Alex Hormozi recently did a podcast title "What it really takes to grow your business" and in this episode he talks about the ever famous "Lady in the Red Dress" otherwise known as a distraction. This particular episode caused me to reflect on 3 things that I've done to screw myself in business over the last decade. I go into detail into what I did, why I thought it was a great idea, and the long term effects of pursing this distracting idea.

I took a business that was working and making money and used that money to try and start things that failed time and time again. I thought because I was successful at one thing, I would instantly be successful at anything and the part I kept forgetting was the amount of time it took to finally become successful at the first thing. I hope you can learn from my mistakes and at the same time enjoy the life experience behind them :)

This podcast explores the origins and interesting facts surrounding the popular board game, Monopoly. The game's origin story dates back to 1903 when an American anti-monopolist named Elizabeth Magie created a board game called The Landlord's Game. It was a hit, and in 1935, Charles Darrow sold the patent to the Parker Brothers, who then paid Magie for her patent. Monopoly has since become a family classic, and millions of dollars of Monopoly money are printed every year. The podcast also highlights Monopoly's role in World War II and its use by British soldiers to plan escapes from German prisoner of war camps. Finally, it discusses the many record-breaking feats achieved while playing Monopoly, including the longest games played in unusual places, such as underwater, in a treehouse, or upside down.

If I see another “Now Hiring” sign, or better yet, a sign that says expect bad service because we are short staffed at a restaurant, I’m going to lose my mind. The world is different today, and there is no denying it. I’m pretty sure this statement officially makes me somewhat old. But I remember the days when getting a job was a big deal, because so many people applied for that job. Today people treat applying for jobs like online dating… They “apply” for everything, and even if they find a job, they keep looking for a different one and will jump ship faster than any other time in history. The interview process is so bad for us at my poster company, that the first question we have to ask people during an interview is: “Do you know what job you’re interviewing for?”

The podcast talks about the history of sodas, which were originally developed as medicine in the 1800s. The oldest carbonated soft drink company in American history, Dr Pepper, got its start in 1885 at a pharmacy in Waco, Texas. The drink was created by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton, who developed a syrup that he could add to the soda fountain, and it was sold as a tonic that could help cure stomach ailments and pains and increase vitality and vigor. The soda was a hit and became a huge success, especially after being introduced at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. There are different stories about how Dr Pepper got its name, including one that involves a man dedicating the drink to the father of the girl he was trying to marry.

Amazon started with books and CDs.

Facebook and Google started in a dorm room.

Airbnb started with air mattresses on a terrible website.

UTP started out of the trunk of a car as a side business while waiting tables.

So many people want the "get rich quick" life. For every newsworthy business, there are hundreds of young entrepreneurs thinking about giving up. Don't let that be you.

Where are you starting? If this is your second or third company, you know already know what it takes to start small and grow.

Is this your first business? The only resource you may have is time, energy, and a network of supporters. And that's okay.

Somewhere in a business plan or a spreadsheet, you've mapped out what the next three to five years look like, and that's good. I bet it's much bigger than today.

Some businesses began with a seed round or patiently saved cash cautiously invested. Whatever your situation is, the company you own today won't be a fraction of its size in the next few years.

And we're not just talking cash flow.

How to measure the size of your businessWhen you own a business, you invest time, money, and energy to get market share, growth, and profit (among other things.)

Time is finite - you only get 24 hours in a day. Where will you spend them?

Money burns fast - where are you going to invest it? And, what are you doing with the returns?

Energy is everything - the mental burden and physical exhaustion of events, clients, vendors, employees, finances, legal matters, customer service, marketing, strategy... and everything else you put into your business can be taxing if you don't know how to prioritize and execute.

Let's think about the extreme for a moment. What would happen if you never showed up at your small business ever again?

What would happen? Are you getting apprehensive?

Maybe less extreme - what if you had 1 hour a week that you checked in with your team - it was a power-problem solving event. When you were done, you went back to the other 39 Hours of the week.

What would happen? Sounds odd, right?

Most people think of failure as not making lots of money, but the reality is that failure means something different to each individual.

For me, failure is having a 9 to 5 job because it means I’m sacrificing my freedom. As long as I’m able to pay the bills while maintaining my freedom to be able to go where I want and work when I want, I’m living a successful life.

For others though, failure may be losing that 9 to 5 job, because success for them is stability.

Strong WordsThese are some compelling words from a very successful investor, and his advice has proven to be true in a variety of circumstances.

For me personally, while other businesses were being shut down due to the pandemic, mine blossomed because I wasn’t afraid to take advantage of the online market while others were afraid to make a move.

My business is based online, and more and more people are finding me there as they switch to a more remote lifestyle....

"Remember, despite all current events, there is no crying in baseball." - Tom Hanks

Today we discuss the Coronavirus, how it affects our businesses, and what small businesses can do to hunker down and come out on top. Obviously, this is a difficult time for many people. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our United States Economy. With forced quarantines and entire states shutting down portions of the economy, we understand the impact. Our companies are no different.

  • We think this is the perfect time to play catch up on all of the things you've been putting off in your business.
  • If you can buy from other small businesses, vendors, contractors, a micro-business, keeping the small businesses going is so important.
  • Now is when loyalty matters most. As a business owner, if you can extend every possible opportunity to your employees, they won't forget it. Likewise, your partners, clients, and managers need loyalty right now more than ever.
  • Reevaluate debt, subscription services to non-essential services, and audit your business and personal bank statements.
