Whether it's planned or unplanned, you're gonna want (or need!) a break from your design business. Let's get out ahead of this and make a plan to ensure you can take a break and feel REALLY good about it.
We believe taking time off isn't a 'nice to do' thing, it's a 'must do' thing—it is an essential part of your business health and success. And we're not talking about half-hearted holidays where you have one toe in your business and one toe in the ocean.
We would love to see you implement a business structure that allows you to completely down tools and switch off for several weeks at a time.
This non-negotiable time off is your chance to reset, fill up your cup with new creative energy, and if necessary, heal your mind and body.
Because without a priority on your wellbeing, you won't have a viable business for long.

It's the feedback none of us want to hear - the client isn't happy with our design. What do you do now? First of all, don't panic, all is not lost! It's always disappointing when you've put your heart and soul into a project, but if you manage your emotions, you may find the solution is much simpler than you think. Often a small tweak or even just better communication will turn that no into a yes! And believe it or not, sometimes the client is right! The most important thing is to not take it personally, keep your ego in check and work through the solutions until you find the right one for converting your unhappy client into a happy one.

One little red flag…you can work with that right?
Nope—if ignored, that little baby can explode into many! Before you know it you’ll have little red flags all over the place!
We’ve all been there, taking on a red-flag client and not listening to our intuition. Instead saying to ourselves “who am I to turn down work?”
But then, ultimately ending up resenting the work or the client, or worse—yourself.
Little red flags are a direct communicator to your gut! So listen up beautiful designers and if a little red flag pops up for you with a prospective client make sure you have some very clear boundaries in place to deal with them.
You are so worthy of doing the work you love with people who love, trust and respect you.

We’re all human, we all make mistakes, but if you have a strong framework of reliable go-to systems underpinning your design business, the mistakes can be minimised.
We love the idea of blaming the system, not the person. If there’s something happening on repeat to undermine your business, chances are there is a system that can prevent it from happening again.

This feeling of lack of control and of not being in charge can be demoralising and can affect your self-esteem as a business owner.
We ask, why are so many graphic designers people pleasers? Yes, it's a generalisation but it's a commonality we've noticed. Is it because great creativity comes with great sensitivity?
Whatever it may be—your people-pleasing habit might be making your business and life so much harder than it needs to be.

Freelancer. It's the dirty word that we feel is undermining many graphic designers and creatives in business.
Although the word freelancer may have good intentions (think: freedom and flexibility), it comes at a cost.
We believe many designers are playing small by using the word freelancer—it prevents creative entrepreneurs from fully showing up with a CEO mindset, which we believe is crucial for success in business.
When you have a CEO mindset, you are more likely to:
- Set firm boundaries
- Implement effective systems into your business
- Command respect because of the energy you bring to the business
Beautiful designer, you are worthy of having a real, proper, grown-up business. For us, freelance just feels one step too close to being ‘an outsourced employee’.

Production management can be quite the organisational beast for designers...liaising with printers, arranging print quotes for clients, dealing with payment, sending off projects to print (to name a few).
Here are our top tips for remaining in control of projects that require production:
- Avoid quoting on production until after the design concept has been resolved AND keep it separate from the main design cost.
- Communicate extensively with the printer
- Every printer is different, so even if you have sent similar projects to print before, ask your supplier for their preferred specifications and requirements
- Ensure that you are getting paid for your valuable production management time (it can be time-consuming!)
- Decide if you are going to get the supplier to invoice the client directly or invoice the client for production costs yourself (Pro Tip: if you receive wholesale prices from your supplier, you can add a percentage markup to the quote)
- Make sure you get full payment prior to production going ahead.
Having systems ready to go will collapse time for you and ensure you are asking all the right questions so that there are no crazy surprises that may cost you and your client time and money!

- Don shares where she successfully negotiated with a large client who had unrealistically long payment terms.
- We also share our key tips and scripts that have ensured we have been paid 99% of the time throughout our careers.

We can count on one hand (collectively) the clients who didn't pay up—these problems occurred early on in business when we were quite green and didn't have the systems we needed in place to protect us.

So our title gives us away…it’s no secret that we are against free pitching. In fact we want to shout it to the roof tops, because we think it’s a risky business and something you should avoid at all costs.
Yes we all have to quote, however we don’t have to give up our intellectual property for free. It’s important that we designers, as a collective, say no for the good of our industry. Free pitching undermines and devalues both our industry and ourselves as professionals.
