Paula Luu, a photographer, shares her journey of scaling her business and finding success. She started her photography career in 2006 in Waco, Texas, where her husband gave her a camera, and she began taking pictures of people for album covers and headshots. Eventually, she moved to Houston, Texas, to pursue photography full-time.
In October/November 2021, she joined Mastermind, a business coaching program, and by February 2022, she and her husband had sold out 40 sessions in less than 48 hours, earning $188,000 with an average session price of $3,000. They credit their success to networking, building relationships with clients, and implementing the information they learned in Mastermind.
The campaign that helped them achieve their success is the 40 Over 40 campaign. This campaign is aimed at empowering 40 women over 40 to embrace their beauty and have a positive body image. They structured the pricing to include hair and makeup artists, three looks, a meet and greet with Chloe, a guaranteed "it shot" for each participant, a magazine featuring their bio and testimonials, and a champagne party.
The magazine they produce for the campaign costs them a bit over a thousand dollars for the printout. However, they are planning an upsell for a bigger magazine or a framed photograph with the woman as the cover for an extra cost. They also found the venue for the champagne party through networking and are not selling tickets but instead inviting the forty women to bring a friend.
Paula has plans to hire two more full-time employees and currently has an in-house retoucher and social media manager who help her with her work. She also sent a referral to another photographer for a wedding event. Her advice for people looking to make major changes is to be patient and consistent, trust the system, and don't be scared to jump.
In summary, Paula's journey shows the importance of networking, building relationships with clients, and implementing the knowledge gained from The High Rollers Club Mastermind. Her 40 Over 40 campaign is a successful example of how empowering women and providing value can generate income for a photography business.

Having been brought up in photography, and from a very young age been involved with running photographic organizations, Colin Jones has a unique perspective and large knowledge of the photographic industry, with particular emphasis on the trade side of the industry.
As CEO for The Societies of Photographers, Colin’s role is to oversee the day-to-day running of the organization from membership recruitment, renewals, expanding, and updating the benefits of membership, London Photo Convention Organizer, heading up the Roadshows team, providing content and part-designing the magazine Professional Image maker, website design, and content creation, as well as business development.

This week we sat down with Nino Batista, a model photographer whose work has been published in lifestyle and men's publications all over the world. In this video, he introduces his frequency plugin which gives portraits more texture.
His advice for retouching photos is to know when to stop and to not get stuck in details. Batista suggests that if you are starting your photography business, you should pay models to work with you because it is a good investment and offers good training for you.

Join us in this week's interview with Jessica Rae and Aroha McKaig for firsthand insight into how photographing boudoir is about telling a story and letting people know that they can embrace their sexuality without feeling ashamed of it. They have thorough conversations with their clients to get to know what they want out of these photos and always try to make clients feel comfortable in their studio space. They always push themselves in order to come up with new creative ideas for their shoots, and like to change studio spaces, travel, and see what other photographers in their industry are doing. Incorporating sexuality into their photographs requires them to understand what the clients limits are and make them feel comfortable in the shoot. When it comes to shooting erotica, they bring in someone who is comfortable doing it and find out what poses to shoot them in.
Vulnerability is a big factor in their photography because their photos are all about storytelling. They like to talk with their clients and relate to them before taking their photos. Since many of these clients are taking these pictures in order to free themselves of a trauma or negative experience, they always try to make sure that the client comes out of the photo session feeling less damaged than they came in.
