This week's guest is the former John's Hopkins University Coach Dave Pietramala. This episode was recorded in 2018, but it's still a valuable episode for any player or coach.
Coach Pietramala started playing lacrosse as a 7th grader in Hicksville, NY. From there he went on to have one of the most successful playing careers ever. Widely regarded as the best defenseman of all time, Coach Pietramala has also found success on the sideline as the coach of his Alma Mater, John's Hopkins, leading them to National Championships in 2005 and 2007.
In this episode, we discuss how he first fell in love with the sport, his struggles as a freshman student-athlete at Hopkins, the importance of playing multiple sports and multiple positions for young athletes, simulating game-like situations in practice, and teaching "winning and losing in life skills" and not just lacrosse skills.
Today on the show we got a chance to talk to Marcus about his time as a young player in high school, his time at UNC, how he mentally prepares for games, and much more.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Princeton Men’s Lacrosse, Matt Madalon.
Coach Madalon is a Roanoke College graduate where he was a DIII All-American Goalie. He spent 7 seasons as the offensive coordinator and goalie coach at Stevens. During his time there he was named DIII Assistant Coach of the Year. He then moved on to be the assistant coach at Princeton before becoming the interim head coach, and then finally being named the head coach at Princeton University.
Coach Madalon and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like learning to communicate, examples of senior leadership, a culture of extras, their underlying philosophy, and much more.
