As a survivor of molestation, you have to understand that if you're not stating it's wrong, then why would somebody stop? In your silence, predators prey. So by owning you were violated, you can call out your violator and let go the chains of shame. So break those chains and step into your light.

In this episode of The 411 Live, Michael Mannan, the Director of Home Environmental Health with the City of Milwaukee Health Department, speaks about lead poisoning, a problem that has been around for decades and continues to affect large urban cities. Lead paint, which was first used in buildings in the 1920s and wasn't removed until 1978, still exists in over 250,000 units, according to Mannan’s estimate.
He believes the actual number may be even higher, as some buildings are apartment complexes and may have multiple units. The hazards of lead paint are apparent when maintenance is delayed and the surfaces begin to deteriorate and create chip or dust. Lead can also be found in water and soil.
The discussion sheds light on the barriers to solving this problem and the efforts being made to minimize the impact on our children's health.

Beverly Taylor speaks with filmmaker and former TV journalist Joanne Williams talk about her journey after making the film, “The Exchange In White America” Kaukauna & King 50 Years Later. This film revisits the historic exchange between two very different schools of Wisconsin, Rufus King High School in Milwaukee and Kaukauna High School in the Fox River Valley.
One white school and one black school collaborated in a controversial play production in 1966 and now will revive the play 50 years later with a new generation of high school students in the same schools and communities. This journey was very personal for Joanne but she found a story bigger than her own.

Violence can be defined as the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation. She felt her life's purpose was to share her story of becoming a black, female triathlete after browsing far across the internet and noticing there was barely, if not zero, children's books about black girls doing such things like swimming, biking, or skiing. The U.S. Constitution says that every person must have an equal vote in Congressional elections, but Wisconsin's legislative map isn't being fair. Wisconsin's voting districts are drawn so that they're "safe" for either Republicans or Democrats. In this episode of The 411 Live, Beverly Taylor addresses the demographic disparities that exist in those who are sentenced to incarceration and those given probation with Dr. Tina Freiburger, Dean of the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Young black men are more likely to be incarcerated than sentenced to probation than any other gender, race or ethic group. Dr. Freiburger spends this episode revealing research she uncovered about the considerations of the judges who render the sentences and the unconscious rules at work in the judicial system. “In order for us to change [the rules] and do something about them, we first have to identify them and know they exist.” Find out exactly what knowledge the average population is missing about the rules on punishment in our judicial system.

In this episode, Beverly Taylor dives into the story behind the controversy surrounding a social media post by Milwaukee Lutheran High School. She chats with Milwaukee Lutheran Alumni Carl Greer, Karon Sims, and Monte Berry who describe racism they say they endured at the school. Not only do these alumni share similar stories, but they come together to make the community aware of what they call a misleading post from Milwaukee Lutheran. Obtaining the spotlight for their accusations, the men received a lot of positive and negative feedback as well as an opportunity to seek change within the school walls. Carl Greer tells us, “You can get in front of the situation and really start to make change within organizations because change is coming whether you like it or not. Be a leader and stand up and start to make a difference.”

In this episode we are joined by Teresa Cocker, Chief Program Officer of Norris Inc, and Karen Schlindwein, Vice President of Education and Development of Chosen, Inc. The need for foster parents continue to rise while more children are coming into foster care. The issue of lack of foster homes goes much deeper than just a lack of interest. Beverly Taylor chats with Teresa Cocker and Karen Schlindwein about the foster care system in SE Wisconsin. Karen Schlindwein says, “The system in and of itself is something that people just tend to hear so many poor and negative things, and it’s not the perfect system. There is no perfect system.” Astonishingly, eight thousand children are currently in the state’s foster care system with 100 children entering it each month in Milwaukee County! The number of reported cases have gone down during the pandemic, but Cocker and Schlindwein say that’s because mandatory reporters, such as school teachers are not seeing the children on a regular basis because of no or limited in-person schooling due to the pandemic. They expect the numbers to greatly increase once schools are open and evidence of neglect and abuse is seen. While recruitment efforts have evolved to fit the times, correcting an overwhelmed system will take much more than a digital influence and a new pitch. Teresa says, “Foster parents are like all of us. They can be single, they can be married, they can be partnered. They can rent, they can own. It’s really about having the space in your home and in your heart.” Join us as we talk about the shortage in foster care, some of the myths and misperceptions and how you can become a foster parent. You will get a good picture of what it takes to become a foster parent and the resources available to walk them through the process. As a matter of fact, you may be just what a foster child needs.
In this episode we are joined by Nancy H. Stone M.S. LCP, a professional therapist with Jewish Family Services. With October being Domestic Violence Awareness month, Nancy Stone provides insight on how to detect a violence that is “hidden in plain sight” with details on how it begins, where it goes south, and when it gets dangerous. Beverly Taylor zeroes in on a commonly asked question: why doesn’t the victim leave the abuser? Stone invites listeners to ponder that, “an abuser is not abusive 100% of the time.” Stone puts the truth in our face with statistics on the prevalence of domestic violence around us and the effect it has on families and economies. She also provides insight about the different forms of abuse and the best methods of helping someone through them. “In a rational relationship, problems have solutions, but in an abusive relationship, solutions become problems.” After listening to this episode, you will realize a family member, friend or coworker may be suffering from domestic violence right under your nose.

Moira Kelly is an arbitrator, mediator and negotiator as well as an expert on alternative dispute resolutions, who founded Kelly Consulting LLC located in New Berlin. Kelly Consulting LLC focuses on consulting and training in dispute resolution, labor relations and organizational effectiveness. Moira Kelly is also the author of How To Cost a Labor Contract and co-authored sections on grievance mediations and workplace conflict in Alternative Dispute Resolution by Jay E. Grenig. One moment in the interview, Moira Kelly states, “Why can’t we just get to world peace? Well, because some people don’t want the fighting to stop.” Some people are ready to come to an agreement, and some people need a few more arguments in. They bring to light what works and what doesn’t for people who have a one track mind on what they want. Kelly also reveals that there are different types of listeners. She introduces a spectrum of methods to understand one another from different internal places. Moira Kelly highlights, “We like to hear things the way we like to hear things. There are four different ways of preferring how you listen, and these are listening styles,” and as Beverly Taylor learns these styles with her listeners, she is quick to pick up that, “knowing them can help you, otherwise people can walk away with hurt feelings.” Join us as we talk about how to recognize and mediate some of the disputes in our lives with Moira Kelly.

African Americans appear to have worse outcomes from the corona-virus in April of 2020. Why were African Americans hit so hard by this virus? The majority of the cases in the City of Milwaukee were on the north side of town, primarily African-Americans. Local officials were scrambling to respond to the outbreak disproportionately affecting the black community. The revolving cycle of prostitution, arrests, jail, and release does not solve the problem in the long-term because it does not address the underlying needs of the women forced into the sex trade. We talk about how to approach and care for the victims of sex trafficking when you are caring for them medical field. Dr. Rabbitt said, "In emergency departments, urgent care centers, reproductive health care centers and other places like that, we found that less than half were able to identify someone as a trafficking victim." When it comes to advancement, the medical world is always trying to do better. Not just for the physical but mental and spiritual too.
Dr Ehrman goes on to say, "All medical personnel including the person who checks somebody in. The front desk should know the warning signs, not just the doctors and the nurses and the PAs, but everybody who works in the medical field should have some idea of what to look for even paramedics and EMS first responders." No matter what, it needs to be something we talk about.
We break down and look at the different levels of trauma and the way it can manifest itself. Even uprising from a time victims didn’t even know that they were experiencing trauma.
Dr. Smith goes on to explain the difference between physical and mental trauma and how these things can affect everyone differently. Jolanda also explains the different triggers victims may have. She states, “Even with family and friends having the best intentions when helping a victim, it can be simple things that trigger their traumatic experience.”

In this episode of The 411 Live, we interview Dr. Kweku Akyirefi Ramel Smith from Blacksmith Consulting and Jolanda Rodgers, founder of Talk Consulting about how traffickers use a victim’s trauma to lure them into sex trafficking.
We begin with Jolanda introducing the “I Dare You to Heal” movement and all that entails with it as Dr. Smith goes on to explain what trauma is and how Traffickers use it. Dr. Smith uses the example of molesters and pedophiles and the trauma they bring to their victims. He leads into how traffickers will then use that trauma as a weapon or a tool on their victims. Jolanda chimes in as well and helps explain how the history of trauma can affect people long into their adult hood. She explains how something may have happened to you when you were four and can come back and haunt you when you have a four-year-old of your own and the resemblance of age can snap the bad memory right back into your mind.
Dr. Smith and Jolanda both agree that trauma is something we have to take very serious and talk about. Trauma is a scary tool that can affect the young and old and traffickers know this. Burying it deep and not talking about it won’t help.

In this episode, we discuss what pimping was compared to what it is now. Lamarr Love goes on to express how it was a lot more voluntary back in the day. He says that in the sixties and seventies, there was much more of a better understanding within the sex trade. Whether right or wrong, he says people chose to be a part of the sex trade. A lot of times more than not it was out of necessity. Whether that be paying bills, taking care of family, etc. According to Lamarr Love, the situation now is a complete 180 compared to how things were ran in the past.

In this episode of The 411 Live, Beverly Taylor talks to Lamar Love, an ex pimp and now Executive Director of Vessels of God.
We discuss the life of a pimp, the trend of what it was back in the 70s, and how one gets to such a life style. Lamar Love was willing to be very open about his experience in this life style and how his upbringing lead him down this direction.
Remembering his life as a child, he recalls seeing the Johns coming to his neighborhood where they would find little resistance given the fact they were bringing money to the area. He goes on to say, “You know, at the end. It wasn't so much a criminal act. It was a matter of survival. This was something that was necessary or a welcomed circumstance which allowed us to survive, to allow us to live.”. Lamar Love dives in even deeper to what seems to have been the origin of what he part took in with the sex trade world.

Lisa continues her story, giving detailed account of how her son’s experience impacted her and the family. The misunderstandings they had with the situation and the trauma they experienced with it. Lisa goes on to say, “Yeah. And I kind of compared it a lot to, I'm having a newborn baby at home again. We did not trust him anymore, um, after all the runaways and all the drug use and everything."
Dr. Debbie Lassiter goes on to explain the family’s side of sex trafficking and what it does over time.
