In this podcast I answer the question, “Why do women want to fix their diabetes without medications?” Women think it’s about getting a normal A1C or reducing meds, but there’s more to it. How do you feel when your blood sugar is high, or when you need more meds? Women often tell me they feel guilt, shame, and out of control. But normal blood sugars aren’t just about numbers. It’s about regaining control, confidence, and being at peace with your health and food choices. This journey helps you break free from cravings and live life on your terms—proud, healthy, and empowered. This episode tells you how!
This episode focuses on identifying what drives you to improve your diabetes and why it's so important to you. Fixing your diabetes requires time and effort, but you need to ask yourself, "Why do I want this?" We discuss obstacles like discomfort, excuses, and negative thoughts that keep you from your health goals. Your brain may offer partial truths, but real change comes from overcoming these barriers and making better choices. The key is to anchor to who you are and why you want better blood sugars—your health, vitality, and the life you want. I teach you one simple question to ask yourself, "What do I know for sure?" to guide all your decisions.
This episode focuses on how our thoughts directly impact actions and results, particularly for those dealing with diabetes, prediabetes, or challenges with weight loss. It explains how negative thoughts about eating to reverse your diabetes or improve your blood sugars can sabotage health goals. Women struggle with cravings and unhealthy food choices, but it’s the way you think about food that keeps you stuck and sick. By challenging those automatic thoughts, especially around unhealthy eating habits, women with diabetes can gain control over their health. The key to reversing diabetes is to understand and manage your mind, allowing cravings to pass, and managing healthier thought patterns.
In this episode, we explore the crucial connection between sleep and diabetes management. We'll clear up common misconceptions about sleep, discuss its impact on insulin resistance, and share practical tips to enhance sleep quality. Drawing on the work of top sleep scientists like Dr. Matt Walker and Dr. Satchidananda Panda, we’ll break down how sleep cycles work and why at least seven hours of sleep is essential. We’ll also cover how poor sleep leads to bad food choices and increases health risks. Plus, we'll discuss the effects of sleep aids, caffeine, and alcohol on your sleep cycles and overall health.
This episode is a conversation between me and trauma therapist, Eva Whitmer, LPC. We discuss the Polyvagal Theory, the Window of Tolerance, and a strategy for determining why you emotionally eat. Eva also uses a great analogy for explaining why managing stress is so important if you are going to fix your diabetes and start seeing better blood sugars! Check the podcast out and let me know what you think!
This episode reviews the 14-day guide, along with tips on adjusting the meals in the guide and where to find additional resources for fasting, exercise, meditation, and sleep to support your journey to better health. This episode also dives into why planning is key to managing type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Unlike typical diet programs, making and implementing a plan works on re-wiring the brain. Making decisions from the prefrontal cortex, which prioritizes long-term health goals over immediate gratification. The episode highlights the importance of using a plan to avoid allowing your primitive brain to make decisions that will derail your progress. Check it out! Tell me what you think!
This episode discusses the concept of "buffering," where women use food or other activities to avoid negative emotions or situations. If you have type 2 diabetes, this often means eating unhealthy foods when feeling stressed or overwhelmed, leading to insulin resistance and a sense of being out of control. The episode differentiates between "true" pleasures, like spending time with loved ones, which bring slow, long-lasting joy, and "artificial" pleasures, like processed foods or social media, which offer quick but temporary satisfaction and often lead to negative consequences. Understanding and managing these behaviors is key to better health.
In this podcast episode, we explore the impact of stress on insulin resistance and diabetes. While diet and exercise are crucial for managing blood sugar, stress plays a significant role too. Stress can lead to insulin resistance by affecting beta cell function, lipid metabolism, inflammation, and the autonomic nervous system. High stress levels increase cortisol and disrupt the balance of our fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest systems. Managing stress through deep breathing, meditation, exercise, and other techniques can help reduce its negative effects. Learning to control stress and rewire our thoughts can significantly improve long-term health outcomes. Check it out. Let me know what you think!
In this episode, I focus on managing a healthy vacation effectively. I emphasize the importance of envisioning what a naturally healthy vacation means to you and then I dive into tools to use for a healthy vacation. I discuss planning as the foundation. Tools for achieving a healthy vacation include fasting, exercise, low carb/keto diets, stress management, adequate sleep, and how apple cider vinegar and lemon water can help. This podcast stresses making deliberate choices and staying in control, especially when faced with unfamiliar food choices while traveling. It encourages mindful eating and staying calm to maintain control over blood sugar levels and overall health during vacations.
In this episode, I explore food additives and their health implications, especially for women improving their blood sugars and health. While cutting out processed foods can normalize blood sugars, issues like IBS, GERD, autoimmune symptoms, and mood disorders might be better served by focusing on food additives. Food additives are used to enhance taste, texture, and shelf life but can harm gut microbiome, cause inflammation, and trigger immune responses. I discuss various harmful additives, their effects, and associated diseases like IBS, Crohn's, and mood disorders. I include a list of further readings to deepen your understanding of the effect the food you eat has on your biology.
In this episode, I address common exercise-related questions. I recap how exercise improves blood sugar by burning glucose through non-insulin dependent pathways and how building muscle helps you manage blood sugars. I’ll answer questions about HIIT, carb recommendations during exercise (30-60 grams per hour of cardio), and metformin’s effect on mitochondria. I’ll also discuss daily protein intake and its role in muscle recovery. Additionally, I’ll share motivational tips for overcoming mental barriers to exercise, emphasizing the importance of accepting challenges as part of the process.
In this episode, I focus on the importance of building muscle over cardio for managing type 2 diabetes. I discuss switching from exercising to be thin to exercising with a focus on overall health and body composition. Remember if you have complications with your diabetes complications, get cleared by your doctor. I review how strenuous exercise benefits insulin resistance and blood sugars. I review and critique various exercise recommendations from the ADA, AHA, and others. Key strategies include incorporating regular aerobic and resistance exercises, aiming for 420 minutes of activity weekly, and focusing on functional exercises that enhance daily life capabilities. Diabetes involves high blood sugar levels caused by insulin resistance. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps cells absorb glucose for energy. Overexposure to insulin makes cells resistant, preventing glucose from entering and causing high blood sugar. Carbohydrates like flour, sugars, and bread increase blood sugar. To address diabetes, insulin resistance must be tackled. Exercise is a key tool for this, as muscle contractions enable glucose absorption without insulin, lowering blood sugar and reducing insulin production. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for overall health. Start with simple exercises like walking, sit-to-stand, and wall push-ups, gradually increasing to 210 minutes per week.
In this episode, we explore the misconception that genes are the driving force for disease in the human body. When initial attempts to control A1c’s fail, women wonder, “maybe my genes are stacked against me.” And the “healthcare” system encourages this. Providers start to push medications. In fact, many providers think using meds is the only way to get healthy. News flash: diabetes is not caused by a lack of medication. True health is the absence of disease, and requires eliminating the cause of your disease. In the case of your blood sugars, this means eliminating the foods causing your insulin resistance. Medications manage but do not cure the disease. Healing involves a consistent diet, free from processed foods. Check out this episode to learn more!
Insulin resistance in the liver leads to many different diseases. Inflammation and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Abnormal protein synthesis and hormonal dysregulation and immune dysregulation. All are caused by the impact of insulin resistance on the liver. Most women have not heard about this aspect of insulin resistance because we do not have medications to treat the symptoms. This episode reviews the tip of the iceberg for how far-reaching insulin resistance impacts human health. Check it out! Let me know what you think!
This week's episode focuses on finding the right strategy for better blood sugars for YOU. Some women need more information, understanding insulin's role. Others need strategies to avoid highly processed foods or learn intermittent fasting. Others require overcoming self-sabotage, building a trusting relationship with oneself. Recommendations for books and an overview of my group programs offer support and guidance.
In this episode, we explore a profound guiding principle that extends beyond health and into all aspects of life. Inspired by a powerful question—“What would the 80-year-old version of me want?”—we delve into the science behind this philosophy and discuss practical strategies to integrate it into daily life. This question engages the Reticular Activating System (RAS) to direct our perceptions and actions. By aligning our thoughts, gratitude and aspirations, we set ourselves to achieve our goals with clarity and ease.
In this comprehensive overview, I delve into the various types of diabetes, focusing primarily on type 1 vs type 2. Type 1, an autoimmune condition, affects insulin production, while type 2 is characterized by insulin resistance. We explore other variants of diabetes: gestational diabetes, LADA, MODY, and other less common types, shedding light on their causes, diagnostic methods, and treatment approaches. Emphasizing the crucial role of lifestyle modifications, particularly dietary changes, I highlight the importance of understanding the relationship between food choices and health. By adopting a diet aligned with human biology, women can live naturally healthy lives!
The podcast has a makeover! New name, new look, same commitment to bringing you quality science and strategies to improve your diabetes and your health! Last week's episode discussed nutritional ketosis as a strategy for improving insulin function and lowering blood sugars. This week we dive into pitfalls to avoid when using nutritional ketosis. Check it out! Try it out! Let me know how it goes!
Sometimes utilized as a key method in reversing type 2 diabetes, nutritional ketosis has gained popularity. It involves shifting the body's primary energy source from carbs to fats. This lowers insulin levels in your body. Moving into ketosis may initially cause discomfort, called the "keto flu." Ketosis targets insulin resistance, while aiding in healing various health issues like high cholesterol and inflammatory conditions. To enter ketosis, gradually lower carb intake to around 50 grams per day, monitoring ketone levels using urine strips or ketone meters. Caution is advised for those on medications, as adjustments may be necessary to avoid complications. Effective communication with healthcare providers is vital during dietary changes to ensure safety and proper medication management. Try it out, let me know how it goes!
This episode is a Q&A session. I cover how to manage protein intake even if you practice fasting. I answer questions regarding how long it takes and basic strategies to reverse insulin resistance. I answer questions about metformin and its impact on kidney function. There were two straight forward questions on the impact water can have on insulin resistance and how to find recipes without processed foods. Lastly, I address the unfortunate press release tying intermittent fasting with cardiovascular disease. Check it out! And let me know if you have any pressing questions!
Fasting aids in lowering insulin levels, allowing cells to heal from insulin resistance, a condition where cells resist insulin's instructions. Normally, insulin signals cells to absorb glucose for energy, but in insulin resistance, this process falters, leading to high blood sugar levels and diabetes. Intermittent fasting tackles this issue by reducing insulin exposure, promoting insulin sensitivity. For effective fasting, it's crucial to avoid anything that significantly raises insulin levels, like food. While fasting poses challenges, strategies such as hydration, bone broth, adding fat, adequate sleep, and staying busy can ease the transition. Planning ahead, involving family in meal prep, and navigating eating out are also helpful tactics for success.
Fasting offers cells a respite from insulin exposure, aiding in their healing process. Understanding hunger is pivotal; distinguishing between brain and physical hunger is essential when altering eating behaviors. The influence of processed foods on hormones and neurobiology disrupts our body-to-brain signaling, rendering hunger cues unreliable. Establishing boundaries, such as meal timing and mindfulness, becomes imperative. Starting gradually, adjusting fasting periods based on how you feel and blood sugar levels, is key. Medication users should proceed cautiously. While fasting may not be forever, it's a valuable tool for managing insulin resistance. Beware of using fasting to compensate for poor dietary choices, as it undermines a healthy food relationship.
This episode reviews the biology of type 2 diabetes and how intermittent fasting is a powerful tool to normalize your biology and improve your blood sugars. There is a review of physical hunger vs. brain hunger and how allowing this to guide your fasting regimen is helpful. And also, a discussion of various fasting schedules as well as unhelpful ways to use fasting. Check it out. Try it out. Let me know what you think!

I frequently get asked about good vs bad carbs when women are trying to determine how to eat to fix their type 2 diabetes. Although I am not in love with the “good” and “bad” terms, there is definitely a strategy to determine what carbohydrate-rich foods will improve your health and which ones will make you sicker. This podcast episode dives into how to determine what carbs work for your health and which ones do not! I also offer a few poignant questions for you to ask about your foods before you consume them. This episode discusses food cravings. Understanding and managing food cravings is crucial for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It's easy to blame the presence of tempting foods for our desires, but the truth lies in our thoughts. When faced with irresistible treats like donuts or candy, it's not the food itself that creates longing—it's the thoughts we have about them. By recognizing this, we can shift our mindset and develop strategies to combat cravings. Rather than fighting against our natural inclinations, we can nurture alternative beliefs that prioritize our well-being. This might involve reminding ourselves of the negative consequences of indulging, such as feeling sick or creating health issues. Additionally, practicing mindful eating, staying hydrated, and consuming balanced meals rich in protein and healthy fats can help regulate cravings. Ultimately, by understanding the psychology behind food desire and implementing practical strategies, we can empower ourselves to make healthier choices and improve our overall well-being. Welcome to the podcast where we dive into the intricacies of emotional eating. As we navigate the new year resolution cycle, we encounter "ass grabs" – the small lapses that precede major quits. The emotional triggers behind abandoning resolutions are explored, shedding light on the intricate workings of our brains. Emotions, thoughts, and actions are dissected in the thought model, revealing the intense feelings our brains send to our bodies. Applying this to emotional eating, this episode unveils the habit loops leading to reliance on food for comfort. The key to breaking the cycle: make a plan. Tune in for details and insights on healthier choices that lead to longevity.
This episode explores the nature of motivation, delving into the reasons behind its fluctuations. I review the causes and source of motivation, particularly how it can be intense when implementing new health regimens. This discussion uses your personal commitment to improving your blood sugars as an example, revisiting the ease of keeping our commitment to ourselves when it is fueled by enthusiasm and excitement. However, inevitably this motivation fades. A mindset shift becomes necessary. The solution to waning motivation lies in making decisions ahead of time, committing to the plan, and persevering even when you don’t feel like it, not relying on serendipitous feelings like excitement, enthusiasm, and motivation but instead being proactive with a plan. Try it out! Tell me how it goes!
This episode breaks down the basics of reversing type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance arises when cells no longer respond to insulin normally. Overexposure to insulin is caused by refined carbs. Disrupted insulin signaling occurs with industrial oils like seed, corn, and canola oils. Processed foods, combining these elements, conflict with our biology. Essential actions that fix type 2 diabetes include reading labels for carb counts, and fat sourcing. Limiting daily carb intake, avoiding harmful fats for 10-14 days, and utilizing a glucometer to monitor your sugars. Key to your health is prioritizing consistent commitment in order to positively impact blood sugar. Controlling cravings and reassessing perceived healthy foods are vital for enhancing A1c levels, promoting overall vitality, and longevity in women. This episode explains all these strategies.
This episode explores the transformative impact of gratitude on health, citing studies linking it to increased happiness and reduced doctor visits. I advocate for intentional rewiring of neural pathways through daily gratitude practices, with the suggestion to list only three meaningful things during your gratitude practice. I also share a personal journey of overcoming emotional eating by embracing gratitude. This episode challenges you to leave behind habits that you are done with in the new year, specifically unhealthy coping mechanisms. This episode concludes with my resolution to leave clutter and disorganization behind in 2023, emphasizing the power of intentional choices in order to reach your goals.

In this podcast episode, I explore our relationships with plans and how this impacts our health and well-being. I once saw plans as limitations, especially when it came to food choices. However, I realized that resisting plans led to unintended consequences, including my weight gain, insulin resistance, and prediabetes. This episode highlights the importance of a plan as a tool that keeps the rational, goal-oriented, prefrontal cortex in control, even when emotions, cravings, and our primitive brain try to take over. Plans simplify decision-making, prevent decision fatigue, and conserve mental energy. Examining your resistance to healthy choices and tailoring plans to address these challenges, is the key to success. This introspection is imperative. Ultimately, plans are not constraints but effective tools for achieving your goals in the midst of the stress and chaos of life. This podcast is meant to clear it up! A lovely listener has agreed to be coached for the benefit of all. Check it out and reap the benefits!

This episode paints a vivid picture of the excuse cycle by following a scenario involving afternoon candy cravings, ultimately leading to a cascade of poor choices and negative emotions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding and embracing uncomfortable emotions like desire, frustration, overwhelm, and boredom instead of using food as a coping mechanism.I outline how women can create plans from their rational, goal-oriented minds (the prefrontal cortex) to counteract impulsive decisions driven by the primitive brain's desire to avoid discomfort. By naming and acknowledging the feelings that trigger unhealthy eating habits, you can learn to develop resilience and gain insight into your thought patterns.
This episode is talking about the hottest drug to hit the market since statins! This drug has the promise of "weight loss for all." This week's episode is part 1 of a 2 part series discussing these weight loss medications. I have interviewed many women who have considered and even started these meds. I review the mindset that led these women to try these meds. The frustration, the worry, the desperation, the hope, and the lack of understanding. I talk about how some of these thoughts are even planted by the health care community. I explain how these thoughts are cognitive distortions that will never lead to the lasting changes and health that women want to see. Check it out. Tell me what you think!
In this episode, I give you the single thing you must stop doing if you want to fix your type 2 diabetes. I don’t talk about bread, twinkies, or soda. This is not about the food you are eating. It is the thought that keeps so many women stuck feeding themselves food that makes them sick.
After eating something that does not align with their biology, typically a food they had not planned to eat, many women tell themselves “it’s fine.” “It wasn’t that bad.” Or “it won’t be a problem.” In this episode, I dive into why this story is keeping you frustrated, confused, and worried about your type 2 diabetes. I also discuss why and how to stop this destructive thought. Check it out!

This week’s podcast is one of my favorite topics. Many women get STUCK unable to make the dietary and lifestyle changes needed to reverse their type 2 diabetes because of their “bad relationship” with food! When they can’t force themselves to stop eating the food, they become frustrated, worried, and confused. Then end up feeling guilty and ashamed that their diabetes persists or even progresses.
When we have bad relationships with other humans, we have to change that relationship. This might mean exiting the relationship. There is a common experience amongst humans in processing these stages of emotions. These emotions must be processed in order to not become stuck in one stage or another.
When we have a bad relationship with food and we decide to CHANGE that relationship we will go through these same stages. We often become STUCK in one of these stages because we do not process the emotions in that stage. Many times we don’t process the emotions because we don’t think we should have that feeling about FOOD. It seems silly! And that keeps us stuck!
In this episode I go through the stages of grieving a breakup. You know that “bad boyfriend” in college? The significant other that strung you along for months. The one who would make you feel like a million bucks and then disappear from your life for days or even weeks. You end up feeling confused, worried, and frustrated. This is a relationship most of us have experienced and decided to exit the relationship.
This is very similar to the relationship with food that makes you sick with type 2 diabetes. It strings you along, with promises of being “ok.” It makes you feel amazing, buzzed on chocolate, and then when your blood sugar sky-rockets, you feel confused, worried, and frustrated.
This episode walks you through the stages of grief and how to apply it not just to the end of bad relationships with other humans, but also how to apply the stages to the end of your bad relationship with food.

Someone once told me, “Life is like a quarter that you only get to spend once. Spend it wisely.” Many women feel that we are pulled in so many different directions that we cannot find the time to invest in fixing our type 2 diabetes. We tell ourselves that our kids’ schedules, our family commitments, and our work requirements are why we cannot spend the time to learn to live naturally healthy lives. Of course, this keeps us stuck and sick. Learning the value of our time is imperative not only to living a naturally healthy life, but also to intentionally living the life WE WANT!
There are many thoughts we have regarding how to fix our type 2 diabetes. We have many thoughts regarding the reasons we continue to struggle with making decisions that serve our health. Frequently those thoughts seem like they are just truths. “I don’t know why.” “I just like that food.” And “I am just going to quit.”
Any of those sound familiar to you? This episode walks you through what those thoughts are creating in your life and how to stop them.
These have to be fixed before you can move on to living a naturally healthy life. Check it out and let me know what you think!
It is so easy to let our brains believe something needs to change. My schedule needs to be different so I can fix my diabetes. I need to never be around the foods that trip me up if I am going to fix my diabetes. My body needs to be younger so I can exercise in order to fix my diabetes.
We all want to have amazing relationships. Women frequently feel our value is determined by the relationships in our lives. We struggle because we cannot control the other humans in our relationships. This leads to feelings of hurt, disappointment, and sometimes anger. Our society teaches us that others in our lives have to change in order for our relationships to be good. We try to make that happen, and others in our lives feel manipulated. We can’t understand why it doesn’t fix our relationships. This podcast will break down where the problem is with this approach we are taught in society and give you a functional strategy for changing. Check it out!
Many women block the results they want to see in their life due to their resistance to doing the hard things. They exchange advancements in careers, meaningful relationships, and health and longevity for the resistance of doing the uncomfortable thing. They postpone what they want in their lives waiting for the outcome to be easier. Naturally, this keeps them stuck. The meaningful things in life are never easy. The “easy” is not meaningful. For type 2 diabetes, the “easy” is taking meds, injecting insulin, eating the foods that you that keep you sick, and staying diabetic. That’s easy. The hard part is living healthy. If living healthy was “easy,” it would not be elusive. EVERYBODY would be doing it. And it would be nothing to talk about. Meaningful endeavors are always going to be hard. Waiting for them to be easy means you will never do them. This episode discusses this topic as it was presented by Kara Lawson, the head coach of the women’s basketball team at Duke University. She, aptly states, we need to get better at doing hard things. BOOM! She is spot on. Take a minute to check out her 3 minute clip and then listen to this episode of Reversing Diabetes with DelaneMD to hear how to apply this mindset to your type 2 diabetes!
We have many thoughts in our brains that lead to feelings and actions that keep us from living a life free of type 2 diabetes. Cognitive behavioral therapists call many of these cognitive distortions. Cognitive distortions are thought processes that lead to misinterpretations of experiences we have. Frequently these thoughts are over exaggerations or irrational understandings of the events in our lives. These misunderstandings lead us to stop trying. Either the thought error makes us believe it's too hard, it's impossible, or it won't matter anyway. These adulterations of reality block us from creating the lives we want--free from type 2 diabetes. This episode describes these distortions, gives examples, and gives us a process for deconstructing these thoughts so that we can move past them. Check it out!
Awareness is the skill of managing our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Many of our poor food choices come from lack of awareness. When we feel cravings, anger, or overwhelm, and we have a habit of reaching for a donut, burgers, or the candy dish, we frequently are unaware that this feeling is the source. More than this, we are unaware of the thoughts that lead to these feelings. Instead, we pour our mental resources into changing our environment (avoiding the donuts, burgers, or candies) to avoid the habit of reaching for the food. This is never going to be a long-term fix. You are not investing in fixing the actual problem. The problem is not in the environment, the problem is in the thoughts and feelings that drive you to the action of eating foods that make you sick. Awareness is a tool to change this. This episode dives into this. Check it out!
If you feel you are self-sabotaging reversing your type 2 diabetes, there is help. When we determine what our self-sabotaging behaviors are trying to say, we can figure out how to change the behaviors. Snacking when you are sleepy means you need sleep, not chips. Seeking comfort foods when we are sad means we need comfort not cookies. Craving ice cream when we are lonely means we need a friend, not rocky road. Wanting to hit the candy bowl at work in the afternoon when you are feeling overwhelmed means you need to manage your calendar, not chocolate. If these scenarios describe your daily pitfalls, this episode will break it down and give you strategies to STOP! Check it out, let me know what you think!

Despite the name of this episode, there is actually a lot more than feelings discussed. This episode shares a success story, answers listeners' questions, and discusses the impermanence of feelings compared to the permanence of the actions we take from our feelings. This episode is kind of a hodgepodge! But that seemed like an odd title! Check it out, let me know what you think!
This episode is the first of a series of three episodes discussing my journey to loving my relationship with food and my health. I discuss the out of control feelings I had with food. Upcoming episodes, I will discuss what it was like as I made the changes and also what is like to live with peace and trust around food and my health. Check out this episode! Tell me what you think!

This was one of my favorite episodes to record! Using the thought model, I explain how feelings of deprivation create the results of being sick with type 2 diabetes. Thoughts like "80/20 is ok," or "this is unfair," or "I am never going to be able to eat that again" do not help us to fix our type 2 diabetes. I explain why these thoughts do not work, then I use thought model to consider new thoughts that will help you fix it!
Authenticity is a powerful thing. I like to think of it similar to "authority," because "authentic" can carry that sort of power when we learn how to use it effectively. This episode breaks down the steps to develop our authenticity as it relates to our goals and our health. Learning to care for our health in a way that aligns with our true, authentic self, makes food and exercise decisions straightforward and easy to execute.
I hesitate to give this information out.But it is the question I get most frequently and attached with the most frustration. So, here it goes!If you want to know what I recommend you eat to reverse your type 2 diabetes. HERE. IT. IS. Let me know what you think!

What they don't understand is why they keep making choices that aren't aligning with that biology.
THIS episode helps unpack the answer to "Why?" It slows down the process of when we make decisions that don't align with our biology. It helps you to see where the misstep is. This episode helps you to determine a path to DOING IT DIFFERENTLY!

Feelings and sensations are the way the human beings experience the world. Sometimes these feelings and sensations feel compelling. They feel like directives to actions. This episode dives into what that means and looks like! Check it out!

People understand emotional eating. In coaching we call it "buffering." When we do not believe that we can feel our emotion and we need to fix or run from it, or even distract from it, this is buffering. This episode explains how emotional eating and buffering keeps us from achieving the things we want in life and how we change this part of our relationship with food.
You want to know the thing to do INSTEAD of eating the food? This podcast will clear it up! Check it out!
Resistance to doing something is a pretty common experience. Sometimes resistance is a meaningful indicator for a pause. Many times, when our goals and aspirations are involved, resistance is an indicator to MOVE FORWARD! It is not a red light, but instead it is a green light to keep going! When we are resistant to do the scary things necessary to reverse our type 2 diabetes, resistance is a key indicator to keep going. The things we want--normal blood sugars, no medications, and naturally healthy living--are on the other side of the resistance we are feeling.
Resistance is an indicator that it's GO TIME! Check out this episode to find out why!

We have all been taught to look at the "pro's" and "con's" of a situation to determine which decision we want to make. In fact, many of us were taught that this was The Best way to make decisions. We spend time writing the lists, evaluating them, re-writing them, and wringing our hands over the "right" decision. This keeps us stuck with indecision, sometimes for weeks, months, or years. We wait, hoping the pro's or con's will finally push us over an edge and make the "right" decision clear. During this episode I discuss how this is NOT the way to make a decisions. We do not use this strategy to make important decisions in our lives. It is not an effective strategy to use regarding our health and reversing our type 2 diabetes. Check it out to find out why a pro's and con's list will not help you reverse your diabetes and the strategy that will!
n the past, I have taught how our thoughts create our feelings, which drive our emotions, leading to our actions and our results. Do you use the phrase "I am on the Struggle Bus?" Do you feel that the "struggle is real?" Does it feel hard? Is it a challenge? Frequently we believe that the struggle is out of our control. This podcast episode dives into the source of our struggles and how to fix it!
Most women get stuck when they realize the results they want, require a change. They believe they need to “just make the change.” When they can’t “just make the change,” they believe it is because of their willpower or self-discipline. They make attempts to change, do not get the results they want, then make it mean they are faulty somehow.
This is no way to get the results you want.
Long-lasting action changes occurs in 3 steps. I have done podcasts on this in the past (episode #21) but understanding this is imperative and a revisit seems timely! Learning how to become aware of what is creating your current results, then learning how to neutrally accept it BEFORE you look to change is how we create long-lasting results. Check out this episode to find out why and how to do it!

We run from guilt. We think it means there is a problem. We hide from it. We don't want to look at it. We run from guilt. We think it means there is a problem. We hide from it. We don't want to look at it. But I would offer that guilt is telling you something INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. In fact, guilt is a key to reversing your diabetes. I know, this may not make sense. We are taught in society not to be unkind to ourselves, not to be harsh, not to talk down to ourselves.
THIS IS COMPLETELY TRUE--don't do any of those things! BUT...
Do see what the unpleasant emotion of guilt is trying to tell you, because it is a gift. It is The Key to reversing your type 2 diabetes! Check out this episode to find out why!
Women come to me wanting to know how to fix their type 2 diabetes. How do I reverse my type 2 diabetes? How do I get off my diabetes medications? How do I get healthy? They think that I am going to give them a food plan. They think I will give them an exercise plan. They think I will teach them something about their bodies and science. Good news: I will TOTALLY DO THAT! But that is not the issue at hand. They really do NOT need me to teach them why chocolate cake is a problem. They know chocolate cake is a problem. This is why they are frustrated. These women have done so many challenging things in their lives. Professionally and personally, they have accomplished so much.
But chocolate cake has them stuck. And it does not make sense to them.
The reason they are stuck about the chocolate cake is because they do not know how to deal with the desires and the feelings they experience which lead them to eat the chocolate cake. I teach women how to navigate this. This is what I do that is different from any other “get healthy” program out there. I teach women how to have a feeling and NOT allow it to mean they need to EAT the cake!
This episode will teach you how. Check it out!

This podcast explains why the feelings are the most important part!

I teach my clients to how to take EXQUISITELY good care of themselves. My program revolves around learning the importance of taking exquisite care of yourself. I teach self-care strategies. The most important self-care strategy I teach is how to stop putting foods in your body that make you sick with diseases like type 2 diabetes. When we start valuing self-care, we start to understand that the bag of Halloween candy is NOT a treat. It is NOT self care. Anything that causes our bodies to be sick with any disease is NOT a treat. This podcast episode teaches strategies for self-care and the mindset to IMPLMENT them. DO IT!!
Do you ever ask yourself why it is always doom and gloom? Why does my brain always go to the worst case scenario? This episode will answer those questions. The human brain is hardwired to a negativity bias. This negativity bias often leads to results we do not like in our lives. This episode discusses what negativity bias is, how it shows up in our lives creating self-sabotaging results with type 2 diabetes, and how to stop it! (Photo courtesy of The Awkward
I teach tools to my clients. Lots of them. Intermittent fasting, nutritional ketosis, and cleaning up your diet. But the most important tools I teach, the tools that are most effective in helping my clients reverse their type 2 diabetes are the tools of awareness. There are many individual tools that I teach to help my clients gain awareness. Learning awareness is how every other tool I teach becomes effective in creating permanent changes in your life. Unfortunately many times we learn strategies and treat them as RULES we must follow, not TOOLS to gain awareness. In this episode of Reversing Diabetes with DelaneMD, I talk about why they are tools not rules, how making rules keeps us stuck, and how to use tools to create the health we are wanting in our lives!
There is so much information out there about diabetes-related complications. This leads many people to worry about their diabetes, such that they do not realize how the disease is impacting other organ systems. This episode is the last of a series discussing the impact high insulin has on our entire bodies. I discuss how high insulin levels (the process that leads to type 2 diabetes) also leads to obesity and triggers inflammatory responses in our bodies.
Reversing type 2 diabetes starts with figuring out why we are choosing to eat food when we know it is creating our disease. It’s always a choice, but knowing how neurochemistry impacts this experience creates clarity in order to drive decisions in favor of our goals. This episode discusses how dopamine works to create motivation or squash our motivation.
In my DelaneMD program I help women reverse their diabetes with lifestyle modifications. Diabetes is caused by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is caused by too much insulin in our system. Too much insulin in our system is caused by the foods we eat (for the most part!). But the benefit of reversing your diabetes does not stop there. Reversing the insulin resistance has far reaching benefits to other parts of our bodies and other diseases. In this podcast I discuss the relationship with insulin resistance and dementia. I review various mechanisms that are thought to contribute to dementia. I also discuss why medications are not doing a great job at treating dementia.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the accumulation of liver fat in people who drink little or no alcohol. Why am I talking about this on the Reversing Diabetes with DelaneMD podcast? Because NAFLD is a symptom of having too much insulin in your system for prolonged periods of time. During this podcast, I continue my discussion on chronic diseases caused by how we eat including type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
If you listen to my podcast regularly, you understand that type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much insulin in your system. But did you know several other diseases are correlated with hyperinsulinemia (aka too much insulin)? During this podcast episode, I discuss polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and how insulin impacts various hormones causing the hallmark symptoms of PCOS, such as abnormal hair growth, irregular periods, and infertility.
We often avoid making healthful changes because we believe "being healthy" means never eating the foods we love. In this podcast episode, I share a conversation I had with a woman who believed this and lamented not eating a recipe from her childhood that had special meaning. My recommendation was, "go ahead and eat the cake!" When you start living a naturally healthy life and reverse your type 2 diabetes, you also start collecting better biology. Better biology means your body is prepared to handle the occasional food insult, such as a piece of cake on your birthday.
Avoiding negative emotions can lead to poorer health. Often, we turn to activities, alcohol, or food to “buffer” away negative emotions. Buffering is distracting ourselves from the negative emotion. During this podcast, I discuss why allowing our emotions is so important for living a naturally healthy life. I also present strategies for digging into and managing our emotions without turning to food or alcohol.
What books do I love? This podcast is going to tell you my recommendations! The work that I do with women involves learning science, learning about our minds, and giving ourselves the grace and space to learn how to live naturally healthy lives free from the struggles of diabetes. Reversing diabetes is HARD WORK. It's a process. There are many books I recommend to help along the way. This podcast dives into a few of them! I hope you enjoy it!
It is a privilege working with my clients. During this interview, I talk with Charlotte about her journey to being naturally healthy. As a registered nurse with a graduate degree in public health, Charlotte thought she new what was making her sick. Starting in her 20s, she often shamed herself for not being in control of her health. Charlotte tried different commercial programs and failed to get her weight and health under control. Then she found DelaneMD. Check out this amazing and inspiring discussion with Charlotte.
Clients often contact me worried because their morning fasting blood sugars are higher than their evening non-fasting blood sugars. I tell them, “No, you aren’t eating in your sleep.” Fasting blood sugars are an indication of your overall health, not of what you recently ate. The two factors that influence fasting blood sugars are cortisol release and insulin resistance. During this podcast episode, I discuss some non-food related factors that affect fasting blood sugars.
Learning to manage thoughts and feelings are essential to living a naturally healthy life. As we have discussed in previous podcast episodes, our thoughts drive emotions (feelings), actions and inevitably our results. Coaching helps you to address those thoughts and feelings that do not align with your goals. During this podcast, I review the thought model and discuss how to manage challenging thoughts and feelings so you can reverse diabetes and live a naturally healthy life.
Reversing type 2 diabetes so you are no longer sick requires changing the way you eat. Permanently changing your eating habits, requires you to address the underlying thoughts that drive you to eat unhealthy foods. When my clients start changing their thoughts about food, they often experience emotions similar to the five states of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. During this podcast, I discuss how the loss of certain foods causes these emotions and provide examples from my own journey. I also offer strategies and recommendations for moving through the different stages towards acceptance.
Addressing the negative emotions that often drive us to eat is essential to implementing permanent lifestyle changes, living healthy and reversing type 2 diabetes. Shame is one of the most difficult negative emotions to address. Shame is the emotion that will erode the part of ourselves that believes we are capable of change. During this podcast episode, I discuss how to recognize shame and strategies for dealing with shame.
When it comes to reversing type 2 diabetes, you need to make a lifestyle change not just implement an interim diet. Diets are typically short-lived and unsustainable. Most commercial diets are prescriptive, meaning they tell you what to eat or even force you to buy pre-packaged foods. Often, these diets do not take into consideration your individual likes and dislikes. This makes maintaining these diets difficult. I teach my clients to develop eating protocols that support their long term goals. These eating protocols are developed by the client and are consistent with what they like to eat. During this podcast episode, I discuss the 3 steps for developing eating protocols.
During this podcast episode, I answer several common questions submitted by podcast listeners. Many questions are straightforward, such as “Why are Wheat Thins bad to eat?” but provide a launching off point for a more in-depth discussion on the problems with processed foods. Additionally, I discuss (1) how to create a food protocol, (2) whether potatoes and fruit are healthy for diabetics, (3) touch on the neurochemistry of several foods, such as dairy, and (4) many more questions.
Client often engage my coaching services because they want to reverse their type 2 diabetes and stop insulin injections and medications. Typically, these goals are achieved in the first 3-weeks. For the rest of the 6-month program, we work on our thoughts, beliefs and achieving new goals. Often, this means clients start moving beyond just eliminating disease and begin working to gain better health, vitality, and longevity. For this 100th episode, I discuss my journey to health and vitality.
In America, we are often told to “be positive” or “look on the Brightside.” This addiction to positivity, however, can undermine our progress towards goals. My clients often shrug off their failures by saying, “I didn’t do that bad” or “I’m still doing better than before.” Looking on the Brightside causes people to not glean the important lessons from feelings, which results in repeating the same counterproductive action. During this podcast, I discuss the dangers of toxic positivity and how to use feelings as data to improve health, reverse diabetes, and achieve health goals.
Achieving your goals takes time and practice. Clients want to achieve their goals quickly. They want to reverse diabetes and lose weight, but when it does not happen immediately, they think something is wrong. The good news is reversing diabetes can happen quickly, but goals like weight loss are dependent upon the limits of biology. During this episode, I discuss the biology and neurology of permanent lifestyle changes, and the mindset strategy to achieve them as quickly as biologically possible.
Living a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions requires more than just eating right. Other non-food factors, such as stress, influence hormones and body chemistry. During this podcast, I discuss the effects of stress on your body and introduce evidence-based strategies for managing stress.
Learning to manage food cravings is essential to reverse your type 2 diabetes naturally. Often we turn to food for emotional reasons, such as stress, boredom or excitement. During this podcast, I discuss how to recognize and manage food cravings.
When it comes to life, comparison is truly the thief of joy. It is also the way many of my clients unintentionally diminish the joy of simple pleasures. During this podcast, I discuss the one mindset that keeps my clients stuck. Understanding this mindset and implementing simple strategies is one way I help my clients to reverse type 2 diabetes and live a naturally healthy life.
Are you looking to reverse your type 2 diabetes, stop the painful finger sticks, and end the cycle of doctor visits, medication, and more medications? Medical research shows you can reverse your diabetes naturally through lifestyle modification. During this podcast, I review the basics of reversing type 2 diabetes including cleaning up your diet, nutritional ketosis and intermittent fasting.
When Carol’s lab results were outside of normal range, her physicians tried to put her on medication. Carol pushed back and decided to take a more naturally healthy path. After 6-months of coaching with DelaneMD, Carol saw improvement or normalization in many lab values including A1c, thyroid and cholesterol. During this podcast, I discuss Carol’s amazing and empowering journey to being naturally healthy.
Living a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes and daily finger sticks requires that we learn to not use food to buffer negative emotions. One of the common drivers of negative emotions is dissatisfaction at work, dissatisfaction in life, and the consternation over not knowing or living up to our purpose. During this episode, I talk with Gabrielle Smith, Life and Purpose Coach, about her coaching philosophy and the steps she teaches to help women discover their purpose, live authentically, and find happiness.
The way we talk to our children dictates how cooperative or rebellious they become as teenagers. Approaching our children from a position of power and coercion versus compassion and kindness is often counterproductive to building a self-confident and cooperative child. This is the same with self-talk. Negative self-talk can undermine your desire to live a naturally healthy life and free from type 2 diabetes. During this podcast, I discuss the undermining nature of negative self-talk and how to stop.
Many people struggle with being hungry. They experience fear and anxiety about being hungry, and believe hunger is an emergency. In fact, this idea of hunger as an emergency is perpetuated in our society. During this podcast, I discuss what hunger really is from a biological perspective and present ways to deal with hunger. Understanding and controlling your thoughts regarding hunger is an essential component of living a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes.
Did you know that your body fat makes you fat? It sounds counterintuitive, but according to the latest research fat is a complicated endocrine organ not just energy storage. Endocrine organs produce hormones that regulate your body’s function. During this podcast, I discuss how fat tissue influences the production of new fat.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is tasked with developing Federal nutrition guidelines that inform health professionals, schools and other entities. These guidelines provide food-based recommendations for how to be healthful and prevent diet-related diseases. During this podcast, I discuss the ambiguous nature of some of these guidelines and recommend applying critical thinking when interpreting them for yourself. Additionally, I talk with my children about how these guidelines are applied at school. Specifically, I ask them what food is served at school and what they like or don’t like to eat.
During this podcast, I discuss the four most common questions I get from clients and podcast listeners. These include: (1) Why are my blood sugars highest in the morning? (2) Why do I discuss weight loss so much? (3) Which artificial sweeteners are okay to eat? (4) What can I take to reverse my type 2 diabetes?
When we experience negative emotions, at that moment, it is easy to believe we personify that feeling. This belief can intensify the emotion and cause actions that undermine our goals of living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes. Linguistic space refers to the practice of giving yourself some grace by using accurate experiential language versus defining language. For example, the difference between “I am anxious” and “I feel anxious.” The first is the embodiment or personification of the emotion and the latter is a temporary experience. This small tweak in how you acknowledge your emotions can helps to ratchet down the intensity and take actions that align with your goals.
When it comes to New Years Resolutions, we often abandon them by March. This is crazy, since there is still three-quarters of the year left and there is still plenty of time to reevaluate, recommit and achieve your goals. During this podcast, I discuss the process of revisiting, reevaluating and recommitting to your goal on a monthly basis.
We all have opinions about what should or should not happen. Ruminating on these “should” thoughts can cause us to feel helpless. When our thoughts about a situation create feelings of helplessness or sadness, we often turn to food or other vices to buffer away negative emotions. During this podcast, I discuss how to evaluate your thoughts critically so you can overcome challenging situations without turning to food.
The old saying, “we are what we eat” is absolutely true. When we eat healthy, we are healthy. When we eat foods that are highly processed and unhealthy, we are unhealthy and sick. In this Podcast, I discuss how food affects our bodies and why eating naturally healthy food is essential to living a long and vibrant life free from diabetes.
When a negative or uncomfortable feeling arises, it is common for people to manage these feelings with food. Food acts as a distraction and and buffers negative feelings by releasing dopamine, which is a feel-good hormone. Learning to manage these emotions and understand the underlying thoughts that drive our actions is an essential tool for living a naturally healthy life. During this podcast, I discuss a concept I call "Creating a Container" as a tool for analyzing and better managing emotions without food.
The notion that we "must be perfect" in the pursuit of goals can be debilitating. Often, clients tell me how they failed because they weren't eating 100% keto or missed a day of exercise. Consequently, this thought that they "can't do it" causes them to throw in the towel and give up. During this podcast, I explore why we strive for perfection and WHAT IF we could live in THE GRAY ZONE. What if it doesn’t have to be a morning work out at the gym? What if the work out did not have to be so uncomfortable? Maybe there is a gray zone between killing it at the gym and laying on the couch.
When clients come to me, they are often on all sorts of diabetes medications. As we work together to make lifestyle changes, these medications need to be adjusted. Ideally, if you can make lifestyle changes and reverse your type 2 diabetes, these medications can be eliminated. During this podcast, I discuss the many diabetes medications on the market, their benefits and side effects. As with all my podcasts, the content is for information only and not intended as medical advice or treatment. I always recommend working with a primary care physician to manage your diabetes and diabetes medications.
Making and sustaining changes can be challenging. Many people rely on willpower to muster through temptations and cravings. Unfortunately, willpower will only get you so far. Eventually, willpower fatigues and old behaviors take over. Achieving permanent lifestyle change requires understanding and changing how you think. As a coach, I provide education based on medical research and science, help clients develop plans, track results, and dig into the underlying thoughts that often undermine progress. During this podcast, I talk with my client Angel to provide insight into what coaching is like.
Meditation is a useful tool for managing stress, anxiety, and blood sugars. Medical research shows that a meditation practice can reduce the stress hormones that contribute to high blood sugars through actively calming the mind and body, During this podcast, I discuss the research behind meditation and how to start a meditation practice.
Did you know other non-food related factors can influence blood sugar levels? Stress, lack of sleep, and visceral fat (body fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity) are just a few non-eating related lifestyle factors that cause the release of hormones that can raise blood sugar levels. Hormones are chemical messengers produced by the body and released directly into the bloodstream to help regulate biological processes, such as sleep, hunger, growth, and metabolism. During this podcast, I discuss several hormones and their effect on blood sugar levels as well as what you can do to manage them.
Exercise is good for your heart, great for your lungs, and amazing for your soul. It is also a great tool for reversing type 2 diabetes. When you exercise, your muscles use glucose for fuel. Additionally, this process happens without the need for insulin. This means lower blood glucose levels in a way that bypasses your insulin resistance. In studies, exercise combined with modest weight loss was more effective at improving the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in high-risk people than Metformin alone. WOW! During this podcast, I discuss the research on exercise and blood sugar control as well as review the guidelines. Finally, I provide some caveats to exercise that diabetics MUST consider.
Do you want to know the one simple tool you can use every day to reverse your type 2 diabetes? During this BONUS episode, I discuss how to overcome the unexpected that often undermines our health goals.
It is easy to underestimate the amount of courage it takes to start something new. Whether we are starting college in an unknown city or investing our time, money, and hopes in a new wellness program, taking that first step (and the many steps after) takes COURAGE. During this podcast, I discuss the concept of courage and how proactively training, preparing, and utilizing data to make informed decisions, aids in being courageous.
People who regularly practice gratitude have more positive emotions, greater happiness, and improved health. According to research, people who take the time to practice gratitude report greater vitality, better sleep, and a stronger immune system. During this podcast, I discuss the research behind gratitude and recommend building a gratitude practice. I also provide an example of gratitude by walking through what I am grateful for in 2020.
Do you struggle to live a naturally healthy life? Do you feel like your circumstances are unique and make changing habits difficult? Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” This statement underscores my philosophy that your beliefs or thoughts dictate your results. Sometimes thoughts can be empowering. Other times, thoughts can be unproductive or even counterproductive. “It is SO HARD” is an example of a thought that is counterproductive. During this podcast, I discuss how to start changing the long-held belief that it is SO HARD, which is an essential first step to living a naturally healthy life and reversing type 2 diabetes.
As you turn the page on 2020 and get ready for 2021, what will you leave behind? This time of year, I always ask my clients to spend time evaluating this question. It is different than adding a New Year’s resolution. Often, leaving something behind is more meaningful and more challenging. When it comes to being naturally healthy and reversing type 2 diabetes, it may mean leaving behind your use of food as a coping tool. During this podcast, I discuss how to approach this task as you prepare for the next year.
Does Aunt Martha make the best pie? This holiday, will she tell you, “just have a one piece of pie because it is SO GOOD”? Food pushers are people who encourage you to eat off plan. Often, they push you to eat unhealthy foods. While their intentions are typically good, it can be challenging to tell them “NO” because of your thoughts. During this podcast, I discuss how our thoughts give these food pushers power to disrupt our food plans and how to find more productive thoughts.
During this podcast, I interview my client Randy about his unique and amazing journey to becoming naturally healthy and diabetes-free. After getting clean and sober, food became Randy’s new addiction. He was obese, had a diagnosis of diabetes, and was taking multiple medications including insulin injections. Randy believed type 2 diabetes was a chronic disease that gets progressively worse, causes loss of eyesight, amputations and eventually death. During a spiritual journey, Randy prayed to find a new path. He started with DelaneMD figuring he had nothing to lose. Today, Randy’s A1c is 5.5 without medications, he lost over 80 pounds, kicked his food addiction, and is enjoying a more vibrant, energetic life.
Feelings of obligation can become overwhelming during the holiday season. Often, clients come to me frustrated because of all the things they “have to” do, such as buying gifts, cooking meals, cleaning, decorating, etc. During this podcast, I discuss the “have to” mindset and challenge the belief that we must do anything. When it comes to life, everything is optional. We choose our responsibilities based upon the outcomes we desire. This “get to” thought is a much more empowering mindset.
Especially during the holidays when there are parties and feast days, it is easy to “loose control.” Being out-of-control, however, is just a thought. The problem is this thought drives feelings of powerlessness and the action of eating out of control. The reality is, you are voluntarily relinquishing or giving up your control. During this podcast, I discuss why we often feel out-of-control and the thoughts that drive our feelings, actions, and results.
As a coach, I get the privilege of working with some amazing people. During this podcast, you will meet my client Kim as she shares her inspiring journey to become naturally healthy. As a nurse by training, Kim thought she understood diabetes and she tried everything to avoid going on insulin. As her numbers got worse, she felt like it was hopeless. Kim resolved herself to a lifetime of diabetes and insulin. Through the DelaneMD program, Kim discovered a new approach to managing her high blood sugars. Today, she feels better, has more energy, lost weight and has stopped several medications.
What if you could live to 120 years old? In his book, “Lifespan: Why We Age – and Why We Don't Have To,” Dr. David Sinclair discusses ongoing research on longevity and how 120 years may soon be the normal lifespan. During this podcast, I summarize some of the research discussed in this book as well as other research on longevity. I also present several supplements and medications that are being researched as having potential longevity benefits. Finally, I emphasize the importance of living a naturally healthy life as the foundation for longevity.
Do you think you have low blood sugar? When you feel woozy or tired, do you turn to high-sugar snacks like honey or candy? Many diabetics have been warned about the dangers of low blood sugars and worry as soon as they feel symptoms like shakiness or clamminess. Many of these symptoms, however, are also associated with high blood sugars. During this podcast, I discuss low blood sugar and the thoughts or fears diabetics often have about low blood sugar. I also emphasize the importance of monitoring blood sugars to determine whether blood sugars are really low.
Often, we mistake brain hunger for true hunger. Brain hunger is a craving for a specific food that starts in our brain. In contrast, true hunger starts in our stomach. For example, when you crave certain foods like a candy bar or ice cream, this is brain hunger not true hunger. Understanding the difference between these two types of hunger is an essential skill for living a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes and other weight related diseases. During this podcast, I discuss strategies for recognizing brain hunger. I also discuss the hunger scale, which is a tool I use with my clients to better gauge their hunger.
When it comes to living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes and other weight related diseases, the weekends and holidays can be challenging. Family get-togethers and evenings out with friends often result in overeating, higher blood sugars and a growing waistline. Even if you are “good” all week long, a weekend of uncontrolled eating can undermine any weekday gains. During this podcast, I discuss the mindset that often drives overeating during weekends and holidays as well as strategies for staying on track.
In my program, I teach clients to plan. Planning is a necessary skill when it comes to making decisions that serve your body. Being skilled at keeping those decisions is just as necessary. When you make decisions about food and health, do you give yourself an out? Are your decisions tentative? Like Yoda says, “do or do not, there is no try.” During this podcast, I discuss the importance of making decisions and sticking to them.
We often think of hunger as an emergency, but it is not an emergency. The fact is more people die from overeating than from hunger in America. Understanding the key drivers of hunger is an essential component to living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes and other weight related illness. During this podcast, I discuss how to differentiate between physical hunger, which is your body’s need for nutrients, and brain hunger, which are cravings.
Feelings are important because they drive our actions, and inevitably our results. When a negative or uncomfortable feeling arises, it is common for people to manage these feelings with food. Food acts as a distraction and and buffers negative feelings by releasing dopamine, which is a feel-good hormone. Learning how to manage these feelings without food is a key component to living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes and other weight-related diseases. During the podcast, I discuss feelings and strategies for managing them without food.
Planning meals in advance is an essential strategy for living naturally healthy life free from diabetes and other weight-related diseases. But what does a plan mean? Just writing down the foods and times you intend to eat often isn't enough. When it comes to developing and following a plan, I teach my clients to get granular with their thoughts so they can "up level" their plans. After all, plans typically fail because of thoughts and brain chatter. During this podcast, I discuss how to plan to succeed by anticipating counterproductive thoughts and obstacles.
Our thoughts drive how and how much we eat. Often, we are use food to buffer away negative emotions. Other times, we associate limiting our eating with feelings of deprivation, anxiety, or scarcity. These feelings cause us to eat foods that don’t serve our bodies as well as overeat. Slowing down and enjoying our food is one strategy that can help you be more intentional about eating. For example, Blue Zone research has shown that people who pray before meals eat more sensibly. This is most likely because they are slowing down and not allowing feelings of anxiety, scarcity, and others to drive how much they eat. During this podcast, I discuss how slowing down is an essential tool for living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes, hypertension, and other weight-related disease.
Do you find you are constantly saying, “I’ll start my diet tomorrow” or “this Monday I begin exercising” only to start, quit and postpone again? Learning how to stop putting off the hard work is key to living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes, heart disease and other weight-related diseases. During this podcast, I discuss why starting tomorrow doesn’t work and how to stop procrastinating.
Living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes, overeating, over-drinking, smoking and the associated diseases, requires making healthy choices. Making the healthy choice, however, can be challenging because we get caught up with feelings of deprivation. Many people attempt to muscle through the challenge using only will-power. Inevitably, will-power will fatigue. That is why it’s so important to acknowledge all your desires – the desire for pizza and the desire to be fit and healthy – and give them equal attention. During this podcast, I discuss the importance of recognizing our competing desires and giving both thoughts equal consideration, and how this practice is essential for reaching health goals.
When it comes to living a naturally healthy life free from diabetes or other weight-related disease, it is important to understand thoughts. Thoughts drive feelings, actions and inevitably our results. Gaining a better understanding of our thoughts is the first step towards getting better results. The challenge for many of my clients, is that we seem to have many different and seemingly contradictory thoughts. We both want to eat the Oreos and to be healthy. During this podcast, I discuss these contradictory thoughts and how making intentional decisions is what matters when it comes to living naturally healthy.
When it comes to living a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes or other weight-related diseases, often the first step is the most difficult. This is because taking that first step requires us to believe in a different possibility, which means we must believe in ourselves. For some clients, taking the first step means overcoming disbelief, insecurities, shame or competing desires. During this podcast, I discuss the different challenges clients face and how addressing the thoughts that drive these beliefs is essential to living a naturally healthy life.
There is a sleep shortage epidemic in America. The problem is, just like poor diet or sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep has many significant negative effects on the human body. In fact, the World Health Organization lists lack of sleep as a probable carcinogen. Not getting enough good-quality sleep impacts, weight, cardiovascular health, learning, memory,…Read More+
If you listen to my podcast, you’ve heard me discuss the idea that thoughts drive emotions, actions and inevitably results. When it comes to the action of eating, our desire for food is always driven by these same thoughts and emotions. Emotional eating isn’t always the Bridget Jones’ Diary image of a recently dumped and alone woman eating a gallon of chocolate ice cream. While these extreme emotions do drive overeating, often more subdued emotions like boredom or irritation cause us to eat. Additionally, we often tie food to positive emotions associated with dating, celebrations, and family. During this podcast, I discuss my definition of emotional eating and present strategies to stop eating emotionally so you can live a naturally healthy life free from type 2 diabetes.
When it comes to living healthy, I promote the philosophy that your human body is perfectly normal. Diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension and many others, are usually the result of not feeding your body the foods the earth naturally creates. Humans are the only animal that do not eat what the earth makes naturally. Squirrels aren’t saying, “I’m tired of acorns, let’s go out for pizza.” During this podcast, I discuss my straightforward philosophy and how this pertains to reversing type 2 diabetes, losing weight and living a naturally healthy life.
When it comes to our relationships, we often have expectations of how other should behave. Sometimes these expectations are implied and not plainly expressed. If someone does not comply with our implied expectations, which in coaching we call “our manual”, we may experience negative feelings. During this podcast, I discuss why manual work is so important to managing our emotions and reversing type 2 diabetes.
One of the tools I teach for reversing diabetes is the thought model, which is the idea that thoughts drive feelings, actions and inevitably results. If you want different results, you need to work on finding a different thought. While conceptually this tool seems simple, applying and mastering this tool is much more difficult. During this podcast, I provide examples of how the thought model is applied and illustrate the many steps in the process. I discuss the challenges and iterations that are common on the road to living a naturally healthy life.
When it comes to losing weight, reversing diabetes, or just living a naturally healthy life, always sticking to our plan can be challenging. Often, we will hit a crossroads when we want to say, “screw it” and eat the bag of Oreos. We may even justify our actions by thinking we deserve it, or it is a reward for being so good. This is the moment, however, that will determine our future success or failure. During this podcast, I discuss why it is so important to double down on our commitment at this moment.
While the word “pleasure” often stirs images of sex, there are many non-sex-related ways to achieve pleasure. Pleasure is simply a feeling of happy, satisfaction or joy. Pleasure also has a biological component that includes the release of feel-good hormones. In fact, many highly processed foods have been engineered to produce an elevated release of these feel-good reward hormones. Consequently, most people turn to food as their primary way to achieve pleasure. These highly pleasurable foods are the same foods that make people sick with type 2 diabetes. If you are looking to reverse your type 2 diabetes and live a naturally healthy life as well as get out from under the health care system, you need to stop using food as your source of pleasure. During this podcast, I discuss ways to bring pleasure into your life that does not have negative health consequences.
The definition of authenticity or authentic is being of undisputed origin or genuine. In life, we often make decisions motivated by obligation or social pressures. Typically, these decisions are not in alignment with our authentic selves. During this podcast, I discuss how envisioning your authentic self and making decisions in alignment with this vision is an important part of living a naturally healthy life.
Hormones play a unique role in why and how we eat. Chemical messengers produced by glands, hormones help regulate hunger signals and energy storage. During this podcast, I discuss the influence of the three hormones Leptin, Ghrelin and Insulin, and their influence on our hunger, satiety, and fat storage.
Your primitive brain seeks to minimize pain, maximize pleasure, and avoid work. While this evolutionary trait benefited our species when food was scarce, today it causes us to make food choices that do not serve our bodies. In contrast, the prefrontal cortex is implicated in logical thought, rational decision making and planning. During this podcast I discuss why planning ahead, which uses the prefrontal cortex, rather than making decisions on the fly using the primitive brain is necessary to living a naturally healthy life. I also provide strategies and examples of how to plan meals ahead of time.
Every choice we make in life has pros and cons. Often, we have the belief that not deciding is a way to avoid these pros and cons. Doing nothing, however, is also a choice and will inevitably have consequences. For example, not making healthy lifestyle choices will result in your diabetes progressively getting worse. During this podcast, I discuss this concept that was so pivotal to my journey.
Thought errors are existing beliefs that don’t align with our desired future state or goals. These thoughts undermine our progress when they are not challenged. Many times, people accept these preexisting thoughts as foregone conclusions, which may impede progress before it even starts. In coaching, clients learn to critically evaluate thoughts, which drive actions and inevitably results. During this podcast, I discuss thought errors, how to recognize them, and how to find thoughts that align with a naturally healthy life.
Food cravings are a natural process driven by biology and patterned behaviors. When it comes to living a naturally healthy life, recognizing these cravings and learning productive strategies for coping is essential. When we give into these cravings, it just rewards us and creates more cravings in the future. During this podcast, I discuss why we have food cravings and I introduce strategies for coping with cravings.
When people come to me wanting to resolve their type 2 diabetes, it’s because they believe there is a better way that doesn’t include daily finger sticks, pills and injections. This desire to try something different typically stems from a mindset that is open to new possibilities. According to psychologists and social scientists, having the right mindset is essential to achieve your goals. Mindset is an established set of attitudes or beliefs. During this podcast, I discuss the different type of mindsets that often undermine our success and present alternative mindsets that are shown to produce results.
How would your life and health be different if you practiced self-love? We love our children and family members unconditionally. With our children, this love translates into an intentional approach to parenting that includes planning and monitoring what our children eat, watch on television and learn. Now, how would your life and diabetes be different if you practices this same type of intentional and unconditional love for yourself? During this podcast, I discuss the concept and how making an investment in your wellness is an act of self-love.
Fasting has several fabulous benefits including weight loss and improving insulin sensitivity. In addition these health benefits, many clients report fasting results in saving money and time as well as providing opportunities for mind management regarding food. During this podcast, I discuss the many benefits of fasting and provide real-world examples.
When it comes to nutritional ketosis, there is a lot of conflicting information available. Some of the most common questions clients ask are: (1) is ketosis safe over a long period of time and (2) do I need to stay in ketosis forever? During this podcast, I discuss what the literature says about nutritional ketosis and its effect on health. I address everything from the affects on kidney function and cholesterol to mood and, of course, reversing type 2 diabetes.
During this podcast, Dr. Delane Vaughn discusses how ketone bodies are produced and used by the body for fuel, as well as their health benefits and the reported associated euphoria. After reviewing ketone bodies and their benefits, Dr. Vaughn transitions into discussing emotions. Finally, she concludes by discussing how coaching provides the necessary tools and strategies to manage emotions, which often undermine our healthy intentions.
Food journaling is an important tool for achieving your health goals including resolving type 2 diabetes and weight loss. Why? Because it works. Food journal provides the necessary data to help you manage blood sugars, plan meals, evaluate your progress and make the necessary adjustments to achieve your desired results. During this podcast, I discuss why food journaling work and what should be included in your journaling practice.
Our brains are the most efficient machines on Earth. This efficiency is the result of the brain’s ability to form neuropathways that allow common tasks to be automatic.
