Divine Scripture teaches us that among those who deserve praise it is fitting to praise not only their manners, but also their parents; so it is in the manner of a transmitted inheritance that a spotless purity will distinguish those whom we want to celebrate. In fact, what is the sacred evangelist aiming for here? Does he not want to claim for St. John the Baptist the nobility of parents, prodigies, life, function, martyrdom? Thus is celebrated Anne, mother of Samuel the saint, that Isaac received from his parents the nobility of piety, then bequeathed it to his descendants.
So Zachariah is a priest, and not only a priest, but also of Abia's class, which distinguishes him from the oldest families. "And his wife, it is said, was of Aaron's lineage. So it is not only to his parents but to his ancestors that the nobility of St. John goes back, not enhanced by the power of this world, but venerable by a religious lineage. Such ancestors were needed by the herald of Christ: thus would he preach, not for having suddenly conceived it, but as having received from his ancestors, as infused by right of birth, faith in the coming of the Lord.
St. Chrysostom first recalls that the punishment of our first parents should make us attentive and vigilant to avoid sin, and then he explains why Adam gave his wife the name of Eve. - 2.-3. The garments of skins of which the Lord clothed them, testify his kindness, and warn us to avoid the luxury and sumptuousness of the garments. - The speaker takes the opportunity of a severe lesson to the rich, then he explains, as an ironical fulfillment of the promises of the devil, this saying: "Here Adam is like one of us. It was also by a merciful effect that God chased Adam out of the earthly paradise, before he had eaten the fruit of the tree of life; because immortality would have led him always to sin. He also compelled her to live with the earthly paradise, so that the sight of this place might remind her of her fault, and he subjected her to hard work so that he would not become too attached to the earth. life. 4. After a short exordium, the orator approaches the story of the fall of our first parents, and proves, by the fact alone of the interview of Eve with the serpent that all the animals were subjected to the man. 2. He then refutes the opinion of those who claimed that this serpent was endowed with reason, and establishes that it was only the organ and instrument of the devil. He then describes at length the colloquy of the latter with the woman, and bitterly reproaches the latter for his imprudent confidence. - 4. It is not less severe for Adam who preferred to be compliant with his wife rather than obeying God. 5. The first effect of sin having been to make Adam and Eve aware of their nakedness, St. Chrysostom explains in what sense Scripture says that their eyes were opened; he fights on this occasion those who maintained that before his disobedience Adam did not have the knowledge of good and evil, and explains why the Scripture names the fatal tree, the tree of the science of good and evil. 6. He shows the wisdom of God in the easy defense made to man, and ends with an eloquent parallel between the tree of earthly paradise and the tree of the cross.

He then remarks that work was imposed on man as a condom against idleness, but that this work was only a gentle occupation, and not a practice. The defense which the Lord made to Adam to eat of the fruit of the tree of the science of good and evil, was to exercise his obedience and to keep him in dependence and submission; and though the woman was not yet created, God understood her in this defense, that Adam might make her known to him afterwards. 4. Regarding the creation of the woman, the speaker observes that here, as in the creation of man, God speaks to his Son, and that he reveals the dignity of the woman by saying that She was formed to be the companion of man. 5. He then explains how Adam named the various animals by an act of authority, as a master names his servants, and. finishes by asking his listeners to remember his instructions.

He then briefly takes up the story of the formation of man; and refutes in passing the error of those who regarded the soul as a part of the divinity. - 3. Turning to the words of his text, he says that the word planted by Scripture, expresses that at the Lord's command there earth produced the various trees of the garden of delights; and he adds that Moses determines the place to confuse in advance the fables of some heretics. 4. The Lord placed the man there to enjoy all his beauties and all his pleasures, and forbade him to touch the fruit of the tree of life, to test his obedience, and to remind him of his dependence.
