Veronica is not letting the fear of failure prevent her from expanding the model of her current practice to a wider audience.

On today’s episode, we’re doing something new and featuring an episode of the podcast Hear Her Sports hosted by Elizabeth Emory. This is a collaborative podswap between Elizabeth and I to help introduce you to new kickass podcasts showcasing women in sports. Elizabeth kindly shared one of my episodes featuring Sports Medicine Physician Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu on her podcast a few months ago and I am thrilled to return the favor!

Elizabeth was a guest over here on Madam Athlete for episode 97 where she talked about starting her podcast, Hear Her Sports, to highlight the stories of women athletes. In this interview, she talks with marathoner and Olympic bronze medalist Molly Seidel.

They talk about:

  • Taking the time to rest so you can ramp up when it matters.
  • Making sport a place where everyone can be both competitive and able to show support for one another.
  • The need for media coverage that doesn’t just routinely cover women’s sports but creates fans and followers by telling the compelling stories of those who maybe don’t make the podium.

You can find the Hear Her Sports podcast on apple podcasts, spotify, and elsewhere!

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports marketing executive Brette Sadler about crafting your brand.

Brette is the Vice President at PRP, a sports management and marketing firm. A lifelong athlete, Brette was drawn to sports marketing because it gave her the opportunity to work on the business side of sports with an incredible group of people. She worked her way from selling season tickets on commission to becoming the senior director of marketing with the Florida Panthers before she pivoted to continue growing and learning new skills on the agency side. In Las Vegas, she worked with UFC and then MGM and founded a chapter of WISE, Women in Sports and Entertainment. Over the years, Brette has maintained relationships both with her mentors and her larger network, so that she was the person they called when they needed someone who would get the job done.

We talk about:

  • The perception versus the reality of working in the business of sports.
  • Crafting your brand and maintaining a personal “board of directors” for your life and career.
  • Cultivating the next generation of business professionals in sports and making sure they’re getting the hands-on experiences that will make them successful.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Caitlin Chambers about leaning on our support systems.

Dr. Chambers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Associate Program Director for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Minnesota. She serves as a team physician for the University of Minnesota Athletics and was part of the first all women medical team for a professional women's sports team in the US with the Minnesota Whitecaps hockey team. As one of the few women in orthopedics (only 6% of attending orthopedic surgeons are women!), Caitlin knows the importance of having a robust support network.

We talk about:

  • How early exposure to orthopedics can help correct the problem of too few women in the field and the work Caitlin is doing with the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and the Perry Initiative.
  • Having robust support networks, both personally and professionally, so that no one person has to do it all.
  • How Caitlin and the other three women in her residency program brought data to their lived experience and authored a paper that has sparked discussion over the years on the number of women and minorities in orthopedics.

Alana is an academic counselor and Associate Director of the Student-Athlete Success Program at UConn who loves helping students feel comfortable being their authentic selves. She started out coaching after college but felt like she needed more training to meet the moments when her student-athletes came to her looking for help, both on and off the field. Alana found a grad program in athletic counseling that led her to her current role at UConn. In the spirit of continuing to seek out self-improvement, she looks for opportunities both in her organization and outside of it to stay energized.

We talk about:

  • The ways we can continue to live out our mission and vision through different roles.
  • Learning how to balance the competitiveness that comes with being an athlete and working in athletics.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports journalist Jane McManus about adapting to a changing world.

Jane is currently the Executive Director at the Center for Sports Media at Seton Hall University and a columnist for Deadspin. When Jane graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, she was able to work in the last few years of New York’s newspaper scene before journalism moved online. Jane started her career at The Journal News and later for ESPN and now Deadspin. She has covered the NFL and been an analyst for SportsCenter, The Sports Reporters, and Outside the Lines in addition to having a radio show and podcast. Throughout it all Jane has loved teaching. In the shifting landscape of sports media, Jane has been able to adapt to a changing world by drawing on her multiple identities and experiences and being deliberate when choosing her path.

Erianne is a professor at UNC Chapel Hill where her research and work focus on joining the not-all-that-different worlds of athletics and academics. A former heptathlete herself, Erianne knows what kinds of lessons student-athletes learn on the field and is shining a light on the prejudices that keep athletics out of academia. Early on in her career, Erianne tackled her fear of public speaking with the same kind of deliberate practice she had mastered as an athlete until it became one of her strengths.

We talk about:

  • How Erianne followed her passions in her career and now can look back and connect the dots in unexpected ways.
  • Erianne’s deliberate work to improve her weaknesses.

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m asking you who are you outside of your job.

Because I believe that:
1 – We should be more than our jobs, that we are more than our jobs, and our jobs don’t define us.
And...
2 – Having hobbies and a life outside of work is part of what helps us actually do better at work.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to coach and Paralympian Stephanie Wheeler about going where you’re valued.

Stephanie is the head coach of the women’s wheelchair basketball team at the University of Illinois. An alum of the program herself, winning three national championships, as well as being a two-time Paralympic gold medalist, Stephanie is no stranger to success. Despite her success, she has still faced discrimination and is one of the few women head coaches, and one of the very few head coaches with a disability, in a sports world that continues to be dominated by men. After leading Team USA to a gold medal at the Rio Paralympics as the head coach, Stephanie decided to focus all her energy on coaching her team at Illinois, where she could live out her values in an environment that supported her as a whole human being.

We talk about:

  • How you can’t do what you can’t see and Stephanie’s journey from first meeting a woman athlete with a disability as a teenager to becoming an athlete herself, and then a coach and mentor to other athletes like herself.
  • Why defining our values helps us to create identities outside of our jobs and sport.
  • Stephanie’s ongoing work to overcome internalized sexism, ableism, and homophobia and divest from the voices that don’t matter.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Assistant Professor of Athletic Training Dr. Kate Jochimsen about mentorship.

I’m especially excited to share this interview because Dr. Jochimsen is junior faculty, early in her career, but has so much wisdom and insight already. And it’s nice to hear from someone at this earlier stage as they are going through it all. Kate is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research for the Division of Athletic Training at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine. Kate was the first in her family to go to college, and then kept going - getting her Masters, PhD, and completing a post-doc, before taking her current academic position. Through all this, Kate is no stranger to the benefits of what good mentorship can do. She shares what to look for in a mentor, staying teachable, and the rewards of watching that relationship morph into collaborators.

We talk about:

  • The extra challenges faced by first-gen college students, like herself, who need to work a little harder to find out the next steps at each turn through their education.
  • Reframing choices in our careers as opportunities that are neither good or bad, but just different.
  • How being a successful academic means becoming comfortable with failure and learning to separate your worth from your work.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to athlete, author, and leadership specialist, Lisa C. Willis.

Lisa is a former basketball player, with a career spanning from UCLA to the WNBA. When an injury forced her off of the court, Lisa thought she could use her next job to replace the role of basketball in her life. She struggled through this transition before she understood that her role and identity are different. She wrote the book When the Buzzer Sounds: A guide to transition players from the court to life after sports, in order to help other athletes with this transition. Lisa also works with Nike as an apparel wear test analyst, helping to amplify the voices of athletes in the process.

We talk about:

  • How Lisa stopped minimizing her accomplishments and began applying her skills as a communicator and supportive teammate off the court.
  • How Lisa figured out that serving athletes mentally and emotionally caused the athletes to improve in all areas of their life as they learned to rely on internal rather than external sources of validation.
  • Flipping the script on imposter syndrome and using it as an opportunity to justify to ourselves exactly why we’re the right ones to be delivering our own unique message.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Associate Professor and Research Scientist Dr. Johna Register-Mihalik about how to build a peer support system because you don’t have to go it alone in your career.

Johna works at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an Associate Professor of Athletic Training and a Research Scientist studying mild traumatic brain injury. While still in undergrad, Johna cold-emailed a preeminent concussion researcher and managed to create an internship that changed the course of her career. In addition to her academic work, Johna has served on the Brain Injury Association of North Carolina’s Board and USA Baseball’s Medical and Safety Advisory Committee, as well as pursuing active professional service in national organizations like the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the American College of Sports Medicine.

We talk about:

  • The importance of getting different perspectives and why she chose to leave academia for her first job to try something new.
  • The benefit of building a peer support system of badass women and how to do it when you’re in a male-dominated field.
  • The difficulty of accepting failure and feedback while separating that from your self-worth and how you believe in yourself.

Want to grab a free exercise directly from the first module of the WCTA?

Go to MadamAthlete.com/values to download your free copy of this exercise that walks you through simple steps to help you identify and define your personal values.

Because, like we talked about on the episode, it’s important to be able to handle failures and setbacks and supportive critiques from people who matter without internalizing them to feel like you yourself are a failure just because you didn’t get the result you wanted.

And one simple step to holding on to your self-worth is making sure you’ve defined what actually matters to you and what your values are. When you know who you are and what you stand for, then it’s easier to decide if a failure or critique means something to you and if it’s an opportunity for learning and growth or negative nonsense to brush aside.

We talk about:

  • How Stephany came to recognize the burnout she was feeling in the early part of her career and the decision to go back to school to get her PhD.
  • How hard it is to break into sports and how she started her private practice to create her own space and build experience in her own way.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to physiotherapist Gráinne Donnelly about taking an unexpected career path.

Gráinne is a physiotherapist in Northern Ireland helping to change the perception of pelvic floor rehab. Initially, Gráinne planned on becoming the world’s best sports physio. But that was before she was reluctantly assigned a rotation at a maternity hospital and ended up finding her true calling in being able to serve women and their pelvic health musculoskeletal problems that were often neglected and overlooked. This unexpected career path has come full circle as Gráinne has created the first return-to-running guidelines for postpartum women and does research on keeping women active in sports. Gráinne has taken her career outside of the clinic and educates both women and health care professionals through her own podcast and online courses and speaking internationally.

We talk about:

  • How Gráinne ended up in a career field she didn’t even know existed when she started physiotherapy school.
  • The challenges of specializing early as a young woman and being taken seriously.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Stacie Grossfeld about being ready for the next challenge.

Stacie has her own orthopaedic practice in Louisville and values the independence she’s found as a surgeon employed outside of a hospital system. To keep her practice running, Stacie is continually learning new skills to stay fresh and current. She purposely avoids falling into the trap of thinking that her expertise in one field, like medicine, is enough to make her successful in another, like her businesses.

We talk about:

  • How Stacie first considered a different pathway to pursue her vision of helping people and athletes return to sport before deciding that orthopaedics was right for her.
  • How in order to create balance with whatever else was going on in her life, Stacie has created boundaries in her work but has also allowed them to change and adapt over the years.
  • The way Stacie runs multiple side businesses and attributes her success to making sure that her focus is always on the task at hand.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports sociologist Dr. Andrea Bundon about telling a story through research.

Andrea is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of British Columbia where she studies the intersections of sport, physical activity, health, disability, and social inclusion. While a grad student, she began guiding visually impaired skiers and served as a guide at the 2010 and 2014 Paralympics Games. This experience shaped her research and the rest of her career.

We talk about:

  • How Andrea quickly found that athletes with disabilities are always advocates, just by participating in sports, and that this work can take many forms.
  • While at the Paralympics, she saw fewer women than men participating and this drew attention to the loopholes and lack of pathways that keep women out of sports.
  • Identifying and working on tasks that are most important and not just focusing on tasks that are the most urgent.

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking all about how you can define success for yourself and why it's so important.

Here's the thing...

Most of us get our definitions of success from others. From society, from external expectations, from history, from a patriarchal white male, cis-gendered, hetero, ableist prism.

But what if you defined success for yourself?
Based off your own unique values, your own unique mission & vision, and your own unique goals?
What would that look like?

Listen to today's episode where I shine a light on how to define success for yourself, why it's important, how it ties into getting after your goals, and share some personal examples.

Carrie is a licensed clinical and sports psychologist who has her own private practice in addition to being the team sport psychologist for the LA Rams. Through her work, she helps athletes at all levels sharpen their mental performance skills while also evaluating their relationship with their sport. By doing what she loves, Carrie helps athletes get back to doing what it is they love.

We talk about:

  • The ways that a sports psychologist could have helped Carrie in her own athletic career and how she seeks to fill that role for current athletes.
  • How taking detours early in your career can help you define your mission and vision and provides you with skills that transfer to the next step.
  • How Carrie’s working to normalize taking care of your mental health, not just in the NFL, but in youth and high school sports as well, setting up a new generation with good habits.

As we talk about in the episode, knowing and defining your values helps you make sure your work is in alignment with your values - which means getting to do work that you love. I created a free exercise to help you identify your personal values so you can start taking ownership of your career ASAP.

Hello new or loyal fan of the podcast!

Let me start by saying thank you for listening to the 100th episode!!!

This episode is going to be real. My honest thoughts, beliefs, values. I’ll talk about what led me to start the podcast and where I want it to go in the future. And I will be talking about women’s rights so let me just say up front so there is no confusion – women’s rights are human rights. I’ll also check in on title IX, on what some past guests are up to now and share a call to action with you. This might be the most blunt and real I’ve been on the podcast so far, and you’ll hear about that and why that makes me uncomfortable. But, like I’ll talk about, it’s important. Oh, and I swear. Because I swear. So that will be happening too.

Enjoy!

Would you consider celebrating this incredible milestone by leaving an excellent rating and review on apple podcasts (where you might be listening to this episode right now?)?

And maybe share this episode with a badass women in your life who you think will benefit from being introduced to the podcast.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Olympian and coach Leah Stancil about serving your mission.

Leah is the current head coach for Tulane swimming and diving and one of just two Black woman head coaches in DI swimming. As an athlete herself, Leah competed for her home country of Barbados in two Olympics, reaching the finals in 1996. Leah always knew that she wanted to help athletes overcome their struggles and found that coaching gave her the chance to do just that while working one-on-one with swimmers on the frontlines of her sport.

We talk about:

  • How Leah realized that her impressive resume would be viewed differently if she were white or a man.
  • When Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer before her second year as head coach, she was fortunately told to focus on her health. She both relied on her husband for support and learned to delegate to her coaching staff.
  • Leah tries to recognize the “yeah, but” moments in her self-talk that keep her from appreciating her day-to-day accomplishments.

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m asking you if you're ready for change and sharing a specific framework to help you tease out where you might be getting stuck moving forward in whatever new direction you're aiming for.

Here's the thing...

Your brain doesn't actually like change.
It wants to feel pleasure, avoid pain, and keep things easy (like stuff it already knows how to do).
So change is hard!

I'm talking about Dilts' Logical Levels of Change in today's episode which is a framework for personal development (and change), that can help you identify where you need to make in order to have the biggest impact on getting after your new goal.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to cyclist and fellow podcaster Elizabeth Emery about shining a spotlight on women’s sports.

Elizabeth is the host of the podcast Hear Her Sports where she interviews women athletes and is helping to redefine and expand the coverage on women’s sports. She’s a former professional cyclist and national team member who knows firsthand the additional obstacles placed in front of women athletes. Elizabeth’s also no stranger to embracing multiple identities. In addition to being a cyclist and podcaster, she is also a multidisciplinary artist whose work has been shown in museums and galleries throughout the US.

We talk about:

  • How Elizabeth turned her favorite part of the day, commuting to work on her bike, into a professional cycling career.
  • Wondering what would have happened in her own sports journey if she had had more women role models with careers in sports.
  • Shocked by the number of her early guests who shied away from calling themselves athletes, Elizabeth has come to embrace the term and the power it provides.

She is the founding director of the Sports Equity Lab, which focuses on dismantling inequalities in sport while amplifying sport’s role as an agent for positive change.

  • How learning to direct your focus to multiple pursuits can add meaning to your work.
  • Applying skills learned through sports, like how to pivot and adapt, to everyday life.
  • Yetsa’s advice to cherish and prioritize unstructured time as a way to create a sustainable, meaningful life.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Social Justice Educator, Researcher, and Coach Dr. Jen Fry about teaching with love.

Jen has spent her entire career in higher education, transforming from a collegiate volleyball player to a coach with multiple master's degrees to an academic studying the intersection of race and athletics. Throughout her 15 years as a coach, she met her athletes with compassion and understanding while modeling what it looked like to navigate life’s challenges. She just finished her PhD in sport geography, likely making her the first Black woman sport geographer in the world.

We talk about:

  • The teachers and coaches who shaped Jen’s teaching philosophy.
  • When Jen made a career move outside of collegiate athletics, she found that so many of her skills from running a volleyball program transferred seamlessly.
  • Jen used the sum of her previous experiences to guide her research during her PhD and finish it in only three years.

At the end of the episode I shared the free resource I created to help you define your values so you can make sure that you're doing the work that matters to you, no matter what your job or job title is.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Paralympic Skier Staci Mannella about fighting injustice.

Staci is a two-time Paralympian who was born (and remains) legally blind due to achromatopsia. An avid athlete, Staci started skiing at 4 years old and was the youngest member of the 2014 Sochi Paralympic Alpine ski team at 17. Staci also took up horse racing and was a Division I equestrian athlete. Along the way, Staci had to fight for the rights and resources that most of us take for granted. Having advocated for herself and others with disabilities through the legal system, Staci is now supporting athletes with disabilities as an academic researcher.

We talk about:

  • How Staci needed time to accept that even though she didn’t achieve exactly what she wanted to athletically, that this experience opened up plenty of doors in other areas of her life.
  • Staci’s incredible legal battle for appropriate accommodations as an undergraduate.
  • Her current work as a PhD student that addresses the gaps in knowledge in the psychology and sociology of individuals and athletes with disabilities.

It is important to be proud of yourself and I'm talking about a positive pride instead of a toxic pride. And yes, I explain the difference!

The benefits of being positively proud of yourself include improved self-worth, self-respect, mood, and overall sense of well-being.

I walk through some of the reasons it's hard to learn how to be proud of yourself and share several steps you can take to get past those barriers, find your self-worth and pride, and start practicing being proud of yourself right away.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to sports medicine physician Dr. Phatho Zondi about carving your own path.

Phatho knew from a young age that her mission was to serve athletes and she’s carved out a path unlike any other. She’s worked with athletes at every level of competition and found ways to use sport as a tool for social change. She recently served as the CEO of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and, with a keen sense of who she is and her own strengths, now takes on projects as an independent consultant to promote transformation in sport science.

We talk about:

  • The barriers she faced as a young Black woman physician in South Africa that helped her realize that she could only show up as herself.
  • Phatho knew her mission was to serve athletes and their health and she’s done so at every scale, from the one-on-one level to the institutional level.
  • She advises everyone to know the difference between aligning to the expectations of others and being the author of your own story.

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Sport Psychology Professor Dr. Lindsey Blom about showing up as yourself.

Lindsey is the current president of the Association for Applied Sports Psychology (AASP) and a professor of sport and exercise psychology at Ball State University. Her work focuses on using sport for social change to promote peace at the individual, community, and international levels. From the outside, it looks like Lindsey has pursued this path with laser-sharp focus, but she always had some doubts on the inside. It wasn’t until much later on that Lindsey realized the full value of showing up as her full self in her career.

We talk about:

  • How Lindsey learned to recognize her own strengths and passions, just like she had done with students and mentees, and show up as her true self in her work.
  • How prioritizing your own self-care includes accepting when others need to prioritize their own self-care as well.
  • How Lindsey overcame the feeling that she or her research were not good enough and stopped comparing herself to others.

Rebecca’s journey has been anything but straightforward. From studying art in college before going to med school to later leaving medicine only to return after running an injury prevention business for runners, Rebecca has always chosen the path that best reflects what’s right for her at that particular moment in life.

  • How Sarah defined her values and used them to guide her through every twist and turn of her career.
  • The parallels of embracing the uncomfortable both in sports and in life to meet goals and pursue new opportunities.
  • Her focus on the process, rather than the result, led to her current role with gWell, where she can help share information on the many facets of sports medicine with a wide audience.

Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam Athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking about giving yourself permission.

The quick summary is that women are socialized to seek permission from others and to value other people's opinions more than our own. This can lead to self-doubt and guilt and anxiety and I'm not having that!

So in today's episode I talk about the useful tool of giving yourself permission. Because you are in charge of your thoughts, your decisions, and your actions. And it's time to start tuning in to your inner voice and your personal opinion of yourself.

I even created a fun little permission slip you can use to help remind yourself that you're the boss and the only authorized signature that matters is yours.

Through her work with Oiselle, Sarah is able to utilize her training in medicine and public health to support women and girls in sport at every level of competition.

  • The twists and turns of her career in sports, medicine, and public health before she found a job where she could bring it all together.

Today, I’m talking to the Portland Trail Blazers’ Senior Vice President of Innovation & Technology Christa Stout.

  • How taking advantage of every opportunity that came her way in international development, gives Christa more skills than she could ever list on a resume.
  • How taking the time to define her values and the qualities she needed in her workplace helped Christa find great jobs after business school.
  • The importance of keeping a growth mindset to continue learning the ins and outs of every task as a generalist responsible for leading specialists in their fields.

We talk about:

  • The benefits of having women mentors in the male-dominated world of orthopaedics.
  • How Jothi set up her own practice and found the autonomy within medicine that she was looking for.

We talk about:

  • The importance of having a robust network of support at every stage of life as well as that one person you can lean on to sort out life’s challenges.
  • How the athlete mentality can push people to achieve the unimaginable but also presents a challenge after the competition when the question on everyone’s mind is “what’s next?”

On today’s episode I’m talking about building self-confidence and maintaining that confidence while working in a male-dominated field and being constantly bombarded with patriarchal messaging.

Here's the crucial summary... having true self-confidence has to be internal. It depends on the thoughts you are telling yourself about yourself. It cannot depend on external validation. I talk about the mindset shift and thought work to help make it happen even in the face of constantly being told you don't belong or that you're not good enough.

This is the kind of coaching I provide in the Women's Career Transformation Academy. The next session doesn't open until May, but if you're ready to build your confidence and take ownership of your career, sign up on the waitlist so you don't miss out!

Today I’m talking to sports psychologist Lisa Lewis.

Lisa is a licensed psychologist with her own practice where she often helps athletes with complicated problems beyond their sports performance. Her mission is to help her clients uncover what motivates them, but it took her years to figure out that motivation was her focus and her mission all along.

We talk about:

  • How when things didn’t go as expected out of college, Lisa took advantage of unique opportunities which were later valued by her doctoral program.
  • How Lisa grew her sports psychology practice from something she did one night a week into her main business while still leaving plenty of time to take on other projects.
  • How she’s a self-described “decathlete in psychology,” and keeps many different irons in the fire by teaching, running continuing education classes for people in the fitness world, and consulting for a tech start-up.

On today’s episode I’m talking about how the practice of clearly articulating your values is one of the very first steps to taking ownership of your career. Carla is the Director of Sports Medicine at Georgia Tech, where she has spent her entire career starting out as an athletic trainer. While it might seem like a straight shot from athletic trainer to her current role, Carla didn’t always see herself working in the world of athletics in the first place. She graduated college with a degree in business but began working as a student athletic trainer and fell in love with serving student-athletes in a role where she could have a huge impact. Over the years, Carla’s found that she uses her business skills to manage both the student-athlete experience and the business side of sports medicine.

On this episode I’m talking to Carole Oglesby, Marjorie Snyder, and Deborah Slaner Larkin, the creators of the Oglesby-Snyder Grant for Equity and Cultural Diversity through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Carole, Marj, and Deborah have been leaders in women’s sports for decades, with careers stretching from academia to advocacy to C-Suite positions. They’ve helped change the perception of women in sports by conducting and sourcing compelling research and using that data to tell the story. Their research and advocacy showed that women and girls were just as interested in sports and helped drive changes at all levels of participation. This new grant, named for Carole and Marj and brought to life by Deborah, seeks to fund researchers and their work on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

We talk about:

  • The progress made for women in sports and the obstacles we still face
  • Being brave and getting out of your comfort zone
  • Building support networks

Today’s a little bit of a special episode for me and I’m excited to end the year on this personal note. Coach Stuckel is the head women’s lacrosse coach at Muhlenberg College, and she was my coach! I was a freshman at Muhlenberg during her first year there and she recruited me as a walk-on who had never played before in order to be able to field a varsity team. Don’t worry, we go into that story in the episode! I have personally learned so much from Coach (and you’ll see, I have a near inability to call her by her first name!), and being able to interview her for this podcast has only made me realize how much more I learned from her than I even realized. She really did inspire me and set an example of what it means to be a strong, competent, and capable woman leader who cares about the young women she works with. Ok, back to her history… while Kristen was a two-sport athlete in college, she didn’t graduate with plans to coach professionally. Instead, she made the leap to coaching a few years after college when she was recruited by her coach and mentor, and she never looked back. As a coach, Kristen makes sure that her athletes learn how to grow and adapt on and off the field.

We talk about:

  • Helping women to excel in their lives beyond sports
  • Exploring all parts of the job early in your career
  • Staying in touch with your mentors

Erin tested and loved many different aspects of psychology before finding her home in sports psych. She shares how that training gives her the tools and perspective to meet her athletes where they're at to treat the whole person.

On today’s episode I’m talking about all things self-promotion. Ok, wait! Before you give up on this episode because you think bragging is gross or it makes you uncomfortable… give me a chance and I promise it will be worth it! The thing is, we have to be our own best self-advocates. Bosses are busy, colleagues are busy, teams are all flickering on the edge of burnout. It’d be nice to think that if you put your head down and got the work done and did good work, that people will notice. That you’ll be recognized and rewarded. But you know I always keep it real with you and that’s just not how life works. You’re out there doing amazing things and you deserve to be noticed and recognized. So in this episode I’m going to give you the secrets to graceful self-promotion. I’m talking about the art of promoting yourself that doesn’t make you feel like a jerk or a slimy salesperson. And that gives you tools to avoid the double bind women who self-promote can find themselves in.

And, to help you practice, I created a free download with all of these tips (and maybe a few extra 😉)!

Today I’m talking to Olympic rowers Kristi Wagner and Dr. Gevvie Stone.

Kristi and Gevvie are US national team rowers who teamed up to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the double sculls. While they found themselves lining up against the best in the world this past summer, neither one initially had their sights set on the Olympics back when they finished their collegiate rowing careers. Instead, Kristi’s path involved navigating injury, expectations, and the pandemic to make her first Olympic team. And Gevvie balanced full-time rowing with her medical training for years, taking time away from medical school and residency to make three Olympic teams and win silver at the 2016 Rio Games. Both women use the lessons of perseverance that rowing taught them in order to inspire others, both in and out of the sport.

We talk about:

  • Putting your career on hold to pursue a dream
  • Being driven by a love of the sport
  • Jumping in before you feel like you’re ready

Today I’m talking to the founder of Native Women Running Verna Volker.

Verna is an ultra runner and member of the Navajo nation who created Native Women Running to share and celebrate the stories of Indigenous women runners. A mother of four and a second-grade teacher, Verna first began running over ten years ago as a way to get in shape after moving to a new city. When she started sharing her progress through social media, Verna saw an online running community that failed to look like her or the other women she knew. Verna began amplifying the voices of other Indigenous women, and this grew into Native Women Running. Verna has kept building this platform, reaching recognition in the larger running community, and continues to push herself on the trail, recently completing her first 100k race this fall.

We talk about:

  • Stepping outside of your comfort zone
  • Prioritizing rest
  • Surprising yourself

Today I’m talking to Avery Niemann and Heidi Hendrick, the founders of Peak Pentathlon.

Avery and Heidi are two world-class pentathletes on a mission to create a team that puts athletes first. While both women swam in college, their journeys to the sport of pentathlon, as well as their careers, were anything but straightforward. Their idea for an athlete-focused training group was born at a training camp when Avery and Heidi saw a need and decided to start building a community. Over the past few years, they’ve grown and expanded Peak Pentathlon and aim to raise the profile of American pentathletes on the international stage. These women train for not one but five sports, and, as you’ll hear, wear a lot of hats in their organization as well.

We talk about:

  • Going all-in on a new endeavor
  • Overcoming the fear of starting

On today’s episode I’m talking about all things accountability. Being accountable is a personal decision and it’s a personal way of being. Taking responsibility for your actions is important, but it can also be a tricky spot for women in particular, and I’ll get into that balancing act. Also, we often talk about “being held accountable” or holding other people accountable, but truly, you can’t force other people to be willing to accept responsibility for their actions. You can set a strong example and create a culture that embraces personal accountability, and I go into the details on how to do to that during this episode. And lastly, I’ll talk about finding and using an accountability partner to help you get after your goals.

Rathna is the founder and owner of her own sports medicine practice. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be a doctor but never anticipated that she would be an entrepreneur and start her own practice. Welcome back to another special episode of the Madam athlete podcast! On the second Tuesday of the month, I take a deep dive into a career-related topic, and on today’s episode I’m talking about the comparison game. Only, it’s not really a game, because it’s not fun and there is not a lot of winning if you’re playing. The idea for today’s episode came about when several of the women in my Women’s Career Transformation Academy brought up their struggles with comparison. That they struggle with comparing themselves to other women they feel are further along in their career. That they are in fact comparing themselves to these other women constantly and always feeling like they come up short. And it’s miserable! So, on today’s episode, I’ll be sharing what science tells us about comparing ourselves to others and what you can do to stop engaging in the comparison game and to take back your confidence.

It's the second Tuesday of the month so I'm taking a deep dive into setting boundaries.

We know that blurred boundaries or poor boundaries, particularly between work- and home-life, are linked to an unhealthier lifestyle, decreased happiness, increased resentment, anger, and burnout. And we also know that healthy boundaries lead to a sense of empowerment at work.

So today I'm talking about what boundaries even are, why they're important, the different types of boundaries, how to figure out your boundaries, and how to communicate your boundaries.

The Madam Athlete podcast has turned 50!
50 episodes that is :)

On today's episode I'm taking you behind the scenes of Madam Athlete. What I've been up to, what took me so long to get started, and what I'm trying next...

And since a lot of the answer to "what took me so long" is Perfectionism, that's where I'm starting off this new episode type - where once a month, I'll be talking to you directly and taking a deeper dive into one of the many topics that come up over and over again with my guests and their careers.

I'm starting with Perfectionism today, and how setting unrealistic goals that you can't meet can cause you to doubt yourself, and then lose faith in yourself, and combining that with a lack of self-compassion, can be a vicious cycle of disappointment. And while some of us used perfectionism to get ahead in our careers, over time, it's a set up for failure and the fear of failure can stop you in your tracks.

I share one of my tips for breaking free from that vicious cycle, and if you'd like a couple more, I created a free download with my top three favorite tips to fighting off perfectionism so you can move forward with that project, that new venture, and your life.

Download your free copy and you can use emergency hack #1 right away to start making forward progress today.

She continued to train, and unfortunately suffered a pelvic fracture that put her on the sidelines for a long time considering her future. On today’s episode, I’m talking with Emily Jaenson, the General Manager of the Reno Aces, a AAA Minor League Baseball team associated with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

When Emily was hired as the Aces’ GM, she was the first woman GM in Minor League Baseball in 20 years. It’s a fitting position for a woman who first learned how to score baseball games at 5 years old with her mom. Like most of our guests, Emily did not have a straight-line journey in sports to get to her current position. She started off thinking she’d go into athletic training and then pivoted into marketing. Her first job was in ticket sales with the Chicago Bulls. And through several twists and turns, including leaving sports for the non-profit world, she continued to learn and grow along the way, and consistently worked to be so good that no one could forget her. That work paid off and ultimately earned her the GM position. And now she’s using her position to help support other women in sports through her podcast and her work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in baseball.

We talk about:

  • Being the storyteller of your own journey
  • Choosing opportunity and growth instead of comfort
  • How having it all is possible because it is also self-determined

For the last episode of 2020, I wanted to bring you a special mini-episode to finish off the year and help you get ready for 2021.

This is a little bonus gift from me to you, with another bonus gift attached as well :)

Did you know research has shown that people who set goals and work towards them lead happier and more satisfying lives? And that having an effective goal can increase your productivity even if you don't actually complete or reach your goal? Or how about the fact that writing a goal down makes you 30% more likely to achieve your goal. Did you know that?

But here's the catch. Setting the wrong kind of goal means you might not see any progress at all. Or worse, setting the wrong type of goal that you can't or don't effectively work towards, can actually make you more miserable.

So it's important to do this right!

In today's episode I talk about the importance of setting goals and share a little bit of my own experience with setting goals to help me move my career and personal life forward.

I'm specifically focusing on the prep work that needs to happen before you're even able to work on crafting an effective goal.

Finally, as my second bonus gift to you, I share a little information about a free email course I created that helps walk you through the process of creating an effective goal that will set you up for success.

So take a listen to today's episode and then sign up for the free 3-day email challenge to help you kick off 2021 with a killer plan!

Happy New Year!!
