Washington Post Sports Reporter Jacob Bogage joined David to discuss baseball card fraud.

Bogage writes: Baseball card collectors suspected rampant fraud in their hobby. Now the FBI is investigating.-- The green stadium seats shown on the baseball card are empty as Stan Musial, wearing a crisp white uniform, grips a bat and digs in. His eyes gaze toward the pitcher over his right shoulder, his white teeth peeking out from under a grin. It’s almost as though on this vividly colored card, issued in 1952 by the Bowman Gum Company, “Stan the Man” has spotted a fat fastball. The card’s lone obvious blemish is a stray black print mark on the white frame. Even with the defect, it sold in an online auction in late 2017 for $2,800.

Washington Post reporter Steven Goff joined David to discuss racism in soccer.

Goff is a Washington Post Reporter covering soccer (D.C. United, MLS, U.S. national teams, World Cup), plus some college basketball.

The beautiful game has an ugly problem: Racism-- The beautiful game has an ugly problem. Racism is a societal issue transcending soccer, but when incidents occur in the planet’s most popular sport, the scourge is magnified. Recent episodes turned the spotlight back on the matter and prompted Danny Rose, a left back for the English national team and Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, to say, “I’ve got five or six more years left in football, and I just can’t wait to see the back of it.”

MLB legendary Umpire Al Clark joins David tonight live to discuss Major League Baseball.  Joey Jackson, Attorney and CNN Contributor discusses Robert Kraft, Lonzo Ball, Kristaps Porzingis, and more.  Both David and Joey Jackson breakdown the legal questions relating to these matters for us to understand. A must listen.

Relating to Robert Kraft, Joey Jackson  says, "...looking at the good work he does, we have to look and see whether or not he committed this. Now defense attorneys – it’s our job to challenge evidence – that’s what we do, and in the event that evidence was gathered improperly or illegally then it gets thrown out. In this particular case I just don’t know that that is the case. The fact is that the police were conducting an investigation, based on my understanding, they were focusing on something that is really significant to all of us and that is human traffiking. Why – because it effects women, it effects children, and it effects just an evil that’s out there  in terms of abducting and otherwise getting people under false pretences and then having them, unfortuantely, in these human traffiking rings.

Relating to Lonzo Ball's lawsuit, Jackson says, “…I think that’s the story here, that his father hasn’t said much at all given the fact that his father is so vocal… “

A true Civil Rights activist, Rev. Jesse Jackson, joined us to share his perspective on the significance (irony) of the Super Bowl being played in Atlanta.  Atlanta is known as the  “cradle of the Civil Rights Movement.”  It also marked the start of Black History Month.  In recent years, the NFL has been strongly condemned for its role in social and racial injustices – who better to discuss these issues then Rev. Jesse Jackson!

A.J. Perez discussed Julian Edelman. Perez's colleague wrote, "The NFL has some warped priorities. Call attention to racism and discrimination, and your career is effectively over. Test positive for performance-enhancing drugs, and you can be the Super Bowl MVP." -- Nancy Armour, USA Today.   Is she right?

Carlotta Gall, Turkey Bureau Chief, New York Times, called in from Istanbul, Turkey to discuss the Turkish government and Enes Kanter.  A compelling discussion.  Here is a quote from the interview:

David asked Carlotta Gall about Fethullah Gülen, the leader of the group that Enes Kanter follows:  “This is where I think it’s a bit more problematic. Certainly Gülen has a lot to answer for, and his answers aren’t satisfying to most.”   She continues, “His group was aiming to take power – they have openly said that they wanted to infiltrate government, all institutions, and eventually take power. So, there is something not transparent and disconcerting from the way they’ve been operating from many years.”    Full interview tonight at 9 pm EST.

This week HWTP Sports Talk was joined by Washington Post writer Adam Kilgore and attorney Stuart Davidson to discuss the NHL concussion lawsuit worth nearly $19 million. This case is similar to multiple cases brought against the NFL, which resulted in larger sums awarded to injured parties. Adam Kilgore states that it may be, “the high profile of former players [in the NFL] who were showing symptoms at an older age or even doing things like committing suicide,” that may have caused the case against the NFL to have more media attention than the lawsuit brought against the NHL. Kilgore explains that in the cases similar to the concussion case against the NFL, the league, “tries to mitigate or eliminate any PR headaches, so they settled right away.” In the case against the NHL, “the commissioner decided that the league was going to meet the players head on.”

This week we were joined by Emily Giambalvo from The Washington Post who covers the University of Maryland athletics news. We were also joined by author and professor Andrew Billings who co-wrote Mascot Nation: The Controversy Over Native American Representations in Sports.

Emily Giambalvo joined us this week to discuss the reinstatement and subsequent firing of Coach DJ Durkin for the University of Maryland’s football team. Durkin was originally taken out of power due to allegations of inappropriate behavior including a toxic culture of intimidation and humiliation against players. Once Durkin was reinstated on Wednesday, there was a major outcry from the players and the community. Giambalvo states that players using their voices to protest against policies and those in power, “is not something that we usually see in college sports.”

“Warriors of Liberty City,” an Official 2018 SXSW Episodic Selection, is a docuseries from Executive Producers LeBron James and Maverick Carter, along with PGA® award-winning director and producer Evan Rosenfeld, that explores Liberty City – a crime-ridden neighborhood in Miami, Fla. that is arguably the NFL’s largest, most successful football factory. The series follows a season with the Liberty City Warriors, a youth football program founded by an unlikely mentor: hip-hop pioneer Luther Campbell, better known as “Uncle Luke.” Before Liberty City native Barry Jenkins won his historic Oscar® for Moonlight, the city was best known for producing some of the biggest names in football, including Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, Devonta Freeman, Antonio Brown, Duke Johnson, and Teddy Bridgewater. It's a place synonymous with poverty and gun violence, but in the face of incredible challenges and personal tragedy, the Liberty City Warriors learn to triumph both on and off the football field. Beyond football, Liberty City Warriors Optimist Club is a youth organization that sponsors sports teams, dance, cheerleading, tutoring and academic support. Life, like football, is a contact sport, and for the kids and families of Liberty City, being a Warrior holds the key to both.

‘what-if’ “One of the last things I did as editor was I went through the entire book and I searched for the phrase ‘butterfly effect'...I wanted to use it no more than three times, so I had to cross a couple out.”

On a chapter written by former NPR host Robert Siegel that imagines an alternate universe in which the Dodgers had never left Brooklyn…‘what-if’

"Just to hear Robert Seagull pretend that the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn...He spends 30 years building up his credibility and ruins it with this one story."

"The best ‘what-if’ happened after the book went to publisher, which is what if the US had qualified for this World Cup?"

Join us Wednesday, May 16 at 9pm ET: special guest Laura Okmin founder of GalVanize, and a Fox on NFL sideline reporter.

Over two decades, Laura Okmin has covered the biggest names on the biggest stages including over 10 Super Bowls, 2 Olympics, multiple NBA Finals, World Series and All-Star games. Laura joined the FOX Sports Network in 2002 as a host/anchor/reporter and has held numerous jobs in the FOX family ever since.  She is currently a sideline reporter for the NFL on FOX as well as a feature reporter for the NFL on FOX Pre Game Show.

Guests:

Michael J. Socolow has been awarded the 2018 Broadcast Historian Award for his book, Six Minutes in Berlin: Broadcast Spectacle and Rowing Gold at the Nazi Olympics. The award is given to an educator who has published or produced work specifically related to broadcast/media history by the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation (LABF) in partnership with the Broadcast Education Association (BEA). From the announcement:

"Socolow uses a single case study – the gold-medal winning rowing crew from the University of Washington, which upset the Germans in front of Adolf Hitler and 75,000 fans–to illustrate the development of sports broadcasting at the personal, national, and global levels. He interweaves the broadcast of that race, heard by millions in the United States, with the memories of the oarsmen and contemporaneous press accounts to revisit the dramatic and exciting origins of live global sportscasting."

Jerry Breyer, Washington Post Sports Columnist: In his latest column, The Washington Post’s Sports Columnist Jerry Brewer writes that the Washington Redskins have consistently made deplorable decisions leading up to the new report showing the team allegedly allowed deep-pocked male sponsors and FedEx Field suite holders access to see Redskins cheerleaders topless or wearing only body paint. Brewer goes on to write that the Redskins’ inability to get things right is due to owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen who “continue to lead one of the NFL’s most important franchises deeper into the sewer.”

David is join by former Chicago Bulls player and author Craig Hodges and Washington Post sports reporter Cindy Boren.  Colin Kaepernick -- is it his skills or protest is what's keeping him from being picked up by teams? Both Hodges and Boren engage in a passionate discussion about Kaepernick.

“There is an unfair price to be paid for social activism by athletes,” Cindy Boren told HWTP Sports Talk during a phone interview.

Craig Hodges added, "… give that man his opportunity to come to somebody’s training camp and throw the football – cut out all the garbage, cut out all the mechanism to effectively blackball him until the season starts and now he’s a memory...that’s how the game is played and that’s how it was done to me…”

ENCORE Iview w/ Craig Hodges -- still relevant today.

As a member of the 1992 world-champion Chicago Bulls, a dashiki-clad Hodges delivered a handwritten letter to President George H. W. Bush demanding that he do more to address racism and economic inequality. Hodges was also a vocal union activist, initiated a boycott against Nike, and spoke out forcefully against police brutality in the wake of the Rodney King beating.

But his outspokenness cost him dearly. In the prime of his career, after ten NBA seasons, Hodges was blackballed from the NBA for using his platform as a professional athlete to stand up for justice.

In this powerful, passionate, and captivating memoir, Hodges shares the stories—including encounters with Nelson Mandela, Coretta Scott King, Jim Brown, R. Kelly, Michael Jordan, and others—from his lifelong fight for equality for African Americans.

David talked with director Gaspar Gonzalez about his new documentary "A Long Way from Home: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Desegregation."

Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color line in 1947, but it took another generation of Black and Latino players to make the sport truly open to all. Playing in remote minor-league towns, these were the men who, before they could live their big-league dreams, first had to beat Jim Crow.  Featuring James “Mudcat” Grant, Orlando Cepeda, Tony Pérez, Jimmy Wynn, Grover “Deacon” Jones, J.R. Richard, Enos Cabell, Octavio “Cookie” Rojas, Orlando Peña, and Bobby Tolan.

Live in the studio will be Washington Post reporter Nick Eilerson -- we discuss his article "Verbal abuse from parents, coaches is causing a referee shortage in youth sports."

Football and Manliness | An Unauthorized Feminist Account of the NFL Tackling the problem of how the NFL measures men

Women, African Americans, and gays have recently upended US culture with demands for inclusion and respect, while economic changes have transformed work and daily life for millions of Americans. The national obsession with the National Football League provides a window on this dynamic period of change, reshaping ideas about manliness to respond to new urgencies on and beyond the gridiron.

Thomas P. Oates uses feminist theory to break down the dynamic cultural politics shaping, and shaped by, today's NFL. As he shows, the league's wildly popular product provides an arena for media producers to work out and recalibrate the anxieties, contradictions, and challenges that characterize contemporary masculinity. Oates draws from a range of pop culture narratives to map the complex set of theories about gender and race and to reveal a league and fan base in flux. Though longing for a past dominated by white masculinity, the mediated NFL also subtly aligns with a new economic reality that demands it cope with the shifting relations of gender, race, sexuality, and class. Indeed, pro football crafts new meanings of each by its canny mobilization of historic ideological processes.

Excerpts from Sheriff Hodgson's interview regarding Aaron Hernandez:

"...he really didn’t get along well with most of the players there – he’s not a guy that could go out to dinner with a Tom Brady or someone else."

"In his case there were no real indicators that he needed any special care and in spite of that because he was going from a 7000 square foot home to a 70 square foot cell, wearing a different uniform, with having being revered as a Patriot by not only fans here, but all around the country as a great star – he wasn’t getting revered too much inside of prison in his uniform – that was a big slide for him, a big transition so I told my staff for three weeks we are going to keep him in the medical unit so let’s watch and see how he transitions from where he was to where he is now."

No better way to close out Black History Month then to discuss the legacy of the late great Florence "Flo Jo" Griffith. Olympic Gold Medalist Al Joyner and his daughter Mary Ruth Joyner joined David live for both an educational and inspiring discussion.  Flo Jo was an Olympic gold medalist who brought style to track and field with form-fitting bodysuits, six-inch fingernails and amazing speed. She still holds the world records in the 100- and 200-meter events.  Flo Jo died from an epileptic seizure in 1998. Al Joyner won the 1984 Olympics for the triple jump, the first American in eight decades to win the event and the first African American.  Joyner was married to Flo Jo and together they had daughter Mary Ruth Joyner.

“Every year, every Olympic games and every track and field meet comes in, and when the world record comes up of the 100 meter or the 200 meter -- I look at it and say that’s the record that Florence set and Florence always said that she put a record out there, but she knows that someone will break it and the woman that breaks that record is the one that believes in herself.  Once they believe in themselves they will set a new standard and Flo Jo records will be history…for right now it’s a goal that everybody should try and reach and attain because all she did was believed that she can be the best...I just hope that every young person or anybody in their life in general go out to set records but then make records in bigger footprints as you go along because Florence would always say herself, “I believe in the impossible because no one else does -- it gives me an excellent chance to accomplish it.  She said make bigger footsteps that she can ever make.”  - Al Joyner

Great conversation between David Weinstein and director Charlie Ebersol.

This Was The XFL

A bold challenge, a fearless experiment and ultimately, a spectacular failure. In 2001, sports entertainment titans Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon launched the XFL. It was hardly the first time a league had tried to compete with the NFL, but the brash audacity of the bid, combined with the personalities and charisma of Ebersol and McMahon and the marketing behemoths of their respective companies -- NBC and WWE -- captured headlines and a sense of undeniable anticipation about what was to come.

Bloomer Girls; Women Baseball Pioneers; America, its women, and its game: Disapproving scolds. Sexist condescension. Odd theories about the effect of exercise on reproductive organs. Though baseball began as a gender-neutral sport, girls and women of the nineteenth century faced many obstacles on their way to the diamond. Yet all-female nines took the field everywhere.

Author and fixing expert, Brian Tuohy will breakdown the big financial hit that bettors took over the weekend.  Here's a tease...

Packers/Cowboys and Chiefs/Steelers games: "In officiating I think there is a difference between the correct call and the right call, and I think the correct call were made in both instances – I think Cook was inbound on the pass that Rogers threw him at the end of the Packers and Cowboys game. And I think the correct call was made on the hold by the Chief’s lineman against the Steelers on the two point conversion."

He continues..."But, the question I have to ask, is that necessarily the right call in the NFL minds, because I think a lot of things done on the field are done as business decisions – those two calls I think are correct and maybe they got them right. But, if you look at like the Packers success...they beat the Giants pretty easily and they had to endure a couple of comebacks by the Cowboys to win in that game… they haven’t had a holding call against their offensive linemen in either game. Now, is that correct or is that the right call and right decisions that the  officials are making? ...I find that suspect that a team can go two playoffs game without their offensive line getting a holding call against them. "
